1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

[....Oyaji? The Old Man] (mature, older-looking head sculpts)

Oct 3, 2005

    1. I'd love an Auron from FF10. Heck, my cat is named after that guy. That's a doll I'd care everywhere. I even have a little paper craft Auron.

    2. Do they exist? One of my characters is an older gentleman... Are there any bjds out there that actually appear somewhat elderly? And if not, are there any heads like so? :?

    3. That depends on how old you mean. From what I know there are no really 'old' sculpts, but the effect can be given through the faceup, to a degree. Some sculpts are easier to pull it off with than others. I have one guy with a faceup that makes him look 50-ish, and another that looks 40-something, along with a 40-something female, even though I really want to have her redone. Not that I think 40s and 50s is really close to 'elderly', but I'm willing to bet with modding and a good faceup, it probably could be done.

For some examples, you can check out this thread and the link given in the final post of that thread, as well.

    4. I think unidoll dolls can lend many of their dolls to the older aesthetic. I think it would be easier to go with more relistic sculpts, say Unidoll, Elfdoll, Iplehouse, Dollshe for example, and give them an older face-up. Looking at the thread which Edtel suggestion showed this is definately possible and executed well, looks fantastic :D

    5. Sorry I don't have any useful information for you but I couldn't help but comment on how funny it would be to have a little old man with jowls hanging around my lovely young ladies  I kinda want.

    6. Here's another thread to peek through: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?27781-....Oyaji&highlight=oyaji

Sadly, if I didn't already know what the thread was about I never would have found it since it uses fandom terms instead of simple English, and I doubt anyone else looking for this subject matter will ever stumble over it anything but accidentally, either. A serious shame since it's a common interest but not everyone speaks fandomese. :( But it's there, for all the folks looking!

    7. There was a Souldoll limited doll a while back - "Tarot Card 9. The Hermit Lemkin". While the basic doll had a young man's head, there was an "old man" mask that was an optional extra part.

    8. You might want to consider a DIM minimee head. I know there has been one done of Allen Rickman and one of Hugh Laurie...I think there was a Yul Brynner one as well...in any case...a few lovely older actors have been made into minimees :) Once you have marketplace access, you might want to look for one there :)

    9. A lot will depend on the faceup, clothing and your own perception of what makes some one "older." I personally can count on one hand the number of dolls I would consider over 18 straight from the company, and even those I could not see passing as older than 25 TOPS. It's all up to the individual owner what constitutes "age." If you are looking for some specific feature that says "adult," you may wish to look into the MiniMe custom heads. If you are just checking around to see what's available, I'd suggest Tensiya/Dollshe, Unidoll, some of the Dollmore dolls and some of the Soom lines. In general, avoid most Volks, Luts and Fairyland dolls. They are generally more round/stylized and childlike, however a lot depends on what you are looking for and how you personally customize the doll to your character.

    10. Thanks for everyone's help! It's really difficult to portray age... and I'm not talking age 25-40... I'm talking 70's-80's. xD

I have really useful links now, and I'll be sure to check them out. Once again, I appreciate everything. :)

    11. It's a fantastic idea, and not just for heads, the idea of representing old age in the body is a great sculptural challenge :-) I hope you find a doll to portray your elderly character. It's my dream to have a Baba Yaga!! :-D

    12. Can a mod please change the title of this thread to include commonly searchable words like Older, Senior or Mature? I doubt many people are typing the word Oyaji into the search function, or even use that word.

    13. The body will always be a challenge. My older gentleman takes good care of himself, and i'd even prefer he be a bit more muscular, but if I were to try and represent him in doll form after his body starts to break down on him, that would be a real challenge. I'd love to see someone try it :)

    14. I would love to know people's opinions now that so many minimee heads have been made of the older actors and actresses lauded in the very beginning of this thread.

Personally, I've found some of them, particularly the much older representations to be *excessively* realistic, with every detail eerily frozen in time and space. They remind me more of death-masks than anything else. I guess I'd prefer a hint of aging in the sculpt that could be emphasized by shading and faceup, rather than an infinitely detailed topographic face-map.

    15. There's also the Leekeworld Lionel sculpt here.

      Yul Brynner:drool

I actually think some of the minimee heads of older actors looks really good. Someone had a Tilda Swinton head that I thought was awesome.

    16. So many thanks to the mods for adjusting the formerly useless name of this thread!

I'd recommend Unidoll also -- though they are only available second hand, now. Raurencio's boys don't look young to me either, but not as old as the Unidoll sculpts.

    17. As someone in her forties who has a neighbour almost fifty years older who in turn knows someone of 105, can I just point out that forties is nowhere near elderly....

And did someone mention Yul Brynner? :aheartbea

The thing I like about MNM heads is that they can be used for older characters. There aren't enough older dolls.

    18. Yay, thank you, Mods for fixing the Thread name and making this thread more useful!

    19. I think there is a market for older (I mean really older, not slightly more ambigious age-wise looking) dolls, but in this hobby, for them to sell as well as they could, I think they would have to be an elborate fullset with a strong 'character' design. I imagine a wizard styled one, or one with asain features styled as a kung-fu master or Samurai general would find fans. Souldoll sort of tried it, but they didn't push the character concept enough.
