[....Oyaji? The Old Man] (mature, older-looking head sculpts)

Oct 3, 2005

    1. yup, not so much time ago, my dream doll was a 50 years old man. I lost interest in that character, but having molds to be sculpted as more mature men or women would be interesting and give people more room for characters. Shota boys and pretty lolis can be tiring after you've seen tons of them.

    2. not really ive have never thought of that but i dont think i buy one... this is just my opinion

    3. Yes, older & craggier women would be really neat to see. People have no qualms about men with lines in their faces & gravity in their flesh, but steer clear of depicting female age in any kind of positive light-- not just steer clear, I would say, people RECOIL from the very concept of aging, as though they refuse to acknowledge it. Which is why people magically stop seeing women after a certain age. This is Botox World and the Land of Vaginal Tissue Rejuvenation, after all, where women aren't worth a rat's arse after age 26.

If a middle-aged female sculpt were made, I might actually consider owning one for the novelty of it. If I got really into it, then I might start making some of my boys' mothers or aunties or something, just for fun. My Tan Soo Ri does have an uncontrollable ill-behaved aging-wildwoman mother in his backstory - I think it'd be a hoot to bring her into being. ^^

But mostly, I'd just like to SEE them being made, just to know they exist, on general principle. What say, is there a Helen Mirren Minimee yet? :thumbup

    4. I would like a middle aged male, something along the lines of Naono Bohra's ojisans. Lines give a person character and well tummies are made for pinching anyway ;)

    5. I think it would be really interesting... because I know the people who sculpt bjds always strive to make them somewhat beautiful, so I would love to see an interpretation of a really beautiful older doll ^^ BUt I don't think I myself would want one...

      Great idea, though!

    6. 32 isnt classified as old is it? but then again it would look significantly older for a doll. (stubble, razor jaw, deep set eyes, prominent features etc)

    7. Hehehe...well if 32 is old, then I guess that makes me old :huh?: :P
There are various "older" art dolls I have seen over the years, both soft-sculpted and in polymer clay & all absolutely gorgeous and I'd love to own one but I'm not sure how that would translate into the ABJD aesthetic. I know I've seen resin casting tutorials for art doll heads and hands in the past by doll artists June Goodnow and Tom Banwell who have both done beautiful work with mature looking characters so it is technically possible to achieve gorgeous character lines in a cast but I think I like these dolls where they fit within the Art Doll classification. I don't think such older dolls would fit well within the ranges of most ABJD companies.

    8. I have a Unidoll Ark that is an 'older' man, at least compared to my other dolls (who all look like they are in their late teens/early 20s.) Peter is in his late 50s, though it's true that he has grown old graciously.

Personally, I can only see a limited market for dolls sculpted to look older. I think if done well, it could look amazing, but on the whole people like these dolls becuase they look ethereal and 'unreal' to some degree. Kind of like sprites or something, rather than 'real' people, with all the warts and wrinkles and imperfections that comes with being real. ;)
Now, that's not to say that I wouldn't love to see a doll that was, say, meant to be 60+, just that I can't see a company making one that was not limited or the like, becuase I do not think enough people would buy them to make them viable as a standard.

I think this is one of the reasons why I love the Minimee service, actually- it's so great to see some older and more unusual dolls on the forums. :)

    9. I want an older male doll....an OVERWEIGHT one. I want my cuddly grandpa-character to fuss and lecture my whippersnappers, darnit!

The tiny Deadpool on my planlist now adores you.

    10. well i would not really be interested in having an old doll :/
and i think the wrinkles would be hard to design.. which means they would be more expensive, right ._. ?

    11. I suppose you could get an older Minimee doll made, but for me that tends to take some fun out of the hunt. In the meantime, you could try using a younger doll head and painting it to look older. It'll look a little strange, but it's a trick that stage actors have been doing for years now. All you need to do is find out where the wrinkles go, how they work, and remember things like highlights and shadows. If you don't feel confident doing this, you could commission someone. I'm sure there are a lot of people on DoA who would be up to the challenge of making a sexagenarian face-up.

As far as portraying a body to match the face... that would require some mods. I would suggest slight mods to the body itself, while adding padding to the clothing to imply weight gain and/or the curvature of the spine. Again, wrinkles, liver spots, and varicose veins could be handled with paint or other materials. It's all about the illusion. No, it probably won't hold up to close inspection, but it would probably hold up to most photoshoots and the usual pictures taken.

And given that train of thought, it makes me want to go ahead with making a certain ancient character of mine into a doll. :D He plays pivotal roles in several stories, and is as entertaining and engaging as any character I've come up with.

    12. I think an older doll {60+} would be hard to find a body for..I am tempted by a Robert Downey Jr. minimee..he's in his middle 40's and it would be fun to have a doll with the age lines, but then limits the characters too..

    13. it really depends what you want to do with your dolls. for me, i dont think it would work having an old one :sweat

    14. I wouldn't want one (I only like pretty youthful things) but you could do it through the DIM minimee. I saw someone who had Hugh Laurie and his face is older.

    15. THIS WAS MY EXACT THOUGHT :fangirl:

Oh man, Granny Weatherwax would be the best doll in the history of the universe.

    16. I would love to have a Grandmother doll! Of course I would then have to have Grandpa to go with her ;)

    17. I'd love an older male, about 60, with a widow's peak with wild long grey hair. I'd turn him into some sort of crazy scientist or philosopher. He'd wear daggy tweed outfits too big for his thin frame. Some sort of Einstein character.

    18. This is the best ideaaaaaa, one of my favorite characters is in his 50's (and he lives in a medieval universe, so 54 is pretty freakin' old!).

Of course even with an old sculpt I'd probably still have to mod him, because he has a huge beaky nose =(

    19. An older doll could also be a nurse to the little tiny dolls. Or to an other doll, like an old family retainer. Expecially one that is a princess, or prince sort, or wealthy. It would be nice to see older faces. I'm surprised the Japanese companies or any of the Asian companies don't do them. They have a great respect for age and their wisdom.

      Geist~ Whaddaya mean 54 is freakin' old?! I'm 57 litter whipper-snapper! *lol*

    20. That would be awesome.
