Paying more for your Doll's clothing than your own....

Mar 31, 2007

    1. I still fit in my clothes from elementary school (and like them) so I don't need to buy myself clothes (the last time I did so I used a gift card and only bought a skirt, that was almost 3 years ago), and the clothes that I like are super expensive and not available where I live
of course I spend more on my doll's clothes, they're higher quality and take a lot more skill to make than mine

    2. I almost never buy new clothes. Other people occasionally give me clothes that they've grown out of or that they bought and didn't fit into, but it all generally comes from the thrift store or is kind of old and junky. By that reasoning, I -should- buy new clothes, but I never do.

My friend and I were discussing this, actually. We'd buy thrift store clothes for ourselves (I found a place with $2 shirts once!) but we'd actually consider and save up for much more expensive things for our dolls.

(I did just totally order myself a "FRANK BURNS EATS WORMS" shirt though. xD)

    3. The price of doll clothes did shock me at first, but once I bought some of the better made pieces, I really started to appreciate the detail, craftsmanship, and style. Appreciating my dolls' clothes has actually increased the amount I'm willing to spend on clothes for myself. Whereas, pre-doll ownership, I would never buy a piece of clothing over $60, now I occasionally splurge on a well made and versatile piece for myself, though still not as often as I splurge on clothes for my dolls. You could say that in styling my dolls, my own style has evolved, too.

    4. I won't bat an eye at paying more for doll cllothing and shoes for my dolls, I'm so bad that I won't spend very much on my own clothing because I need the money to buy my dolls things. they dress way nicer then I do, but I'm getting better about dressing nicer myself since I lost 100 pounds

    5. Human clothing is mass-produced, made by the hundreds or more usually, thousands, in factories, usually in places where costs are super-low (wages, rent, buying the machines, buying the materials). The more you can make and sell, the lower the price you can sell your item at, and the bigger profit you can make.

Doll clothes are made in small batches or are ooak. This alone ups the costs dramatically.

So, no, it is not a big surprise. The surprise is when the price of doll clothes is LESS than for a human. That is just too darn WEIRD! Someone is definitely losing money when they sell at such a low cost!!!

    6. Everyone I tell finds that crazy as well. Ill definitely be making my own clothing for my dolls, and using cheap alternatives. In my opinion I think that doll clothes cost so much even though they are made of such a tiny bit of fabric, is because their so small that their harder to make and usually have more detail than real clothes.

    7. Guilty! I've got two kids to dress as well so tend to pick up items for myself on the fly while shopping at Target, Costco, etc. I usually dress super casual and am chasing around a 2 yo so really no need to splurge on my own wardrobe, unless there is a special occasion of course but even then I try to be frugal and get a designer lablel second hand off of the 'bay.

I *don't* change my dolly's outfits frequently. If I find a gorgeous/well made item sometimes I can justify getting it as I know I will make good use of it =) In the end though, would rather put the funds for another doll.

    8. I don't spend money on doll clothes. Though, it's mostly because it is so tricky to find the right sizes and styles. I typically just buy fabric to sew clothes for my dolls, since it's easier for me to do that.

I raid thrift stores and ebay for fabrics, for the dolls or for myself. OuO Though, I would LOVE to splurge once to get a fancy outfit for my Nicky.

    9. Before I into BJDs world, I love fashion and will get a few trendy items every seasons. But now I stop buying clothes and shoes and bags or any other accessories for a pretty long time. I almost can't remember when is the last time I shop for myself. Now I definitely paying more on doll clothing then on me. It doesn't mean that I buy a lot of clothes. The fact is after I spent the money on the doll then I don't have much money left on their clothing. I would love to try sewing for my dolls but I just don't have the time and energy after 6 days long-hours job. I hope I can do it one day though!:)

    10. To be honest, it's not too difficult to hand sew for something smaller, if anything, it's even easier.
The actual problem is that doll clothing is not mass produced, and are actually hand-made for the most part.
Furthermore, doll clothing tends to be more elaborate than our regular clothing. It's almost a piece of art within itself.
However, I do protest against those 40 dollar jeans: my jeans were only $5 from walmart, lol. :shudder

    11. I definately spend more on individual items of doll clothing than my own, (ie I'll pay more for a doll shirt than a human shirt)...but this is almost entirely because I buy all of my clothes, with few exceptions, at vintage stores and thrift shops. Aside from the price, I like the character of old/worn clothing, mixing and matching styles and clothing 'eras' etc. If there was a 'BJD Goodwill' I would inevitably get all of my doll clothing there lol

    12. I most definitly stopped shopping for my own clothes after I got my BJD. It's simply more interesting. I'm a women so I've been buying women clothing for all my life but now I have shop for young boys it feels fresh to shop from new perspective. Plus, I get to buy interesting, creative costumes whereas my clothing should not stand out too much (unless it's halloween which is like once in 365 days). I think it's natural to be drawn to BJD's clothing than human's.

    13. It doesn't shock me because I collect in a range of scales - 1/3 scale stuff seems a bargain in comparison to some of the other dolls' outfits!

I don't spend more on doll clothes than on my own though... I love fashion and dressing up, and my dolls are mostly just an extension of that.

    14. i spend more money for my dolls' clothing. actually my last clothing purchase for myself was a half year ago lol XD and the clothes were way more cheaper compare to my dolls' clothes

    15. I don't spend much money on either. I have enough clothes for myself for a long time as I've stopped growing some time ago, and since I'm very much into crafty things my grandmother gave me a bunch of fabric scraps to make doll clothes out of, which I find more fun than buying. Now I'm working on my skills to make some proper clothes, but I'm thinking of buying my girl at least one nice looking outfit she can wear because there'll be a while before I can make her absolutely great clothes, and I want her to not look shabby.
I did buy her a nice pair of shoes though, as well as a bunch of shoes for my off topic but very loved dolls. I'd say all in all the six pairs of shoes cost about as much as one pair of human sized no-name sneakers cost in here, so even if I tried I'd probably spend more money on just renewing my walking shoes than on doll clothes.

    16. I bought a T shirt and a sweater for teddy bear from some cheap low end retail store. They both fit well on my doll (mini size) and they only cost me 2$ each. And they are not poor quality compare to other t shorts i bought for my doll. I mean T shirts are just T shirts... Yes there is more skills needed to make it small, but believe me the major reason why the BJD T shirts are selling for at least 15-30$ is that its a luxury market. A mini doll cost at least 250-400$, so the company knows we are goong to take our money out for our dolls and they put a higher mergin on everythings thats related to BJD

    17. Ehh...I've only bought a couple things for my new doll, and for the most part, they are cheaper than the clothes I buy for myself. Then again, I'm not buying anything really fancy or detailed, and my clothes aren't that expensive, considering where I buy them. It's not shocking though, because even in the Barbie hobby, clothes can get expensive, and the quality is barely half of what BJD clothing is comprised of. Plus, unlike Barbie and people clothes, most bjd apparel aren't mass produced and I think alot of them are made to order, so, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense why they're more expensive, especially for SD sized dolls. I think shoes are the only thing with crazy prices....like $90 boots??!?! What?!

    18. I'm trying to rebuild my own wardrobe thanks to some significant weight loss, so although I'm hoping to be able to get my first doll within the next couple months, clothes for me come before clothes for her. Luckily I have a lot of craft supplies and the skills needed to make my future doll some nice clothing for almost free.

    19. Oh yes, I do spend more per item- probably. They also don't stain, tear, sweat aka ruin their clothes either so that's a perk. ^^

    20. I typically make clothes for my dolls, but I've been wanting to buy my newest doll outfits and they are quite expensive. But I shop at thrift shops for my own clothes so that might be why they seem so expensive to me
