Paypal fees discussion

Jul 23, 2007

    1. Actually sometimes you will see a cash and credit price at gas stations and that is perfectly acceptable to most people.

    2. To me, this is unacceptable. I wouldn't purchase something from someone who required ME to pay the fee. If you're selling something, then you're doing business. To do or run a business, there are certain things that you have to have, I.E. methods of payment.

While I don't necessarily have bad feelings towards those that DO charge these fees, I wouldn't be involved in a transaction with them.

Now, that said, I can see both sides of the argument and how both sides do make sense.

    3. As a frequent seller, I only charge PP fees for one thing(I also use the nifty PP calculator that does the exact calculation for you): Group Orders, but I do give the participant the option of paying the amount with fees and have buyer protection, or sending as personal payment without fees, but no buyer protection (and I state these in my GO thread). As for other items such as clothing, commissions, dolls, etc., I don't require the buyer to pay an additional fee, I just add on $1 for shipping supplies which pays for the box/envelope I ship in, plus the small amount of change covers part of the fees.

    4. changed mind on comment

    5. No - this was changed years ago - all transactions that are not personal (gift) payments attract fees.

    6. This is not true any more. Paypal used to not charge fees if you paid to a personal account or if it was balance funded.

That is no longer the case.

Please remember that this company (Paypal) is owned by eBay. Since when did eBay give anything for nothing.

All transactions which are not gift payments attract fees, regardless of how they are funded.

    7. :S This indeed has posed quite an issue. Personally, I think paypal charges too much. I don't even feel protected by them when I use their service. Other than having my information undisclosed. But if there were to be any scams or such, I know my money won't be refunded. Having said that, I still use their mode of payment only because it's convenient. I used to ask pple to pay for paypal fees, but thought it will be much easier calculating the fees into the thing I am selling in the first place. It's better this way, than make things more complicated~

    8. I find it a bit annoying, but I have paid them before.

Personally, I just try to figure in how much of a cut Paypal will want before selling. Over-charging is ridiculous. I know that if I went to the store and found an item I wouldn't want to be overcharged for it.

    9. Paypal needs to make their policies clearer. :\

    10. Sorry to bring up an old thread, but if you put the price of the actual doll up then it's exactly the same as charging fees only in a discreet/sneaky way where the buyer thinks it is only for the price of the doll, so at the end of the day they still end up paying the fees (and not knowing about it.. which i feel is worse)... And i don't understand why that is acceptable if charging fees is not since that is essentially what it is for/used to cover.

I only ask for people to pay fees when you are paying and it gives you the option to tick if you want to pay the fees or if you want the other person to pay them (and it also tells you how much the fee is). I don't mind paying the fees on smaller payments but if i'm selling a full doll then i think it's necessary to at least split the fees between the two people as they can get pretty ridiculous especially if you're doing a layaway.

I also pay fees for purchases i make if the person asks me to. I don't really find anything wrong with it, as long as the buyer specifies that they want the fees paid so the seller isn't hit with a fee slapped in their face unexpected.

    11. I don't think there's anything wrong with charging paypal fees; using paypal is as much a convenience to the buyer as it is to the seller (without paypal you'd have to go through the hassle of sending a bank transfer or a money order). Very few people in the market place are running a business, most are operating in a garage sale type situation, so please don't be all "huffff you're totally running a business so it's your responsibility to pay for what is convenient to both of us".

That being said, I don't charge paypal fees, simply because it's against paypal TOS and I'd rather not getting in trouble with them - and I believe this is the only incentive any seller should have as far as not charging paypal fees goes. I've had a few buyers offer to pay paypal fees, which was very nice of them, and I often offer to do the same when I'm buying something from an individual seller.

The only thing that sort of peeves me is when the seller leaves absolutely no notice about the fact that they charge paypal fees. So then I contact them for a shipping quote - and they give me the number, I agree to the sale, and THEN they're like oh yeah please send this plus paypal fees to x account - here's a fee calculator go figure out the fee and the whole total yourself plz k thx bai. :) Um, no. I don't mind paying fees, but a) tell me in advance and b) the total's on you buddy. You may be a garage sale mom, but it's certainly still more in your best interest than mine to make sure the numbers are right.

    12. I honestly would rather, as a buyer, have a person charge me upfront what the shipping and paypal fees cost by putting them into the price. Sure, it's paying for convenience, but when shipping is included and I get to just pay them everything upfront I'm much more inclined to buy the item from them. As a seller, I would rather charge someone including the fees and shipping so they know exactly how much it's going to cost them from the get-go. The buyer shouldn't have to calculate all that.

    13. I think that if charges are to be paid I don't wanna know it... I just want it included in my price. plus shipping all laid out for me. I think partly because I am visually impaired...I like things in big bold print spelling it out clearly for me. It makes it easier I think on both of parties. Because we don't spend so much time going back and forth for clarity sake.

    14. The fee is more than %2 I know it not exact but I think is it over %3 !

If I sell something I include the Pay Pal fee in the for sale price.

    15. (Not picking on you, Arashi. You're just echoing what others have said.)

Guys, Paypal fees can change. For example, did you know the fees can be higher if you're selling an item to a person in another country? So if I sell a doll to somebody in the US it's 2.9%, but if I sell it to somebody in Europe it goes up to almost 4%. I could just charge everybody a flat 4%, but then I'm overcharging a good chunk of people. Which I'm sure, as a buyer, they hate.

Think of it like shipping. Within your country it might be pretty cheap. But if you have to ship something to the other side of the planet it can get expensive, right? Same thing with Paypal.

    16. For me, the issue is simple. Every Paypal user has signed a TOS agreement agreeing that they will not charge fees on top of their sales price to buyers using Paypal. Anyone who does list a charge for Paypal fees is violating those Terms of Service. Whether or not anyone thinks it should be that way, you (general "you") have agreed to abide by those rules.

The essence behind Paypal having this policy in effect was listed way back in this thread. They are a business too, and they don't want people saying "$10 for this item if you pay by money order, but it'll be $10.40 if you use Paypal". That makes people more likely to avoid using Paypal, and they don't want that.

So, "hiding" those incremental costs by just raising the original sales price for all buyers (regardless of payment method) is completely in keeping with Paypal's TOS. It charges all buyers equally, thus eliminating one incentive to use a different pay source. It's also standard business practice to factor overhead cost into the retail price of goods, be it on a large scale or a small one. Yes, some buyers will be overcharged... but guess what? That's happening to a lot of buyers every single day in all sorts of consumer environments. Retail merchants like Target or Wal-mart (and just about every other retail store out there) factor credit card fees (charged to merchants by CC companies) into all of their prices... if you buy something with cash, you're getting overcharged by a small amount. It's just how general retail business works.

I stated this about a year ago in this thread, and I still believe the same. If you (once again, general "you", not singling out any particular poster here) sign an agreement stating that you will not do something, then don't do it.

    17. It's just so much easier to look at a price and know that's all they want you to pay. The way I look at it, it's like when I stay in Canada vs England. In England, they include VAT in the price so you, the buyer, don't have to calculate it. When I stay in Canada, I have to make sure I have more money than the original price because the poor seller has to bung HST on the end at checkout.

I just hate the idea of looking at something, knowing I have enough money for it.... But not enough for the item plus tax/ppfees/what you want to call it.
Arashi222's got it right, it's best for both parties if it's included in the price, because it means not wasting time checking over numbers. Just pay the price, pay for shipping and done.

    18. I can understand both sides...on one hand I wouldnt want to pay those fees either, but then again if I was getting money, I wouldnt want to loose out on getting the full money worth of what I am selling either... especially if I needed the money badly
So I can see things from both sides

    19. I am pleased to see that many people are also bothered by being charged additional paypal fees on top of the purchase price. As stated, it is illegal which many people do not seem to recognize. Imo, if this is a serious problem, it should be pre-calculated it. Think of it as a shipping cost sort of thing. I like that this thread is still active as I'd like more sellers to recognize (there is still many who do charge additional pp fees) that a lot of people are VERY turned off by this practice.

I am, however, more bothered to being told to I need to send payments as Gifts which is a ban-able offense. I would rather cover the fees then risk loosing my account. I don't like them either, but it'd rather not break the tos.

    20. No. Those rules are part of Paypal's Terms of Service (ToS). They are not illegal. All that means is if you don't want to play by Paypal's rules you can use another service. You're not going to get arrested for charging somebody fees.
