1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Paypal fees discussion

Jul 23, 2007

    1. ^THIS! I totally agree!!! I will not buy from a seller that charges paypal fees (unless it's a group order) but I recently entered into a sale where the seller didn't list that they want paypal fees but asked me to cover it or send payment as personal payment after I told them I would buy it in a PM... I felt like a jerk and didn't want to flake out after telling them I would like it so I just sent the payment...

    2. I know this is a Paypal discussion but has anyone found a seller that won't take paypal on DOA?

    3. I've seen a few over the years, Chrystika, but not many... I've also, as a seller, been approached by a few buyers who don't use it.

    4. I've seen a few sellers (rarely) and one asked concealed cash, which is too tricky for me to even consider. I've had a buyer asking me if I as a seller would accept bank wire transfer and I accepted. My bank does not charge anything for receiving money from a bank account within the EU, which is good for me, but I was surprised the buyer was okay with sending money without any kind of buyer protection that PayPal offers.

    5. I've paid when sellers have asked for an additional 'Paypal fee', but I don't like it. I'm definitely not a fan of the Personal payment either, although again, I've done it (and been lucky thus far). To me, it only makes sense that any fees should already be factored into the selling cost. Then the buyer can either deem the cost of the item acceptable or not, as they see fit.

    6. I won't pay by personal payment unless I know the person I'm sending money to. It's too risky otherwise. I'm not expecting people to steal money from me and not send their part of the transaction, but I'd be an idiot not to use paypal protection properly.

If you want to use paypal responsibly, you have to accept that paypal charges fees. If sellers don't want to lose money though the fees, sellers should add the 4% (or whatever it is) directly to the asking price - like sales tax.

    7. People who are business savvy should know to include the 'Paypal' fee as part of the costs of the items and should include it into the price. Just good business practice.
It makes it simpler for the customer to understand and also won't offend them.
By telling the customer to pay for the fees on top, you could run the risk of offending them and questioning your business practices.

The only instance I would accept or send a 'gifted' payment is if I feel the person is trustworthy/will follow through on the promised transaction.

    8. thats cuz charging paypal fees is against their policy and people can get in trouble for charging them :D

    9. I am on the fence about paypal fees... I understand why sellers ask for it, I usually work it into my prices when I'm selling something so I never ask for my buyers to cover it.

But I do pay the fees only if it's for a limited doll part. Like hard to find heads-molds. and only if it's a limited that I really really want.

Other non limited doll parts, I report the seller's email to paypal and let them know that they where asking me to pay extra "Fees" at least if they don't do anything right away, the seller's on their watch list.

I do this with doll companies too. Seller's don't discriminate who pays their fees so why should I?

    10. Instead of saying you are charging a paypal fee - include it in the price and offer a 10% discount to people who pay you by another method?

That's an alternative way of looking at it I suppose!

    11. I could be wrong but I think the paypal fees happen 'cause the IRS now has their mits in the paypal payment ways. But you could avoid it all together by sending money as a GIFT! :P

    12. But if the buyer isn't somebody you know, and trust not to run off with your money, you have no protection if they decide to flake on you. I never use Gift/Personal Payment unless it actually is a personal friend I actually do trust.

For everyone else in the world, no way. Just suck it up and pay. I pay a fee for the privilege/convenience of using my card at the grocers' or the drugstore, and I pay a fee for using PayPal in the way that I prefer. Life is full of little surcharges, and PayPal fees fall under "shipping and handling".

    13. Plus that is another thing where if paypal found out you where doing you can lose your account too. Other people have already covered the horrible risks you take.

    14. Which is wrong, because now if you send money as a gift, Paypal asks you if you want to pay extra for the fees or have it taken out of the money you're sending.

No one can escape the dreaded PPFees ("Mwahahahaa!" says Paypal :O ), but why do the seller a favour when you're the one a) losing the protection of Paypal and b) spending extra on PPFees when it's not your responsibility to calculate or add on?

    15. I think that the cases for PayPal fees differ with each case, it should be decided differently with each transaction :)

    16. Not when it is against the terms and service for most people discussing this, which can case you to lose your account. And not when if you are in the UK it is illegal for you to deal with people who charge Paypal fees as a surcharge.

    17. Hmm. I probably would not ask a buyer to cover paypal fees on top of a sale. That doesn't feel right, although I can understand why others might want to do it.

However, I certainly would ask a buyer to use personal payment "payment owed" to avoid the fees altogether for both parties. If buyer and seller are in the same country and the sale is done with an "instant transfer" from a bank account, there will be zero PayPal fee on the transfer for anyone. This way, the payment is not registered as a gift, but rather a reimbursement for something the other party did for you (in this case, send you a doll). As far as I can read in their terms of service, you still have dispute rights for any PayPal transaction should you need it - including personal payments.

I have purchased all my secondhand doll stuff this way as the buyer, and it's been fine. I am more than happy to establish a good relationship with a seller and hope to be a repeat customer - and doing things the best way for everybody involved is a good way to do that. I like it.

Heck, if a buyer balked at sending me a "payment owed" when I was a seller, then that's an insult to my integrity I'd be more than happy to skip selling to them. I'd save the item and sell to someone else who is more accommodating / courteous -- and consequently more likely to give my dolls a good home in my eyes.

    18. Whilst that's an interesting loophole; are you seriously saying that if the buyer wants to send payment correctly, you'd refuse to sell simply because the buyer won't go against the TOS of Paypal?

    19. But your buyer has no protection at all if the package goes missing or arrives damaged. As a buyer I have no idea if you will insure it or not, package it correctly or not etc and I personally won't sent payment as a gift for anything expensive such as a doll. I have no problem with clothes, wigs etc or other low cost items. But for more expensive items, to protect me as a seller I always fully insure and as a buyer I send it via paypal (not gifted). If you haven't ever had a problem transaction then you're lucky but you might find if a doll doesn't arrive and you are facing being $$$ out of pocket you might change your mind. It's not an insult to your integrity, it's protecting my money from scammers. I was a mod on another forum and was involved with a member who I had bought and sold from on many occasions, who sold a doll to another member, and then never sent it. Turned out her house was being repossessed and she didn't want to sell her doll but needed the money. I had to negotiate with her to try and persuade her to send the doll as it was paid for by personal payment. I would have trusted this seller 100% and it taught me a lesson that people are not always trustworthy and honest.

    20. I totally agree with this :D
