Paypal fees discussion

Jul 23, 2007

    1. Thanks karla-chan. Yeah, I ended up just calling Paypal this morning. The woman I spoke to said it is always up to the seller to pass along the fees or not. She said they are not "supposed to", but there is nothing Paypal can do about it. So, I have no idea. :/

    2. I see, that does kind of suck actually.

    3. I would find another dealer. Paypal fees should be considered into the cost of their items. Definitely not added on top of the advertised pricing.

    4. I agree totally, but as far as I know, this is the only place I can get this particular doll, which has been discontinued. I've been looking for about 6 months now. :/ I'm just going to have to deal with it. Though I am going to let them know that although I agreed to it, I don't think it's a great practice.

They also told me that paypal fees are 4.9%. I'm almost positive they are 2.9% right now. Still looking into that.

    5. Yikes i thought the highest they where was 4% but i know it can depend on account. If they are charging more then the Paypal fee's on top, it is even more immoral.

    6. I don't see anywhere on Paypal's site that says anything about that, though there might be something I don't know. It says "sellers pay a 2.9% transaction fee on the total sale amount plus a $0.30 fee per transaction."

So, I went ahead and told Doll Peddlar that. We'll see what they say. :/

    7. It is good to bring this up.

    8. I think your own personal evaluation is what makes it acceptable or not. I don't mind paying the fees for the items and simply view it as part of the price. Usually I want the item, doll, etc enough that the fees don't really even phase me.

    9. @orphansparrow; I would definitely be a tad concerned about that; since Paypal definitely says that sellers shouldn't charge fees (regardless of whether or not Paypal says they can enforce it).

      >_> But then, if you do really want that doll from them, maybe you can tell them that you'd be willing to pay the actual 2.9% fee, rather than their higher rate (which is even more wrong, in my opinion, since you would be paying more than the actual fees anyway). Or ask them where they are getting their calculations from so you can see...

But I definitely think they shouldn't be charging you the fees. x___x Everywhere else I've ever bought anything never charged fees (other than TATA's, but that's another story).

    10. For me, I just flat out do not buy from anyone that charges fees or wants the money sent Personal Payment. I don't care how much I want what they're selling because for me it's just wrong. I have wondered about what the people that charge fees do when they buy something from a person that does not charge them fees, do they offer to pay them, since they are now being the buyer? yeah right..

I always look over a sale post to find out if they are going to want to charge me fees, but recently I have been experiencing the problem of contacting a seller wanting to buy from them and having them tell me to either send it Personal or pay fees, even thought they didn't mention anything about that in their selling post. When that happens I just tell them thanks but no thanks, I'm always polite about it though, because anger is not going to get them to change their belief system.

My problem with it is that I choose to be honest and pay the fees when I sell, and so I just have an enormous problem with then being asked to pay yours.

I did contact PayPal to ask them about the legalities and they said that it was FRAUD to ask for personal payment or ask the seller to pay the fee's. I know of some one on another forum who payed the fees when asked to, but she then contacted PayPal and reported the person and was given the fees back.

    11. Me,too... i don't see anywhere... i never refuse to paid PP... if it is not 5% (some people higher the price of PP) but the 4% ! I always paid PP here, and it is normal !

    12. With paypal fee's i can't pay them to the person i am buying off. In the UK surcharges are illegal. It was mainly to stop companies charging extra for when people paying with cards on this like holidays. So the government stepped in and from this year surcharges are illegal in the UK. Someone adding Paypal Fee's on top of the price after quoting a price, we can't deal with them in the UK. If they add that to the price we see before hand i.e. if it is already included in the cost of the item, then it is fine.

    13. I find it - well: tacky. Include the fee in the price (if you must) and be done with it.:| 'Back in day' of money-order, envelopes and stamps the buyer was often out 2-3 dollars and the seller had to wait and hope all went well - getting that money instantly through Pay-Pal is worth a few dollars. Seriously. Both sides are ahead - in my mind, anyway. And this is SO much easier than checks.

Though I understand in group orders~ That is understandable.

I haven't bought too many items on DOA - but I do shy away from PP-fee requiring sellers/listings.

    14. the paypal fees when up didn't they?

    15. Well when I bought my doll head, all I had to pay was a currency conversion fee. Is that the same thing? I assume it is, so I'm gonna keep talking.

When I bought my head I paid in I think two payments. The seller paid the fee the first time, but asked if I could do so the second time around. It was only, like 2 bucks or so, so I don't see it as a big deal...

    16. For the past few years, I've been in the process of liquidating my old fashion doll collection. As I accumulated quite a number of these dolls, it's taking a while to sell them all off. So, for now, I sell more than I buy. I never charge PayPal fees to my buyers (fashion doll or otherwise).

Yes, PayPal and even more so, Ebay, fees take a chunk out of the item price. However, let's be realistic, if it weren't for PayPal, chances are, I wouldn't even be able to sell most of my fashion dolls. Taking credit cards and providing the buyer with protection for their purchases opens me up to many more sales. I'll gladly pay the fee, if it means moving the items out of my house. Also, it is against PayPal TOS for me to charge buyers PayPal fees. As I see it, it's is a black and white issue - it's against the TOS, so sellers should not charge PayPal fees on top of the asking price. Simple as that.

As a buyer, I severely dislike having to pay PayPal fees. In fact, I avoid buying from people who charge them, especially if the seller is leaving it up to me to figure out what the fees should be. I'm sorry, but if you can't calculate the fees yourself and work it into your asking price, then I don't want to bother with buying from you. I suspect that the reason why sellers do this (not calculating the fees themselves) is to give an illusion of a lower price. It's a nice little marketing trick that is used in retail all the time. For example, ever wonder why you almost always see a price written as $99.99 and not $100 at department stores? Surely that extra penny is not going to make a lick of difference to either the seller or the buyer, but the $99.99 tag is psychologically more appealing to buyers than $100 - "Oh, what a nice shirt and it's less than $100!". Right. Or, those infomercials you see during odd hours on TV, selling a widget for 'only' $19.99, but then in small print you see '$25 shipping and handling fee applies', when you know it doesn't cost nearly as much to ship the thing. Yes, a savvy buyer is going to factor in all the fees (shipping or otherwise), but the initial asking price is what sticks out and draws the person in to look at your product closer.

When selling on Ebay or on the Marketplace here on DoA, you are free to ask any price you want. There is no price policing. Figure out what you want in your pocket after all is said in done, factor in any overhead, including PayPal fees, and list a nice rounded figure on your sales page, so that the buyer knows exactly what will be coming out of his/her bank account (plus shipping charges, that, of course, cannot be determined in advance and varies by buyer location). There is no "Blue Book" value for used dolls, so the prices that are charged are arbitrary in many respects. Some people price their dolls within the current market value range, some charge exactly what they paid, etc., etc. I don't really care how a seller comes up with the price - if it's within my price range, I buy it; if it's not, I move on.

As far as Group Orders, of course the host should charge PayPal fees. The organizer is not selling you anything - they are, in effect, doing you a huge favor by taking on the task of running the order and saving the participants money on shipping. As such, I see these transactions as personal ones, where you owe somebody money for placing the order on your behalf. I do not use Personal Payment system to send money in these cases because I want to have some protection should the organizer take off with everyone's money, but I always, without question, will pay for PayPal fees.

The prevalence of sellers on DoA charging PayPal fees is what discourages me from most Marketplace transactions. I generally stick to Group Orders and Splits.

    17. I really hate when people in essence "make you" pay them. As others have said it's against the rules.

I was actually looking at a doll head from the market last night that I would have considered purchasing, but they wanted extra paypal fees so I just passed it up.

Now, I understand that on a multi-hundred dollar purchase, a couple of percent adds up to a lot. So if the person has been really nice with the whole thing, providing me with answers to everything I ask, responding on time, just being an awesome seller, etc. then I'll throw in an extra few bucks to help them out with that since they were so nice to me. But I really don't like being forced.

    18. When purchasing, I would hate to have to pay Paypal fees, since I would have to pay even more than the asking price. However, if asked whether I prefer sellers that don't ask for Paypal fees but already have the Paypal fee calculated into the price over sellers that charge Paypal fees, I would say no. I know it's illegal to ask for Paypal fees. But for me, I worry more about the ending costs than the legal/illegal aspect of the fees. If it's something I really want, and the total price is what I'm willing to pay, then I buy it, regardless whether there are Paypal fees or not. I understand some sellers list Paypal fees as an extra cost as they want to make their listing looks more attractive (lower prices.)

    19. I don't care either way. I pay the fees if I'm asked to, because I very much understand that the seller doesn't want to lose money. However, those I've bought from who charge paypal fees, charge a WAY lower price for the item than others.
I've for example bought several pairs of top quality glass eyes for down to as little as $3 + shipping, but in these cases I've had to pay the paypal fees (which made the price maybe $0.2 higher or so). However, at the same time I've been searching around for them, I've seen a lot of people who've sold the exact same eyes (sometimes same company, sometimes just identical), and every time they cost at least $3 more than the ones with paypal fees. Shipping not included. I've also been in very similar situations when buying a couple of other things, like cosplay wigs, hobby materials etc., and the extra dollars put onto the price of the items without paypal fees alway vastly exceeds the fees I had to pay.

If you do not want to pay paypal fees, you can apparently check the box for "personal payments", because from what I've heard, those are without fees, but in that case, you can't put a claim on the money if the seller decides to swindle you.

    20. There have been many instances on the marketplace where I have simply gone along with it, mostly because at first I didn't know what Paypal's policies were and because I didn't think I had other options. As a seller I will not charge paypal fees. Granted, something like a doll is going to cost a heck of a lot more money, so I'm more likely willing to go along with paypal fees in this case, or at least pay half. As a poster above me said, it really comes down to the total cost with the fees whether the item is worth it or not. For something small, less so. I try not to judge, but paying paypal fees for the seller kind of bugs me. I understand it, but it bugs me. I guess I'm of the mind include the fees in the price and don't tell me you're doing it. Then I still feel like I got a good deal, and you don't have to feel like a jerk for asking for the fees.

Honestly though, charging for paypal fees irks me much less than being grossly over-charged on shipping.
