Pear Shaped Trend....how do you feel?

Dec 21, 2011

    1. I really like the varying body types, just waiting for bigger bust options to go with the pear-shaped bodies. I think I'm in the minority, because I LOVE big hips, thighs and boobs on dolls. (And in real people and other artworks)

One day, I'll prolly get both Chateau Dolls and Leeke art bodied dolls. It's a refreshing option in this hobby. :)

    2. I like them a lot. I like big hips and thighs on real women, and seeing it on dolls is beautiful to me... even if it is often over-exaggerated.

But, then again, I like all body shapes and plan to have as many variations as I can in my collection. Ultra-skinny, pear-shaped, hourglass, small-chested, large-chested, wide-hipped, boyishly slim. I find them all beautiful. :3

    3. I love seeing variety in dolls, so I think that the way companies have been experimenting with body types, including pear-shaped ones, is very exciting! I stopped collecting dolls or even paying to attention to new releases for a few years, so now that I'm back and getting up to date, I'm really amazed by the variety that's being offered!

I own an Aoi-Tuki Otohime Ariake, and I bought her because her body is so like my own (short, smallish bust, monumental junk in the trunk). I don't love her head sculpt, so I've never become very attached to her. She's currently in storage 400 miles away, but I think when I visit my hometown in December, I'll unearth her and seriously start searching for a new head that I would find more appealing, although I will feel kind of guilty for splitting her, since she's rare.

I do tend to prefer pear-shaped dolls that have more adult features, but I don't like mixing adult bodies with childlike features, period. It's the reason I have increasingly moved away from the big eyes, small mouth, highly stylized anime headsculpts. I can admire other peoples' dolls in this style, I just don't want to own them any more. Iplehouse and Dollshe pretty much own my soul (and wallet) these days. Although I do also tend to like extremely out-there, stylized art dolls when they are obviously not intended to be human.

    4. I really do love them! I think they're adorable, and even though it is getting a little overdone, it's still less prevalent than the usual "boy figure" types or hourglasses, and it really adds something to the doll, I think.
My favorite is Doll Chateau. Partially because of how interesting their designs are, and partially because I think the "strange" figures of their dolls are amazing. Like Doll Chateau Alberta? I really love her, especially in the "human centaur" configuration.
So yes. I am a fan of the pear-shaped trend.

    5. I'd prefer apple-shaped bodies though I understand why that's not a trend haha. It's just, being an apple myself, I don't want my babies to be constant reminders of what I don't have. (This is the reason why, pretty as they are, I don't like BJDs with thin/small lips.)

I guess this is a little immature on my part. I'm still trying to slowly get over my insecurities. Perhaps in the future, when I'm more confident and I love myself more, I can come to appreciate other BJD molds. :D

    6. At first, I really wasn't into the exaggerated "pear shape" look on dolls, especially since I prefer more natural body types, but I've been getting warmed up to them. The unique appearance is kind of beautiful too, in a way.

    7. At first I found them unappealing, but the more dolls I look at, the more I like them for being unusual.

    8. Hmm, overall, I say they are cute, but definitely not for me. I just can't ever get used to that shape and I bet buying clothes for that doll is murder....

    9. LOVE LOVE LOVE pear shaped dolls!!

    10. The pear shape is something I can kind of go for if it is well done. I LOVE my DC Alberta's shape and all the DC dolls. I think I am bit biased in my case since I tend to draw my females with really wide hips and really lanky tops and flat chests. But I definitely understand where it is not for everyone and sometimes I have not liked it either depending on the doll. But it lends a certain alien quality, a kind of otherworldly uniqueness and artistic touch and after all, these dolls are works of art and art should not all look the same.

    11. I poked into this thread in the beginning and since it's been a while, I thought I would come back. But honestly, my opinion is still the same. While I appreciate that there ARE people who like these dolls, when I look at them all I can thing of is "Meh. Moving along now." I just don't like them much. It seems awkward and a little (sorry) strange to me. But I have a hard time seeing them in clothes. Nothing will fit well, no mater how tailored. I've looked at photos of them by users, and they still just look awkward in everything. I have that problem where the waist of my pants is actually a size or two bigger than my actual waist, just to fit it over my hips, and when I look at these sort of dolls, that's how I see it. Everything sits strangely and it would bother me. I KNOW people with that shape, a very good friend of mine is that shape and she has a lot of problems with it, so I can't see it as beautiful or cute, whimsical or any other descriptive of that type. All I see is a something that would be problematic to fit clothes and work with.

I like difference, so I'm glad people like it, I'm pleased that there are so many options for body types for the people who don't like the hour-glass figures or the very slim androgynous looks. I just don't like it because I can't see it working out in the end. It has, however, made me very sad a couple of times because I have seen dolls who I REALLY LIKED.... All the way until I got past their waist and the body turned into that. Its not even a matter of transplanting the head, because all the other aspects of the body were so lovely... But there's no way to fix the hip/thigh/backside to make it look... Not pear.

But I buy the dolls I like, and other people buy the ones they like, and no one holds me at gun point and says that I must buy them, or else. So its fine in the end. Other trends have come and gone and this too shall pass. Then perhaps it will be some other feature to be exaggerated. I personally would like to see more hands, I really like some beautiful hands. Perhaps one day companies will start making hands I like. ^-^

    12. I understand what the artists are trying to do and I respect that fully, but it's not something I like at all. I doubt I'd ever own a doll like that. I just don't find them very attractive.

It's also insanely hard to find clothes that properly fit them (to my understanding, let me know if I'm wrong).

I'm super glad though that artists are branching out from the "normal" look, but I hope it turns to another direction soon. I wouldn't want to see all the doll companies going with the pear-shape, that'd be terrible.

    13. it's a matter of taste, i personally don't like them AT ALL, perhaps in the future i might, but the ones i've seen up to now have not awakened my interest in the slightest bit, so i pass from buying those

    14. I absolutely LOOOOOOOVE them, and a Doll Chateau is next on my list. I think that body would pair (hur hur) perfectly with a dollshe boy, and I'm really interested to see how they look together. :D

    15. I like the more realistic dolls that look like real little (beautiful) people eg Iple house.

Doll chateau isn't my taste, sort of reminds me of the nightmare before Christmas-- not an inherently bad thing just not in my realistic taste.

Mikahla I find more appealing but I do feel her hips don't just look wide, they look big and out of scale with her top half. I still think the look is kinda cute but not for me.

I do tend to agree with other commenters regarding clothes. It seems to me that the only clothes style that would look good on the pear shape is a baby-doll style dress that pretty much hides the waist and hips and thigh tops... If the shape has to be basically hidden to look good the point is defeated...

    16. I love the pear shaped dolls. The more exaggerated, the better! But I'm an artist with tastes leaning towards the more cartoony side, so I find stylization and exaggeration of features to be appealing. It tends to lend them a certain character.

However, it would be difficult to put such a stylized doll next to my more realistic doll in photos without them making each other look odd, which would definitely affect my decision in purchasing one.

    17. I'm not a fan, if it fits a character then it's okay but I just don't find it appealing. I'd totally go for it if the bust balanced it out to give it a kind of hourglass pin-up girl effect (my goodness that'd be super neat now that I think of it) but just big hips and thighs isn't my thing, and I'm not awfully fussy about female dolls (I'm a shocker with males though).

I actually didn't notice that with the DC dolls, all I knew was that there was SOMETHING about the body shape that put me off. I just thought it was the lankiness at first.

    18. Hate them. They look stupid without clothes, and look like Fluffy-lumpkins in clothes. Plus, unless there was a bigger market for outfits, and you don't sew, they'd be a b!#$% to shop or commission clothes for. If it was less exaggerated, like say, just bigger on top, that would be cool, but the literal pear shapes? Blehh.

    19. I love the pear, shaped bodies and really want a doll with one, I find them adorable and don't give a false Emma of beauty like the small Saturdays and large busts on some

    20. I think they're cute, but I don't think I'll get one. It's hard enough finding and making clothes for BJDs in general,so pear shaped dolls would be frustrating.
