Pear Shaped Trend....how do you feel?

Dec 21, 2011

    1. There are a few styles I'd prefer to see, like naturally thin bigger dolls (like thin 70cm guys) or chubby dolls...or at least not overly sexualized dolls with huge boobies, exaggerated hourglass shapes or sixpacks.
Throughout the years the guys got more ripped and the girls more sexy, but I'd like to see some average and "boring" bodies :D
And oh, female muscular bodies would be awesome too, in that case I wouldn't mind the sixpack at all.

I feel like the pear shape is, right now, a bit overdone.
One company started it and a lot of them had to hop on the bandwaggon in hopes of getting equally much attention to their work.
Sometimes it can be nice to look at, if the rest looks good too, but in some cases it just feels so...forced.

    2. I am not too found of the pear shapes. most of them are done in a way that is really not common for a human. they are very stylised and it's not something I am looking for.

I would rather see more girls that look like they workout and more 60-70cm guys that look like they don't work out at all. less skinny dolls, maybe even slightly chubby (but not too fat because it's a bit weird to make fat rolls out of hard plastic AND it would reduce mobility). more girls with nice rounded calves (like Limhwa <3 these girls look amazing in leggings!). legs of a normal/average lenght. ... y'know, something that could look the the average person, not just a lingerie model. still very attractive obviously, but more of an obtainable look.

    3. I love it! I don't own any pear-shaped dolls myself, but I may someday. I really enjoy seeing the variety in this hobby. Though it might feel a bit overdone to some, here's to hoping that this trend will bring about even greater variation down the road. A lot of the members on this thread have already shared some really awesome ideas I'd love to see made a reality!

    4. I like them, especially on boy dolls! The DC boy body and the DZ 45-009 bodies are lovely. I'm a wide-hipped boy myself (shaped like the DZ body but shorter and heavier, lol), so it's really nice to see dolls that look like me. I like playing with gender roles and perception. For a more masculinely-characterized doll, I'd stay away from it, but for a doll who likes to play with his gender expression (like my Cordiel, who will eventually have one of those bodies), it's perfect.
Artsier sculpts like the Leeke Mikhaila are also lovely. I really enjoy exaggerated proportions, a lot of the time (though super-busty dolls are kind of a doll turn-off, at least for me). I've seen some really lovely things done with dolls of all shapes and sizes. :)

I think there needs to be more of a range in doll shapes, though. There are two options for each gender: bishonen/slim male model or built male model for guys and waifish or curvy girls. I want more stocky and heavier dolls, darnit! Muscular girls!!! :x But I'll take what I can get. And I do love the sculpting on those DZ 45-009 hips...

    5. I agree with every single word of this (especially muscular girls, and perhaps some plump, stockier dolls in general would also be nice) We need more variety, so at least we get some with the pear-shaped bodies now, though... Hopefully we'll see more differently-sculpted bodies soon too!

    6. I really like them, I would quite like to own one. I think they would present a nice challenge in making clothing for them, and they could be interesting to accessorize. I really like the ones with doe-like faces, so the Doll Chateau ones are definitely my style. I think it's a matter of taste and sculpt though, there are a few I'm not a fan of.

    7. Woooo! You are so unbelievably right. I've been sewing for a Leekeworld Mikhaila recently...man, she's impossible to draft pants for! It really, really helps to use the tape mummy method :) It's great fun, though, because in my opinion pear shaped dolls look good in everything <3

    8. It depends on the doll.

Personally, I like pear-shaped stylizations and when done well (as in, the aesthetics, the style and the proportions are carefully balanced against each other) it can be absolutely beautiful - downright my favourite kind of doll body shape (male and female!).

But when the proportions aren't kept in-check.... Bleh. Not my cup of tea at all.

    9. My friend has a tan skin Mikhala and she is just... weird. I call her thunder thighs! She's kind of cute in a strange way, but I can't see myself ever owning a doll with anything but a normal body shape.

    10. I love the pear shaped bodies...I know that they are not human-like but I do love the aesthetics of it.

    11. I like some of them, and hope that some day there are many different body shapes to choose from. Hopefully, someday, someone figures out how to make a nice bjd that has a bit more weight on her (or him!) and can still pose well.

One thing to point out, though, is that some people here are calling these "unrealistic" body shapes. In actuality, there are people in real life shaped like this. I personally went to school with someone shaped just like Mikhala! It might not be common, but most of the pear shaped dolls out there aren't out of the realm of possibility in humans. In fact, it is more than possible that you know multiple people with this shape, and just don't know it. Most people who look like this are able to dress in such a way that it isn't extremely noticeable.

    12. I like variety, and therefore have nothing against the pear shape.

I'm not planning on owning one personally, but you know...

Hopefully, the introduction of the pear shape (and its popularity) will encourage them to introduce more body types/shapes into the hobby.

    13. I am definitely the target audience for the pear shaped dolls. I love Enaibi, Noble Dolls, Dollpamm...etc. My main problem with Leekeworld are the hip/leg joints. They are just really odd to me, I prefer the joints inside the legs. They may pose better, I'm not sure. I prefer big hips and small busts, coming from a gal with a big bust and small hips. I've always yearned for bigger hips, so I guess that's why these dolls woo me!

I also cannot get over Dust Of Dolls latest sculpt Zouh! She's an apple shaped doll, if I had to label her figure. SO CUTE!

    14. I personally love the pear shapes, especially on Enaibi's dolls and Dust of Dolls, I think they're so unique and cute. There's too many dolls that are super skinny and have a huge bust, the pear shaped dolls stand out!

    15. I've always loved looking at photos of pear shaped dolls, but I once owned a Mikhaila, and she was just tooooo big for me. :/ I was really quite disappointed because I was super excited about owning my own.

I still find myself thinking that maybe I'll give a pear shaped body another try one day lol

    16. I wanted to update my opinion since its been a while since I started this thread.

I now dig it mostly as I see the evolution of bjds progressing. I didn't think they'd grow on me but they did

we first had single joints with blocky bodies or single torso that generally looked...off (to me) but none the less pioneered bjds.

then we has the smoother single joints branches to anime vs realism, double joints , unique joints like fairyland or shinydoll. multi jointed torsos like in Loongsoul or dollshe and now le pair shape trend or the "art doll" trend.

It's the new "it" look and hopefully in the future as more companies establish we will see muscular, stocky, and androgynous types circulating for both males and females.

    17. i think they can look pretty awesome in the right clothes but honestly i'm not the biggest fan, they are just to strange looking for my tastes, i prefer a doll to be more natural looking

    18. I am not a fan of the overly exaggerated body parts in general. I'd rather have a thicker body so it was more like reality.

    19. I absolutely love them! i feel like people are taking them a wee bit too seriously with the whole body issues problem with them, but i personally cant wait to get my hands on one!

    20. For me girls are a hard sell. My first doll is a mini sized girl and she is very busty and hippy. I love her but she is difficult to size. I have another girl a volks iris on sd 16 bod and I do love her shape with her pronounced hips you don't see on dolls that often. I have recently begun to like the Apple bottom body. I'm not a fan of dollpamm I felt the promo pictures oversexuallized the dolls(the dolls are all photographed with a very arched back with their butts sticking out) and made them look rather elf like. I at first hated doll chatue(sorry I know it's spelled wrong) I felt the female body was very skinny in a freaky way and the hips were very large, however after looking at owner pictures I've grown to appreciate the body, just not the tiny dolls. I love leekeworld art body! I feel they did the body a favor by having large heads so it is known the doll isn't meant to look realistic. I also think the dolls have very cute face sculpts which helps sell the body.

I want to add...I at first hated dollshe dolls. I felt they were to...lanky the heads were to small for the bodies and the face sculpt just meh. Then dollshe introduced the dsam bodies an I really hated them..aesthetically. I was impressed by the posing possibilities though so I impulse bought a Bernard with my tax return. He is absolutely one of my favorite dolls. I can never and will never sell the guy. As far as aesthetics go he strolls around here half naked.

My point is I may feel like I hate doll but when it comes down to it I really don't know how I feel about them until AFTEr I've owned them. For me I love a doll who will stand solid for days along with having really great features. One day I may purchase a doll chatue girl and she may or may not stick around but I won't know until I've owned her.
