Pear Shaped Trend....how do you feel?

Dec 21, 2011

    1. I do not think they are attractive, though I'm glad the option is available for those who do.
IMO, the wide-hipped doll thing began as a reaction to the original fashion dolls' exaggeratedly huge bust, tiny waist/hips. People squawked about that for years, about how this impossible body type was setting a standard in our culture, and girls were growing up thinking they were supposed to look like that. The fashion dolls' manufacturer finally changed the doll's body, and the change rippled through the industry.
Personally, I get a little bored by all the demands for realism. I'm all for accepting oneself as is, and for our culture to have more varied standards for beauty that include more than tall, thin blondes. But we want our dolls to be visually appealing, and realism often isn't all that appealing. Face it, if dolls looked like most of our neighbors or co-workers, we wouldn't buy them.

    2. i think very much that the pear shaped dolls are lovely and i look forward to owning one
      someday

    3. I love the pear shaped bodies. In humans, wide hips and narrow shoulders/small breasts are just beautiful, and I find same to be true with dolls.

    4. Not my thing as I prefer realistic dolls, or stylized idealistic dolls, but I don't have a problem with it. Each to his/her own.

    5. I love them! I like that they lend a bit of variety to the standard doll shape that not many companies seem to stray from. Granted, I do prefer it more toward the realism side, but I think it's good that it exists because I love to see variation in body shape, even if it gets a little cartoony at some point (looking at you, DC).

Speaking of the sexualization of the hips and the connection to childbearing argument that came up earlier... I think that's kind of a silly argument given that almost all of the doll bodies are conventionally attractive in some exaggerated way (so many perfect bust-waist-hip ratios, man, we don't even seem to notice anymore). But isn't that always the complaint? I get a little tired of it, if only for the fact that it seems odd to me to accept one that has an issue and then reject another and use that same issue to justify its rejection.

    6. To each their own, I woulnt buy one, because I prefer androgynous bodies. But Sure, I think they're aesthetically interesting. But I have no desire to have a doll of that shape.

    7. I love them to bits, but the lack of options for clothing is making me not want one, I would prefer less extreme versions of the pear shape, but I can imagine that being rather annoying to cast etc, so Im not holding out too much hope for a company itself to produce one.

    8. Variety is a plus, however, I can't and won't ever like those pear-shaped dolls. I'm attracted by idealised human proportions, but in a realistic way.

    9. I found them quite interesting but not enough to buy one. It's must be hard to find perfect clothes for them too.

    10. I don't quite like exaggerated proportions, whatever those are... but more than wide hips I hate immensely huge boobs, and those are far more usual. Doll Chateau's bodies are really nice except from the too long necks... I hate that aswell ._.

    11. I don't care for them. They trigger the hebbies for me.

    12. I agree - shiver - blech!

    13. I really love it :D they're so cute but wOW HOW DO THEY FIT PANTS ON THOSE HIPS?

    14. I like the dolls, though I don't know that I'd buy one. I do like to see ones that belong to other people. I can definitely appreciate the pear shaded bodies, though they're not for me.

    15. It depends on the doll. I've recently brought one home who's in-between sizes (taller than a tiny, shorter than a mini), and she fits into clothes for both, more or less. For bottoms, she can share clothes with my minis, and they fit her hips just fine! (The length isn't perfect, but skirts are great.) For tops, however, she fits better into something more tiny-scale. I'm still working on clothes for her, but knowing this, I can build her a bit of a mix-and-match wardrobe without having to sew everything myself.

I can't imagine it's much worse than some of the more huge large-scale dolls, or the ladies that are particularly well-endowed, or any other off-sized doll.

    16. I love pear-shaped dolls… :)
More large hips, less huge boobs… ;)
      (personal preference here...)

    17. I adore the pear-shaped dolls!! They are so precious and unique. It'd be a challenge to clothe them, but i love making clothes for my dolls, so it'd be a fun challenge. Being a girl with big thighs and a big butt with a small waist, i feel included in the doll community now that there are doll bodies to represent mine! Even if the features are exaggerated. :)

    18. It's the same for me.
Also I love doll-chateau's long long necks.

    19. I like the pear shape dolls but my body looks like an apple right now. I would like to make a fat dollfie with a big big belly and big hips and boobs like the Venus of Willendorf.

    20. Everyone has a different "uncanny valley". For me, weirdly unrealistic proportions paired with otherwise realistic features, such as chateau dolls, really creeps me out. But some people think my dolls are creepy even though I always thought they were well proportioned.
