Pear Shaped Trend....how do you feel?

Dec 21, 2011

    1. I find it rather interesting. The aesthetic is something different, but not different at all. As an animator in training, I like to see different body types in proportion to try and work with them. It seems to me that society has focused in on the slimmer female physique as the idea, with the hourglass being the sexual ideal. I like seeing the DC bodies, as they look more adult than Mikhailia (whose sad baby-ish face turned me off immensely) and yet are gangly and artistic.

To each their own, you know?

    2. The more body types, the better. Different silhouettes create more of a distinction between characters and different proportions can suit different personality types. I don't think they're any more exaggerated than most of the female dolls that I've seen- the heroic proportions and pinched waist hourglass figures don't exist in the real world. I haven't seen one with a face that I like though.

    3. I think the only one OP listed that I didn't like was Leeke World Mikhala. I find it very unsettling to look at. As I think someone mentioned in an earlier reply, it's not far enough proportion-wise in either an unrealistic or realistic direction to be appealing to me, personally. I really like DC's bodies though. They're my favorite out of the list as everything about their bodies are exaggerated.

    4. I personally don't like them at all. But to each their own.

    5. i really like them personally... but i'd rather have a doll that's both pear shaped and chubby... you don't see that much of these... they usually only look like wide

    6. They're not to my liking, sadly. I find the thin torso and wide hips to be grossly mismatched, and that's a huge turn-off.

    7. I honestly don't see what the big problem with them is. Our dolls already have oversized heads, unrealistic leg length and face proportionality, disproportionate hand size, inflated breasts, weird ribs on otherwise healthily sculpted dolls, etc., so why are so many people having a hard time accepting a body type that actually exists if not for our society's andro-centric conditioning to see a woman's beauty in our societal standards as her worth, which has been proved time and agan.

      *cough*

I am a woman who has very large hips/butt relative to the rest of my body, including bust, and while I have been both grossly oversexualized AND harrassed for having an "ugly" body (you really can't please everyone, can you?), being able to have a beautiful doll with nicely exaggerated proportions similar to mine, and seeing such support for this type of doll makes me feel validated as a person; so I guess it's just really problematic when so many people think these dolls are "grotesque" or "misshapen" because jeez... that could be someone's body type you're insulting!

    8. I see no problem about it. I guess I easily accept everything, I think it's just an expression of art. Not everything must be 'realistic'ally close to our body..
I wouldn't want to buy it though. Even if it's pear shaped, it must be good proportioned, but that's just my taste =)

    9. I love them, absolutely love them. I draw pear shaped figures all of the time because that is my ideal figure on a woman. Wide hips are so womanly and glamorous to me, pair it with a small waist and it just looks wonderful! Hourglass is not for me at all! I don't like large breasts, broad shoulders or a wide ribcage so I don't want those on my doll(well one is busty but she'll be the exception). This isn't the real world, so we're allowed to have a doll with any figure we like! Mine is pear, and I'm so, SO happy that companies offer dolls with this beautiful shape. :D

    10. You said everything I was thinking! I lean a little pear-shaped myself, and even though I obviously don't look like the Leeke Art Body girls or a DollChateau, I somehow take it a little personally when people say the body shape looks gross. But people in this hobby have vastly different tastes, and just because I happen to really like the big butt look on dolls, it doesn't mean anyone else *has* to buy one of those dolls.

Anyway, I don't have much to add, just that I think the pear-shaped dolls have a beautiful, sensual look and I think if you are going to make a stylized doll (literally all BJD are stylized anyhow), it's not a bad way to go. I like seeing a variety of body types in the BJD world and I hope we see more of other shapes, especially for female dolls, because there is a sort of cultural significance to what doll companies make and what we elevate as the ideal female form. I'd really like to see more unconventionally beautiful shapes- fat dolls, muscular girl dolls, girls with bigger tummies and thighs. Meanwhile I think the "pear shaped trend" is encouraging.

    11. They aren't really my taste, but at the same time I can appreciate them. They look very artistic to me. At this point, I've mostly seen the blank dolls, undressed. (I'm new. ) I'd be really interested to see some of them fixed up.

    12. I'm really glad they have them. Growing up I was thin as a rail, no breasts, giant hips and butt. My mother-in-law was very impressed with the dolls that are pear shaped. (I think she had the same shape growing up too). It's nice seeing dolls that look like actual people instead of a perfect cookie cutter.

    13. I at first was not a fan but recently have been looking at the Leeke World Mikhaila and am in love with her and would jump at her in pure rose skin. I am a super fan of the pear shape trend, so cute and squishy!

    14. I loooove the pear shape girls! I really like the aesthetic of a big bottom and a skinny waist. :3 I probably wouldn't own many of the very stylised dolls myself, but I have a few of the more "realistic" pear-shape girls on my wish list.

    15. I'm not really a fan of the pear shaped bodies but my friend owned a Mikhala and he said it was really difficult to find clothes for her...and as a result he didn't use her much. They don't really attract me either to be honest...

    16. Pear shape? Lav it! :D Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing some dolls with some actual meat on them...meat that isn't muscle. I've never once been overweight or underweight in my life, and I get so dreadfully tired of seeing only two body types idolized in the world. What I wouldn't give for more diversity amongst dolls too! I have so many character ideas that I want to embody in BJDs, but am reluctant because they come in all different shapes and sizes, from short and malnourished to towering and morbidly obese.

I have a Leekworld Ariana currently, and while we're not exactly bonding, it is definitely not an issue over her body. Even if I do end up selling her, I foresee myself owning more Leekeworld resin. It takes a bit of scrounging, but there are artisans out there who make gorgeous clothes for them. They have such wonderful curves, and I like the fact that we can chose between a busty girl or a non. If SQlab wasn't so darned expensive, I'd buy one of their Yamato bodies for my incoming DIM Marcellina head in a heartbeat! It's adorably chubby next to other SD girl bodies.

    17. I would love to see some bodies that are larger (55-60cm) and are actual realistic depictions of fat distribution on an overweight or obese person, either male or female. What I have seen are bodies that are small, and have pear-shaped torsos with slender limbs. There are a couple of tiny dolls that have a realistic depiction of an obese body (Fat Fairie, one artist doll on The Joint). There are no male dolls that display obese bodies. There are no larger female dolls that display realistic depictions (with fat distribution continuing into the limbs) of obese bodies in either male or female. There is one 60cm female obese doll, Sharmistha, with slender limbs (large in the torso and upper thighs only). There is one 45cm female doll with a "curvy" torso (Freakstyle Salome) and slender limbs (and unlike the 60cm doll, in this one the sculpt is consistent, so the distribution of weight looks realistic).

    18. I agree with this whole-heartedly! And I had never heard of Freakstyle Salome, but she is gorgeous IMO. I want her. :) The distribution is better than all I've ever seen.

As for the pear shaped...most of the time I'm more indifferent. It's mostly about the head sculpt for me. But, I did fall victim for the DollChateau. I'd love a MSD mature female body with a Charles head. The fantasy lankiness of it all takes me to a whimsical place. I'd have a blast blushing and faceupping her into some sort of otherworldly creature. It removes my mind from what's real so I can truly take liberties.

    19. This. So much of this. Why do we always see heavier tinies when we do see curvy dolls at all? Salome is gorgeous, and I wish her the very best release, but she's still under 50cm. There are a couple of companies out there(Their names elude my mind) with bodies that look ever so slightly heavier than the average resin boy or girl, shirtless/in a croptop and placed next to other dolls. But that's really it, and it's not like they are really any different by themselves, or with clothes on.

...That rant being over, I do love Sleeping Elf's Coco and Bonbon. I don't own either myself, but they are oh so sweet! And their faces are very versatile, making terrific boys or girls.

    20. also agreeing! The non-slim dolls all are tube shaped. Although it'd be hard to make/fit clothes to a body that had love handles and rolls. The crevices would need to be deep enough for crop tops or jeans to look like they were muffin topping, which is hard to do with a mold that is used for mass production.

I'd really love to see something like the Leekeworld Art volume body in a 50cm size. Because if you're breaking the standard size, you may as well break the standard height. Then I could have my bubbly, squat, rollypolly girl. :D
