Portraying Dollie Drug Use?

Jan 15, 2008

    1. i guess maybe you could as long as you made sure the tital had a warning, and a specific one at that

like "warning adult themed" can mean any number of things, so unless you have a ton of adult themed material i would be more specific like

      "warning: drug use"

but even then i think maybe they should find a bjd website or group that has a better age rang

because if i remember right this is a 14 + forum

    2. This one is very difficult for me to comment on.
On the one hand, it creates a more realistic personality, and gives depth to the dolls story.
But on the other, have you ever felt strangely when a close friend that you looked up to said that they had at one point done drugs?

I think that it all depends on the individual. Some people can handle it, and some people would struggle with the idea of their perfect little angel being a drug addict.
Maybe, if it were cigarettes or alcohol it would be easier to accept, even though those aren't very good to be doing either.
It also depends on the kind of doll.
You don't want you're little girl doing drugs, but maybe you wouldn't feel as guilt if your DOI was doing it. At least he's full grown and can make adult decisions like that.

o.o; am I making any sense?

    3. I've known some friends and acquaintances who've been addicted to smack. It's not a pretty picture.

On the other hand, it would be hypocritcal of me to condemn the portrayal of drug use in a fictionalized manner. I do quite a lot of writing, for personal enrichment and fun as well as having recieved a degree in journalism some years ago.

If drug use is part of the character's habits or background, then go for it. There is a potential story gold mine in dealing with a character's descent into drug use or worse.

Gods know, I've done much worse in the stories I've written than portray drug addiction.:|

    4. As a whole for the "BJD World," I do not think that portrayal of drug use is such a horrendous offense. However, being nearly twenty-one now, I can't say that I find it suitable for thirteen year olds in a highly glorified manner (Such as those on DoA). But, if it's made subtle and very nonchalant I don’t see it to be a problem in any age group.

Take Alice in Wonderland, for example. Opium is used very openly but is never addressed or glorified. It simply, exists there. Enough so that even Disney, the leaders in child appropriate material (At least at that time anyway) thought it was couth and in good taste to still portray so that the authenticity of the story’s meaning would not be lost.

Now, as for in general, on another site, outside of PG13 restrictions I would say I have no problem with it. I think it is a very real symbol of many things: Weakness, wealth, joy, fancy-free, grief, ect. It can be the enlightenment, or the confinement. It has beautiful controversy that way. But, I would not wish for it here. I do not condone the act. I would not like to see my art misconstrued by individuals that cannot grasp the depth and complexities of my works. I would not like seeing the message used out of context.

    5. After a good laugh, I have to second that one. ^___^ Good times, goooood times.

    6. Me too. I'd never do drugs, but the the doll is almost an extension...and can..do things I would never do. Things like that have fascinated me in a way. (Not as in wanting to do it..please dont misinterpret my words ><) But, in the brain factors and things I guess. I think its alright for a doll to be who it needs to be, and how we display it. Long as it doesnt go too far; we need to respect each otehr about it aswell. ^^;

    7. I wouldn't let a BJD I own be addicted to drugs or something like that because... it's hard to explain but I kinda look for perfection in BJDs, inhuman perfection. drug addiction would ruin that perfection.
But I don't care if someone else's doll is drug addicted or anything

    8. I have many chars who do drugs amung other things. Two of which are in doll form.
One of which I posted pictures of where he could have been drunk, high, hung over or exhausted, bored and sprawling on the floor or even dpressed.
I think the only reason one would even assume he was on drugs was the fact that I did indeed say he was a druggy.
I was highly surpised that from there it offended someone. Not because I'm shocked durg use may offend someone but that pictures that could imply a number of situations would.
Now if I'd come out and said "Oh yeah he's all druged out and drunk and stoned and ect here" Oh yeah. Sure I'd understand. I'd also had put a warning on it. But without any of that and just the knowledge that the char does, has and may have indeed done drugs doesn't warent offense to that specific setting.

I don't think it's wrong to portray drug use or anything else in the BJD world but depicting it, depending on the location, I think deserves a warning. Granted if the sight has a section set aside for dolls on drugs and you're offended by that and proceed to go into that section and comment about how horrible it is? I think you should at least be banned from that area purly on a maturity level. I mean really. If it offends you and you've been warned don't look!

To me its similar to a doll with a birthdefect so they only have one leg or something. Is that wrong? Nope. Could it offend or bother someone? Yes. If a warning is put in the title of the thread where pictures, story ect is is it okay to then post pictures, story ect? Yes. Is it then right for someone who is offended to post as much there? No. I personally don't think so. You were warned for a reason after all.

Bleh. Low blood sugar is probably making this more ranty then logical. I'll stop now lol

    9. Drug addiction is a very real part of our society.
it would be absurd for some one to be offended by a doll story where the depicted character has an addiction... who are we to judge when we dont know the full reason for the story or the depicted addiction... lets not forget how close the personalities we see in our dolls are to our own... depicted addiction may be a positive way for some one to work out some serious internal issues.... bravo to all those who dare to walk along that gritty line.

    10. How? How could it be positive? I can understand how it might help a recovering addict to also have their doll face recovery from addiction, but I can't understand how it might help anyone overcome anything if their doll's character is still an addict. Your doll, your choice however. If it's an important part of your character then it should be part of the doll's story, but I don't see how any drug addiction story can be a positive thing.

I don't think Den of Angels is the right place for drug addicted dolls' photostories, however. A 13+ forum with a reputation for family friendly access to the BJD world isn't the place for graphic depictions of anything of an adult nature.

    11. I definitely see your point about this. However, not to get into a boring (and probably inappropriate) "been there done that" story, I can see how having a drug addicted doll might be an outlet for someone possibly going through some kind of rehab process; for instance, I know someone who was a cutter and going through mental health therapy for her problems. She used to love to write stories, and a lot of times she would write stories about young girls who were suicidal and hurt or killed themselves. It was her way of coping with the desire to hurt herself and projecting it into something else to keep from doing it to herself. So I can see why someone who has withdrawl symptoms might want to project their desire for drugs onto their doll so they can have some relief (mentally anyway) without hurting themselves in real life.

That probably makes no sense, but it's my two.

    12. I personally have absolutely no problem with it, as long as it's executed well. I definitely think that I would be more prone to read/follow someone's photostory, or character because they have that kind of darkness to it. I love things like that.

I also think that it should be fine as long as there is a fair warning on the title, like "contains drug use/adult material" etc.

It really can help the story move along or character development. Personally, one of my characters' father was a mafia drug smuggler, and, the same character also happens to sell/smoke pot (but then again I don't consider pot to be in the same league as stuff like cocaine and heroin).

Anyway ^^;; that's just my own personal thinking.

    13. I don't think I'd like to see dolls modelled on drug addicts.
I like beautiful dolls, however, drug addicts are not beautiful people in real lives.
So I can't imagine how they can be beautiful if one do want to portray their drug uses realistically

    14. I normally wouldn't see such stories as I don't really like drug addicts. Even if they are dolls.

But if there's a solid plot rather than a short story of 'I'm gonna abuse and use this drug and that's the end of the story' type, I'll definitely read it.

I think I would most definitely read photostories of how the 'drug addict' turn over a new leaf or that he/she got busted and stuffs. Or fantasy drugs that can make one grow stronger, etc.

      So ya...2 cents worth here...:sweat

    15. I used to have friends in the entertainment/music industry and I've seen enough drug abuse to last me a lifetime. I don't want to see it in my dolls; my dolls live in a happy world that I enjoy escaping to. That being said, it's up to the owner if they want a character that is drug addicted. It's a tough one because on the one hand owners can do what they like with their dolls including setting them on fire if they wished. On the other hand, DOA being a 13 or 14+ forum I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with stories glorifying drug usage. It's the same with certain sexual content.....because of the minimum age of some of the forum members, drug usage is (for the most part) something probably better left for age-appropriate forums.

I do think a warning on the photostories is fine though....that way if you know you'll be offended you don't have to look...;)

    16. If I saw a photostory that involved a doll with any sort of addiction I would not be offended. Actually I'd probably more even more interested. Addiction is a sad and painful thing to go through, and to see a character go through the struggles and hopefully make an attempt to change would be interesting for me to read. My boy smokes (cigarettes..XD) and his mother is a raging alcoholic. I'm not easily offended but I know some people are. For those who are I would simply suggest putting some kind of warning in the title to avoid any kind of controversey.

Considering a lot of people base their characters off stories they create themselves, not one everyone wants to have a happy-go-lucky Mary-Sue sort of theme to it. Yeah I know this a 13+ site..but I say as long as it's not too grapic, or there are some sort of warnings of the suggested content mentioned..it's A-Ok in my book!

    17. I think it's personal preference. Myself, in some characters, I adore it. I'm a big fan of character angst and using it to further a characters personality, and one of my oldest and most used original characters was a drug addict/alcoholic for a year and a half. He only smokes and drinks now, though.

So I could totally get behind it. But I understand how it could be offending to some people, and if I ever made him into a doll and posted something about that particular habit I'd defiantly try and put a tag on it that warned people sensitive to that material that it was in there. I think bjds are a form of creative expression- in thier characters, face ups and clothes and all that... and photography of them is even more so. And as long as your aren't doing anything dangerous to a living thing, I say anything for the sake of art!

    18. I, personally, would skip a photostory/photoshoot that displayed drug use.

To each their own, and I'm sure the creator of the photos had a specific reason for including that content, but I personally do not find in entertaining on any level, nor do I feel it 'adds to' a story. Personally, I think drug use is a very, very unfortunate thing in society and I find it depressing when the topic is 'romanticized', including in books, film and television.
(...and the sight of needles give me the heebie-jeebies. Even in a medicinal setting. lol)

      I wouldn't say that it should be blacklisted in any way, but a warning tag would be very considerate for sensitive people like me. ^^;
I'm okay with seeing socially acceptable drug use such as cigarette-smoking and drinking alchohol, though. Who dosen't enjoy a fine glass of red wine every now and then? ;)

    19. Having a drug addicted doll isn't wrong, but...
I'd enjoy reading it/looking at it as much as I'd enjoy reading about a doll rapist - GAG!

    20. As everyone says, "To each his own," and I believe this phrase is probably one of the best to use. Needless to say, I believe a proper warning is just common courtesy in this situation. It is the same way with box openings that give warnings of "dolly nudity".

Now to go into what I think on the topic. If I offend anyone, I shall go ahead and ask for forgiveness in advance.

Though I do not do drugs myself, I have been around enough people who do in fact do drugs to not be offended by them. Drugs, be it hard of otherwise, are now a very common part of society. No matter how it is banned, there will always be a group of people who will do them. Now, saying that, the only time I think I would get slightly upset with someone depicting doll drug use would be if they depicted it completely wrong. As far as I can see, there is very little that you can romanticized about drug use. I know as soon as I say this someone will turn around and say that it is not in the least bit romantic, but I will go ahead and answer these comments by saying I romanticize things and even think of things in a very different way than most people.

So, to rap my little rant up, I will say no, I find no problems in depicting "Dolly Drug Use".
