Portraying Dollie Drug Use?

Jan 15, 2008

    1. It definitely would depend on the story, but I might look at it. Drugs don't offend me (other than drug whore sex scenes), so I'd probably be cool with it.

    2. Does it offend me: No, not at all.
Would i read them: it altogether depends on the photo story.
so i guess the answer is no it doesn't bother me.

    3. I would not be offended
but...I would most likely not look at it. I don't know why really but I have always gotten a sick stomach watching movies about people destroying themselves with drugs. I always found this odd as I personally know no one with a drug addiction????? I have never had a friend hurt themselves in this way? Strangely, I can watch horror movies until my eyes bleed, I can watch depressing dramas etc...

Watching drug addicts rips my heart out. It is utterly haunting.

    4. I would read it. It wouldnt bug me. But I dont thing people should do that to there dolls though.:| What if your doll doesn't like doing drugs and your giving it to them any way?:? Like may be wine here and there would be ok. But not all the time. My doll likes wine. But I never give it to him. Every one is differant.

    5. For me it would depend on the type of drug use and the actual scenes depicted. I'd most likely skim over it before deciding whether or not to read it.

    6. You know what. Generally, I don't care. If drugs were being used in a doll story, I would assume that it was a drama. If its a drama, its fine with me, but if its a humor and drugs are being used, it doesn't seem right.

    7. The joy of the BJD is that essentially, they become people. They have lives, histories, pains, weaknesses, and if drug abuse was part if a dolls life, I wouldn't see anything wrong with it. If anything, I would read the story, just to see what drove them to needing drugs, and I'd sympathize with them.

    8. I think this would probably be a good thing, as it generates thought as to the benefits and more importantly consequences of abusing drugs.

    9. I too don't see anything wrong with the depiction, but I readily admit it is something I'd skip over very quickly. Drug use is a sore subject for me and I like to avoid seeing it.

I think though that drug use, especially in the form of made up drugs has the ability to be very fascinating. In a book I love there is a drug called Orpheus that brings back hallucinations of the dead that were dear to the user. Seeing this same sort of idea being carried out in a photo story would definitely intrigue me despite my aversion to drug use in stories. So ultimately how masterfully the situation was handled would determine how likely I am to not just pass over it as something I don't deem worth viewing.

    10. If it's YOUR doll, then YOU get to decide what he likes. Yes. It actually does work that way.

    11. How would you feel if you saw a photo story of a doll who had some kind of drug addiction? Would you read it, or skip over it and move on, or even be offended?

Well I don't think it would be inappropriate at all... these dolls are manifestations of people's characters right? People will write stories about all sorts of things... I would find it interesting personally but that's just me. Yes, people are going to be offended... it's like when games and box sets list the reason the rating is as it is... "alchohol, smoking, drug use" etc. That goes along with the whole "Why don't people mind as much when a movie contains all these things but they do mind whne it's a game that contains all these things" Everything starts with a story and whether the medium is a book or a movie or a webcomic or a doll, the story itself will not change according to the medium.

I think it's hypocritical of people to start on about how it's SO inappropriate to show a bare ass in a game and have the main character snort cocaine but have no qualms about a music video showing tonnes of asses in thongs or having sex scenes in a movie (assuming they were of the same R -rated sorta thing) and talk about how a character in a book does drugs (like Sherlock Holmes)

Would it make a difference if the character in question was addicted to alcohol or if they were addicted to heroin? How about a made-up drug?

I think it does change it a bit... because o the way our culture perceives these types of drugs. Alchohol addiction is a terrible thing but it IS more 'accepted' than being addicted to heroine I guess because it's legal and heroine is not. In the end if you are addicted it'll destroy your life.

A made up drug? Well I suppose that's 'different' too... if you have a character addicted to something that has all the properties of heroine but is called something else you 'made-up' the general public is less likely to squack... but I think that for people who 'care' would try to understand the type of troubles such a character would be going through, being addicted to a drug like that... for me there is no difference but for the way things are perceived by the general public, then yes, it does.

Is drug use/addiction too "gritty" for the BJD world?

Absolutely not. I mean like... who's to say "Well that's too mature of a theme so therefore it shouldn't be done" if someone who wrote a dark and 'mature' story and decided to make a character out of it then all the power to them. That's like saying "well you can't make that type of story into a cartoon or a game but you CAN make that type of story into a movie with real people" The medium should not restrict the type of things allowed to be portrayed in it. How stupid does it sound to say "Well you aren't allowed to paint portraits in watercolours but you can in oil paints."

    12. For awhile, My doll Drake was cutting himself, and had scars all over his arm.
My parents became offended by this, and made me remove them.
Honestly, I was annoyed by this. A lot. Because it was part of his background, and story.
When I get the Apollo BBB, I was planning on him having a smoking problem, or being addicted to heroin, but It worries me, because I don't want my parents getting offended again.
I find it very interesting when people's dolls have addictions and such. It adds to the character.

    13. There's a fine line between having complete freedom to do whatever you want with your doll and also respecting the rules your parents lay down. If you're under 16, you can't leave home and support yourself financially, so your parents are responsible for you and if they are unhappy with the things you are portraying with your dolls (or doing in other hobbies) you do have to respect their wishes. If you're living in a home you pay for yourself, playing with dolls you've bought all by yourself, if you are 100% independent, you don't have to worry about what other people think of your dolls.

It does make me curious how flippant people can be about drugs sometimes.
Smoking cigarettes is one thing...but heroin?! If you'd ever known someone you love be ruined through a heroin addiction, you wouldn't be so free and easy about the subject. Having a heroin addiction is not the same as having a 'smoking problem', and having both as an 'either/or' in one sentence boggles the mind.

I don't think drug addition, particularly addiction to hard drugs, is a fitting subject for a 13+ forum such as this, there are plenty of other forums online where darker subjects are more appropriate.

    14. Drugs are a part of life, whether we like it or not :( And today's average 13 year old has been exposed to a lot worse than implied drug use...

I dont think anyone should have to censor something that is just a part of their dolls persona because thats their right, but just like in the real world I can choose not to see it. Most people even have the courtesy to add a warning so that those who wouldnt want to be exposed to that wont be.

Dolls are characters, just like in stories and movies, and everyones story is different, and not everyones life is filled with sunshine and cupcakes so drugs would naturally work their way in one character or another.

At the same time, theres double standards. If I see a doll hitting a bong, im probably going to burst into laughter. But if I see a photostory with the title "HOW TO COOK CRACK ROCK ((LONG FENG CHO- DZ WHATEVER))", thats definatly something that doesnt belong here. As long as no one is *really* pushing the bar on content and explicity, we should all just exercise our freedom to not look.

    15. To be completely fair, though, you don't know all the ins and outs of the poster's doll's story and what he/she has in mind or why. I didn't find the post so mind boggling--how serious to make a doll's problems is a legitimate thing to have to decide--just stick with smoking or make things really serious? Just because one participates on DoA, does not mean that their dolls have to be restricted to PG13. All it means is that some kinds of photo shoots and stories aren't permitted here. I doubt most owners change their dolls' characters just to fit with DoA's rules. Most of the discussions about content that show up in the debate forum are not focused just on DoA--otherwise there would be very little to discuss :)

    16. To me, It's like nudity, some people might beinsulted, but if it's in a restricted part of the forum it's fine. Might get very interesting, acually : D

    17. It's true, my dolls have some very mature themes in their stories, it just means that I won't be posting photostories about that here.

Yes, a smoking problem is different than a heroin addiction and I'm not sure if Daikon-Chili was trying to refer to the 2 on the same level or not but everyone knows different people... I have friends who know people who have that addiction... I can't imagine what that would be like.

The last thing anyone on DoA would want to do is offend people so I suppose if someone was REALLY offended because a heroin addiction was portrayed as less than horrifying in their doll you could politely PM the owner about it.

    18. I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
And My parents were not polite about it at all.
If they had said, "Hon, I don't like that. Could you remove them?" Or something lie that, I wouldn't be annoyed at all and would have been very understanding.
They threatened to lock my doll up and questioned my sanity. They went overboard, and made a scene.
I realize that I might have taken things a bit far by putting the scars on his arm, but it is, part of his story.
And the Heroin and Smoking? Part of that character's story as well. I'm not trying to come off as being "Easy on the subject" at all. I understand that addiction is very very bad, but my characters have real life stories. Not all of them have bad lives or have addictions, but the ones that do have them for a reason.
      I respect your opinions.

    19. I'm sorry if this doesnt fit here, but where do people get those adorable BJD ciggarets? I guess it wouldnt matter to me if they use drugs. Its very interesting to me.

    20. You can make your own pretty easily. Take a Q-tip and cut off the ends so you have a cardboard stick. Use colored pencil and pastels to color the ends and then spray with sealant and voila! Dolly cigarettes. You can also buy little doll sized packs off of ebay really cheap, and I think maybe Dollmore (someone correct me if I'm wrong) sells cigs too. The cig in my icon was a homemade one.
