Portraying Dollie Drug Use?

Jan 15, 2008

    1. I'm not sure I'd mind, if it was handled respectfully and maybe had a disclaimer or some such. Though, I'd be a little disturbed if I saw it here.

I am actually searching for a way to make an absinthe set for BJDs, now that a) I've educated myself on absinthe and what it does/the truths and myths/its history and b) now that its legal in my country as a liqueur. But, I'd be a little unnerved if I saw BJDs frisking with purple rabbits while on acid. I think drunken shenanigans, in moderation and done sparingly, could be amusing, but not here. There's under-21's present!:eusa_sile

    2. I wouldn't react at all.
To me, it would be no different from reading about drug abuse in a book, or seeing it on TV.

I don't see BJDs as innocent "things." Yes, some of them look like children, and they are stereotypically a child's toy, but they are just objects.

And how many people portray their dolls as being in a sexual relationship?

    3. Theres a kind of translucent clay they make now, I think you have to buy it on ebay or something though because its not american. That would work well for the glasses, but you'll probably have to get craftier with the fountain.

    4. Thanks for the tip, fallenfae!

Thinking it over a little, I think I might be a tad unnerved if I saw a child doll involved, likewise in a sexual plot. But, then, if I figured it out, I'd click out and scroll past (and report it to the mods if it's against the rules).

    5. It might be entertaining XD It doesn't really bother me unless it was like "I LOVE DRUGS YOU SHOULD DO IT TOO" lol, then I'd be apalled, and I'd spam the thing with mad comments.

    6. I wouldnt skip it. I'd probably read it.

One of my characters has a real addiction problem. Just on anything that can get him numb when he needs it. He later gets a girl he cares for fall into it and then regrets it. Which later causes a huge fight. Even though the girl was thinking about stopping anyway.

So I think it's more about a persons character than the doll, which is kinda a medium for portraying an individuals story.

    7. If the model was going to be my own doll? Absolutely not. :)

    8. There's a short story entiled "One Over Twelve" that revolves around drug use. But, keeps to a really artistic presentation. Then, there's books like A Scanner darkly, made-up drug, humorous flare. The popularity of Trainspotting has stayed through the years.(I've seen a few dolls meant to mimic Simon.) Does anyone remember the episode of Cowboy bebop with the guy that takes red-eye?
It's a vast subject. It's been covered a lot. But if in the right hands, it always has a new flake of interest in it.

Photostories would be difficult because they can only be *so* graphic.
If drug use isn't graphic, the people who'd be interested flock away. They're going to get their kicks on it from something outrageous. And, as bad as it is in reality, maybe exacerbated.
If given limitations for the brutality that can be expressed, and here, you must be. Then, the whole bit would probably be a waste of time.

It's only going to "bother" if it's shown in some angel-light. It depends on what the point of the character's addiction is, really. If it's just added drama, drug-use and sexual-abuse seem to be favorites that serve this purpose...I'm not a fan. If the trait is a "text-book" example, or otherwise just empty in it's meaning, there for shock alone... I'd rather not have to know another slab of it exists.
Given freedom with the subject though, it could come out really catching.

On this friendly forum, probably would be a bad idea. It'd be too cleaned-up, and look like a half-hearted attempt to give the doll some humanity.

    9. I would like it actually. Life is conflict and art imitates life. When there is not conflict in a story I am less interested. If the title is like "a perfect day with my perfect girl" I am less likely to click on it. If the title is "why do you hate me?" you bet I will clicky click.

Drug abuse creates conflict within a character and the characters surrounding him/her. To me that = interesting.

But in the end it is all about execution. If the person tells a deep story I would like it. If they were just trying to shock me well...that is cheesy.

    10. i'm slowly realizing that nothing is too "gritty" for this hobby, since the dolls are as wide spread and have the same traits has humans, therefore some things that people do, our dolls will do too.

    11. I don't see why it shouldn't be done if a person wants, even if I didn't want to read it myself. If it's part of the story, the character then I don't really see where the issue is. Unless of course its being posted somewhere with the intention of trying to get people into such habits, then I'd have an issue. Real life is full of dark things, stories and art shouldn't have to be exceptioned from this point imo. I could have a character and thus doll who drinks heavily or does drugs, in fact I do. And this doesn't necessariy reflect my own values either.

    12. I have already come across photostories on DoA that I considered offensive and/or vulgar. I've not seen any about drug addiction and I would have to say it depends on how graphic/detailed the story is.
Actually because I find DoA's Photostory board to be mostly either offensive or just plain cheesy I do not spend much time in that portion of the forum.

However, part of the reason people have these dolls is for their creative outlets! Many areas of my own real life are portrayed by my dolls characters and lives. So in this sense I have to lean towards a more open mind when viewing the stories of others. In most cases when someone dislikes something it is because they don't understand it or relate to it OR they do and it just hurts them in some way or other to see it acted out by another's fantasy world. This has also been the case for me, which is why I tend not to comment on photostories that rub me the wrong way.

Regarding the actual topic of drug use/abuse; I'd have to say again that it would depend on how graphic the story was and whether it is passing a line in my own view. Things like that can be implemented or expressed without exaggeration.

    13. I'd skip it, its overdone and unrealistic to the point its cheesy) (not that I would want to see it realistic either. I knew people who did drugs, they often end up doing something stupid and or killing themselves, why would I want to see the dolls do that? (well at least dolls dont soil themselves or die drown in their own puke but seriously waste of time)

    14. I think what bothers me is when the prop used for the photostory is the actual drug, be it marijuana or whatever.
That gets under my skin a lot because, well, i hate druggies, and i hate to think that i have hobbies in common with them. (yay for recovery making me a stereotypical all-drug hating preachy chick)

Fake ones? not at all. in fiction, the exploration of a story with that as a character flaw is interesting, because it explores a darker tendency of human nature. I intend on getting my girl a hookah when i save up money, because her character (being a regenerist) does dangerous things knowing they can't hurt her. It's just fiction, anyways.

    15. I'm 100% unswervingly against drugs. Period. Due to things that have happened in my life with them as the cause (just like to take the time to say I'VE never taken drugs) I really can't stand them. BUT I'm one of those slightly odd people that find anything dark and sinister incredibly intriguing. I like complex characters and storylines so I'm probably more likely to read a story about a drug addict than to read one about... I don't know... nice things. But, since it is the complexity I'm attracted to it would have to be interesting and well thought out. If it was a story casting drugs in a positive light, like... as a way of socialising, then I'd stop reading. I suppose it depends whether they're for or against drugs.

    16. I, personally, like it when people do off the beaten track things with their dolls, especially things that are gritty or perverse. I just think it's interesting when handled correctly. This isn't to say I fully condone all of it, but.. yeah.

I'm very open minded, and the "lifestyles" my dolls lead are more or less apropos. They're not all transexual speedfreaks (that's just Layla), but there's certainly room for that. However, I recognize that not everyone is interested in such things, so I don't go in depth about all the sundries of my doll's lives here on DoA.

Also, photostories aren't really my thing. I've only ever seen a few that caught my eye, and I've never made one.

But, er, yeah. I think what people have their dolls doing on weekends is their business, and as long as they post a disclaimer and follow the rules it shouldn't matter.

    17. You know I dont think it would bother me at all. Because since it is fiction.

    18. Storywise, It's nice to see a character with an addiction. I tend to feel more connected to the character in a term where he have to deal with it, or struggle to fight against it.

But I just don't like it when you use the fiction to transmit ideas of 'hey, drugs are nice and cool'.
Even tough nowadays young people are well informed about those things, it's not the kind of idea that you would like to transmit often...

    19. I think its a very ambiguous idea but many good stories were made up with characters with different obsessions and addictions such as drugs, i dont think its a "bad" idea... I mean i dont think the author is trying to encourage drugs or anything o.O?

    20. I guess it's not just about if the author wants to encourage the use of drugs (sometimes...well, yes), but if u don't write it properly, even if the writer don't have the intention, it may sound like that.
Like most people use to say: It's not about 'what' you say it, it's about 'how' you say it.

I had friends that used drugs, and some of them were trying to get clean (and today they are fine, Thank God), while others saw it as a ritual, or something that they say they 'could stop whenever they want'.

If someone write a story following this second line of thought, I would only keep reading it if the writer pass the idea that this character is going to have a lot of trouble because of that XD Otherwise, for me, it's just 'use drugs' advertisement or just someone that don't know much about the subject.

edt: and yeah, of course that someone that use drugs probably don't have a doll XD I think that at some point, the person would have sold the doll to get more drugs or something like that ... :P
And for other people, dolls are already their drug anyway XD
