Portraying Dollie Drug Use?

Jan 15, 2008

    1. Oh no, I wouldn't mind at all. I think my doll may have bigger problems than drug problems... and I actually have some caricatures (that I plan on getting dolls for) that use drugs and yes, one is an addict. I also don't have as much as a problem with drug use in general, considering I don't see them as taboo. Real addicts need help, of coarse, but your little dolly can do what they please... as long as no living people are harmed during there extracurricular activities. :)

    2. Just to point out: dollies can be financially damaging, too :P hahaa but it's not so bad as druggies and stuff.
Now, to the point: THEY BE DOLLS. As long as the dolls aren't do drugs just for the sake of doing the drugs ( just to be like, look! my dollie's doing DRUGGSS!!) then I think it's fine.

    3. Nope. Wouldn't bother me at all. Drug use is a real and serious issue. Making a character or characters with drug addictions adds an interesting twist to story lines and, to me, adds a welcome creative challenge. So long as one does not treat the concept as a joke (cause it's not) and the portrayals are accurate, it's fine with me.

    4. I think it's good to explore these ideas. Censorship does nobody any good at all. Even photostories that emphasize the good side of hard drug use are fine with me. After all, it's your own fault if you let something like that influence you into developing a drug problem. D:
I think being exposed to all ideas and having discussions and debates makes us stronger. And dolls are just another medium through which these ideas can be portrayed. People have doll characters that are death gods, assassins and Nazis and nobody seems to care much... why would drug use be an inappropriate topic for the BJD world?

    5. I'm not against it at all. Stories are stories. No, matter how bad they are. You see it in the movies all the time. I don't see as anything different. It all depends on the person whether they like it or not. I don't have a problem, but I know what I like, and I don't like so that would be a factor in determining whether I would watch/read the photo-story. I've seen so many dolls that are pictured smoking, drinking, being naked, gory looking dolls, and dolls with weapons. That's creativity for you.

    6. Well, I'm straightedge to the non-drug-related death. Buuut, like many others here, I don't have any moral objections to dolls doing drugs, as long as it isn't "Oh, drugs are great kiddies, you should do them!". I've seen what alcohol can do to people, I've seen people so psychologically dependent on pot that their whole lives revolve around when they can get there next joint (and this is a substance that isn't physically addictive, I can't even imagine what one that was could do). But then again, there's also a difference between an addict and a user- still, I think the fact that the line is a fine one should be addressed. Basically, if you're being that painfully realistic, you have to be realistic.

    7. I'new to BJD's (but not to doll collecting per se...).
I would never ever tell anyone else what is right- or wrong for them, but personally I wold never portray a doll as a drug user. I think, because, I'm an older (46) collector. I have seen too many deaths (among people that I knew when we were kids) due to heroin overdoses, and lives destroyed by drugs.

My dolls for me are my fantasies, my dreamworld, if you like, where there are no place for drugs. Too much bad things in the world around us makes me yearn for a different world, and when that's not happening; well...I create my own :aheartbea:aheartbea:aheartbea

    8. I doubt that I would find a dolly photo essay on drug addiction to be the best one evah, because frankly the subject is just a tad more grim and depressing than even a BJD can realistically portray (i.e., it's more likely to get a snicker than a sniffle out of me). But hey, it's no more offensive than a novel, film, or any other form of storytelling.

    9. Being a big fan of extreme gore mods and doll violence, I'm not sure I'm the best person to voice opinion. While I in no way, shape, or form approve or support drug use, a photoshoot or photostory of portraying a doll using drugs would certainly be interesting. I've had some characters addicted in their pasts, and they've had trouble even in the present to maintain sobriety. For me, it shows a new level in the character itself to show them not at their best. I mean, I may not like it as much as I'd like a photostory that makes me laugh, but that's not to say it doesn't have any interest for me.

As for being too gritty for the BJD world... if there is a line there, I've already crossed it.

    10. i wouldn´t be offended at all.. but would i read a doll photostory about drugs ? No.
Just because i´m not interested in .. i would rather read one about cakes :drool No, seriously, if there were a story i DO like it wouldn´t matter if the doll in it would be addicted or not ._."

    11. I personally don't care. It wouldn't be my choice but it's not my doll so who cares?

    12. Controversial Doll has a section specifically for this kind of story, so no, I don't think it would be an issue.

And if it is in character then it's your story.

      Phil.

    13. I'd actually be really interested. Characters that use drugs/have an addiction are fair game so I don't see why it shouldn't be extended to the dolly world.

    14. Does Absinthe count? I love the idea of a photo story around turn of the century New Orleans, artists colony, bordello, etc...

    15. I think drugs are just one aspect of larger problems in our society. I would be kinda disgusted rather than offended at someone using their doll to glorify and promote drug use, I have to admit. I wouldn't get on my high-horse, I would just never have dealings with the person who wrote/photographed it :XD: But if they wanted to use it as part of a story that explored the darker side of humanity, consequences of addiction, redemption, and such, and it was handled in a mature way, then I would be interested rather than affronted.

    16. Track marks on resin......

If it's done tastefully (Yeah) and doesn't glorify substance abuse (coupled with good photography and writing), I'll eat it up. I also don't mind bleak endings... >>

    17. To me anything works as long as it remains fictional. Personally, I wouldn't want to portray my dolls abusing drugs simply because I would find a realistic portrayal physically unattractive.

But, I wouldn't mind seeing other people's dolls as such if there's a story related or if it's artistic.

    18. well I guess it adds an element of realism to the story
not all are happy stories so some want to convey that in stories
I know none of the stories I write are happy, cept Clover's cause, well she's a faerie and...I've never seen a depressed faerie

    19. i wouldn't mind at all, if it was done in good taste and with a certain amount of discretion.
showing a doll smoking or drinking is actually pretty normal in my opinion, since so many people do it in real life as well.
and made up drugs? fine with me. especially if it contributes to the story in some way (like Togainu no Chi)

    20. In reality I don't condone drug use, but if someone wants to create a character that is a drug user, I would be fine with it. That is life sometimes, and if that is the character that someone wants to make their doll, I don't mind it. I don't know if I would be interested in the story, it really would depend on the main theme/plotline. I think a simple disclaimer/warning of course would be perfectly fine and then if someone chooses to read/look on, then that is their choice.
Personally I do think there is a big difference between an alcoholic character and a drug user. It's simply a matter of legal substance versus illegal substance. I also think that there is a difference in a made up drug, and an actual drug. I know many books and stories I read or have watched have made-up drugs. To me that's fine as well.
