Portraying Dollie Drug Use?

Jan 15, 2008

    1. I'd find the doll in question more human, really.. It's a human flaw and it somehow meddles with the nature of being perfect, that a doll normally is supposed to be.

Normally i hate drug users. Not because they're lesser beings, but because i've grown up in an area where this kind of self-abuse was every day acticities.

    2. I don't think I like the idea of it... might be slightly offended. I'd be curious to see what someone did with a photo-story about that, though.

    3. I do not think it is good idea to add addictions into the bjd world. There is enough of that going on in the real world and lives are destroyed because of it. A cigarette or a bit of alcohol isn't going to bother me though.

    4. I'd assume it was part of the character the owner decided for the doll, so I guess it wouldn't bug me unless it was done in a super offensive manner.

    5. I hadn't thought about this I suppose; for the most part my crew consists of fantasy dolls that are perfect beings so to speak. I don't care what others do with their dolls but it's not something that I would have my own dolls portray.

    6. I wouldn't be offended but then again, I have a doll who's character has an addiction (heroin) I mean, I haven't done the scars on his arm yet (I haven't even be able to do his face-up yet, he's really new xD) but they will come.

I don't understand why it would be a problem. People have different ways of expressing themselves and what you do with your dolls shouldn't matter to others. I think that as long as you indicate that it would be about drug use then people that would rather avoid that kind of thing don't have to click on it and look. Other than that : go ahead and have fun with your dolls!

    7. It doesn't bother me to be honest but it depends on the drug? Some things I would rather not read about but if that becomes the case I kind of just don't pay attention to it and move on to something else..

    8. It really depends for me on what it is and how being depicted. I don't want to see anything too gore-y and I don't want to watch a character being abused just for the hell of it (abuse can be used in stories, but some people confuse torture porn for good writing).

    9. Then I guess you ARE ok w/dollie drug use....

    10. @Teleri Exactly! People forget the millions lives that have been destroyed by cigarettes and booze. Not to mention, credit cards, capitalism in general, automobiles, firearms, tree branches and pretty much anything else humans can lay their hands on.

I have a doll who's drug of choice is heroin and she has the track marks to prove it. Though she's past the self-destructive phase so not really currently imbibing. Well much. Never say never they say. I pretty much think that dolls are best as a instrument of creative endeavor and as such can portray everything from fantasy perfect to gritty realism. Different strokes for different folks.

Personally I skip over photo-stories that are cutesy. Can't stomach that stuff. But sex, drugs, alcohol, violence, humor....that's where the action is. Otherwise it reminds me of the defanged version of Itchy and Scratchy:

It's too bad Controversial Doll went the way of the dodo. It would be nice if there really were an 18+ alternative forum for creativity that spanned a broader range of expression. Or if DoA had an 18+ sub-forum.

    11. I most certainly am NOT, don't try to put words in my mouth. I've seen what drugs do to people and I'll not be accused of supporting them! I just stated (4 years ago btw) that I'm not going to freak out on someone of they put a cigarette or a bottle of alcohol in their dolls hand.

    12. It doesn't bother me at all--one of my dolls is based off a character who sold drugs, and uses. But when i told my roommate I wanted to make him tiny drug paraphernalia she later told me that felt really unsettling and "too real" for her, and that she didn't want to hear about it... :/

    13. dr_jekyll1372, you say you are against depicting dollie drug use but then say you don't mind seeing one imbibing just about THE most dangerous one & smoking another terribly destructive substance - ergo I called you out. Alcohol IS a drug, THE gateway drug, TERRIBLY dangerous & addictive. Cigarettes are about the most costly addiction for lots of reasons, and cause tons of health problems. Just because they are legal hardly negates this.
Now those who don't want to see dolls portraying any ILLEGAL activities, that's another story.
Anyway, I personally don't care what others do with their dolls - I prefer stories that portray reality without making it dark and dismal tho.

    14. I don't mind it at all, I tend to shell my ocs and I like my characters to be more realistic, some of them are into drugs, alcohol and other illegal, lightly taboo things, so seeing how others do it makes me a bit glad I'm not alone.
I think it adds depth to the doll/character, brings an air of realism to them. But, that's just me, I guess.

    15. Excuse you but this is not a thread about attacking my personal opinions, this is about portraying drugs in the dolly universe. How about you get back on topic and and actually add something to this thread.
Fyi, I don't use tobacco of any kind nor do I drink. Spread your message to someone in need. I'm sure all the people that take the occasional drink will be thrilled to hear your condemnations.

    16. I dislike the idea that the dollie world should be totally devoid of addictions and other problems on the basis that the world is "bad enough as it is". Plenty of people use creative hobbies, including BJDs, as a manner of exploration and understanding, and some even for working through their own problems. One of my biggest fears in entering the community of BJDs (not in collecting them) was that the society would be too "purist" and insist on a utopic worldview that would not mesh with how I approach my dolls. They may be made of (nearly) flawless resin, but my dolls are meant to reflect the souls of characters who have very real problems and troubles.

Of course, although I know they can't be posted here, if people DID depict drug use on an 18+ BJD website I think everyone would appreciate warnings or tags, just like most of us would for any sort of adult material.

    17. I've heard of people using their dolls to overcome their addictions by portraying the dolls as their drug induced selves. I'd have no problem with seeing that since I know it's helping someone.

    18. One person's destroyer can be another person's reliever, particularly with respect to the mainstream-accepted options, and people bring their own personal experience to discussions. This informational thread is about the depictions involving our dolls in their created universes; nobody needs to be called out on the accuracy or correctness of their personal opinions or perceptions.

    19. In my dolls' story, things happen. It's not utopic, they're not perfect, and some of them have turned to substances. Di/Rina, whichever name she's into, is a formerly nonhuman entity who recently wound up human. Human emotion, to her is cruel and unusual punishment (after literal aeons of not experiencing it) and she's turned to abusing prescriptions to all but eliminate it so she can feel like she used to. A large part of her storyline centres on this, and on midnight trying to help. As for portrayal in the hobby, well, I'd be a hypocrite to criticize, but I do prefer it when drug use is portrayed accurately, and not glamorized because I do know people who've had substance issues.

    20. The problem in KNOWING that someone is using their dolls to overcome addiction and making THAT okay is that it requires the person with the addiction to self-disclose and out themselves, which may not be actually useful to their recovery. The motivation of "I want to share this because honesty is important" versus "I need to share this otherwise people won't think it's okay" might make the use of dollies as a tool a bigger burden.

And as far as glorifying drug use... again, I think it depends on the character. I'm going to glorify Soren's acid trip if a euphoric experience is better than his stress and problems. But the next one might terrify and scare him. But that has everything to do with his experiences as a character, not my feelings about drugs. Many of us have dollies that reflect us perfectly--our morals, our preferences, our fashion... They're companions of similarities. Others have ones who are different from us, including how THEY view drugs and substance abuse.

._. But again, warnings are key here. If someone is going to post drug-related content, the most polite thing to do would be have amble warnings and a cut.
