1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Portraying Dollie Drug Use?

Jan 15, 2008

    1. Doesn't bother or offend me at all. If anything, I think it would be interesting to see. I mean, drug use isn't all that gritty, in my opinion. The world around it, maybe, but just the using, nahh. I think, if anything, it would give the dolls character a degree of realism that you can't have without flaws.

As someone else stated, the only thing I would find even slightly bothersome is if someone inaccurately represented drug use. And unfortunately, that is a world you need to have been in to know well enough to be creating realistic stories on.

As for a made up drug, that's even better. You can't mess up what you've made up.

    2. There are lots of children in the forum, and I find it inappropriate for a child (under 18) to see a doll using drugs. I am fully aware that they (children) see it elsewhere, but I would prefer that they did not see it here in the forum. We adults should try to make photo stories that depict redeeming qualities in humanity, as opposed to self-destructive behaviors such as drug usage.

    3. I can understand not having such things as drug abuse shown graphically here on the forum

but in general I disagree, I don't see it as my role to teach about or deptic to the youngsters redeeming human qualities through my stories, they have their parents (who should censor their childrens net ussage IMHO) and Disney to do that.

people are flawed and my characters are flawed thats what makes them (to me at any rate) intresting and "real"

    4. I don't find myself approving of it...

It would offend me a lot; someone very close to me died from doing drugs, and it's nothing to praise or make entertaining.

    5. But what if the photostory in which the doll was using or referancing drugs was doing so in order to prove the point of its dangers and the damaging effects it can have on people and those who know them? A photo of a doll using drugs doesn't have to be showing usage in a positive light or making a joke of it since I'm pretty sure most people here are mature enough to realize that drugs are no laughing matter.

    6. ...Maybe... ...but it just makes me so so sad. : (

    7. I don't want to see doll photos depicting drug or alcohol addiction. If I see one by mistake, I'll close it and move on. I would avoid the author's photos in the future. If anyone friended on my LJ frequently posted those sorts of pictures, I would defriend them.

Accurate portrayal does not matter. The moral of the story does not matter. I don't want to see it, period.

    8. The many debate threads about content have nothing to do with allowing or not allowing things on DoA--the mods make those decisions (which wouldn't leave much to debate about if we only stuck with what's allowed here ;)). They are about content in general--not this forum specifically.

As adults we should make photostories that allows us to express and explore what we want to express and explore whether it be positive, negative, or inbetween. Not all stories are geared towards children--and this goes for art, literature, movies, music, as well as doll related things. Adults need to be able to create for an adult audience too if they so choose. Of course people should abide by the rules of where ever they are posting and should label photostories/shoots appropriately so people can avoid them if they choose to.

There are many things that children should not see, but that doesn't mean everything created must be rated PG. Some of the movies I like happen to be "R" rated, and some of the music I listen to contains profanity. Some of the books I've read contain subject matter not suitable for kids, why should photostories be any different? Is everything you read/watch/listen to always kid friendly?

    9. This isn't directed at the person who posted the comment but for all comments that are like this:

      1. It's not our fault if a kid sees something bad on the internet.

      2. Some people do not think that "humanity" has any "redeeming qualities" to it. And the fact is that imperfection with in a human could be the one thing that they find that shows humanity.

Each person chooses what to see and what they believe, as long as their sticking to the rules of the forum that's all fine and dandy. But I don't believe I should "self censor" myself just because "impressionable young minds" might be here.

    10. I have a hard time imagining a way of bringing drug use into a photo story without being tacky.

And if you're going to use it, you might want to think about slapping a warning in your title or it really is your fault if people stumble onto something they don't want to see. Either let them know ahead of time what they're looking at or you're not giving them a choice.

    11. 1. I disagree that humanity doesn't have any redeeming qualities. Just the thought of that is quite depressing. People do have redeeming qualities! So do my dolls.
      2. I don't want to see drug use here. I don't want any kids searching for pictures of their dream doll mold to run into self-destructive behavior. If I see it I would close and I would be upset.
      3. The forum is for everybody, children included, thus we should try to post pictures that would be suited for people of all ages and backgrounds.
      4. Nobody is asking you to Self-Censor. If you need to show your "art" to someone else, do so through a different venue.
      5. If a child see drug use that you posted then it is your fault.

    12. I may not be the first to say it but, children are exposed to drugs, violence and sex every day. It's in shows teens love to watch. Dr. Who, Heroes, and dare I say it? Gossip Girl (God I HATE that show!).
Many kids, teens on the DoA are probaly into fanfiction, RPGing, ect. And in these mediums there are sometimes scary, strange things. Bondage, feitishes and yes, drugs. The fact is, many kids know about drugs, they my even have freinds who use, or mabnye they are a user themselves. As long as there are D.A.R.E. classes which show the negative side of drugs, I reallly don't think seeiing a El snorting or Hound shooting up will really hurt anyone. THEY ARE JUST DOLLS!

    13. How would you feel if you saw a photo story of a doll who had some kind of drug addiction? Would you read it, or skip over it and move on, or even be offended?
I would find the subject matter a bit interesting, but I could understand why people would be offended. Personally, I would read it unless it turns out to be stupid.

Would it make a difference if the character in question was addicted to alcohol or if they were addicted to heroin? How about a made-up drug?
      N o t really.

Is drug use/addiction too "gritty" for the BJD world?
Dolls will be dolls, as people will be people. Nothing really maters in the end.

    14. I tend to think of this in the same terms I do fan fiction; if there's something that could be construed as technically offensive (whether it's sex, violence, language, drug abuse, etc, etc.) a little warning? Goes a long way. It takes maybe five minutes to write up something that says "Hey, this post contains drug abuse and if that offends you, please don't read/view any further." If you choose to take a peek after that and /are/ offended then that's your own issue. At least the warning is there; the responsibility then lies in the hands of the viewer.

If you don't warn for that and someone stumbles onto it? Then yeah, you can be blamed for that. Because people do tend to read warning labels; I know plenty of people in fandom who avoid 'death fics' and tend to get really annoyed when they start reading something that's not properly labeled and rightly so. One sentence giving the viewer/reader an idea of what they're looking at? Isn't really going to kill anyone. People who want to see it, are going to look regardless of the warning.

    15. Again, not about DoA--this is about dollie drug use on the internet in general--something that is very different.

If someone posts drug use on DoA, then it would be deleted by a mod anyway and the poster would be at fault. In the larger world of the web that is not all geared to be child friendly, it depends on each individual forum and some of the responsibility also rests on the parents. While there are young people involved in the hobby (and I do think that this hobby has some really nice things for youngsters), it's more of an adult hobby and not intended for kids. Therefore, if you spend enough time in the hobby you will (somewhere, sometime) come across content that is intended for an older audience. As long as the artists are abiding by forum rules and labeling stuff then they are fullfilling their part of being responsible.

    16. well, it wouldn't bother me one bit, after all, it how the character are creat, i men irl 99.99 of the world use drugs, 100% for sure in stars, lordy. But yea. stopping now before i ratter on

    17. ...I think 99.99 is a vast overexaggeration... But I see your point, it's almost seemingly accepted into society now, which is a real pity.

    18. indeed, sad tale, but yea 99.99 is a bit much, but i'm sure the number is close.:|

    19. I didn't say that this was my opinion, I'm just saying for the sake of looking at it from another point of view. So please don't take it as my opinion. And the fact is that in my comment I said as long as people aren't breaking the rules I don't care.

    20. I thought that this was an predominately adult hobby too. At least that is what I get from everyone I've talked to (most people I have talked to are Japanese people who are into the hobby over there). I too thought that this was a debate about it in general not over on DOA since we know that they do have policies and everything to keep people "safe".
