Preferring one gender of doll over another

Dec 9, 2012

    1. I mainly collect boys because I have more boy characters who I want to dollify and I think sewing for boys is easier than sewing for girls since my favorite thing to do with my dolls is sew for them. I basically find dresses and accommodating breasts incomprehensible...

Well, I called my Soom Sov genderless. My only female doll right now is my Zaoll Luv and my next dolls (or at least the ones I am considering) are going to be male. I'm rather fond of her, but I don't feel like I need more girls.

    2. I am COMPLETELY opposite form the post above, LOL.
I lovelovelove girl dolls, because I think the fashion expressible has a greater gamut.

    3. Just like in real life, I find boys/mens clothing so very boring. I prefer to have girl dolls and make them pretty! :D But then I'm also a hair stylist, so it's just in my blood.

    4. I definitely prefer boys over girls. I have four boys now and no real plans to get a girl. I think I would like one....but I haven't found one I really love. I think if I did get one, I would probably only have one. There are always new boy dollies I'm falling in love with! When given the choice between a girl and a boy, I think I would always take a new boy. ^^

    5. I prefer girl dolls, but I think (for now at least) it's because I really have a thing for tinies. I think a lot of the boy wigs don't look right, and the boys kinda look like girls anyway. Plus I have a hard time deciding what clothes I'd get for a boy! For the larger dolls I've looked at, either they're too manly or too girly for my tastes. lol So I guess I'm just picky with boys. I'm sure I'll have some eventually though!

    6. I think I definitely prefer boys. I do have one girl doll and while she is beautiful, I give more attention to my floating head then I give to her. It's not that I don't want her, don't get me wrong, I could never get rid of her, but I prefer the look of most male dolls and I find it easier to bond with them. That's all.

    7. Definitely prefer girls. I only own girls and don't really see myself owning a boy. I don't know why. I guess I just love girly wigs and dresses too much.

    8. In my crew there are 6 girls, three boy and one incoming boy.
But I do feel I prefer girl dolls.
I'm a feminist, and as a result of that I love working with female characters. I enjoy trying to break stereotypes, make diversity in my crew and making stong personalities.
Being a feminist does not mean I think less of boys dolls or men in general. It's just so much easier to find good male characters in media comparing to female.

    9. I prefer girls over boys. The sort of female facial aesthetic I like in real life is usually translated well in doll form, especially in SD form. Unfortunately, in this hobby, those particular facial features are most often given to boys. I love a lot of SD sculpts but lose almost all interest immediately when i find that it's a on a boy body. I have a rigid idea of a masculine face that doesn't translate well in doll form.

Don't get me wrong. I have two girls and can't -wait- to get my two boys because they'll be so much easier for me to dress. I'm drawn more to men's fashion than women's. Sleek, stylish, and clean lines. Jeans, sneakers, plaid shirts, hoodies, etc. I have a tomboy who dresses like a boy but nothing fits her. My girly girl is actually the easiest one to find clothes for but the hardest for me to dress because I just don't have a working sense of women's fashion.

    10. girls only, male dolls just dont appeal to me, plus the clothes are pretty and more fun

    11. I think I prefer guy dolls, but girls are so cute and and fun. Still though, I find more guys I'd like to get than girls.

    12. I tend to go more for the guy dolls, myself, and it shows in my collection, heh. I only have one girl, and the rest are boys. I'm really particular about girl dolls, though, so that's probably why I only have the one so far. I would like to get more, however.

    13. I prefer girl dolls because I prefer girl clothing, shoes, and hairstyles/wig styles, and I like seeing them best on girl dolls. I'm not interested in owning a boy doll for that simple reason. n_n

    14. At the moment my wishlist is mostly female, but Soom's Labas is gorgeous. Partly I'm a girl, and girls can wear a much wider range of clothes. And my characters are going to be mostly spunky or prone to getting into mischief.

    15. Well. If we want to talk about all the dolls I've ever owned then it's something like 8 boys to 2 girls, heh. But I currently have one girl, and one genderless tiny who identifies with the male pronouns. Like Akatsuki, I'm a feminist and I've recently begun to REALLY enjoy working with female characters (until about a year ago, I predominantly had male characters and therefore male dolls). Specifically, I enjoy working with super girly-girl, unabashedly feminine characters who are still very strong and heroic; it's an interesting combination because it forces ME to untangle a whole bunch of my own preconceptions. So now I get to enjoy buying girly girls and dressing them in frou-frou girly clothes like frilly tank-tops, dresses and high-heeled pumps (none of which are things that I would ever wear (heels kill my feet, frilly clothes irritate my skin, and let's not even talk about dresses), so it's nice to be able to have a girl who can dress like this... I like cute clothes. Just not on me; I think I dress more mature, but it's probably all in my head).

I currently don't really have a preference for either gender. I think I want my next doll to be a big boyman, and the one after that either a boy or a woman. I'm not sure yet. I'd like to own a diverse group of dolls with different body builds, heights, genders, etc.

I definitely used to have a reeaaaallly strong bias for boy dolls in the past though. Not that I necessarily think it's a bad thing; male fashion is actually pretty nuanced when you get into it. But owning a girl is... fun. She feels more... lighthearted than the boy dolls (yeah, it's mostly the frills and the hair bows I think). And I still can't get over the fact that she has itty bitty bewbies. SO CUTE.

    16. I've no interest in owning a male doll for the foreseeable future, though some of the "male" heads in the BJD world are extremely feminine... and I would like to have some of those, but only to put on a female body ;)

It's actually rather disappointing that some of those heads do not come with the option of a female body. My want list would be larger. Oh well!

    17. I only have boys & I do not want any girl dolls. I'm more comfortable with the boys & all my characters I would like to do are male. I know some people think boys cloths are boring but they don't have to be. I dress my boys in everything from goth, fantasy, period dress & ornate kimono. Some of them cross dress as well.

    18. Hum... this is a difficult question. I am a fashion photographer and illustrator and I use my dolls constantly in my work - as drawing and photography models, to do test shots, try different stylings that I may use on human models, etc. So for me, I need to have both genders, but I actually like my boy dolls better to be honest. Maybe that's because I still didn't get my dream girl doll yet - Iplehouse Asa :)

    19. I always thought it would be harder to sew for boys,is one reason I don't have a male doll. Another reason I have just girl dolls is because I like to imagine a bit of myself in the doll. For instance I was never the girl who got to wear a fancy dress and be the belle of the ball, but my dolls can be like that.
There is a male doll I would really love to have though,so maybe someday I'll get one.

    20. To me, it depends on the sculpt. Of my three yosd dolls, one is female with the other two being male. I have tons of girly clothes for all three since they can all wear the same size clothing. I don't see a lot of boy clothes that I absolutely need to have, but girl clothing is a different story.
