Preferring one gender of doll over another

Dec 9, 2012

    1. I have seven boys and no girls yet. I also have three floating heads that I plan to be male and a fourth that I hope will become a girl but who knows. It's easier for me to pick out boys that I like than it is for girls. I think when it comes to a female sculpt, she has to have the right size chest (not too big and not completely flat), the eyes can't be too huge, the lips can't be too big, and she has to have somewhat masculine features but also be delicate looking at the same time. I'm very picky when it comes to girls which is the reason why I haven't gotten one yet.

    2. Well, I completely understand having a preference for one sex over the other. When I began collecting I had almost only boys, and like you said it was because I just gravitated toward them over girls. But then at some point my relationship with dolls flip-flopped and I began preferring to shop mostly for girls. I think I've managed to end up with a fairly balanced collection, but I'm still in the girl phase for now, where it's most of what I consider purchasing. I still love to look at boys, but I don't need any more. :XD:
I think it's best to follow your heart and you'll have what you love.

    3. I can definitely see how someone could be drawn to one gender or the other, but for me, I am so very picky with both sculpts. I have to like all aspects of the unpainted/clothed faces and bodies. If just one thing is off I won't really look at it anymore. Right now I only have an MSD female but I really want a male that is taller and a bit more mature looking and now I've fallen for Raccoon Doll's female sculpts as well! Seems like I will end up with more females than males after all.

    4. I prefer the aesthetics of girl dolls, their shapes, faces, I'm not all that picky when it comes to them.
However, right now my wishlist contains mostly male dolls as most of the characters I want to make into dolls are guys, I identify with them on a more emotional level. I find it a bit difficult to want a doll just because I love the sculpt.

    5. I definitely prefer male dolls, probably because I'm female in real life and whatever styling I would do on a female doll I could just do on myself XD

    6. My first BJD was a female and I love her Elfdol body, it's so curvy. But the next four dolls I purchased are males. I prefer the boys right now far more than the female sculpt but that will probably change again somewhere down the line.

    7. I have only ever owned one male doll, so besides that all of my collection currently consists of is girls. That's not to say that I don't like the male sculpts, quite the contrary actually, but I am just especially picky when it comes to choosing them.

    8. I have a few more female dolls than male. For me it's just if I like the sculpt or not, regardless of gender. Though I do lean towards female dolls as I want to dress them up in all the crazy froofy fashions I either don't like to wear myself (but like to look at) or can't afford to buy all the fabric if making in human size.

That and it's kinda hard finding a male face that's not all mopey or broody looking IMO. I prefer my dolls with more neutral expressions if they don't have a bit of a smile going on. Or bigger grins. I'm a sucker for mischievous grins on doll faces...

    9. I have more boys and I prefer them more because they call my attention more (to many mores~ lol). I had a lot of girl dolls in my childhood so when I discovered BJD boys I was mesmerized by them and girls didn't do anything for me

Also, I'm a male fashion lover so I like to dress my boys in many styles and fancy clothes. Many people say that boys don't have variety and that their wardrobe is boring, I beg to differ! probably those people don't have imagination because boys have a great variety of fashion styles and there are many different ways to make them look good. I just have so much fun with my male dolls, they are my little models.

Having said that, I do have 3 girls I adore and wouldn't change them for anything. However, when I look for dolls, I look only for male dolls and I love the way people style them.

    10. I have a strict "no boys" policy. This home is absolutely for wayward girls only. This extends past the BJD hobby and into my other off-topic doll collection. No Boys. Ever.

I've never quite understood the appeal of the male dolls. Sure, many of them are dreadfully handsome, but they don't seem to fit my personal idea of "doll." It is like someone else said above, my ideals of beauty of feminine.

    11. Yes, I've felt the same. Of 16 dolls only 4 are female. That's still a pretty large number for me since it took me years to bond with any girls. I think for me it's that too many female dolls look too young/childish and it's hard for me to find bodies I really like. It's easier to find male sculpts and bodies I love.

    12. When I first got into the hobby, I was only drawn to female dolls because they were prettier and I could think of more ways to customize them. But now I'm totally boy-obsessed because their sculpts are so sexy. :love

    13. My first BJD love was a boy and I got him! But now everyone else i want is a girl doll, and even my boy is a Luts pretty boy with feminine features, compared to companies like iplehouse. He's going to end up looking like quite the ladies man ;) one of my incoming girls is in fact his girlfriend :XD:

    14. I'm in "only boys team" ;) But I've one girl - Justine (Napidoll Chesi)

    15. When I was into SD's I only had boys, and after I started preferring MSD's I only have girls xD I do have a few boys planned, but they are low on the priority list.

    16. I reeeaally love boys, but I really don't want to have an unequal amount of boys or girls. All of my most favorite and most developed characters happen to be boys. But I at least have some love for girl dolls. I created over 26 characters (Many of which will become dolls) and there is an even number of girls and boys. But between the two, I definitely prefer boys. I guess it is in part because I do not wish to appear boy crazy that I also have girl dolls planned.

    17. All boys in my house (35 dolls) and I have no plans or desires for a girl doll. A large part of that is likely because all my dolls are characters from my novels. That's not to say there are no females in my stories, because there are. They're simply not the mains and don't spark my interest like the boys do. The other part of it may also be that I only had girl dolls as a child and I was less than thrilled with them and that could very well be helping to colour my current doll views.

    18. I have both in my collection, but the guys have ended up outnumbering the gals by a fair margin...
I blame that on two things.

      1) I've found that I'm much, much pickier when it comes to girl sculpts than I am with guys, and the slightest little thing that's off... Things that I could (and have-) forgiven in my guys... will cause me to completely toss out a prospective girl. I'm honestly not sure why that is, but at this point I've just had to accept it as truth. Maybe being a girl myself makes me more critical? I have no clue.

... and 2) With the exception of one might-as-well-have-been-an-accessory Ken and the Dakin Merlin I was given as a high school graduation gift by my fantasy-nerd/geek-sympathetic great aunt, *all* of the dolls I had as a child were girls. Not only my fashion dolls, but my fancy-dress china dolls and my rag dolls, too, as well as the babies I was given when I was very young. All female. Male dolls just never seemed to enter anyone's mind as a possibility... So, when I started collecting BJDs, the concept of having guys was really novel. They were something new. I'd grown up with girl dolls and now I wanted something different.

All that said, I am very fond of the girls I have now and I wouldn't want to limit myself to an all-one-gender crew... It's too much fun having both, even if the girls remain a minority.

    19. This is a girls-only home for now! I have two girls here and one more on the way, and the majority of my wish list is female (I don't bother including all of it on my DoA profile so I didn't even include any boys, haha). Out of roughly eleven dolls I'd like to have at some point if possible, only two are boys, and I think that's quite generous already. I doubt I'll get any more boys than that. I don't really see the appeal of male dolls much, but I absolutely love the girls. Maybe whenever I get one I'll like them a little more, but even so I have very few male characters I care about enough to shell.

    20. I have a fairly even split planned out but I find it easier to give up on a girl sculpt if a boy sculpt is limited in order to get him first then vice versa. My first and second were boys and I have 1 boy and 4 girls coming with 2-4 more planned this year and they could be boys, girls or a mix, not sure yet. But i'm hoping at least two are boys..so maybe I do lean a little to boys.
