Preferring one gender of doll over another

Dec 9, 2012

    1. This is definitely an interesting question! My doll collection at the moment is split evenly if I count a female doll that I have pre-ordered, but looking at my wishlist (and ignoring any doll who's character identifies as nonbinary) I have way more girls on it than boys. For the most part, any female dolls on the list are there because I really like their aesthetic so I end up creating a character around the doll, while any boy dolls on it are supposed to shell an OC I already have!

I think that I'm just not naturally inclined to purchase a boy doll unless I have a specific idea for them in mind, and even then there are a handful of them who's sculpts are actually intended for females. :sweat Girl dolls (or characters who dress femininely/have soft features) are just so much more fun to me!

    2. I literally only have boys. There are loads of delightful girl dolls out there, and I love them too, but I can never picture owning them or sorting out their aesthetics like I do my boys. And, like, for me, the "gender" of a doll is, much as with people, a very unfixed, ephemeral thing, so my umbrella term of "boy dolls" encompasses those with sold-as "female" face or body sculpts. Just, when I have them, they're boys.

    3. Well, I don't own any doll yet, but I discovered that I prefer boy dolls, and that I have LOADS of male characters.

I would prefer having a crossdresser male than a girl. I suposse it is because I know how hard it is having "feminine" interests while being a boy, and I feel proud of my Original Characters. It's weird to explain.

I love some female sculpts, but usually, the boys are the ones that I love the most. If I like one sculpt and it has the option of choosing the doll's gender, I would purchase the male one.

I think I would only buy a female doll for some of my Original Characters, or for having a transgender FtM doll.

    4. I have ALWAYS loved male dolls, female dolls were just not for me. Just because of my characters, they are all male, and the females I create are far too " realistic" to be in doll form.

Although, that is what I thought it would be forever, I am now collecting dollfie dream dolls, and obviously they are all females and love them to the moon and back. They are my "personal maid-androids alike" and they fit the character so much.
Now that I am back to BJDยดs I am going back again into male dolls, I just love to see them as real people, and I feel I conect with them much better.

My problem is that I never find any clothes that fit my characters, always have to order ir as custom order, and it is so expensive T_T

    5. I love and always prefer girls because of the endless beautiful outfits and wig and shoes.......especially heels, I love heel legs T_T
But in real life my collections and wishlist actually split quite evenly.

To be honest, I find myself in a awkward position where I always tell my friend how much I loved the girls but then I can't find a sculpt to fell in love with and in the other hand, I fell in love with the boys so quickly that they are taking over my wishlist XD

    6. I'm a female dolls owner, and will probably always be.
Even if some male sculpts look appealing, there are always female ones that I find even more appealing. ^_^
(but I never say never... I did some compromises in that hobby so there may be one guy in my crew one day or other...)

    7. All of the dolls i've collected over the years, (be it BJD's or standard fashion dolls) are female. Male dolls just don't appeal to me. I remember having a Ken doll when I was a little girl and feeling really disatisfied. Male BJD's are of course much more detailed and anatomically correct but they still don't interest me. I enjoy looking at photographs of male BJD's owned by others but that's as far as it goes, I have no desire to actually own any.

    8. I currently have more girls that boys, and when I started out I had 2 of each. I've just gravitated more towards the girls recently because it's just so much easier to find clothes that I like for them. All the stuff for boys is either way out of my price range, or would need to be commissioned. I still love my two (and a half lol) boys, but it's definitely the girls that get the attention :sweat

    9. I'm a boy addict. I usually don't even look at girls (though I do have one MSD girl)... but recently I saw some SD girls in person and I'll admit I've been a bit tempted since then. I'm beginning to keep an eye out for just the right girl to add some sassy motherly influence to my testosterone-filled doll family.

    10. Boys, definitely boys. Lovely androgynous beautiful boys. I always have preferred boy dolls to girls. I just understand and relate better to boys. I prefer boy's fashions to girl's fashions hands down.

Lol, as a kid I used to turn every flat chested girl doll I received into a boy. I'd shorten their hair, and dress them in the least femminine shirts and pants that I could find.

That said, over the years a few BJD girls have somehow managed to find their way in, they are still way out numbered by the boys of course. ^_~
Still, I'm always slightly bemused, when I think about just how many girls have successfully snuck into my "boys only" BJD horde. ;)

    11. Throughout my decades of doll collecting I have gotten mostly females and very few males. But I have found that I am getting more and more males now as some of the ones being done are so amazing, and my ladies need to be with their fellows. :)

    12. I prefer the boy dolls but always end up pairing them up with a partner. My daughter prefers the female dolls.

    13. i really only buy boys, i did want a minifee ante but i realized im really only interested in sd size dolls. maybe one day ill find a girl :)

    14. I usually prefer boy dolls just because I'm pretty picky about girl dolls and I haven't found the perfect one to buy yet aha !

    15. I have mostly boys and just one girl. Most of my characters are men and always have been. I'm not sure why, those are just the sort I enjoy writing.

    16. I tend toward male dolls more than female. I suppose it's partly because i've always gravitated more toward male characters but also because of the general lack of male dolls in general. It's better than it used to be, but certainly growing up I always resented there were no boy dolls beyond well.. Ken and Action Man. Yaaaaawn.
So when I got into dolls it was mostly male dolls, and they're still not so easy to find.

thankfully with BJDs, the options are waaaaay wider than playline and they aren't all pretty pretty heh. It delights me to see so many boys... of course, I then want to put all the girl heads on boy bodies too but... maybe i'm just weird haha.

Right now my collection of dolls in general has more girls but only because I collect playline too, and finding boy dolls in playline? hah. You get like 20 girls for every 1 boy, it's crazy. But i've only found one female bjd I actually LOVE thus far, and about 50 boy ones so... I think it fair to say i'll be evening up the ratio pretty quick

    17. I am the same way but with girls!! I just love long curly feminine wigs and clothing to choose for girls!!! Also, their curvy figure and pretty faces :)

    18. I feel the same way towards boys as towards girls. I do not think I have a preference for any gender in my doll crew. I first purchased a girl, then a boy, then a girl and the next one is going to be a boy so they are going to be even in genders.
I think girls are easier to find as there are a lot of beautiful sculpts and then dress and characterize, I guess there is a bigger market for them; while boys, specially mature minis (I do not own nor like anything bigger than MSDs) are hard to find. But that's one of the things that encouraged me to get my first boy, and I was luck to find exactly what he needed to be gorgeous.

    19. I currently have 3 boy dolls (and another boy on layaway). The only reason that I have only boys is because they were either on sale or a limited release. I do have some girls in mind that I would like to get, it just hasn't happened yet. I've bought all of the male sculpts that I really wanted, so my next endeavor is to start collecting the ladies.

    20. I love the boys! I'm not sure why, but they definitely appeal to me more than the girls!
