Preferring one gender of doll over another

Dec 9, 2012

    1. This is my problem too.

All my girls are late teens/early 20s so I have no trouble getting dolls to shell them. Boy sculpts generally never look that old. I have one young male character (16) and have ordered him, but all of my other male characters are in their 20s so generally sculpts don't suit.

If I want to shell a guy character in his 30s/40s? Forget about it. There's only so much you can do to a young face to age it without extensive modding, especially in male faces.

I have mostly girls, and do prefer girls, but if there were more mature male MSDs about I'd have more male BJDs than I currently do. Not as many boys as girls mind, but still more.

I find it easier to give girls more 3D characters, and I struggle to not give my male characters 2D personalities. Kind of like the opposite of most TV shows and films, really.

    2. I definitely prefer the girls, personally. For the most part, I don't even look at the boy dolls when I'm browsing. Well... except by accident. XD Man, if I had a dollar for every time my train of thought went "Oh wow! She's really pretty! Oh. He. He's really pretty." I'd have a lot more dolls LOL.

    3. I absolutely adore my boys. They're the ones I look at most. I just don't really have much of an appeal for the girls. But then, my grandmother and mother surrounded me with barbies when I was growing up, so having a nice-looking boy is a great change for me. Even if my boys like to play cross-dresser and wear skirts on occasion. >>;

    4. I prefer girl dolls for the same reason that I love to buy girly things for my daughter. I also think most male sculpts look like they could pass as girls if they just wore a dress. There's only one male sculpt that I want and that's because he actually looks like a man, but probably mostly because I have an awful crush on him, too. lol

    5. I'm evenly split. I want all the associated relationship possibilities that come with boys and girls in the same house! And when I think of period or "topical" clothing (eg. futuristic, Oriental), I want to have both male and female wardrobes.

So I do want males that look male and females that look female... kinda challenging to find boys that look like masculine youths but not grown-up men, but I've found a niche of sculpts that (like Goldilocks says) are "just right." ;)

    6. ehhh im not opposed to getting a female- its just i have more male characters anyways!

    7. I currently only have girls but I would love a boy dollie. Although whenever I get ready to buy a boy i get put off because I find girl dolls much more customisable with their night gowns and they have more hair and outfit options xD

    8. I've tried a few different boys, but I always end up finding a new home for them, bc I like the girl dolls, & all of their lovely outfits. I like the larger male dolls, bc they have the better clothes.. but I like the MSD size *_*

    9. I like boy dolls better, but I definitely plan to have a girl in the future. Mostly because I really love all the wigs and clothes out there for girl BJDs. You can find some really cute stuff for them. Although part of the reason I'm drawn more to boy dolls is because I prefer male characters.

    10. I like both equally. I've always had an even mixture. Although I always found it more difficult finding female sculpts I liked and often used boys heads. I use to find the girls head sculpts to be too stylised or unrealistic and doe eyed (for my taste). I like my female characters to be more mature and bordering on androgynous.

    11. I think I like girls so far more than male dolls. Mostly because I don't like the fact that you can almost (with exceptions in certain sculpts/face-ups etc...) take any male doll head and put it on a female body and it would look perfectly like it went together. Alot of the male dolls seem to have very feminine features and there tends to be a lack of facial hair etc making them more pre-pubescent boy or a very feminine looking male. The body's aren't usually my issue it tends to be the heads I think that put me off them more than anything. Although I do have to admit that I have bought a male and there are sculpts out there that aren't this way but more time than not I find them being too feminine... Course I tend to like my men with more facial hair and other realistic features/flaws....

    12. Well, I currently only have one doll- a girl. I guess I probably prefer female dolls but every time a see a boy doll with a fluffy/spiky wig and piercings I fall in love! So, I am definitely open to have a boy doll in the future as well. ;)

    13. I like both genders equally, but by some coincidence, I now have three guys + waiting for none, and four girls + waiting for six. Which leaves me with about three fourths of girls in the end :S
It wasn't intentional, but I buy the dolls I like the face of, and somehow, most of them has turned out to be girls, even though quite a couple of them are ridiculously androgynous and could just as well be boys.

    14. I have one boy doll that's stayed (well I have one OT anthro boy too but he's in his own category somehow), even when I've bought other boy dolls I thought I'd love, they just didn't do anything for me. I wanted to have an Unoa L-Bi for years, but even after I got one, he moved on, too. My Leeke Mihael is a total dreamboat though and I can't fathom not having him. Girls are just more my thing, I guess. That said, I love looking at photos of boys, I just don't like owning them.

    15. I have both but I LOVE my SD guy !!

    16. Most of the dollfies I look at are girls primarily because I have more girl character ideas than boys. However, I do like some guy sculpts, and would buy one if I could come up with a good character idea.

    17. Well I am the complete opposite!! I prefer girls a lot more and they are the ones who usually attract my attention when browsing~

Maybe it's becuz I think most boys available are a bit too feminine and are way too slim for my taste~ I think becuz most of the companies are from Japan & Korea, we all know the real pop idol in the entertainment industry looks, they are pretty boys lol, so I guess that's why;) I rmb some ppl in the AOD webpage asking if they offer a slimmer boy body, so I guess more Asians prefers it that way?

Moreover, most of my girls are between 55-58cm tall, but I didn't find many sculpts that appeals to me in that height range, I guess I have a much stricter in choosing the right boys than girls. And out of the 15 BJDs I have, I only have one 1/3 boy and one 1/4 boy, all the others BJDs are girls... Unlike me my sister who also collects BJDs prefer them equally though~

I much prefer more manly features, like more mature faces, broader shoulder, stronger arms and more muscles/ well built than showing ribs bones!! So I reli like the Iplehouse E.I.D. & S.I.D. boys ^_^ And I am in love wiv the S.I.D. Theo now haha:chibi (1/3 or up is my favourite BJD sizes:3)

My mum was like she thinks it is a bit "weird" to get a boy and I totally understand where she is coming from, cuz in other types of doll's collecting, girl dolls are much preferred!! I think it is only in the BJD world, that boys can be equally viewed with girls, or even become more popular and preferable in some BJD collectors!! I think this is an interesting phenomenon:)

    18. Mine seems to depend on size. I prefer my 1/6 to be girls, I don't know why...but 1/4 and larger I prefer them to be boys! I'm not really interested in girls larger than 1/6....of course now that I said that I'll probably fall in love with a 1/4 girl. XD.

    19. I prefer boys as I love babying my two boy kitties and I feel like I'd have to be less 'careful' with a boy doll. I have three girls right now, with another on the way. I'm very careful with my fragile little ladies! I'd like a 1/3 boy to carry around and whatnot. I'd be a lot more free with him, as he wouldn't have a dress/skirt, or crazy hair to mess up every time he moved. ... Been wanting a boy for about eight years now... Still don't have one.

    20. I'm a new collector...so I imagine over time what I'm drawn to will change. But so far I've been more drawn toward male dolls and love clothes from Sadol, Freedom Teller and the like. It's so much fun to dress a doll in a little suit with vest and tie...

To date all of the dolls I've purchased have been guys and I find myself just glossing over female dolls. Maybe it's because the majority of female dolls are all generally "pretty" but for me uninteresting. I find that it's more difficult to "hear their stories" when I see their sculpts.

Of course a lot of the boy dolls are also "flower boy" types but I would like to get a girl doll at some point. It's just taking longer to find.
