"PRETTY please?": the art of obtaining.

seeing as i have no way of making my own money (except the US$20 i make every 2 weeks for walking my dogs, and that only started happening recently, so if i tried to save up by myself, it would take me years and yeas x____x) of course i went straight to my mum and asked her.
these dolls are the most expensive thing i have ever asked for and i feel extremely guilty asking for one, but until i can find someway to get a job, i really have no choice.

i fell in love with them back in 2006 when i saw the original DIM marianne,
asked for her for christmas, did not get her,
then found more and more dolls i liked, asked for DOD pitts for christmas 2008,
still did not get her,
then i asked for DIM bellosse for my birthday this year and mum said yes
my mum is even starting to get into bjds, but she said we are getting my doll first before she dives in ;]

so all in all, i am happy i did not get all the previous dolls, because now i am getting a doll i really truly love and not one i just think i love because she looks cute.

Really, I found out about BJDs after reading Haute Doll (this was when I was still collecting Barbies and my local news stand stopped carrying Barbie Bazaar). I joined up here and then shopped around, amassing a list of all the pretty dolls I wanted... until I hit the DoD site and saw their U. I fell in love and a year later, he was mine, all mine..

 

Well.. When Volks put out their First line for Dolls back in 1999 ish I was already living on my own and supporting my son, My boyfriend and my self. I feel i love with them on first site. I was pretty heavy into the Anime scene hence seeing Volks come out. I have a large collection of Garage kits some made by Volks so I was familiar with the company. I thought they were the coolest things ever! Then the price tag hit...... yeah that was more then a months worth of rent... So I admired them from a far for years.

Many years later (2003) I met a new friend and showed them to her. She also fell in love. But because of the price tag never got around to buying one. We sort of lost touch for a few months and she pops up with a Lishe! I was like "OMG green with envy" ..I was making a better living by that time and saw that so many companys where making them now and some had much lower prices then Volks did. I feel in love with Soul Doll Asiter and Lupinus....I never did get my hands on a Lupinus but later in 2004 I did get an Asiter! I still have him to this day.

I was married back in October 2008 and now have taken over my husbands mind with BJDs as well. We are even working on our own Wed site (coming soon guys!! PM me if you want more info) And we have added quite a bit to our dollie family. We now ownDOD Elf Ducan Limited full set,

Its all good.. I do have to build a child proof case for them still sort of working on that LOL

Now I must tell you all that I started out with resinsoul doll not just because i thought it had a cute face btu because I knew my parents would go on a raging tyraid if they found out I wanted to spend 600 on a doll. Lucky me I got discounts etc on my first three dolls (er...4...but i sold him and he was free) in total I had spent 350 on the first three. Then my firned bought me a miho head whos faceup i got free and the body was the biggest thing I paid for (450 damn -.-) but when my momatron found out about that i think she had a cow because she wouldnt speak to me. I finally showed her Aliah and she said because she is so pretty she must have been worth it.....I totaled everything hwo much she is worth with everything she is wearing...like 800 bucks But she will never know....Also when buying the body

so for years i'd known of the existence of BJD. i thought it was a bizarre and creepy hobby that some lolita who got a little too into their style were picking up and obsessing over. years passed...i started wearing lolita more...and i made a friend through a loli meetup. she has several bjd, and her mom designs and sews clothes for them. i met her dolls one day...and that was it. i had to have one. ever since then, i've been trying to save for a dollzone cherry, a domadoll oukja, and a luts blanchet. i'm nowhere near being able to get them yet, but good god do i want them!! i haven't admitted to my mom that i like them(i don't live with my parents anymore), but considering it took me nearly a year of wearing loli before i told her about that......i won't be telling her anytime soon. oh yeah, and my boyfriend thinks they're scary. XD

I don't have to bug my parents since they live 2,500 miles away from me... and I'm married. My first doll my struggle was to decide which one I wanted. I didn't want to spend too much money since the main reason for getting a doll was to make doll clothes for them. Finally I settled on BBB Weylin. After that it was deciding that since I planned to have at least two conventions with artist alleys I should find some females to make pretty clothes for. They are a business investment... like buying display racks or product development. Slowly they will pay for themselves by modeling off the clothes I make. So it shouldn't really be an issue... It should eventually balance out when I sell off my inventory.

 

Ahaha awesome stories everyone. Mine was kinda easy.
2004: Showed mom the DOD site (first bjds I stumbled upon), we admired Si, saw the price, thought 300$ was a bit extreme for an MSD without clothes and hair, mom liked the idea though but we decided we wanted a big doll, went our way.
~3 years passed, I've been looking at other dolls, DoA, and getting information~
2007: I was studying abroad in Japan (my last 2 weeks), decided to go back on DOD too see what was new, because hey haven't been there for half a year, saw Ducan Homme version (I had already seen the elf version but the price was unbelievable for me, poor student so yeah), squealed and died a little, send my mom emails to France with all the pics, mom answered me squealing too, came back to France 2 weeks later (april 1st), talked about it with mom, april 4th we ordered the full set.

Mom has always liked bjds (she's a modelist/stylist so she sees them as a way of inspiration for clothes etc and she likes pretty things XD) and has always supported me in my choices. My dad just sighs and rolls his eyes but never says anything because it's my money after all and he knows how I love them. Now I think of gettin' mom her very own bjd to thank her for all the support she's been giving me with this hobby.

- clicks wildly into SOOM, LUTS, Peakwoods, BlueFairy, Volks, AngelRegion etc. etc. looking for the Perfect One (or Three)
- Stare! Gasp! Hyperventilate! How is it possible that such beautiful things exist on this dunghill of a planet? This is Perfect. I must have it. I MUST have it.
- Suddenly realises she actually has to *pay* for the thing. Takes a deep breath and scrolls back to the price tag.
- Tries very hard not to get a heart attack. Said heart decides to sink like a rock instead while brain registers.
- Closes window with a heavy heart.
- Proceeds to wallow in lust for about 6-8 months.
- Asks maternal parent for her advice. "Are you CRAZY? Of course not." "But mooooommmm... it's my own money.... besides, Nikki looks so lonely on his-" "Oh, fine. I don't care." VICTORY!!!
- Goes on website with trembling hands. Fills in every single detail needed.
- Dithers for a while with the cursor over "Confirm".
- Clicks button after a month. Two seconds of ecstasy.
- Huge wave of guilt... can't believe I actually blew $300 on that. What if I need the money for college?
- Totally forgets about the order after a week of misery. (Repression?)
- 3 months later- Postman: "Mornin' hun, I got yer parcel here." Me: "Parcel? What parcel?" (spots "LUTS" stamped across the reciept) Postman: "Everythin' awright hun?" Me: *nods speechlessly* *signs for parcel*
- Opens box. The universe makes sense again.

 

I think of mine as an almost perfect execution

I don't even remember where or when I saw my first doll. Like, I really have no idea how I discovered them. Anyway, so when I started browsing around and went to Angel of Dream, discovered Kyrie, told boyfriend, gave puppy dog eyes once, and got her for my birthday. Same thing with Ishtar.

..Dayum, it's been easy so far. I doubt the next one will be so easy.

 

saw gorgeous dolls in Japan. Mostly thought "Cool, but I can't pay the same for their clothes as I do for my own."
Years later, I saw more dolls at a con and I thought, "I could sew for dolls and sell it for beaucoup bucks." My ride down the slippery slope began.
Started looking at every company site I could find, lusting for dolls I couldn't in good conscience afford.
Started watching Ebay
Found Angel of Dream. Did research on the company. Finally prices I could seriously mention to my husband without getting laughed out of the room.
Started bidding on Wang Zi, figuring he was androgenous enough, I could crossdress him.
Kept getting sniped at the last second.
Bid on a Rao and won, miracle of miracles.
Idly put a bid on another WangZi. Fluke of the universe, I won.
They arrived about the same time, my Adam and Eve.

Two months later, still watching Ebay for shoes, eyes, & wigs when I see this poor little guy with a pissed off expression come up and I just had to try and rescue him. Amazingly, I won him, too.
Orientdoll Tae arrived and I figured out why he looked so pissed. He's a head shorter than my other 1/4's. aaaaaw.

A year later Resinsoul burst onto the scene & I fell hard for their 1/6 dolls Bei & Bao.

I didn't have any problems with parents, but I live with my boyfriend and we put our money in stash together, so I needed his approval.
This wasn't that hard. And I have a pretty nasty illness, so it basically was like...

*cough* Look, Isn't she pretty? No, no, I'm not going to buy her, that's too much, yeah... *continues looking at the pictures with a sad face* And I haven't been on a vacation for three years... And my head hurts... Oh, maybe I should buy an anime figure of Souseiseki? Or Pullip? Look, they don't cost that much! Er? Why, yes, I want a bjd, but that's okay, we have to eat something after all... Though I don't want to eat most of the time... *cough* Yes, yes, only 230$. Look at the other companies, here! This one is 700$. And that one is 1000$. Buy the way, here is a picture of her naked body. WHAT?! I CAN BUY HER?!?! YAY! ...And yes, you can buy your laser.

 

Aww I recently received my first doll and I was as nervous as you about it being damaged or so on. My doll was perfect when he came here, but he got stuck in customs for a bit and he has airbubbles on his lips, so it's been a little bit of a let down. :/ I'm gonna have to send back his head and get his lips redone, which will take another 2 weeks ;__;

Other than that, my struggle to get my doll was to work at a café for 2 months I actually got the job before I fell in love with my current doll. But since I had lots of money and nothing special to buy, I felt that I wanted one of those BJDs that I had seen 3 years ago And here I am!
And for choosing my doll, I just searched through lots of sites and totally FELL IN LOVE when I saw him. I still can't find a doll I love more than him

-Found Dream of Doll. "So pretty...ugh, want one! But they are so much money, I'll wait."
-Some years later, found Bluefairy. Fell in love with Jerome.
-"Mom, there's this doll I want...now, don't say anything, but it's 300 dolla-" "No."
-"What about for Christmas?? I've been good this year." "Maybe...probably not."
-Start saving up for Jerome.
-Spend all saved money on food and basic needs. =(
-Wait several more years...
-Registered for Den of Angels.
-Find Crobidoll. See Nia. LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT.

I think I'm in the category for perfect execution.

I saw my first BJD in person at an anime convention I was selling art at. I already had a full time job, but was still living at home. I did a couple months of research and looking around.

Me: "Hey, mom? Remember that doll at the convention?"
Mom: "Yeah, but they're really expensive aren't they?" There's no way you're getting one."
Me: "Just try and stop me."
Mom: "Oh... right. As long as it's your money, I don't care."

My mom is firm believer that money is earned to be spent on things that make life enjoyable.

So shortly after that, I ordered my first doll on a whim. I had been waffling around between a few different sculpts and options, and then Luts came out with a new head for the minifee options, and announced a Nanuri head event at the same time, so I took the plunge.

My package was marked down and not checked at custom. It arrived, after many days of anxious waiting in perfect condition.
