Me: Mommy mommy look how pretty!
Mom: Nu-uh not another one. You promised the last one would be the last one.
Me: I lied. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE it'll be a birthday present!
Mom: Sigh...I'll think about it.

Me: *has second BJD*

3rd Doll: Soom Chrom
Me: ZOMFG MOMMY LOOK HOW GORGEMOUS HE IS! I MUST HAVE HIM! I MUST MUST MUST! He'll be gone forever if I don't by him RIGHT NOW!
Mom: *sigh* Put him on layaway for Christmas...
Me: YAYYYYYY *hugs and jumps up and down in joyous joy time*

Of course there was some fighting in between but hey. You gotta hound after these things xD

 

My experience-

*Searches around DA, find gorgeous pics in a gallery
*Looks at many pics, mostly SD boys
*searches for animal dolls
*finds a pic of Pipos curo
*dies inside- asks owner if they made it XD
*Owner tells me it is a BJD
*musical research montage begins
*finds DOA, saves up for MSD girl and buys
*Orders Soom Glot
*Trades MSD for Pipos Dali (I knew I would get my bunny boy someday!)
*Begs (and succeeds) for CCC Ophelia Licorice
*Sells Glot when she arrives and buys Alice Cherry Blossom

Now I'm saving up for a ZuZu Delf Wolffy.

Basically, I have gone from a midsized human, and gone smaller and progressively more anthro-like. I guess it goes to show- you'll find out your doll habits over time!

 

So, my experience goes like this..
*Watched Lord of the Rings trilogy and I love Hugo Weaving so did search on eBay for Elrond stuff (I totally blame Hugo and Peter Jackson for my BJD addiction.. think I could get compensation from them for this? ) only to find an Elrond outfit for a doll being sold by Buff (blame her too, for my addiction).
*Jaw hits floor when I see her doll ("What the hell is that and how do I get me one?") and immediately do a search for "Super Dollfie" which in turn leads me to Volks.
*Poke about the Volks site wondering what's written there (no English site available at the time) and jaw hits floor again when I figure out the price.. dolls are hella expensive.
*Find DoA (on Yahoo Groups) and somehow find my way to Luts (only Korean site available) and discover (more like get punched in the gut and need to bring home) Art Delfs Vampire Shiwoo and Vampire Chiwoo.
*Lusts after them only to finally figure out there were only 5 of each made and they are no longer for sale.
*Cries and dies a little inside.
*Finds Shiwoo elf and realises there may still be some left (and decides to hell with the price, he's too pretty to pass up).
*Emails Liria to find out (only way to buy them was through a shopping service of some kind) and is told there are still a few left.
*Freaks out, does a happy dance, scrambles to find money, sends off bank transfer and orders Shiwoo elf (who is, by and large, exactly the same as the Vampire Shiwoo, just sans outfit/faceup). Does another happy dance.
*waits... patiently.
*And he arrives. Holy S--- he's awesome and amazing and adorable. He's still my favourite hands down.
*Show him to my mom (whom I hadn't told anything about him).
*She thinks he's cool and cute and "he's HOW much money?!" XD
*She also thinks I'm weird for getting into dolls at my age when I little to no interest in them as a kid. I am weird, what can I say?
*She also thinks I weirder for wanting a boy doll rather than a girl doll.
*She thinks I really need a girl doll.
*Meanwhile, I've purchased another boy, El elf, whom she doesn't know about.
*I decide I actually do like the MSD size after all (originally I only wanted the big dolls) and fall in love with the Blue Fairies, finally settling on a Xiao after seeing the boy pic of her. XD
*Mom still insists I need a girl doll so I jokingly suggest she get me a Blue Fairy Xiao for xmas if she really wants me to have a girl..
*She agrees! (I was going to buy her anyway but that was totally cool on my mom's part to offer to buy one for me)
*So doll #3 was my xmas gift.
*And it goes from there.. I've bought all the other dolls myself, basically from saving money from working.

And my list keeps growing.. they need to stop making so many pretty dolls. So many dolls, so little money, so little time.

My two so far were pretty simple....pretty much went:
-See dolls in korea.
-think...you know I've always wanted one of those....
-email mother while in hotel in korea with a 'saw these, can use remaining limit on visa for one, would be great for drawing!'
-received a yes thrugh email...
-didn't have time to get back to the dollmore store, so ordered online and flew home!
-Doll arrives two months later.


And my second doll, another fluke...after a couple months browsing many sites, deciding which ones I may want in the future, Putting together a list consisting of a what dolls I may possibly want in the future, then browsing the marketplace for lack of anything better to do......Plans were toask for a Lut's Rigel for Christmas. However, saw a Heliot for sale.thus
-this is what I'd like for christmas.
Mome -"you're kidding, right?"
-Nope? see...two heads, Hooves! limited....pretty.
Mom -How Much?
Pricing approved and this years only christmas present was purchased months in advance!

Step one: Randomly trawling teh interwebs, see dolls. See them more in magazines, on people's photosites, etc.
Step Two: Go omgwtfbbq, I love the Japanese. Realise later, most dolls are Korean. Wonder why, don't care. Pretty.
Step Three: Justifying dolls. I have the money, but I should be working on my business. Realise I can convince myself that the business can go into doll clothing and stuff for dolls.
Step Four: Look carefully at a doll for a long time, attempting to decide which to get.
Step Five: Fall horribly and randomly in love with a totally different doll, buy the head for that.
Step Six: Eventually obtain many many dolls, still not getting the one I originally looked at, because I have discovered I love limited sold out sculpts, and must buy them before their pricing gets retarded.
Step Seven:......?
Step Eight: Profit.

My experience so far: (I don't have a doll yet, but I will /determined)
1) Randomly browse deviantART.
2) See pretty picture. CLICK. (Oh why did I click???? )
3) Research like a maniac! Join DoA!
4) Lose sleep.
5) Tell my brothers about them. (My older brother already knows what they are)
6) Tell my mom about them, show pictures.
7) Cheer inwardly as mom goes 'Pretty.'
8) Ask mom for one. And tell her the price.
9) Try not to get depressed when mom says 'No.'
10) Keep babbling about dolls. (Well, not all the time)
11) Change mom's laptop wallpaper to a doll pic.
12) Cheer again when mom starts asking about them.
13) Don't give up!

 

Having found the hobby well after I was past the age of adulthood, I never had to convince anyone that I should have them. My most recent doll, however, was a present.

I don't have much difficulty with sticker shock; if I want something and can afford it, certainly I'll purchase it at one point or another.

I do remember being into other dolls as a child and teenager. I begged my parents for a particular (non-resin) doll for five Christmases straight and never received one due to the cost of a single doll. So, I can empathise with teenagers wanting these dolls. I bet your parents might be more amenable to it if you were working and offered to pay for it?Even with the price of some BJDs coming down, it -is- a lot of money for a teenager to be spending on a single object.

Well, my experience was~

- Saw a doll four years ago on a forum I once joined (I do believe it was a DOD Homme Ducan I saw o3O)
- Was completely astounded by their gorgeousness ;A; (And their price u__u)
- Researched for about four years, generally on and off but research none the less
- A few months ago my mom saw me looking at them
- Thought it was really weird I was looking at dolls "despite their beauty" :C
- Slyly drop hints of how beautiful I thought they were
- Is offered to be christmas present
- Tells price of one I have my eye on
- No faceup or clothes to lower price, this'll be my only Christmas present XD;

(Luckily I chose an MSD-sized one, so it cut the price in half from the usual 500$+ of SD sizes xD) (And the company I bought mine from includes a wig and eyes, so as long as I have them, I'm more than happy~ x3)

 

1. Browsing around on MySpace. Click on a random profile with strange doll in the default picture, go to pictures.
2. See Dream of Doll's company pictures.
3. Die. MUST. HAVE. ONE.
4. Google 'Dream of Doll'. Find website.
5. See price. LOL WUT? That's in a different currency right?
6. Go back to Google, find Den of Angels. Make an account.
7. Find Luts. Find El!
8. OMG MUST HAVE!
9. Do crazy amounts of research, allow dolls to slowly consume entire existence.
10. Go to a meet. Don't tell mother. Steal her camera and take lots of pictures. (bad idea when you're 14)
11. Mother finds pictures. D'oh. Mother asks questions, nearly strangles you when she finds out the price.
12. Convince Mother to pay for a small part of a DoD fullset Petsha for Christmas.
13. Celebrate!
14. Mother tells you she's changed her mind. Cancels order (on her credit card).
15. Enormous fight.
16. Secretly thank mother when Petsha owner pictures start popping up.
17. Get in a split for a vampire elf Chiwoo head.
19. Head arrives. Obsession begins.

 

Mine kind of Started with my girlfriend and i looking at obitsus, We got ourselves a couple of those 28cm ones mind you.
- She Found Dollzone... Fell in love with Mo'Wen, Bought him.. I was still iffy about them but thought they were pretty..
- She eventually turned me to the darkside..
- Pestered me Almost daily into telling her which one I liked most and if I could have one which sculpt would it be..
- Caved and told her a DZ Megi...
- She bought him for me as a Birthday/Graduation gift 3333 Miguel my megi started it all
I have a decent sized doll family each with a neat story but thats how I got my first he was a gift >>

Though I do Hint at EVERYONE in my family and Friends about the Dolls I am currently aiming at XD My Family wont give me cash for birthdays and Xmas cause they know it goes to dolls >>; XD Silver's Reasons " if each of my close friends gave me a mere 20$ for my Birthday i could buy my Delf Blanchette or my Crobidoll Lance! Oooh! This is fun! Getting into this hobby I... :

-found DOC through someone's (can't remember which artist) doll pics on Deviantart
-searched and first of all fell in love with both DOCs Yu and Si (a puppy boy!) & attempted to ask parents for a $300 doll and after a while left it alone, silently longing
-5 years later I become re-obsessed & get a Jun Planning Hestia as some precursor to the hobby (I still have her, take photos and dress her up)
-a few months later, for my birthday I think of asking for one and research until I find AOD & don't 100% love their sculpts until I see a Wang-Zi with an amazing faceup being sold by their official ebay seller. Beg parents for him until they give in (he was supposed to be my only present, but I got a carrier from my bro as well ^_^). I bothered AOD with too many questions while I was waiting and he finally arrived 2 days after my birthday hassle free. (Got 2 friends into the hobby in the meantime)
-In October (so soon) bought myself a Tender Too and Bee-a with part-time job money. (3 in 2 and 1/2 months, not bad )
-Next I'm saving up for a Doll-Love Brian whom I'll have by around June & Hoping to ask for a Pukipuki Ruby for my next birthday (August, so far away... o_0) then to save any holiday/extra money I can get for a FL Karsh. ^_^ That's my BJD experience so far and here's hoping my parents will buy me another "affordable" one!

 

Mine went something like this. Go online, see a doll on someones DA account. OOOh that is kinda cool. Look on ebay. Find a doll I like....ok click buy. Doll comes months later. Mom sees doll and says...that can't be cheap. I start my "it's more than a doll, its art" speech. And I buy the rest behind her back. Two years later she comes into my room and wonders where all these dolls came from. Yup...thats how that went.

-Giggle and show boss box of dolly bits (hereby amusing male boss with naked dolly-with-a-penis)
-mod box of dolly bits
-Love no-long-box-of-dolly-bits Lane
-Order Hound three months later
-trip over hound in process of making quesadillas... as boyfriend did not warn me I had a package
-Squeal and take lots of pictures while uniting dolly couple
-Mod hound almost immediately, and love to bits

And the rest is a fuzzy blur of making clothes, loving, researching and saving after this.
now, there's more boy dollies in the house than there are either people or cats.
