    1. Mine:

      1. Micchi spams dolly pictures in a chatroom. Pazuzu falls in love.
      2. Pazuzu joins DoA
      3. Pazuzu trolls dollywebsites. Thinks she wants a DZ Tintan
      4. Pazuzu discovers Souldoll and explodes.
      5. Pazuzu puts a Katie A. on layaway.
      6. Pazuzu gets impatient.
      7. Pazuzu gets dolly. :D

      It's a lot less interesting when you don't really have to ask your parents for permission. ^^;;

    2. Mine:
-See lovely doll on DOD years ago for the first time - was a poor student and thought prices was crazy. didn't give it another thought.

      - Saw lots of lovely dolls over the years - still thought prices were crazy. Never thought of buying. I registered on this site mid last year just for fun though.

      - This year, a friend wanted to buy dolls and asked me to recommend a site. I came on this site, and my eyes clicked with Doll Zone for some undefinable reason.

      - Went to doll zone and saw a doll that made me go 'I need this in my life'

      - So I bought her. Not much of a struggle for the buying part. The real struggle lies with waiting!

Luckily for me, I was never much of a spendthrift in my younger days. I never had expensive hobbies and didn't like shopping. So I had immediate cash for my first doll. I could never ask anyone to support such an expensive hobby. If I have the means to, I'd buy my dolls myself. I'd rather not ask for help. Not saying it's wrong, it's just the way I was brought up. My parents would never agree anyway. XD

    3. LOL that's an awesome topic xD
My mum was very, very mean. xD
Me: Daddy...i really really want this BJD *points to 1/6 AoD Mina* for my birthday 8D
Dad: D8 *shocked by price but saves to buy it anyway*
Me: Muuum, i feel bad that i made Dad buy me an expensive doll..
Mum: Dont feel bad, when we split up he didn't buy you birthday presents until a year or two ago, he can afford to make up for 21 years worth :)
Me: ...Oh yeah 8D *pesters Dad for second doll, 1/4 Illusion Spirit Jiao-Long*
      Dad:....*sigh*
Me: *speaking to fiancee* KYYLLLEE....I really want a bigger girl doll 8D There's this pretty one here that is really cheap! *points to 1/4 ResinSoul Mei*
      Kyle:....Ooookaaayyy...*sighs*
      Me: ...YAY 8D
Me: Kyyleee...can i use some expo money we saved to get these two Hujoo bjd's?
      Kyle: ...I supppooooosee..
      Me: OMG YAY *squee's*

    4. Oh my GOSH! This thread was amazing to read through. I don't have a "pretty please" moment at ALL to share. My purchase decision maybe even encouraged by my husband. It was like--

Me: wow these dolls are amazing, but look how much they cost.... *ponders spending so much on pretty things*

      Husband:
*looks over* eh, I know some guys that have ten or twenty paintball guns that are all about a thousand dollars each. Hobbies are expensive. You should get what you want, just make sure to get the more expensive ones first because if you get cheap ones you'll just replace them later anyway.

      Me:
      O_o ....well okay then.

    5. Wow it was so interesting to read some of these 8D

I didn't get into the hobby until after I'd graduated high school, had my own car and job etc. I was blessed with amazing parents who have never told me what I can and cannot do so. My experience went something like this...

      - Sees doll for the first time on a random website with mother. We agree ONE DAY we'll own one. Maybe even go halfsies on one. Don't think about it for 3+ years.
      - Good friend calls me. Tells me to come out and chill at work with her (we all work at fast food joints lol) she has something she wants to show me. It's a DoD doll. Asian Ball Jointed Doll. His name is Toru and he is adorable. He came with a booklet of other DoD dolls.
      - I have a minor anurism. Buy my own doll that evening with little to no research. 8D; A DoD Twingkey.
      - Wait for said doll. While waiting, join DoA. End up purchasing ANOTHER doll on the second hand marktet. A Volks MSD Sakura.
      - Recieve the Sakura first, then my Twingkey. Is ecsatic. The hobby has settled in and isn't going anywhere!

Over the years I've done more research and due to my psychotically quick begining purchases I didn't end up keepign either of my first dolls! I have mostly SDs now (two slim minis :) ) and have finally figured out what to do with them all! Haha. I never had to ask my parents permission. I told my mother what I was buying and she didn't seem at all surprised. I was a big barbies kinda kid.

In fact, my mom has always thought my dolls were pretty neat. My father thinks so too and always comes home from his work (he works out of state mostly. Always hittin' random malls and fleamarkets etc) with things for my kids. lol.

Not an overly interesting story but. There it is! <3

    6. HA! Best husband ever!

      My Doll Experience:

      First Doll: AOD FEI
Me: Ohh pretty, must have! Husband, I'm gonna buy this doll! And she's only -LIES, ALL LIES ABOUT COST OF DOLL SO THAT IT IS MUCH LESS THAN IRL-
Husband: Really? Umm, can we afford that?
Me: Of couurse, but she's going to cost me -LIES AND SAYS MORE EXPENSIVE FIGURE OF MONEY FOR CLOTHING, SHIPPING AND FACE UP SO AS TO MAKE BALANCE REFLECT ACTUAL AMOUNT OF MONIES SPENT-
      Husband: *dies of heart attack*

Second Doll -IpleHouse Gentle Cocori Second Hand-
      Me: I want this doll!
Husband (who has been magically revived with no damage and memory of dying form heart attack): Well we can't spend any money right now, how are you going to pay for her?
Me: I'll sell the other doll! And her stuff, that should be enough!
Husband: Ah, good plan....how much does she cost again?
Me: *smothers husband in hot smex so he doesn't think about numbers too well*

Heh. Not exactly like that, but if I was writing a television show, that's how I'd shoot it. Seriously though, i never have to beg. I don't even *have* to ask, but since we're married and our finances are combined and etc., I like to warn him. He collects stuff too though, so he understands the desire and the money spent on things that don't seem to matter to anyone else.

    7. Man...when did I even learn about BJDs? ummm... *thinks* It went something like this, I think....
-*browse deviantart randomly* "Ooohhh...pretty pictures..." Watch Yukiseshin(sp?) who photographs her bjds. Fall in love with dolls. Never intend to purchase one, ends up forgetting about them.
-Start talking with friend about bjds. Decide buying one is a super-awesome idea.
      -Peruse dollie-sites, admiring pretty pictures.
-See new friend with one at Bakuretsu con '09. NEEEEEDS.
-Do a bunch of searching, fall in love with DoD Sha and A-en, freak out over price.
-Search for another doll within budget. Find a few. Fall in love with Doll-love Anona.
      -Go up to mom.
Maria: "Heeeeyy...So, I found this cool hobby *cough*obsession*cough*..." Explain a bit of hobby. Over-exaggerate how crazy some collecters are so having one doll will seem not so crazy.
      Mom: "ok...and you're telling me this...why? :/"
Maria: "Caaauuusseeee.....I want one. :3" Acts pathetic. "If I pay for most of it, will you help me buy it for my birthday? It can be your only gift to me!"
      Mom: o_O "Uumm...I dunno..."
-A few days go by. Maria: "sooo..about that doll..I can has? :D"
Mom: "Sure! Help out around the house, and I'll buy her for ya!"
Maria: :D "I CAN DO THAT!" Works for a month, keeping track of earnings. Tells mom when enough has been earned.
Mom: "Ok. Let's order her." Maria struggles through trying to figure out ebay's ordering system. Finally gets it.
-Almost dies cause Lili is soon-to-be on her way!
      -Week goes by. :D
-Entertains self by joining DoA and playing with friend's doll. ^3^
      -Another week goes by. :/
-Starts to spend more and more time on DoA.
      -ANOTHER week goes by. D:
-Emails seller. Is told she will be shipped the next day; will take ten more days for her to arrive home.
      -Waits impatiently. >_<

And that's where I'm at! *nervous twitch has developed due to waiting so long* o_<

    9. Oh god. My story about getting my BJD is long. Here goes!

      Last Summer, on deviantART
me; Oh my goodness. What is that thing? *sees picture of BJD on front page* .. It's beautiful. *instantly searches up what BJDs are*

      Last October
me; Hey mom, I want a BJD. *explains what they are etc etc*
mom; That's expensive. Ask your father.
      me; *asks father*
      father;
      no. absolutely not.
me; *is constantly and continuously searching up dolls; had to go with inexpensive company and MSD size to be cheaper, with more probability of getting one*

Last December / This January / February
*enter heated arguments about the price of it etc etc*
And FINALLY, the parents let me get one. Right at ordering time, as soon as I press the "confirm" button and confirm payment and that jazz, another small argument ensues.

      Early March
He's finally home! And parents aren't upset about it anymore!

Let's hope I wont go through the same thing in getting my next doll! :D
Whoo. It was a struggle and a half getting Hayden here. But my mom likes him! And my dad is. Neutral LOL

    10. Seeing as all of my dollies are currently at my good friend's house, I'd say my begging was fruitless in the end. TT TT Thank goodness I'm off to college in 4 months~ (I'm sorry if my story is rather... peculiar). My parents honestly did not mind me spending this amount, they just did not like dolls due to superstitious beliefs and I suppose old maid's tales. =A= They said it was a complete waste of money when I could buy textbooks or clothing or even food, but then again, they've never had the luxury of enjoying collecting something that may be priceless to some but valuables that others are very attached to, like myself. And now, without further ado...

First Dollie (Now dismembered and given away completely TT TT) - DoD Twing-key:
In middle school, I saw Auroreblackcat's dA BJD photos. Her photo comments linked to where she bought her doll, Bee-A (DoD). Clicked on the link and went onto DoD's website. Browsed around, fell in love with Si and Twing-key almost instantly. Narrowed it down to Twing-key because she was a girl doll and I would feel more "comfortable" with a girl doll (silly me, that's not a good reason!) Oggled over the pretty, life-like dolls which I've never seen before for 2 years. *_*
Freshman year, I finally got Twing-key after pestering my mom and with the help of my dad, convinced her that dolls are not actually harmful objects in a household/not filled with evil spirits~ ^0^ Was so happy when my parents just paid for the doll!
Bought her a dress set from DoD and DoD's boots. <3 I also bought a angel set from Volks's something-Tenshi store (My memory is falling short)
(Miraculously,) 3 years later when I was in high school (senior year), I decided it was time for her to get the newer DoC girl body and commission a faceup.
I set up my Twing-key's head with a faceup artist from DoA, sent the head over, old body was tossed into a box in my closet while the new body sat in my room.
Mom had grudingly accepted my doll up until she saw the headless, dressed in Volks's clothing and FREAKED OUT.
      Mom swore that I was only rejected by my dream university because of a headless doll with a hex. She then took away both the old and new bodies and gave them to god-knows-who. ;_;

      Second Dollie
... So, looking over this, my first doll story sounds tragic... BUT, I managed to save my LE Sleeping Elf Yen (Ezurael) and swapped him into my friend's bag at an anime con... <.<;;; Ezurael's safe, plan to take him West with me to college. ^^
How did I get Ezurael? It was MUCH easier the second time around because I asked my dad who tends to "spoil" me--he paid for the whole darn set, clothing and wig and all AND let me buy the matching Sleeping Pitts doll for a friend's birthday!
      Keeping him was okay and safe, up until my fiasco with my former Twing-key. ;A;

"Third" Dollie/Floating Head - IOS WS Anos Head (Cielian)
...Never even told my parents about this one.
Fell in love with IOS Anos head, scoured the forum for one for sale. Luckily, Reshana was selling her Anos head in mint condition (no faceup, only taken out of the box a few times).
Used my own card via Paypal. Easy transaction.
When the box came, my mom was like, "....WTF did you order NOW?"
      Luckily, at the time, I was going through a shoe and clothing craze so I told her it was a few shirts ordered, seeing as the box was over a foot long. <_<;;;
I definitely need to get him his body when I go to CA for school... Mom plans to stay in the home I grew up in or back to Taiwan. Dad bought a house in CA, probably gonna get orders for a new body and clothes/wigs shipped there. ^^

    11. Mine goes like this. Now,about 4 years ago my mom purchased a BJD,so she knows what its like to save up for them.So she is looking at dolls and I happen to look over her shoulder, and there she is.Or her head at least. So all I have to say is"Thats the one." and my mom just nods and says "Well, either for your birthday or Christmas we will get her." end of story. So,yeah my mom wasent that hard to convince ,my grandparents who could afford five out of there wallet,on the other hand...Well,I havent told em,dont plan on tellin em,just saying "hey, for my birthday I would like cash."

    12. I was about thirteen when I first found out about BJDs and it was in this Japanese magazine had subscribed to, at first I didn't really pay attention but then one day when another of that magazine showed up and they were in it again I was bit more intrigued and searched them up online, didn't find much and just left it at that.
About a year or so later my sister and I decided we'd do as much research as possible on them and we did, we talked to our mum about getting one but when she saw the price her reaction was "Hell no. Not unless you sell a kidney." So then I asked my dad to help... Oh dad, not the right person to ask for help. He sent me forty dollars and told me he'd start sending me an allowance but of course, it was a lie and he never has.
It being the school year and not being allowed to get an actual job we had to find another method of earning money, my sister just saved up odds and ends money and was able to purchase her first doll from a friend with our older sister's help.
Originally my older brother was going to buy me a doll as a birthday present but I refused to let him do that, I'd feel too guilty if he bought me a doll and before that my mum was going to buy me a doll for Christmas but I still would have felt guilty her spending so much on me, so I worked hard to earn my own money by spending the last some odd months babysitting some brat that kept hitting on me all the time, but finally I have saved up almost enough and my mum and brother agreed to chip in as a reward for being responsible and spending most of my babysitting money paying for my dog's vet bills.

    13. I obtain my dolls by earning the money and buying them, without having to convince anybody. After earning the money, I find a doll I want and click the "buy" button, then get clothes and accessories. Boring, I know.

    14. How I got hooked:
I am into Legend of Zelda and I came across a Kafei BJD on Deviant art when I was scrounging around and looking at fanart. I've been piqued and now officially addicted ever since.

My hubs supports my hobby, and I now work for my dolly addiction, but in the early days I got my pout on and made him his favorite dinners for like a week straight.

Where parents and sig others are concerned: It also helps to ask for a $1000 doll, then later on "settle" for one that's a mere $400. Unless you really want a $1000 doll. Then you have to bump the upper limit to $1500 hehe.

    15. haha....well, our family is anything but rich, so i didnt even have the thought of asking my parents to buy me my girl...so i saved up all my own money from dog sitting and house sitting and kid sitting and other random summer jobs, and finally got her....:D i actually bought her in store (sadly, she considered off-topic, because she's a half vinyl half resin mix...>.> ), so i didnt have to wait for shipping or anything, so my "obtaining" story is pretty shojo-sparkly ^0^

    16. AHHHH it took me soo long to get my first doll. I think my mom saw it coming eventually. But basically I had pointed out beautiful/cute/shocking/interesting dolls in magazines and online for years and my mom kind of got used to it ("What... another doll picture?! You'd better not buy one." two years later: *sigh* "let me see....") >w<;; Finally I kind of found the perfect doll (I was kind of in-between 3, but only because my "perfect one" - LTF Ante - was the most expensive), and my mom saw the glint in my eye, and I had all of my high school allowance and graduation money saved up, and I just finished an amazing high school career and was going off to a somewhat decent college, and basically everything was perfectly aligned, so my mom gave me the OK to buy her. Unfortunately I ordered her towards the end of the summer, so I didn't get to spend much time with her when she arrived (before I had to go back to school after a weekend break), but FORTUNATELY she happened to arrive JUST IN TIME for my birthday (completely unplanned). So yay! All those years of waiting paid off. I'm really happy with my choice! :D:D:D

    17. Hahahahahaha.... ha XD
...me too. Now, at least (and minus the "buy clothes and accessories," since I'm a cheapo who'd rather buy another doll than lavish on clothes.... though...that's changing a bit now XD)...

My very first doll whom I bought several years ago took some parental convincing, but that was back when I didn't have my own paypal and I was still a little noobish child living under their roof. When I mean some, I mean it went like this:

Me: I want this doll. I can use it for art and stuff.
      Dad: How much?
      Me: $200-ish
Dad: That's a lot. You sure?
      Me: Yep.
      Dad: Okay.

You see, I use my own money for every purchase. I would never dream of asking for money for such a large doll from my parents.

    18. ...I guess I have really supportive parents, because they didn't really freak out when I got my dolls.

      First doll: (now long gone...)
I wanted a BJD SOOOOOO badly, didn't want to spend buttloads of money for one. Fell in love with Kid Delf Ani, but 220 was waaaayyy too much (silly me, little did I know...) I found AoD, settled on Mimi (without ever having seen a BJD irl) and bought her. I told my parents a few days later "Oh, btw I ordered this doll. She'll be here in a couple months, and she cost about $145." Parents: "um. What? Why?" I later sold her because she wasn't what I expected, and she creeped me out. A lot. XD

2nd doll: PUKI. Need I say more?
Again, I ordered first, explained later. It was my money, so they didn't really care until my daddy saw how tiny she was and found out how much I'd paid for her. He freaked out more than my mommy did.

      3rd doll: MNF
Now I feel dumb for not going with the Kid Delf, because 220 is freaking cheap compared to what this sucker cost me. BUT. She was oh so worth it, and I love her to death. I worked hard for most of the money, some was from Christmas, but I ordered as soon as I got my paycheck. I did tell my parents beforehand, because she cost so much more (Almost 500), but again, my mommy was ok with it, my daddy wasn't thrilled with the price but he saw how excited I was and dropped it. Besides, he chased down the mailman with me to get my package. (Epic delivery story FTW.)

    19. 2005 - Volunteer at local anime con, see one of the con staff showing off her BJD.
2006 - Volunteer again at same con, end up being the door person at the BJD panel. Find them interesting but the price crazy.
      - 2007 - LJ friend has a bunch of Pullip photos, think they're neat but expensive.
      - 2009 - After putting dolls out of my mind for 2 years decide I'm at a place financially I could buy a few. Start looking at BJDs but only really aware of Dollfie Dreams, not interested so I indulge myself in Pullips.
      - See a LittleFee Flora, have just discovered Fairyland, enamoured by the pretty. Decide I want a tiny.
      - While looking for Pullip wigs, discover non-volks and Fairyland BJDS. Become strangely fond of YID Freezia.
      - Discover Charles Creature Cabinet's Kaba, decide I want an Anthro. Then discover the Pipos Cheschires and Rabbits. INSTANT LOVE.
      - Join DoA because I'm indecisive and should probably research.
      - Decide I'm too indecisive to buy a BJD, become scared of of yellowing risks, decide to let it go. A few months later while looking at pretty DoD pictures realize the risks are worth it. Start looking again.
      - Manage to save up 200$ towards new doll, despite having enough already, realize narrowing it down will be haaaard.
      - Actually take out the tape measure and realize SDs aren't that big, start looking at SDs and bigger. Fall in love with IH Jessica. Decide to buy IH Jessica and IH Amy. Hope to goodness I don't change my mind again but decide to wait until Christmas.
      - Actually mention to my mother I'm contemplating buying a biiiig doll. She laughs and asks the price, I tell her none of her business. She laughs again, and says that "I told her!" then asks where I'd put it.
      - Realise waiting is good because there is no room and I should dejunkify my apartment first. Now I'll have a reward if I successfully curb my hoarding. :P If not, more to add to the mess!

    20. I love reading these stories! It makes me more excited for the arrival of my first doll. My girlfriend and I will be saving up for our babies. They're too expense to ask for anymore, but this keeps us from having to beg for them, which works out for us in the end. Besides, now they'll be something we worked for, so they'll be even more special.

Not that I have anything against those who gets them from their parents! I wish my parents would buy me one! I'm twenty and am often just given things, but my doll will be the first big purchase I will make on my own. I'm very excited. (: It will only add to the very personal experience of making the clothes and doing the faceup myself!
