"PRETTY please?": the art of obtaining.

Apr 28, 2005

    1. To get my first (and so far only) doll I had first saved up babysitting money...then high school graduation came around, and I got a lot of money from my announcements (I didn't know I knew so many people!) and I used a huge chunk of it for my doll :)

    2. my stories go more like this:

saving up doll money, saving in emergency fund....
car breaks down. raid emergency fund, "borrow" from doll fund... (ok a few more months to make up the loss right?)
then something else needs fixed, or replaced (basement had a minor flood, so there's $200 for a dehumidifier)

Car wreck (hit by drunk who was also fleeing law enforcement) car totalled, also $200 of groceries in the trunk wiped out,
several other things broken...oh and myself and friend were HURT and taken to ER... so that's all run up bills.
My insurance gave me almost enough to replace my car with an equivalent car, so again, raid the emergency and doll savings...)

      *sigh*
(I DO have a few dolls now, but there's another 1 or 2 I'd like to get, and it isn't looking like it will happen.)

    3. Well, I have been looking at BJD's for a long, long time. I knew I had a $500-600 limit on one if I found one. With that in mind, I decided to save a little here and there until I found one. She is on her second and last payment soon and I have sold everything from dolly stuff to Harley Davidson Leather Trixie pants for her. I guess that is what I do; I recycle my other collections into some cash and then get that special girl as soon as I can. The problem sometimes for me is that I love so many lol!! It is trying to keep focused on one at a time so that I can keep the dolly fam in control. I want to keep everyone comfortable in their chairs or sofas and with nice clothing too; so I have to save up and sell off other stuff so I can purchase those items to go along with them. The recycling continues!

    4. My parents helped me pay 45 percent of the original cost of my first doll as a Christmas gift which was very nice of them ^^

    5. LOL, what the heck man. That post was hilarious.

I'm fortunate enough to have my own job, and I told my mom about the doll, but. ...She doesn't know how much.
She just asks and I go "expensiveLBURHGAURHGURHGASF" and walk away.
If she ever found out she'd probably kick me out or some crap. Dad too. Lmfao.

    6. My experiences with begging for dolls... Let's see...

1 - Begging for Xionesse (my first one):
Me: Moooooooom, I saw this girl carrying a cute dolly, and *follow an explanation of what BJD are, and how long has been since I wanted one*
      Mom: I don't think it's a good idea...
*some time later and much begging and puppy eyes*
Mom: Okay, yes, buy one, and leave me alone at last!

2 - It summarizes as "Dollie received - Mom sees dollie - Whole family likes it - Mom asks for a doll for herself"

3 - Asking for Regen LE:
Me: look, mom, he's so cute!
Mom: Well, yes, he is... Okay, let's buy it.
Me: O.o Mom... It's, like, BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP dollars...
Mom: Oops... Let's not buy it, then.
Me: *cursing herself for trying to be fair*
      *hours later*
Mom: There's a layaway or something, isn't it?

The other two stories are pretty similar to #3, so I won't go into them. I'm lucky, because my mother likes BJD too, even if she only wants one, so I mostly have to explain how cute the doll is, and a few good points it has, and she gives in to her own temptation and allows me to buy them. She has paid for a few of them, too. I'm still thinking it must be some kind of bribe :D For what, I don't know...

    7. Mine went something like....
Me: Mom look at this doll!
      Mom: Oh thats cool
      1YEARLATER
Me: Mom...look at this doll! *Goes into how they are customizable*
Mom: Wow thats pretty neat! How much are they?
Me: Well their about ---------------- much money......
      Mom: ...No.
1WEEKLATER*And 1 piano bought for sis*
Me: How about this one..? Not quite as big as the one I want, but it doesn't have to be! I can collect clothes and wigs for her and by the time I get another one she won't have to be nekid!
Mom: Hm...sounds reasonable, how do you order?

    8. HUms I don´t have this problem at all, cause i've been working a lot of years now , so I´m able to pay for my dolls myself, but my mum is always angry when i get one.. and now that I´m waiting for two. she is like, stop wating money on that and save it for a house to live XD

    9. I dont exactly remember how i asked xD it started like, a year ago when i said i wanted one, i had all ready been looking at pictures of some for a while, and my mom thought they where nice but didnt really like teh price, though she did understand why they are so exspensive, and she didnt complain about how i wanted one, shes hlping me pay for my yeon-ho's body, actually, even though she doesnt have the money >x< she wouldnt have to pay for it if my dad would have givin me some money though xD insted he got mad at me for asking for money, even though he keeps asking me if i got a body yet xD
So now i have to do some work around the house and stuff to earn the money,

i think basically i just kept saying how much i wanted one for a month or two, and then i said i was going to save for one and then i started saving, bought a head(which my dad cares way to much about o-o everytime i'm doing ANYTHING with it he's like "be carfull with it," "dont drop it" "Dont do that," "that might stain it" "that might scratch it" xD
i was wiping off some pastel with some really soft Kleenex stuff and he was telling me i should use somthign else because Kleenex is made with word fibers and they might scratch it o-o xD

"get a job" is exactly what my dad keeps telling me to do when i say i want to buy somthing, or if i ask for money. . .
exept if i say i cant he just repeats "get a job" and then i tell him i cant, cause theres no one to drive me and i cant drive xD Then he gives me random lectures about how theres work around the house i can do xD

    10. Thisis a really helpfull thread for those people who still do not own a doll but desperately want one (like me!).
I've found some new techniques to perhaps achieve an OK-GO signal from my parents.. my list of behaviour so far:

      - First, of course, find the doll. A Dylan Ringdoll. Oh em gee, so beautful!
      - Show doll to mother.
("What do you think of this doll, mom?"
      - "Wow, that's so pretty! She (it's a he, mom).. Oh, he looks really pretty."
      "Can I have hi-"
      - "Too expensive."
"But you said he was pret-"
      - "No.")
      - Droop off to room, scheming plans.
      - Find a cheaper doll which I like even better.
      - Show it to mom.
      - Repeat same conversation.
      - Write name of doll all over the whiteboards in the house, drabble hearts around it + price
      - Find cheaper clothes which I like even better and keep on lowering the price.
      - Subtly drop his name in a conversation with mother.
      - Silently hint at doll.
      - Be good.
      - Hint some more.
      - ????
      - PROFIT! (well, soon, I hope v__v)

This has been going on for more than 3 months now xD
And the stupid thing is: it's my own money. I worked my ass off for it, so why not spend it the way I want?

    11. I haven't bought a doll yet, but I'm about to, either when I get money this month or the next...

The positive thing is that I've moved out and it's my own money to spend so my parents can't really complain about that ^^
Yay for choosing a college far away enough to finally get to move out XD

The bad thing is that the money is my student loan and I have bills to pay too (not to mention that one doll about equals the cost of 2/3 of the money I receive each month) @.@

Saving up a little each time I get money is the only way to ever going to be able to buy a doll. And taking on a job on the side is close to impossible, I already spend all week (weekends included) at school working 9 am - 6pm (if I don't stay even longer) :P
      I'm thinking of going through all my old junk lying around too, I can probably sell some stuff to add a little to the doll funds ^^;

    12. I asked my dad for this because it's easier to ask him to buy me stuff than my mom. xD

Anyways, I asked/told my dad I wanted this doll that was about $600 (Souldoll Chiron). He told me to lose 25lbs and I get the doll. I was too lazy to exercise so it never happened. xD

The second time I asked him (which was maybe a year or so later) for a bjd was also about $600 (Iplehouse Asa). I told him that I wanted to make doll clothes and sell them. I told him that because I wanted her REALLLLLLLLLLLLLY bad and also wanted to earn some money for myself instead of having to ask parents for money all the time. He supported the idea and told me he will get me the doll and give me a capital (which includes money for fabric). But once I start selling bjd clothes...I have to owe him back. haha
I'm still improving on my sewing skills but hopefully soon I will start selling bjd clothes and give him his money back. lol

    13. Woo, mine was so simple and painless compared to others. Really, it was a process of convincing myself :P

      Went along the lines of:
-Sees dolls around on the net over the years, vaguely knows what they are and thinks they look kinda neat but never considered buying one. Especially upon seeing some on ebay and a site going for over $1000 USD
-Browsing through My Little Pony forums, sees a dolls sections. Browses through pictures of Pullips and decides to get one since they're not terribly expensive.
-Receives Pullip in mail, likes it though wouldn't mind a bigger and more mature body, and a smaller head. Browses through pictures in the MLP doll section where some people have Pullips and BJDs, therefore remembers that BJDs exist again.
-Sees a few BJDs on a table at a convention, specifically one with armor. Wants the armor.
-Randomly looks BJDs up on ebay, sees many that aren't quite to my taste, but a few that are. Ad they can be so big compared to anime figures/statues! *.* Considers.
-Looks at prices, compares that to most anime figures/statues which are around $100 USD each... And a few that can go up to $4-500 USD.
-Thinks of how pretty BJD are and starts looking through and taking note of ones to be added to the Want list. Examines bank account. Buys one.
-Receives first BJD. Buys another one XD

      When I showed him around
Aunt: She's really pretty, I used to have a doll a little like her when I was really young.
Me: (No comment, in head 'It's a boy, damnit! Flat chest, flat chest I say!')
Parents: Oh that looks nice, look at all the detail in it.
Me: Look, you can take his wig off! And the back of his head comes off. You know, like in that Hannibal movie where he eats the guys brains while he's still alive? :D You can swap his eyes around too, and take him apart.
      Mother: o.o
      Father: Huh, that's pretty neat.
      Brother: Gah! That's creepy!

    14. Oh this is helpful. I'm in the mist of convincing grandparents =D

-Me: did you know that if barbie was real she'll be 8 feet tall?
-Nana: That's an odd thing to say.
-Me: But it's true. Her size 3 feet are only good to chew on. Isn't this doll (Dollzone Joe) much nicer.
      -Nana: How much?
-Me: (Wow straight to the point) Uh...$500USD :sweat
-Nana: Where are you getting that money from?
-Me: You like him don't you?
      -Nana: It's not Christmas yet.

Oh man I have to wait so long. And I have four others on my "to get" list  I think the next time I talk to her I'll be like. They are way cooler you can change his eyes hair even his body. Not only the clothes.

    15. Ha ha. This is sooooo inventive, I'd be very surprised if you don't have your doll by now!

    16. I am convincing my mom right now to buy be my second BJD. :P My story goes like this:

Me: "Ma, look at these handsome dolls ~ !"
Her: "Oh! They look like girls!"
      Me: "No... they are boys."
      Her: "Errr... yes. I see..."
Me: "Eriadne doesn't have a boyfriend -- she'll be lonely." *puppy dog eyes*
Her: "I'll buy you when I go to LA this October."
Me: "REALLY??? YAY!!! But it would be expensive though because VOLKS USA is the only walk-in
store for BJDs" *gives her mom the printed address and map for VOLKS USA in LA* :P
Her: "Okay. :) Me and your uncle will look for this shop."
      Me: "Yay!!! Thanks, Ma!"

I wish that she'll not faint when she sees the prices... :P

    17. I was first introduced to them when my friend got one. At first I was kinda weirded out by them but I somehow ended up on the DoD website where he bought his boy from looking at the DoTs. I decided they were too expensive, but felt the DoCs were in a good price range and became interested in those, especially Petsha. Unfortunately I didn't have a job at that point so I couldn't buy one and just kinda forgot about them. During that time my friend had to sell his doll to help out with rent and such. Then a couple of months ago, I became interested in them again, and went back to the DoD website. I decided I didn't like Petsha as much as I liked Leya now. I don't know what changed my mind, maybe Leya had new photos done? I decided I was gonna save up by trying to sell art for cheap, and I decided I would save up so my friend could get a new doll too. I didn't ever sell any art, because I ended up getting a job and didn't have time for art! Now I've paid 20% on Layaway on a Too, who'll be coming to me for a bit, then going on to my friend when I can afford my Leya and she arrives! :)

    18. You guys actually get your parents to buy these? Flipping heck, if I'd done that when I was at home I would have gotten such a whack! 0.0
I guess I am glad I got into this hobby in my twenties. Means I can save up for whatever I want and not have to ask first.

    19. For mine it went somthing like this.

Me: Mom can I get a job
Mom: No you have school to consitrate on
Me: please about four thoustand times
      Mom: *Finally gives in*
Me: gets a job at Barnes and nobles
Four months later i got Fantasia second hand and I love her

      My second: Fifty dollars short
BF: *Finds out by talking to mome* gives me the last fifty
      Me: upset that he did
Him: Says i could pay it back (I did)
me: was forced to go to a motercycle show lol my second was a Asura

    20. Well I was agonizing over every doll...they are so pretty and gorgeous.
My tastes have changed quite a bit since I have been on DOA.

Then I stumbled onto SOOM. (I'm so screwed...lol)

      Here's my little tid bit:
      -Searching for the "perfect doll"
      -bazillion sites later, SOOMed. @_@
-Drools over Sabik Elf...Sobs at the lack of funds.
-Goes to DOA, searches for other dolls on the market
      -stumbles across a Soom Silt.
      -decides to join split.

-Sells everything I don't use or need
-works backside off with art commissions to make the final payments.
      -pays the rest off.
-feels oh so proud I did all that by myself!!

-Goes back to Soom and looks at Sabik....
-makes devious plan to get funds for Sabik.
-Works on acting skills for begging.
      -Begs for Sabik for bday.

-is told to get job. (lol)
      -is getting another job.
