"PRETTY please?": the art of obtaining.

Apr 28, 2005

    1. I didn't know I could also do a second doll. Well, now that I have one... :)

      Second Doll
      - Start on first doll's storyline
      - Write about older brother
      - Realize that I have to introduce the brother at some point
      - Decide I have to get an SD to be her brother, or rewrite the story
      - Originally decide on the DM Kara Klum
      - Realize it's too expensive
      - Decide on BBB Apollo
      - Save for doll
      - Almost don't get to buy doll
      - Get to buy doll
      - Decide I want to change his character a little, anyway

    2. Honestly? I'm pretty sure my scenario went something like..

"Yo ma, I'm asking for an expensive doll for my birthday, I'll put in money too"
      "Ok"

Hahahah XD I do not remember my mom reacting to this in a good or bad way, she just went along with it. However, I do not think she expected my collection to expand so rapidly! I do not even tell her when/what I order for doll things and I even use her Paypal! One day she asked how many heads I had (8) and she was like, " Oh wow O.O how did you manage that?". Then we agreed the heads are actually pretty afordable and easy to obtain on their own. I usually ask for bodies/full dolls as gifts.

    3. first doll

      Watch Rozen Maiden
      google rozen maiden dolls
      see volks
      see price tag
      instantly dissapointed
go to J-culture con and see doll stall
oohhhs and aaahhhs for a while whilst friend obsesses over food
      gets home
      searches for more BJD
      Researches for about a week
Asks for one as a christmas present and my wonderful daddy says yes!!
Looks at volks standard SD, dies because of price.
Finds Angel of Dream, subsequently falls in love with Rao
      Order Rao with a faceup.
Huggles Dad and Mom to death
Proceeds to order clothes for her.
      Rao comes with her outfits.
      Dresses her etc.

      Second Doll

Joins DoA (happy, happy day indeed)
Searches the database, finds more lovely volks dolls.
Finds owner pictures of Bianka/Rose and Charlotte.
-Waits until October 2011 then finds a Bianka fullset on MP-
Me: Dad...You know how I got Tomoe for my birthday last year. Well can I please have another girl this year?
      Dad: Which one now?
Me: -proceeds to explain all about Bianka and how she is such an amazing price-
      Dad: Go on then...
Me: -sorts out layaway with seller and pays deposit- I love you soooo much dad!!!

      Third Doll Hopefully

Finds a charlotte fullset for sale and dies from happiness-
Drops hints to father and tells mother my not-so-nefarious plot to get Charlotte
      Keeps checking on the post.
Finds a Charlotte head for sale and sees the price ($1200)
      Dies from shock
Tells parents to make them see how much of a good deal Charlotte is
Working up the courage to ask Dad if I can get her on a loooong layaway with me paying each month.

Yeah I know asking my Dad for my dolls is really cheeky but I'm too young to legally work, if I do it's child labour. My dad is always telling me that he wants to get me something that I actually want for my birthday so we settled on a doll each year. Charlotte I have wanted since the beginning, I wish I could scrape together the funds, maybe I can sell off my teddy bear collection.

    4. Wow, it's amazing to see the different ways people all arrive here... my own experience was something like this:

-Stumble across a pic on deviant of a smallish person standing in the snow.
-Realize that's a doll (after a lot of squinting)
-Look at more BJDs. See price tag. Throw idea out the window.
-Be fascinated with BJDs seen at cons for the next two years.
-Stumble across Souldoll's site by accident
-Gasp at the sight of Soulldoll's Lester (again, glance at price tag and throw idea out the window.)
-One year later, go to work at a horse camp. Get kinda homesick and somehow start looking at BJDs during breaks.
-Browsing intensifies. Stumble across Resinsoul and Bobobie, realize BJDs aren't all $400+
-Vow to acquire. Roommates swear my insanity.
-Get home, show pictures to family, receive .... unfavorable responses. Older brother: "NO WAY ARE YOU GETTING ONE OF THOSE CREEPY SEX DOLLS!" Me: "HUH?!"
-Tap in to my stubborn streak and convince father that living on his own has fried older brother's brain.
-Acquire consent. Father agrees to pay part of the price as a birthday present.
      -Buy.
      -Squee.
      -Wait.
      -Wait more.
      -Birthday goes by.
      -Wait another week.
-Mysterious package arrives in the mail.
      -Doll achieved.

    5. The first time I saw a doll was on the internet CB
      -Forget about it
      -see at first anime con
      -think they're cool but creepy
      -forget about them
      -see one on deviantart
      -WANT
      -BEG PARENTS
      -Dad says NO
      -I cry and storm off
      -Almost buy one
-Dad changes mind at last minute
-Commences begging for a Bobobie Apollo for christmas
      -Beg
      -Beg
      -Beg
      -BEG
      -Orders
      -YAY
      -See another doll I want
      -OMG DADDY LOOKIT THIS DOLL!
-repeats begging and crying about how "it's my money I would be using so nyeh!"
-Getting doll is work in progress

      And that's my story lol

    6. The way I went about it I ended up with not one, but TWO, dolls.
Found a beautiful LE doll and asked for it for Christmas (which I refused to give my mom a Christmas list so the only thing she had to buy me was the doll XD) When I went to order it, it was gone! So... my mom made me pick another. Shortly after ordering my 2nd choice of doll, maybe 2 weeks later, I found the LE doll for sale by a dealer. My mom then said "Well, I promised you the LE one... so buy it too."

So now I have a habit of always asking for a doll, and doll items, for Christmas XD

Also "HEY MOM, this doll looks like me! :D " works occassionally XD

    7. I told my mom about one a long time ago. I think it was Volks or Luts, I can't remember, but the doll was a full set and it was like $800. She said no of course. And she didn't want me to buy them. And I ended up not getting that one, and it's not on my list to get now.

But now I am buying a doll through the MP here and I'm not even going to tell her about it. I just said I was buying something that might require a signature on delivery. So she'll get to find out after I open the box and get everything situated. o3o

    8. Don't have. D:
But I'll probably scrape the money together when I can finally justify it.
Parents will never, ever, EVER know. <_<

Please get here safe and sound and soon~!

    11. That sounds like my mom. XD I was talking about them and she wondered how many I had. I told her and she was all "O_O Where are they all?" I showed her and her eyes just got huge. XD

Only two of my dolls were asked for: one was an incentive-reward-birthday doll (27th birthday) and the other was just a b-day doll (this year).

      Incentive-reward-birthday doll acquisition:

Me: *browsing doll sites, look at Iplehouse* OMG O_O *heart skips at the promo pic for Benny*

I emailed the pics to mom and she liked her, but I didn't ask. Yet. Later that evening...

Me: *half joking* So....can I have her?
      Mom: How much is she?
      Me: well...*tells the total*
Mom: Are you insane? All that for a DOLL? No!
Me: It's ok, I was mostly kidding. ^_^; She sure is pretty though.
Mom: Yes, she really is beautiful. Very expensive, but beautiful. :)

*later that evening, Mom and I are trying to work up the will to finish an ESL cert. course online*

Mom and Me: *massive headaches and severely annoyed* x_x So...not...motivated!

Me: *back to staring at Benny's pretty picture*

Mom: *watching me* You can get her.

      Me:....what?

Mom: When you finish all the modules, you can order her.

Me: Are you sure? She's so expensive! And I'd want the whole set...

Mom: Yes, I mean it. She'll be your birthday/Christmas gift. BUT you can only order her once you've completed EVERYTHING.

      Me: OMG U SRS??

Mom: Yes. Once you are completely done. But don't tell your father about the real cost or you're on your own.

Me: Thank you, thank you, thank you!! XD *proceeds to power through blistering headache to complete entire remaining modules before midnight*

I think what won mom over, really, was the doll itself. My family likes them almost as much as I do. ^_^

    13. for me it went like this -_-

      1. preparation
-look at doll websites for more than 6 yearssss
      -save up birthday/scholarship money
-decide which one to get first from my 3 loves (T_T)
      2. determination
-ask dealer questions and basically promise to buy the doll that week
-tell my mum that i'm going to buy a doll for myself as a xmas present
      3. struggle
mum: what? that's stupid. you are not a kid. don't buy that, use your money for useful things
me: but i have the money and i wanted to have a doll since so long
mum: i don't let you buy one. also exchange rates now are blablabla
me: but it's my money and i can do whatever i want with it. i will buy the doll no matter what you say~
mum: then i will go to the bank and i will freeze your account.
      me: ??????????!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????!!!!!!!!!! you can't do that! O,@;;
mum: yes i can. you don't work yet so you have to save up for your future blablabla blaablaaa
-huge fight about how useless i am
      me: *cries*
me: write CV and show her.
me: so can i buy my doll now?
      mum: ................................................ fine
      4. waiting for doll
      -going crazy waiting ;;;

    14. My parents know nothing of my sweetheart ^u^ I just got jelly my friend got her first (a Doll Leaves' W) and since I've been eyeing BJD for two-three years, I looked in my wallet, saw enough money so I got one 8'D Also, the fact I'm now living alone in my small apartment to be close to my uni is very helpful. I went through so much stress trying to get my mom to leave from here so I could go to the bank, put the money in an account my mom knows nothing about and ordering my girlie =A=;;

    15. Man, people are having such success with begging for dolls from their parents/other people. I need to pick up on these begging tactics. xD

My mom knows quality and such, and she knows that a BJD is well worth the money and it would be something I would highly enjoy with making clothes for him [I want only boys], photography, and such. But all the dolls I want are $500 and mom doesn't like that. The cheapest one I want is around $300 and she still says no. D:
So I'd have to buy my own doll, but with my spending habits it wont happen for a long long time. But the good thing about my future dolls, is that I only want two [I don't really see a use for more than that in my world ^^;; ] so that will be good for my wallet...maybe. xD

But when I found my dream doll, I did this:
-*Goes on mom's computer and leaves the doll I want left open in her tab*
-*Explain to mom how this doll is important*
      -*beg*
      -*repeat first three steps*
      -Unsuccessful

    16. My parents are very, very frugal people, so I don't bother asking them, but my friend bought me my Elfdoll Hazy, it went something like this:

      Him:...Whatcha thinking about?
      Me:...Oh it's not important...
      Him: Tellmetellmetellmetellme!
Me:....Just thinking of this doll I want...
      Him: Show me?
Me: -sends link to Iplehouse Asa-
      Him:....O.O $600?!?!?!
      Me:...mhm....
Him:........................ok ok! I'll give you half the money now, and the other half later. Happy Birthday.
      Me:....YAY thankyouthankyouthankyou!

He disappeared not too long after that, so I decided to look around for another doll I truly wanted and BAM! Up pops Hazy, who was perfect for my main character. She came home a week later ^^.

    17. Reading you guys' experiences asking your parents for a doll is cracking me up! I'm 44 and am having very similar conversations with my inner parent... lol!! ;-) It's so hard to allow myself to spend the money! But I want one!!

    18. I got into it when my friend gave me the dream of doll link. She got hers there. And about 5-6 years later I finally ordered mine :) 02/02/2012. I used my tips from my job (2-3 months worth of tips) about $200 and asked my brother if I can use his credit card and he said yes as long as I pay the extra $209 with in a week or two which I did :) it was about $409 DOC Petsha w/ shipping. I don't have her just yet but I've started buying clothes for her XD

    19. I would never beg anyone to pay for my dolls. EVER.
I worked hard and earned money to get them. If I had a kid that nagged me about buying dolls for him/her I'd tell them to earn their own money for it, simple as that. Maybe give them part of the money it if was their birthday.

    20. Haha mine is simple against my parents. I say I'll pay them back and I do and always have. Thus they trust me when I say I will and will put down the money to pay for a doll and I pay them when I can n_n
