"PRETTY please?": the art of obtaining.

Apr 28, 2005

    1. Can't stop laughing reading some of the posts XD. My experience was more of:
Me:"Dad can I get this doll look how pretty she is!"
Dad:"Ok, let me just check it out....THEY COST HOW MUCH!?"
      Me:"Heh :sweat"
Dad:"No...I'm not paying that much for plastic."
      Me:"Resin...she's made out of resin..."
      Dad:"It's still a no!"
Me:"aw..." *slips away with a sad face then slowly peak my head over the counter watching my mom make dinner.*
Me:"Hey mom can i get this doll?" *holds up laptop*
      Mom:"Did you ask your dad?"
      Me:"...."
      Mom:"He said no didn't he?"
      Me::|
Mom:"I'll get it for you if you go clean out the basement and get all A's on your next report card."
and after many weeks of hard work and my brain exploding and leaking out of my ears from school XD Shetani soon arrived lol

    2. You know... I debated about it for ages (like, actual years), saved up, saved up... saved up. I figured once I had enough money I could tell my parents "so, I'm gonna get this expensive doll, you don't really get any say it because it's all my money" but I didn't have any regular income at the time, so that didn't really work.
And then I kinda brought it up for a birthday present idea totally expecting my parents to do that thing where they say "yeah sure" and then carefully avoid the subject until you forget... I was prepared to pay half, because that's what I had, but then they just bought it. No argument or anything, and when I tried to make my mom take what I had saved up she got mad at me.

      So yeah, that whole experience went awfully well. ...I'm definitely going to have to buy the next one, though. They're not aware that the doll I asked for was the very cheapest on my wishlist and they still refer to her as "incredibly expensive" >__>;

    3. LOL
I first saw BJDs at DragonCon 5 years ago. Knew I couldn't begin to afford them at the time. Last year, revisited the idea - because I was coming into $$$
So, I made a list, did research, & have been ordering dolls since LOL So addictive...
I'm telling you, those who've convinced parents/spouses of the necessity of having BJDs, my hat's off to you. My mom would NEVER have succumbed to pleas, etc.

    4. 1) went online searching for mummified fairies or something
      2) found bjd collectasy featuring bjds
      3) PERFECT
      4) search more, found DOA
      5) fell in love with Iplehouse
      6) talked with my mom about it non stop
      7) relented on the condition of good grades
      Conclusion: study to get dolls.

    5. I tried to avoid one because I snubbed at the expense. I would go to my friends place and enjoy the bjd there. Until one day online... I was hooked on one I saw surfing the net. Tried hard to forget about it. But nope, had to save and buy it. Now I have several dolls, even though I said that was it. Extremely wonderful works of art. I really enjoy them.

    6. My brother was nice enough to offer to buy me one for my birthday randomly. I had never intended to get one so soon because they were so expensive, and I thought I should wait til I get a good paying job before I 'blow money' on a doll. Never have I asked for one growing up, because I thought my family wouldn't be so open to the idea of a doll costing hundreds of dollars.

I guess my brother figured that because I owned porcelain dolls from the age of seven (And still have them all), and stared at BJD pictures off an on for several years, that this would be a good gift that I would actually treasure. ^__^

My first BJD may not be the most expensive, or prettiest, but I love her loads already. I'm thankful to be getting her. <3 She will not be the last~!

    7. For me, I first saw BJDs through my friends who collected them and slowly realized I wanted one.

I initially wanted a Fairyland pukipuki, but when I showed my boyfriend the clown pong pong he freaked, because he hates clowns.

The money wasn't a deterrent, because I'll pinch pennies to get what I want.

      First Doll:
Decide I want something a little larger but not child like.
See AoD's An, and really like the sculpt, but for a girl.
Boyfriend buys her, making it count as my birthday and x-mas present.

      Second Doll:
While waiting for her, fall in love with Cherishdoll's Demon Chubby, and flip out when I see that the sculpt is going to be discontinued. :(
See a tan Demon Chubby on the MP and show her to the boyfriend.
Agree to do all of his usual chores and give regular backrubs for pay.
Start a doll fund jar and mysteriously find extra cash in it randomly. (boyfriend is a sneaky sneaky man)
Buy tan chubby and do a little gimpy girl dance.

      Second Doll becomes First Doll:
Chubby arrives before An, and I love her so much.
An arrives, but by then I've gotten used to the tiny Justine, so I'm put off by her long legs and huge boobs.

      Third doll:
Start browsing again after 2 years and *really like* 5SD Super Edmund.
Ex husband (who doubles as mine and my boyfriend's bestie) says he owes me for years of neglected birthdays and Christmases.
Offers to by Edmund for me.
I tell him that's too much.
      He insists.
I make him get permission from the boyfriend.
Boyfriend tells me to stop being such a guilt-ridden Paladin.
      Ex-Hubby orders doll for me.
Expecting him in time for my May birthday!

    8. Haha I would never ask my mother to buy me a doll.... but that's because she bought me a fancy computer for me to art on. ;u; She buys me enough things for my art career that I don't feel right asking her to get me things that are essentially just glorified toys.

      The way it went for me was my friend, Elijahfeathers, kept showing me these things and eventually showed me some I really liked (iplehouse). And then Iplehouse came out with Isar..... and I couldn't resist, and Eli helped me buy her. ;u;

    9. `None of my parents did buy dolls for me . neither friends neither ex-bf's .

      as first
I fell in love with the AOD An because she was not to expensive and my parents agreed
after that i kept falling inlove i had Stars for a few months now since september and in febrauri i saw Raoul hows an long elf RS when he came to me i was like ''wow he is hugeee!'' and it was good for now so i dindt buy anymore dolls that year so like in december after my bday i wanted to order my third an AOD Meng ya qi , and damn it took an half year before she arrived ! but she is so pretty! and after that i waited 7 months for my next doll i saw her at a dutch marketplace and i really felt in love with this puki puki rose . i always saved for them never asked or get them . all by my own .

    10. I would never ask anyone to get me a doll. I just wouldn't feel comfortable asking family or friends for something so expensive. It just feels well, wrong. I feel much better paying for them from my own money.

    11. I've never asked my parents for a BJD and I don't know that I ever could. They already do so much for me that it wouldn't feel right for me, personally. I don't ask them before purchasing a doll since I'm 23 and it's my own money.
I've gotten all my dolls myself with work money, loan money (which isn't the best, I know...), or through trading my other dolls. Sometimes I spend too much and have to deal with the consequences, usually by selling some of my things. As long as I'm responsible my parents don't mind what I purchase, and they even show some interest on occasion!

    12. My process went like this:

      - Searching car parts on Google thanks to a 'I want to be a mechanic!' phase
      - Come across doll picture 'What on Earth... that's not a car. Pretty though!'
      - Research new discovery
      - Point dolls out to mother
      - Receive 1/6 poseable dolls, jointed regular dolls and action figures for birthdays etc. Feel joy.
      - Save up birthday and Christmas money
      - Fall in love with Dollzone MSDs
      - Parents help me chose a doll and show me how to pay for it
      - Entire family watches box opening
      - Everybody loves Ces
      - 5 years later, got extra money from work
      - Buy another DZ MSD

      :)

    13. I never asked for dolls or doll money. They are just too expensive and my parents would say no (after freaking out at the price for hours). Thankfully I'm in college so I'm away from the parents, and I have a seasonal job that pays for my hobby. Sometimes my boyfriend will make doll choices for me (mainly when I'm insisting on JUST buying a head), and buys the body for me since I only have enough for the head. He knows I will enjoy a full doll more, he just asks that I return the favor and buy him stuff he likes until we're even ;)

    14. WELL my parents would think i am insanely CRAZY to spend the amount on a doll.
      So, im your average seventeen year old teenager. What most fathers thinking "Loves shopping" So everything i would go shopping, i would ask my dad for money, then put that money towards my dolly and just not get anything. Then once every 6months, tell my dad i have a school project, and put that money towards my dollie, and just tell him ive been working on it at school. With my mother...well...she doesn't give me money -.-;

Sooner or later i got my first bjd HEAD(sd), then saved for a full doll(msd), didn't liked them anymore, so i sold them both, and now am currently putting that money towards my dream doll. a Soony c:

LOVED your story by the way!! c:

    15. Mine isn't Quite as exciting as some on here but here goes :)

      5 years ago:
-I was searching for small dolls on dA but a Volks BJD showed up and I was amazed! At first I thought they were no more than 10inches tall and when I saw how large and expensive they were I gave up entirely.

      3 years ago:
BJDs came up on my model horse forum because someone was creating a small one to ride her horses and through a search I stumbled on DoA.

      2 years ago:
After a year of thinking that they were still too large and expensive I finally decided to buy one but didn't know where the money was coming from until I got a larger than usual tax return :D

My first doll arrived within a week of when I ordered her and was in perfect condition. I was a nervous doll owner at first and was too intimidated to do much with her but now I lurv my dollies!

    16. My road to Dolloholism went something like this. . .

      - six or so years ago I was hugely in the cosplay and convention scene. I saw these pretty pretty dolls that people had, but figured they were really not what I wanted to be spending my money on. I would rather spend it on contacts and fangs and silk and boots. Yep.

      - Another year or two passes. . . I start to see even more of these beautiful dolls, I plot to maybe get one. Nothing comes of this, because I don’t really have the money all at once. Apparently I hadn’t met the Layaway monster yet.

      - Several more years, I start trying to make my own with paperclay. I get a head sculpt started up, but I figure I need a better reference. Nothing happens.

      - Last year. . . my friend decides she is going to finally go ahead and buy one. I also get the opportunity to help another friend dress her dolls whenever we’re hanging out. . . my resolve begins to crumble. The first friend gets me into DoA.

      - I get on DoA and ask around. . . this leads me to realize that there are way more realistic dolls than I had previously seen. I fall in love with Elfdoll’s Vivien head sculpt. 0_0. I decide I need this. . . I happen to get to go to convention in November and sell some of my accessories and hats. I buy said head.

      - I also find out about Mint on Card having “practice heads” from Doll Family A. . . I order one of these as well.

      - I proceed to search for the perfect bodies for said severed heads. The search continues for a while. In March I get a proper job and buy Hela (the MSD sized practice head) an AoD body. It gets here, I start making clothes 0_0. LOVE.

      - Iplehouse comes out with the nYID body. It is perfect for Charlie (the Vivien head). I put it on Layaway. . . aaand that’s where I am now. Almost ready to send payment #3.

Thankfully I haven’t had to convince a parent or significant other that these dolls are worth it. I just explained to my mother that I intend to make clothes and sell them, which will eventually pay for the massive cost. Plus, I’m getting my bills paid, so it all works out. . . .Except that my wishlist is about a mile long and filled with Iplehouse >_< WHY ARE THEY SO PRETTY!!!???

    17. For me I started wanting a bjd about six-seven years ago and it was five years ago that I first fell in love with two specific dolls and really wanted them and started talking to my Mom and other family members about how much I wanted the dolls. But I didn't have a job and had university bills and felt like it was too irresponsible so I had to wait.

I kept telling my Mom I was going to buy a doll for five years and apologizing for wanting to buy something so expensive until I finally had a well paying job and felt like I could afford to buy what I wanted. Of course one of those dolls isn't sold anymore so I won't be able to buy him unless they re-release him. But I don't regret it, I don't want my family to think of my hobby as an irresponsible purchase since even as an adult I love them a lot and value their opinion.

When I actually ordered the doll my mother's response was, "It's about time you actually ordered it, you've wanted it forever." And when I told her I'm going to buy more and was worried about my hobby being expensive she was just like..."It's your money you can do what you want...and your Dad can't say anything because he spends way more than that on his motorcycles."

I think I just have the type of personality that always feels guilty for spending money on myself...so in the end my own worse enemy was myself. But whenever I take pictures of him and hold him it makes me feel so incredibly happy that he's finally here with me. And I think with how much time I spend gushing about him and taking pictures of him in my free time nobody will try to accuse me of wasting money since they can see it's worth it to me.

    18. Mine was more like
      -Sees dolls
      -starts to like dolls
      -starts saving money
-gets seasonal job to save MORE
      -buys doll

My parents don't really care what I do with my money as long as I'm the one who worked for it.

    19. While I did not sell my soul to the devil, I was quite able to pull off a perfect execution.
My mother and I were in Austin, and both of us are doll lovers so we felt the need to visit doll shops (like we do on every trip we go on). We went to Kerby Lane where I met a Volks Sakura and fell in love. My mother, though thinking they were a bit on the expensive side, agreed to get me two dolls in the MSD size instead of a silver trumpet. So far I have received a Sakura, and someday I will get a Peakswood Punky Beetle. I have never regretted my decision, and my two dolls are the happier for it. (My father doesn't understand the love of dolls but can be reminded of the never-put-together ship replicas cluttering the garage.) It's worked out perfectly for me. Might I suggest offering to do something for the doll? Like some hated chore or work?

    20. It took me quite a while to convince my Mum to buy my first doll, Edmon. At the time I was studying art at school and insisted that a dollfie would make an excellent model because he's very polite and wouldn't mind sitting for hours while I sketch. I finally sealed the deal when I suggested that I get no Christmas presents and get the dollfie for my birthday (since it's pretty close to Christmas anyway). I paid for any extra's I wanted for him and began sewing clothes for him.

That was 4 years ago now and I've got a steady job and just purchased an Iplehouse Tania and she's on her way. It feels so much better to have saved up for her on my own, and I still love sewing my own style clothing and making jewelry ^^
