1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

"PRETTY please?": the art of obtaining.

Apr 28, 2005

    1. What a fun thread!!

      Okies...
-Go to an anime get together at a local comic store. See a girl dressed up as Risuka from Loveless, her doll as Soubi, I believe. Think they're kind of crazy. Promptly forget about it.
-Surfing FA, and bora_toki has pictures up of her sweethearts. Interest is piqued, is given DoA URL.
-Look, look, look. Nothing grabs, wanted anthro dolls instead of humans...
-Fairyland releases Pukisha fullset. Gen drools.
-$183 bucks for a basic.... ummm... Start dropping hints to then boyfriend (now fiancee).
      -He says no.
-Then relents, if I finish commissions, will have enough.
-I stay up all night finishing said commissions. Have $183 in Paypal. Go surfing DoA, click on news, see new doll.
-OHMYGOSHSHOES, WHAT IS THAT GIRL WITH THE HOOVES?! *heart goes Squeee!! Thoughts of Pukisha go out the window.
-Check price... $812 with shipping blank...
      -Boyfriend says NO.
      -I beg. He says no.
-I cry myself to sleep for three nights, scared to death about missing her, and knowing that if I did, I'd kick myself forever.
-Find out that Soom does layaway, and crazily enough... the first payment for said layaway is exactly $183.
-Boyfriend adjusts budget, and Gen's now on an allowance, but says she can get her as a combo birthday/Christmas present.
      -Gen squees, and orders.
-After two payments, suddenly a check appears from the college she is attending, money extra from current quarter's loans...in exactly the last two payments for doll.
      -PAID! Waiting....
-She comes 2 days after my birthday... Gen squees.

Kind of funny, my fiancee was all against them at first, calling them "$200 decorations" (in the Pukisha's case), and now he's adjusted the budget again to let me get another doll, calling the Beryl my birthday present and now the little one my "real Christmas present"... He even knows Jay's name and Lirael's mold... I love him... *happysigh*

    4. lol my steps aren't nearly as special, and they involve people who are excited that I still want to play with dolls instead of other 'debaucherous' stuff.

      - Randomly see a doll from Volks
      - Look it up, say 'oooh' then never look it up again
      - Several years later, get a job and make people proud
      - Keep said job, making people even more proud
      - See another pretty doll, look up site for said doll
      - Follow up with looking at other sites with other dolls
      - Fall in love with a DoD Twing-key
      - Realize you can actually get money to actually buy a BJD, conveniently a month before Christmas
      - Mention to family that you don't want clothes this year
      - Show grandma who believes you're actually on the Internet stripping for drugs (lol true story, I blame 20/20) what you're really up to
      - Grandma gets excited that your innocence has not actually been marred at all and happily ignores price and wants to help out
      - Everyone chips in to help buy first doll, with a GENEROUS donation from the grandma
      - Pay check comes in that very week
      - Buy doll as soon as money is deposited
      - Payment accepted, in time to get limited head
      - Dancing ensues

It's only been week 2 of my wait, and since it's a DoD bought around the holidays, I'm expecting a February-March wait (possibly February, because I didn't order a face up) but I don't care, my first BJD is finally on her way XD

    5. I got my first doll for christmas, when i first aked my mom i expected a lot of begging...but then she was weird.
Me: Can i get one? please, I'll help pay, they're really pretty, costumizabke and posable, it would be a fun hobby (i keep listing good things)
Mom: Sure, pick it ou and i'll buy it.
      Me: umm wait, what
it was a lot easier then i expected, I hope it will work for my birthday too =]

    6. I didn't tell my parents I was buying one. I don't think my dod knows. My mum didn't know untill she went in my room and found Trinity sitting on my desk.
      "And how much was she?"
      "Uh, worth it?"
*rolls eyes* "When are you getting her hair and clothes? She's a little naked if you haven't noticed."
      "I'm working on it!" >.<
      And that's how it happened.

    7. Mine was a
      -Sees gorgeous doll on DA
-Thinks gorgeous doll looks like her OC
-Sees doll is for sale (the price didn't faze me, my thought was "u__u I don't have $400....poo")
-Tries to forget about gorgeous dolls she doesn't think she'll be able to afford.
-Randomly finds Luts website whilst on the web one day. Sees Yder, falls madly in love.
-Informs mom she'll be buying a fully customizable, super spiffing doll. Starts saving.
-By end of year, eating my "last day o' school" dinner with dad and he says, "You're not still buying that $500 doll are you?" And I just told him, "It's my money, I worked for it, and this is something I really want. If it's a mistake, then I'll just learn from it and move on. But it's not a mistake."
-Camine ordered, family puts up with my excitement for the next two months until he gets home XD Dad is interested in his mechanics, and my mom thinks he's very pretty.
-Just this last December (this is where my family finally contributed to my hobby :)) I saw a fair-priced Dreamingdoll body in the Marketplace that I needed for my coming-soon Yeon-Ho head. I'm about $120 short, and I won't get the money in time for the body to still be available :( I NEVER ask my parents for money, so I stress about how I'm going to get the money for this body. Three days later, expecting a 'no', I come up to my mom asking if she could lend me $120, and swearing that I can pay it off before February. She says yes x___x Completely shocking me. Body ordered and arrived! I guess she knows how much I love Nikki :) And she realizes I'm serious about this hobby. I couldn't believe she lended me money...and for a DOLL no less!

      I'm almost done paying her back ^ ^ ~<3

    8. I love how I got my baby. XP

      - Find out friend is selling DZ Fei
      - Demand that she let me steal him so I can have a couple days to say goodbye
      - Fall in love
      - Ask dad for the doll as Christmas present
      - GET DOLL (though I had to pay back half of the two hundred dollars to buy Keli)

I couldn't have asked for anything better. I love Kelhiel with all my heart. C: lol My dad thinks dolls are a waste of money or whatever, but he likes to tease me about Keli and sometimes pick him up and play with him. It's pretty funny. Mm, I love my baby. *huggles Kelhiel*

    9. this is a pretty interesting thread...
      mine goes like this:

me: dad, can i have a doll? [can't say bjd, he doesn't know ]
      dad: uhhmmm...how much is it?
me: let's just say it's quite expensive...
dad: what does it look like? size?
      me: *shows D.O.T Shall*
      dad: how much is it?
me: uhm...$600 [[didn't say the exact price so i can buy clothes if ever he says yes]]
dad: if you have an A in geometry AND PE ...
      *moments of silence*
dad: and if we have money...then absolutely yes
me: i'll take that as a no...

      *dad turns around*

      dad: w-what?!
      me: nothing...

      [[ my geometry teacher sucks .... P.E. is hard... i can't believe my dad won't accept my B+ :...(:...(:...( ]]

      *still waiting for the results*
*and i really want my girl :...( *
*so i'll have to torture myself physically and mentally* *_*

    10. Expecting that's gonna be me...

    11. So easy. O_O

    12. You're almost there though.

    13. Lmao. xD

It took me MONTHS of pledding (sp) to get my DOD E-an, Lillith.
FIRST, I was on my hands and knees begging.
      No.
THEN, I was saying things like "...I'LL DO EVERYTHING I CAN TO PAY YOU BACK! I'LL EVEN LICK THE FLOORS CLEAN IF YOU MADE ME!" *Never would have happened*
      No.
THENNNN, I was so despirate (sp), that I would sing random songs about my doll REALLY LOUD in my parent's faces until they wanted to slap me.
      STILL NO.
LAST, I wasn't able to get hardly ANYTHING for Christmas but my doll, but I'm COMPLETELY fine with that.
Because now... I have my little Lillith! *Huggles her*
I also had to show them a MILLION other dolls to convice them that they were worth the money.
BUT THANK YOU BABY JESUS THAT MY BEGGING PAYED OFF! ^o^

    14. - 2003-2004ish. I'm at a convention. I see people with BJDs.
Boyfriend at the time thinks they're stupid and hates J-rock people and whines about them.
I quietly admire, but think they're a little overpriced and I wasn't into the Jrock thing... as those were the only people I saw with them.

      - 2006, friend has BJD and lets me "play" with it.
I'm all fascinated by the joints and the movement.
Also broke up with aforementioned boyfriend.

      - 2007, another friend gets a BJD named after a character we both love. She starts pic-spamming me.
I decide that I want one for my OC. But looking through Luts and Volks, nothing seemed to suit him.

      - 2008, someone contacts me about my avatar site, wanting help with theirs. It's BJD related. She starts sending me all kinds of pictures and different sites I didn't know about. I thought I'd really love to have one, but... nothing that stood out to me.
Around October, I stumbled across Soom's site and found Spinel. I decided that he would be PERFECT for my character and I begin a small savings for him.

      - 2009, I join here.
Tell mother that I want a $600 doll. She's taken back by the price and tells me that I don't need to buy it.
Go to Ohayocon. Get in the elevator. A dealer tells a random person about the convention since they asked. She said she sells BJDs.
I wander down to the dealer's room and hunt down said booth. Overhear the words "layaway plan".
Misses Pheonix Wright photoshoot. Obtains a AoD Juli.
Sister and Neice ask if I can claim my Neice on my income tax returns so that she can have some money for a car and some other bills. Neice can't find a job and has a kid. So because I'm the only one who works, I could do it.
I had 1/3 of the money, and with the amount I'd been saving for the Spinel, I went ahead and ordered him and put the rest in savings.
Now has 2 BJDs, and is tempted to ask crazy ex boyfriend if he would mind doing some resin casting for me so I can make special designed guns for my Spinel. 8D
Has not told parents about the actual cost. But they seem to like them a lot. Might get my mom a Bobobie MSD for Christmas.

After I get some stuff done with my home business, I'm going to start putting money away for another.

    15. It went like this,

      Four years ago:
-Found photos on a cosplay website.
      -Searched and fell in LOVE.
      -Couldn't afford it.

A year and a half ago:
-Went to an anime convention and saw some in person.
      -That was it.
      -I ordered one.
      -THEN told parents. Ohohohohohoh.

    16. My experience:

      - Last year in June read Aimee Steingberger's book Japan Ai and heard about Super Dollfies.
      - was curious and looked at Volks dolls online.
      - thought they were beautiful, but didn't see a mold I liked.
      - saw FCS database.
      - saw F-16 mold and knew it was PERFECT for the character I created!
      - went crazy looking at dolls on the internet (photoshoots).
      - saw a few other doll sites like Luts. STILL wanted an F-16.
      - Never told parents because I knew they'd never get me one.
      - Christmas approaches and parents cannot get me first choice Christmas gift.
      - Parents ask what would I like instead? I show them the doll.
      - They say okay. I have a near heart attack of shock.
      - So when we go to L.A. in early January to visit family I take some saved money along (parents paid for a third of doll = clothes) and go to the L.A. Sumika.
      - I order the F-16, and spent almost 2 hours describing the makeup cos I'm an awful perfectionist!
      - I reluctantly leave the pretty, doll-filled Volks store and visit relatives for some days and then go home.
      - expect to wait 3 months before doll comes.
      - Doll comes on Feb 16th, half the expected time! I have another near-heart attack of shock.
      - Dress Phyllis (my doll) and then go to creep out my big sister who's slightly doll-phobic with her.

    17. - get left home alone at night a lot as SO ran an online WOW cafe
-brows ebay for random things, try "goth dolls"
      - see CP Soo for sale
      -fall in love
      -google the doll
      -discover the webring
      -discover DoA
      -discover the Luts site
      -discover Hound
-call So and say "I am getting a $600 doll with my tax return"
      -say yes I AM
-repeat last step about 8 times
      -file taxes
      -buy doll
      -buy more dolls
      -buy SO a doll
      - buy HIM more dolls
      -buy still more dolls
-move overseas and whinge about missing my dolls
-get crappy job and say "if I have to do this job I am buying more dolls"
-hear SO say "of course you can, I love you and i know you miss them. I miss mine too"
-buy STILL more dolls and have mine shipped from home

err I think I went a bit far on this train of thought, but you get the picture

sorry SO just corrected me, it was not a WOW cafe, it was a LAN centre with with online interactive gaming capacity...as he plays Call of Duty online with friends in Australia. God help me *goes back to staring at new doll*

    18. -Sees my first BJD
      -wants BJD
-Discovers the price and forgets about it
      -Sees it again in person
      -Falls in love
      -Wants BJD again
      -Saving up but will probably spend money on more useful investments ;w;

i wouldn't dare tell my mom about them or their price lol.

    19. *sigh* I totally WISH there was some way to get the doll I want. I have my eye on Homme Ducan as my first doll. I asked my parents almost a year ago if I could get one. And, as usual, the answer was a flat out no. She threw at me that he was too expensive for a mere doll, and that it would be useless except for sitting on a shelf. She didn't seem to care at all that having him would get me interested in sewing, something she has been trying to get me to do for years! Even my grandmother, who is infamous for buying expensive crap for almost no reason, told me no. Needless to say I cried for hours.

NOW, I'm almost 21, so I'm going to try again. The 21st one has to be special right? And getting my Ducan will make it VERY special. Even if I have to pay a part of him myself, it will be worth it. *crosses fingers* I'm hoping I can get grandma to say yes this time around, because mom will never go for it. (unless I maybe throw at her that she made me give my kitten away, and she promised she would make it up to me one day *insert evil laughter*)

    20. My first doll isn't six hundred dollars. He's a blue latiboy so in total I paid about 400 dollars for him [ but I don't have him in my hands yet ; w; ]

I saved up about half of the money I needed for him by myself :'D so I suppose that helped a little bit. The conversation kind of went like

      Me: "Mummyyyyy..."
Mom: "...What do you want >.>"
Me: "Why would you assume I want something!?"
Mom: "Ha. What do you want."
Me: "Yanno how Ky [little sister] broke my ipod?"
      Mom: -glare- "Yes..."
Me: "And how I want an ipod touch for like...five hundred dollars?"
Mom: -more glaring- "What do you want?"
Me: "Instead of an ipod I want a doll!"
      Mom: "A doll..."
Me: "Yes he's like...super pretty!" -pulls up pictures, frantic pointing-
      Mom: "He?"
Me: "He's prettier than the girls :<"
      Mom: "How much is he?"
      Me: "welllllll...."
Mom: "How much?" -stern parental voice-
Me: "All together like four hundred dollars plus shipping???"
      Mom: "No."
      Me: "But I have half!"
      Mom: "I said no."
Me: "BUT CHAELA [close friend] IS GETTING ONE!"
      Mom: "..."
Me: "Chaela is getting Yern and I've liked them longer! That is totally not fair how could you be so cruel."
Mom: "You're a crazy little bitch."
      Me: "MOMMMM! D: '
Mom: "So...when will my grandson get here?"

I was like 'omfg yes!' lol. I usually have to bug and bug and bug. Even more so I just had my lip pierced when I decided to ask her so I'm surprised I didn't get that 'I just drove to another state to someone I trust to get a hole put in your face D<'

But lol yeah for me I'd rather get a smaller and cheaper doll as my first. I want DOD Ducan but I'd be so afraid to break him I'd never touch him.
