Puki popularity, something new?

Mar 15, 2008

    1. Well, I don't like Unoas either, so that makes two of us. (laughs) I am undecided about Pukis. I think I might like the smiley, shy-looking one enough to buy one, but I have a short list of tinies I want before considering one. Like all other dolls I buy, the popularity will probably wane before I get around to it, not that I care. I do wish all my other little ones posed as well.

    2. Lol, I bought my Puki in the very first batch of orders, so I guess before they became a so-called 'fad'. I think many people are like me, just enchanted by their adorable cuteness and amazing poseability. Their resin is wonderfully smooth, they have so many great faceplates and other options, and the price is not outrageous. What's not to love?? ;)

    3. I AM crazy about the little boots with wings.

    4. I actually waited to buy mine, because one of the girls here locally bought all 3 when they first came out... and I wanted to see and handle them first, to make sure they weren't like all of the other tinies I've had.

I think that's a big reason more are selling now... because people can see user pics, and hear user reviews... so that it's obvious that these little guys really can pose, and it's not just glorified company photographs.

    5. Nano is my only tiny. I got her in the second pre-order, and definately didn't think I was gonna be labeled in some kind of "fad" group.....

      :|

    6. Well here is where I speak up, although I was going to keep mum on this subject until I read a few things that ticked me off.

I don't go with "fads", and I don't give a rats rump if something is "popular" or not. I buy what I like. I would not buy something I DIDN'T like. Do people actually do that??

I happen to love tiny dolls. I had Naripons, which drive me nuts with their kicky legs. I saw the Pukis when they were introduced, but I held off ordering because the pics made them look too good to be true. Once I saw the owners pics I decided to get one. Now I have 3. I love them because they are tiny, they pose and don't have to be wired, and are content to ride in my pocket. But what I love most are their faces, the tiny pointed ears and kitty parts.

Cats have now surpassed dogs in the United States as being the most popular pet. Who doesn't love a kitten? That is what the Pukis remind me of, tiny baby kittens that will never grow up.

So no, I didn't buy my Pukis because "everyone" has them. Wouldn't it be nice if I had that kind of money to throw around.

I do not see the Pukis losing popularity in the future--in fact, I will predict as the company makes more sculpts they will become MORE popular.

    7. Ahaha something else we have in common! That is the only "extra" I got with mine. Those boots are murder.
Jenny, yes, some people do that. Some people are not very visual, so they need to be attracted by other's photos, and to be reassured that other people like it, so that they won't make a "mistake". That's the nice way of looking at it. And my mother always said, if you don't have something nice to say, you know the rest.

I really think the Pukis are special, amazing, innovative. That's what made them so popular.

    8. I buy dolls that I like, not what everyone else likes. If they appeal to me, I don't care if there are 5000 or 5 of them out there!
I think the Pukis are some of the most innovative dolls I have seen in a long time..their faces and posability are what impressed me. I have one in hand and two coming, and am thoroughly enjoying my little "friend".

    9. Ditto, Jenny... I was told years ago by a dealer when I started collecting "Barb&^%" dolls... "buy what you like"!!!

I usually wait to see what "real pics" people post of their dolls because they tend to look so much better than the promo pics. I also read the comments about the dolls also.

It did take me a while to get used to the PUKIs and their elf ears. What really swayed me for PUKIs is their wonderful balance, body poseability, and magnetic personalities (pun intended)!!

I saw them as a NEW concept in BJD bodies and I wanted no more kicky tinies.

Yes, PUKIs are here to stay!! IMHO.

    10. Did everyone see that the new minifee girl bodies have magnetic hands (and feet?) ... the Puki revolution spreads XD

    11. I love my three pukis as much as I love my Bermanns and Saints - they are just fantastic and if they are a fad, then better for us because it means they will stay affordable and we can look forward to more fun face molds! There is something so incredibly endearing about these dolls - the perfect engineering of their bodies, the magnetic feet and hands and plate, the childlike wonder of the expressive faceplates! I can hold one in my hand, or have one of them standing nearby and just be charmed into a place where there are no words adequate to express how they work their magic! And I think it's that "no words" place that makes them almost an artform - they really do tap into a childlike place where we all play, or into the same place we go where pictures of baby animals make us just shiver in delight!

      *adores*

    12. I can see the logic of thinking that, especially when you don't see the charm of something, but to put down $200 I would think people are a little more selective. I would think the doll must genuinely appeal to the person. You know, until very recently *less than a year ago* I never sold a doll I’ve owned. So every doll I buy, I buy thinking it will be with me forever. But now I am letting go of dolls I no longer play with or have the room for. It’s a good thing too. For someone else, the doll is brand new and exciting and it will get the attention it deserves again. But having said that, I still won’t buy anything I don’t think I want to keep forever. Never for a “Fad” I’m one of the people who don’t care nearly as much for Lati’s LOL. And I am one for posability. I love the faceplate options, but Momo also speaks to me because of the extreme poseability and those cute droopy ears! Also, it looks so much like the piki that I’d probably never get a piki, but a momo instead.
      Just my 2 cents :P

Oh, and please note, My question for this thread wasn't meant to imply an undeserved faddish craze, LOL. I believe most things that become popular (especially when it's advertised by users and not sold via commercialism) must be something that is truly special. So please, I never meant to imply anything negative about these cuties! Just wondered when and what came before "my time" that was also so exceptional!

      Thanks for understanding :)

    13. Just commenting from the point of someone brand new to bjds - I really appreciate that some dolls go through a stage of super popularity. I have no real experience with any of the different dolls, sizes, companies...So it is nice to have LOTS of feedback before committing to such a large purchase.

It isn't that I would buy something just because a bunch of people liked it, but I would be a bit more nervous about buying a doll that I hadn't heard anything about - good or bad. Maybe more experienced people could tell something from a company's website that I couldn't, but that is just a big decision to make on a small amount of information.

I have seen so many cute pictures of the pukis that I am definitely adding them to my wishlist - but I probably wouldn't have done so just based on the company's photos. Just my feelings

    14. Well I'm not a collector of tiny dolls per se. I have my sweet Cumi but she doesn't get played with often because she's hard to pose and I don't really have much in the way of clothes for her. Me bad mom, heh.

I was resisting getting a Puki until some dear friends 'enabled' me. Yeah, you know who you are. LOL! So I remained dubious about liking my Puki and then she came. My green fairy 'Absinthe' arrived on St. Paddy's Day. And I opened the box and fell in love with her immediately. Too cute . . . waaaaaaaaaay too CUTE!! :love

PS - yes, I may buy one more *knock on wood* So that she will have a playmate, natch!! ;)

    15. Er, ah, add me to the list. I don't like Unoas either. I am amazed they are so popular, but hey everyone has their own tastes. I am also not a fan of MSD Naraes either and I know I am outnumbered on that.

I was thinking of getting a Puki in the first grouping also, but I decided against spending the money at the time. I wanted one basically because of the name (personal joke). After seeing everyone having one, I have decided against getting one. I just don't like to have something that everyone under the sun seems to have although I do enjoy looking at pictures of them.

    16. I saw that and I can't wait! I hadn't thought about getting a Minifee because I've fallen in love with the Soulkids, but after seeing the new body, I am going to get a Mini Lishe one the new body. I'm really excited about the direction Fairyland is going and to think it all started with a Puki:)

    17. I was enabled and gifted with my Puki, Rolo. My heart took wings and flew with joy. I love him. I am saving slowly for another. I rarely buy more than one doll from a company, Tinybear is my exception. I found all of hers irresistble!!

I would also like a Momo. I can't part with any of my tinies even if they kick and flop. Each one was bought because I loved something about them. I have swapped some, but they were never the really tiny ones. These are beyond pocketable! They wormed their way into my heart and are staying!!!

    18. My Puki just shipped; she will actually be my fist bjd.
If I am jumping on a trend bandwagon, I did it unknowingly. I was admiring pictures of them posted by Linda Gavin at Flickr without really realizing what they were, whether they were popular, or anything. It was her stop-motion films that decided me - it was like seeing the Pukis in motion, in person. I was attracted to Pukis mostly by their poseability.

And oddly, enough, I've tended to be a bit leery of super-cute dolls ... one of the reasons bjd's have been off my radar for so long. The Puki I ordered seemed to be, to me, not as sweet-cute as some other dolls, like the Latis. The danger, of course, is desensitization: now that I'm comfortable with a Puki-level of cuteness, I find myself looking at Latis a bit more than I used to. Uh oh!

    19. Well, I just bought my first Puki because they are so popular. When they came out, I didn't give them more than a quick look see, they are too tiny for my hands to manage, (I love tinies, but age and other issues are winning and I have sold my tinies, sadly), and their faces didnt' really do anything for me. Too cutesy or something. It was all the pictures of their amazing poses, that and curiosity got the better of me! A Piki popped up in the Marketplace, and I was lucky enough to buy her, so fingers crossed, I can finally have a tiny size that I can actually play with. Hooray for popularity, and I can't wait to get my little Piki!

    20. I for one am not buying a Puki just because everyone else has one. I was around when they came out, and the first time I saw the little Puki Sugar, I wanted her. In fact, I was debating on getting the limited Sugar or the Kid Delf Cherry that I wanted. In the end, I chose the larger doll, and am saving up for a little Puki :D
I've looked around at the tinies that are in the market, and while the Lati's are cute, I don't much like how their bodies aren't really in proportion to their heads. A lot of tinies have really big heads, and immensely tiny hands and bodies. The Pukis however, are pretty proportionate, and the posing is just amazing :D [from pictures I've seen xD]
Also, I really like the sculpts of the bodies, and it is one of the reasons I want to eventually buy an A-Line body for my KDF. :D
