Really, Dollmore? Blatant Kuroshitsuji rip-off

Apr 7, 2009

    1. Ciels is cuter. <3

    2. So a rip-off series is getting ripped-off. Well then.

    3. No issues with this, it happens all the time. Plus I need that outfit for a doll I probably won't even have for another year XD

    4. Personally, I see it kind of like cosplay. People sell cosplay all the time and I'm pretty sure the companies the costume is taken from aren't profiting from it. That, and a LOT of doll clothes (for any kind of doll, not just bjd's) are inspired (or stolen) from mainstream fashion so it's not that surprising.

True, though, I would definitely agree with the fact that they are saying it's a 'My Fair Lady' inspired instead of a 'Kuroshitsuji' inspired is a bit irksome but maybe there are different copyrights surrounding one over the other which is why they did that?

Either way, I still think it is just too cute and I would prolly buy it if I wasn't broke! : )

    5. it's not just similar, it is the same one, the bows, frills... I don't really know if they have permission to do it or they are just not caring about using someone's design... trouble comes if they claim it as their own.

    6. I'm curious as to what makes you call Kuroshitsuji a "rip-off series."

    7. I wonder if it's considered copyrighting or cosplaying XP

    8. Well, let me put it this way. If somebody popped over to my manga shelf, and put Hellsing in a blender with Count Cain/Godchild... Kuroshitsuji would probably be what comes out.

So yes. I would call it a rip-off series.

So, really, I too can't care about what Dollmore does. :)

    9. If we talk about outfit's design, then we should remember outfit designs are not protected by copyright law. Sewing pattern is but not the design. Just so you know.

    10. I also want to remind you guys that copyright laws are different around the world than they are in the US. In the US, something like this probably wouldn't be tolerated. However in other parts of the world, licensing is very different.

    11. Actually it is "tolerated" in USA. I say "tolerated" because it's law, it's not something to tolerate or not. You can read a very interesting article about this here: http://www.newmediarights.org/business_models/artist/can_you_copyright_clothing_designs . I'm not sure if it's not against DoA rules to post it but I do think it's related and interesting. Read whole article to understand the issue.

And while it might feel wrong that someone can simply copy your piece of clothing, there's nothing you can do about it. On the other hand, imagine those wars among designers if clothing designs were protected... fighting over a lace on your top. Kind of ridiculous.

    12. It's not illegal to design a dress in a certain style. School uniforms, lolita dresses, suits etc. are all "rip-offs", and a lot look very similar to ones in animes and real life, and honestly, if I was a Kuroshitsuji fan, I'd probably buy this.

I'd love a decent cosplay costume for my upcoming doll, it's just a shame I like very few "popular" animes.

    13. I have a manga on my shelf about a rich, spoiled Victorian aristocrat prowling London to solve mysteries with his evil butler who holds dark secrets, a blond abuse-case psycho, undead dolls and secret organizations. And it's not Black Butler.

    14. Now if they'd just make Trauma Team/Center stuff...I'd drop over 100 dollars easy. :sweat

    15. Not to mention the traumatic past/childhood (I'm pretty sure I know which series you mean, and in that case, I have it too). I wouldn't quite call BB rip-off though, but I don't quite see the point of all those exclaiming about how "original" it is.

I do see the point of this being a blatant case of copying, but then again, who doesn't actually do it? There are lots of highly credited shops selling cosplays, and I've seen quite a couple of them not even mentioning which series the outfits are from.
I guess it would only be a real problem if the author minds it, and as far as I've experienced and read, most see cosplays/works based off their works as compliments rather than insults.

    16. I only call it a blatant rip-off to make a point; realistically speaking, my arguemnt is there is not way Yana Toboso has not read KAori Yuki's work and drawn...very...heavily from it.

To be OT, I'm not sure how I feel about this in general. On the one hand, people sell cosplay aaall the time or make their own, and no one gets their knickers in a twist

    17. Yeah, I completely agree with that. I had a longer discussion with a friend and fellow Kaori Yuki fan about it, and we both had to agree that Yana was heavily influenced by her. I honestly prefer Cain Saga/Godchild over BB, but that's probably because I've been a fan of Kaori Yuki for way long. I don't really think it's her best series though.

I don't quite know how I feel either. I don't see it as worse than selling cosplays, but then again, oftenly the cosplay-community will make and sell outfits from series from authors who've explicitly stated they don't want any cosplays to be made (i.e. Riyoko Ikeda). I don't really find that to be okay.
Also, I know that if I wrote a comic and someone made a cosplay off of one of my characters, I would be seriously flattered, but if that person started mass-producing and selling the outfit, I wouldn't really be okay with it.
I also don't like the lack of credit from Dollmore's side, but then again, I've discovered way many more cosplay-shops which also give no credit at all, so Dollmore is far from alone, in that regard.

    18. Oh, I wouldn't call it her best either. In all actuality, I care very little for the plot at all, and just enjoy psychoanalyzing heeer blond abuse-case psycho.

Hmm...I hadn't hear about an author asking such a thing before. I suppose it's rather like Anne Rice not allowing fanfiction of her work. And I think such requests should be honored. And I too agree with what you described, if I was in that situation. But it's like what somene else said; would giving her credit really CHANGE anything?

    19. I'm kind of sad the dress no longer exists lol Ciel's dress was very pretty.

On a side note, Godchild<3 since everyone else seems to be talking about it

    20. You didn't mention that the shinigami and their implied celestial bureaucracy are obviously way too similar to Yami no Matsuei's and I have my suspicions that Soma is a riff on Hakim from Kaoru Mori's Emma :P And besides, the current arc is so Harry Potter it hurts.

But I still love Kuroshitsuji, in a lulzy kind of way. It helps that I'm also a fan of all the things it's been, uh, loaning from.
