Reasons for Doll Sexuality

Jan 14, 2010

    1. This is why I like the MSD sized dolls.. it's all about them being cute ;)

    2. I only have one het doll. All my others are either gay or bi. My only two girls are also a couple.

The reason... I'm not sure. I was into BL long before I even knew BJD existed, so I suppose it's only natural. Besides, I'm into the LGBQ community.

    3. Similar to vicemage the sexual orientation of my dolls is really about how the characters evolved. Almost all my dolls are avatars of my original characters, so the dolls "adopted" the sexuality of the character they are meant to represent.

among the "adults" in my resin household I have three heterosexual couples, two straight guys, a single straight girl, a male gay couple and a single gay guy. I also have a number of bisexual characters.

My bisexual characters may be somewhat different in that they're aliens and their entire race is bisexual. Three of these are involved in a male x male x female relationship (which is fairly normal on their planet).

    4. I don't have a sexuality for my girl yet since I don't have her and nothing is concrete until I do. I can definitely see her being either bisexual or lesbian. Mostly because boy dolls don't interest me so I may end up with an all girl house hold. Dolly L-Word! :D

    5. I wonder if the style of male BJDs has anything to do with a lot of the BL/yaoi fans in the hobby? I gotta admit some of the BJD males look like they popped out of a classic BL/Yaoi manga with their 'bishounen' good looks. Not to say that gay men don't run the spectrum of looks, but most Yaoi comics I come across have art of very effeminate looking men.

    6. Indeed. Most of them actually. Certain companies even promote a sort of BL thing between their dolls, like Ringdoll and Crobidoll..... oh, and Doll Clans too.

    7. @Saaya-chan: That's totally true! I didn't even think about that but I've come across a lot of promo's that kind of cater to BL/Yaoi lovers via promos. Switch had a little story booklet that came with my Milhwa that was a dramatic little love story with the other boy they released~ > : } Also, considering that many of these companies are based in Asia, and most Yaoi/BL comics I've read come from Asia I think there's an easier chance that I'll come across BJDs while exploring my other interests. There's a reason you see more BJDs popping up at anime-cons than let's say a SciFi con.

    8. I remember Googling around on this topic awhile back. yaoi and such is SOOOO POPULAR but I haven't really found a good answer but there are some great theories.

I personally prefer to see yuri and I'd loooove to have a yuri couple. I prefer it because 1) it's rarer. 2) I don't find yaoi appealing at all.

I don't have anything against boy/boy. I am asexual with a non sexual attraction to women, so it's only natural that I prefer girl/girl :)

I'd LOVE to have a girl/girl couple some day and I'd love to see/hear about any girl/girl dollies out there, especially just romantic relationships.

As for my doll's sexualities... I made my minifee the same as me, since it's a recent discovery about myself and I wanted to express it somehow. And it seems to fit her :)

My other doll is an android that used to be human but I think she liked boys before she was changed.

My new doll coming in? Not sure yet :)

    9. Why wouldn't there be gay couples? Most mainstream media is utterly lacking in gay characters who get to be real, complicated people instead of just walking caricatures of their sexuality, and I think it's really nice that the BJD community is more diverse. It probably seems like "incredibly many" because you're used to seeing zero.

All my dolls, ladies and gents, are queer. Because I am. Simple as that.

    10. Heh kittydorkdork, I'm right there with ya :)

Of my currently seven dolls six are in the same storyline. Four of them have been hanging out in my headspace for the past 18 years and have always been the way they are (straight / bi / gay). The only guy dolls I have so far are straight and the significant others of my two straight girls. My two other girls are lesbian and bi respectively and they're a couple too (for parts of the story, anyway). I'm not currently planning any more gay couples, but a boyXboy couple might happen at some point. (So might more yuri couples - mainly because I find girls easier to shell :sweat Most male sculpts I like are in the 70+ range, which is too large for me.)

tl;dr: My only gay couple is female, because the characters have always been that way. :)

    11. I have 3 BJD couples, 2 straight and 1 gay male pairing. Initially one of the men in the gay couple was meant to be a woman but when he arrived he was most definitely a guy in my mind. My best friend is gay and I'm quite open minded about it in people so I saw no reason to deprive my other doll of a partner just because he wasn't a woman. I have a tendency to pair things up (dolls, Sims, salt and pepper shakers) so that might explain why. On the other side of things I'm somewhat of a hypocrite because I don't think I'd own a female doll couple: not because I'm against it in real life but because I'm very strongly heterosexual and see much more appeal in men and thus are more interested in male dolls. I do own female dolls because I recognize the worth in their characters and it's nice to put someone in a dress but ultimately my brain is wired to just find men more interesting.

    12. Most of my dolls are genderblind or asexual. I don't dictate their love lives. I will pair them up sometimes if of the same company but usually those are platonic work related relationships. They could technically bud into something more but I usually don't pursue it. My own love life is complicated enough. Adding the drama juice that is romance isn't something I want for my dolls since their purpose is mainly to be soothing and a delight to the eyes.

    13. Of my characters I have developed:
Finch - Gay (in a relationship with Fly, both female)
Fly - Gay (in a relationship with Finch, both female)
      Ruki - Gay (Single)
Saber - Genderfluid + Pansexual (Single)
      Zarafi - Asexual, heteroromatic (Single)
      Tobias - Asexual, Aromantic (Single)
Melba - Straight? (She's young so idk)

    14. I'd say that my personal reply would be very similar to yours. I haven't received my first doll yet and don't think I can decide her sexuality just yet. But although I'm not attracted to women IRL, I like the thought of my characters being girlXgirl. I find it cute - and maybe the rarity of such couple seems appealing to me as well. I could go for bi-sexual, I guess.
But if I EVER were to get a male BJD, he would instantly become the partner to one of my females. For some reason I don't find an interest in male dolls, so I would probably never buy one unless he was meant to be in love with one of my females.
Otherwise I'd go for females only, and there is bound to be love between many of them ^_^

    15. I have a mixture of gay, bisexual and straight relationships amongst my characters. All of them developed organically through interacting with the characters. The vast majority of my dolls don't have any defined sexuality due to not being in a relationship (and not having any known past relationships).

Things are a bit complicated by the fact that, in my fictional world, there is no stigma against homosexuality or bisexuality but there is a strong stigma against openly expressing affection. The state has already dismantled the concept of 'families' (with children being fostered in state homes, rather than raised by their birth parents), and romanticism and affection are viewed as frivolous and indulgent. Most of my 'couples' are actually just characters who are attracted to each other in a platonic way, rather than sexually involved or bonded in a long-term relationship.

    16. As a woman who has been in a same-sex relationship for almost a quarter of a century, I think I can say safely that I am the farthest thing from homophobic you can get. That having been said, I do not currently have any same-sex couples among my dolls because it simply hasn't worked out that way. I have two het couples (Johnny/Chaeri and Joe/Miyae) and three unattached girls. (Although I personally have my suspicions about Megumi and Belle being interested in each other, but they will neither confirm nor deny.)

    17. Most of my dolls were characters before I bought the doll to shell the character also (apart from some dolls I fell in love with but still found a character for before I bought the doll; only exception being my Switch Kiri xD; )

I am certainly a yaoi fan, but not a "huge" one. My friend is also a yaoi fan so that might be the reason why the majority of our dolls are gay men (or bi / pan but still in a same - sex relationship). We have a lot of hetero couples too (mostly because I love girl dolls but my friend has a preference to boy dolls) and we have a couple lesbians too (mostly our DDs...I don't think we have hetero DDs lol!). We generally try to not have " too many " and strive for diversity so it won't get boring with so many dolls LOL!

    18. I gave up on striving for diversity. :XD: My husband just rolls his eyes and makes a comment on why don't I have any het couples. It just didn't work out that way. Sorry dearie, the dolls had other ideas! (He's actually surprised there aren't more male/male couples here, knowing what kind of manga I tend to read besides shounen/seinen. I can fix that once I have more cash, though. ;))

    19. I'm the same. If I do ever get a male doll he will probably become interested in my female doll. Maybe a love triangle going where my favorite female is the object of desire from a female doll and a male doll and she is a wing nut and continually leads both parties on but never truly settles. Or just get a female doll and dress her very "boyish". I've always found the "fem-butch" lesbian relationships appealing.

Gah, I still have no idea until I meet my girl!! I'm already having lots of backstory and character development swirling around in my head but I don't think I will truly know until she is here :).

    20. I've never really been into BL/GL manga or anything, but my doll ended up being in a lesbian relationship. I think she's actually more genderblind, and the other doll that I'm getting is a definitive lesbian, but it just kind of worked out that way with their characters :sweat It wasn't that I was aiming for it to be that way from the beginning. I would consider their relationship more romantic than sexual though.
