Seeing the doll that you love in gore mod, how to you act?

Feb 27, 2010

    1. I love well-done (ie obviously not just slapped-on) gore mods; I really want to make a doll with a Glasglow grin one of these days. I've seen plenty of my favorite sculpts with gore modifications and I honestly don't see an issue with it. It's someone else's doll and they are allowed to do whatever they want to it. The beauty of this hobby is that it allows for a wide degree of artistic freedom; just because I want to make a specific dollsculpt a cutesy boy band member type doesn't mean another person has to!

    2. While I would never want own a gore mod, I have no issue with them. The owner can do whatever s/he likes with their doll, why on earth should I be allowed to say "NO" or be upset?? Unless they were copying my character then I see no reason why using the same sculpt should be an issue. If they DID use my character, I'd be furious, not because of the gore, but because of them stealing my character!

Gore mod on the same sculpt, though....to me, it's really no different than a different faceup on the same sculpt. Unless you make your own doll, others are going to have the same sculpt as you, and you can't dictate what they do with it. If you find it gross or offensive...don't look.

    3. Gore mods are a little too violent for me. I don't like looking at them, and if I saw my own doll's face, I might be a tad sad. But the hair and eyes would probably be different so maybe I could distance myself from the picture.

    4. People can do what they want with their dolls, but when it comes to sculpts that I really like? I'm pretty overcritical, so I'll always think the way they style said sculpt is insulting and they have no taste whatsoever. Doing gore modification is overkill though, so if there is an Iplehouse Asa that was made to look like Spawn or a Japanese burn victim, I don't want to see it. I think gorey mods can be cool, seeing as there's truly no limit to what you can do, but like most everyone else who's responded, not my glass of coke.

    5. For me it's not about type of modification but it's quality. Even elven ears can be horrifying if made by someone who lack of skills. But I will enjoy every modification if it's done nicely. Look at this doll, isn't she pretty in her unique way?

    6. I've never seen one, but it wouldn't hurt me. It's a different doll with a different name and personality. It would affect me at all.

    7. Well, first of all, I am not into gore. Too many scars makes me snarl already, so you can imagine what a heavy burn injury will make my face looks like. I always feel that gore mod actually destroys the doll (well, to some point, it is). However, there are some exceptions for a wonderful gore mod, if the customizer has skill. I know that several mold needs a lot of work and advanced skill. I respect that because I can't do that! And this, to some point, makes me to be able to enjoy the gore mod. *although mostly I will snarl XD* But this is just pure preference.

I know it is not my doll, the owner has full right to customize their doll. But somehow if I see the mold I like being customized in gore style, somehow I pity the modded doll. Their body or face must be damaged to a point where it can be called a gore mod. But I will go with Schel. It will make me snarl even more to see a sculpt I like with a really ugly face up (or those I don't like) >.< It makes me feel like saying to the owner, "Give him/her to me! I will faceup him/her for free!! >.<" Haha

*well, my faceup is not the best, but I think it is not that ugly either...my first faceup is also ugly, haha*

    8. I absolutely love a well-done gore mod, so coming across a gore mod in one of my favorite sculpts is very intriguing!! It's always interesting to see what other people are doing with a particular mold, especially if it's something done by a talented artist and modifier. So yeah, it's awesome to me.

    9. I saw a DOD Zen once in gore mod (he's my beloved doll) and I thought: COOL! seriously, it was indeed very cool XDD he didn't even have a smile, his mouth was modified and I really loved seeing the same sculpt turned into something totally different, when it's well done.

    10. I actually felt like I was gonna throw up when I stumbled upon my first gore mod and wondered: "Who would do that to that poor doll? Poor little thing..." It was a Bobobie Isabella a doll I was saving up for at the time. I thought "Man that is one SICK puppy..." And generally I find gore mods disturbing. I just don't like how they look a lot of times the ones I've seen go too far to get the gross factor. I thought one was cleverly done....Cause I didn't realize that 'corset' was the doll's ribcage until I realize it was ribbons and bones....

      On a yo-sd.

I really hate gore mods...Mainly cause I know where a lot of things are supposed to go and sometimes I see the terribly done ones too....I just don't like seeing them especially with dolls I'm considering getting. It can be a turn off y'know? But if someone wants to do it go ahead I don't give a crap just don't make me look at it.

    11. I don't mind gore mods when they're well done, as long as there's a warning when people are showing them off since I'm not always in the mood to look at those things (I think the general realism of BJD's adds to the creepiness of gore mods). But it wouldn't sicken me to see a nicely done mod on a sculpt I liked/owned, it certainly wouldn't change my opinion of the mold except to show that it has that much more potential. I love seeing people branch out from the norm and do something extremely unusual with a mold, whether it's a mold that I happen to love or not.

    12. oooooh what a delicious thought....Dollzone Edward with some extreme gore-modding? Absolutely. I adore gore-modding, the more extreme, the more appealing. I'd love to see what creative things they could do to a DZ Edward.

    13. I would probably be excited, if the mod was well-done. I am a horror fan, though...

    14. It would be interesting to see, I guess. But wanting my doll to be gore too? Not really. :sweat

    15. i look at my dolls as art. and everyone has their own take on art and what appeals to them. so it doesn't bother me so much as i just look at it as an interpretation and what the basic idea behind it was. some of the back stories of these dolls are so elaborate that you have to have the "hats off" attitude when you see the doll they created that brought their imagination to life.

    16. Personally, it horrifies me to see any doll that's poorly modded--or even has a poorly done faceup. Seeing those dolls in person makes me feel so bad for them, like their owners don't love them enough to put quality in to them. :( ( Although I know that's not the case, often those owners put a lot of time in to their doll, but it's just not to my tastes/perfectionism )

So on that note of things... I don't mind seeing gore mods on dolls I like, as long as it's well done. :) Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I think it's fine if you want to mod your doll that way--but please take the time to make it look right!

    17. The only other person I live with is my husband who rarely looks at what I do on the computer, so I'm not really worried about it. If I were to see a sculpt I own in a gore mod, I might be a little freaked out by the mod itself (I'm not much of a gore fan) but it wouldn't effect the way I view the doll.

    18. I don't like gore modding. I try to click past it or avoid it altogether. Seeing one of my girls like that would make me sad. :(

    19. Being a morbid person, I like gore mods. I do wince a little when I see one on the dolls that I like though, because most of my favorite dolls are smiling dolls. I'd have a hard time liking a gore mod if it were on a doll like Pukifee Pongpong, or on some of the Angel of Dream heads.

My Dream of Doll Elf Kirill is a different story. He has fangs showing, suggesting a vampire or werewolf linage. For a doll like that I think gore mods would be appropriate, because it would suggest that the character has been in a fight or a battle...and won. So for me it depends on the doll.

    20. The shock factor will certainly be there, but I can also appriciate the craftsmanship that goes into a well-done mod. I don't think it's anyone's place to judge what someone else does with their dolls, there's more than enough of that going on from outside of the hobby as it is. But I also think RagingMoon makes a great point - some dolls are definitley more appropriate than others. Something about those sorts of mods on the younger-looking dolls is simply unsettling.
