Seeing the doll that you love in gore mod, how to you act?

Feb 27, 2010

    1. My initial reaction, like many other peoples, is "NOOOOOOOO WHY YOU DO DISSSS?! D'8". Mostly because I loved the doll the way it was. Then I go "ONOES NOW IF YOU WANT TO SELL IT THERE'S A LESSER CHANCE OF SOMEONE BUYING IT" because I'm very money-oriented (one thing I love about dolls is that you can generally sell it to someone for what you paid for it). After that I take a deep breath, step back, and go "huh, that's actually really well done, this person is quite skilled" and am able to appreciate it for what it is. =3

    2. I think it depends on the type of gore, really. If it looks really, really cool. I might be like "Dude! That's sweet!" But if it's not done all that well.. I might not be a fan so much.

    3. I'm not a huge fan of gore mods, if it's really well done then I'd be impressed by it, but I've seen some dolls that are on my wishlist in gore mod so many times I wonder if they aren't a favorite for gore modders, so much in that I feel sort of sad and want to get one of the dolls even more in the sense I'd be feeling that I'd be rescuing it from a gore mod.

    4. I don't really care tbh. Could be because I've never seen dolls I really omg love gore modded, but hopefully it's because I don't really mind what other people do with their dolls.

I like interesting gore mods. There was a breakaway head that took me by surprise because it was a pretty original idea :D It's just that certain things like scars over the eyes, burns on the face/body, they're starting to be 'same'y to me. It's probably just me.

    5. As long as its awesome its okay. I have a DOD Camine and was looking for pix of other owners Camines...i came a cross a mod thread where my same cute boi was modded up and had a scary cyborg look, kinda like terminator. It was awesome! I so would love to do that but i dont have the skill for sculpting like the artisd did.

    6. I personally really dislike gore mods, for the most part. Especially ones where they basically destroy the doll, burn it, cut chunks out of it....To me, that changes the doll so much that there would be nothing really left of the original sculpt. I do like the darker aesthetics. Seeing one of my dolls with severe scarring done in a non-carved medium probably wouldn't bother me. But there is a limit for it, with me, as with all things.

    7. I may be coming from the other side since half of my collection has horror/gore mods, but I can see where any extensive mods would make a doll owner's heart skip a beat. Modding itself is a scary looking process when you see the pictures in between "before & after". When I post pics of my mod processes I get a lot of comments saying "I was doubtful at first but now he/she looks great" because of photos of hacked away resin and unpainted epoxy causing doubt. Even I look at my in progress dolls and wander if I went too far. In the end it all works out because in order for my characters to be fully what I envisioned, I have to take the risk. At that point, resale value and others' opinions aren't a big issue because I finally achieved the perfect miniature embodiment of a beloved OC. :) Though I can't help but think what the former owners of my dolls think of what I've done to their old doll...

Anyway, one of the most personal mods I ever worked on was a gore mod for someone else's doll. The reason I felt it very personal was because his owner told me the stories behind all of his scars and injuries and I felt more connected to his "trials". Granted, he was still just a doll, but I think many of us here who have created dolls into our characters know they become more than that. And I think that's why some owners can appreciate a gore mod on a similar doll is because they see the importance of the mod to the individual character.

    8. I think my family is going to be fine with that but they might tease me. I think as long as the gore mod is not too over, then it should be ok.

    9. It really depends on the mod.
Most of gore mods are bad made or too much. Some scars (like Glorydolls, Unidoll Jace dark magician, fairyland breakaway,etc...) are nice. But I don`t want to see rotting flesh/resin >.>
I am really suffering, when I see Jace as Snape- or as Draq queen ^^.

    10. I couldn't do it. Even if I tolerate gore mods on other people's dolls, I could not bear to see my own little precious girl in gore. It would break my heart. I wouldn't even consider it.

    11. I would not care. Its better to see gore mod done on mold I like that always seeing the same hair/eyes/faceup combo that look lame

    12. I was shocked but it made me love him like 10 times more than I did before c:

    13. Actually, my parents are surprised I haven't done this yet... I love zombies and all things slimy and goopy, so I think it would be spectacular to see gore mods of the dolls I have, whether they are temporary or permanent. I don't think I would do permanent mods to my dolls, simply because I don't trust my skill and would not want to have the dolls stuck that way. (Also, I made a little girl in Wal-Mart cry when I was in college and carrying my Alien action figure on my shoulder; so, I'm a little wary of impressionable children's responses). That said, I did just buy a pair of Jungatoy skulls so that I could have zombie versions of my 70cm DZ Yuu and his coming-lady friend (DM Lasia, I hope!) without damaging or altering the dolls actual heads. SO HAPPY!

    14. I'd love to see a gore mod of my favorite mold. I'm not really into the gore thing, but some the things people are able to do to make a doll look so completely different is amazing to me.

I don't think what I want for my doll is considered gory but the character has lost both of his arms and they were stitched back on. When I want to portray him realistically, I'd have to take his arms off in different places because there's no way to actually re-attach limbs like that.

    15. Oh gosh. That thought never crossed my mind.
I'm not into the whole gore thing. I've seen some wellmade and not too heavy gore mods that I liked, but I'd never do them to my own dolls or buy a gore doll. It's just not my style, but I let everyone be.
But if I saw one of the molds I own in gore-form... oh god, I don't know how I'd react. I'd say nothing to the owner, because, why would I? It's not their fault that I have that same sculpt and don't like what's being done with it.
But hell, I would be shocked. And I'd click away right away and probably have nightmares.
I definitely wouldn't willingly look at a gore mod of one of the sculpts I own/want.

    16. Throw up I guess? I strongly dislike gore (imagine if what you do to your dolls are accurate representations of your deepest desire:?). Then I will try my best to remove that terrible image. But that's hard cos I have excellent memory and then because the more I think about it, the harder it will be to forget. So I will cry my eyes out (some gore themed dolls don't have eyes I know).

    17. But that isn't always the case, so please don't fear for the gore fans. I don't own any gore modded dolls, but as someone who really does like horror films (bring on the undead!), I can understand the appeal and it does not stem from a desire to chop people up into small pieces or roam the country side in search of brains to eat ;)

    18. I love gore. I live for horror and gothicy apperances. I love monsters, vampires, and zombies. While MY dolls will never have the appearance of a monster or a zombie, etc, (My dolls are all characters out of my novel, which is far from a monster/vampire/horror story ^^;] I LOVE seeing dolls that look this way. I actually have considered getting a tiny to look like a monster.

If I saw a sculpt that I had in gore mod, I wouldn't be offended. It's the same sculpt, but a different doll. It's someone elses treasure that they love and adore, and made to look the way they wanted it to. That is what is so wonderful about these dolls. They're completely customizable and anyone can make them look however they want.

Remember, just because it isn't in your taste, doesn't mean someone else isnt allowed to adore it ;)

    19. I would care more about the mod being well-done than which mold it is done to.

Though I'm also fascinated by how different the same molds can look with different face-ups and stuff.

    20. Uhm... this is a really dangerous line of thought right here.

Dolls do not automatically reflect their owners deepest desires. In fact, I'd guess this reason is less common than other reasons for owning them.

Projecting this kind of attitude on one's fellow collectors is, in my opinion, very bad because it assumes the worst of people and is also somewhat foolish. Do you look at all the gay male crossdressing dolls and assume their owners want to be gay male crossdressers, or make all men gay and have them wear frilly skirts? Do you think all the people who buy fantasy dolls want hooves and horns or wings and tails? Do you think everyone who buys a child doll and covers them in ruffles wants to be a small child forever or wants a child to dress that way?

      Probably not.

So why would gore or horror mods be different? Just because you really don't like them?
