Should limiteds or oneoffs be modified or split into pieces?

Jul 3, 2007

    1. Both responses based only on emotion, no logic:

I would feel pretty dirty about modifying a one-off's face, but maybe sanding the seams or something, sure, why not? I'd cringe to see or hear about someone wiping a really exquisite faceup, especially if it was replaced with something inferior to the original, but other than complaining about it among my friends, there's really not a whole heck of a lot I can do about it. But yeah, I'd talk and laugh and wonder what the person was thinking, to be quite honest. I'm picturing a doll like Sher's awesome one-off Anais from the NY Dolpa '07 getting her face wiped clean with some solvents and I can hear my heart crying NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! at the thought of something like that. Not that I think Sher would do such a thing, but I had to give an example. Of course the doll is hers and she's quite free to do whatever she wants with it. But it'd be pretty heartbreaking. "One-of-a-kind," man! That terminology is sacrosanct. I guess in the end you'd still have something one-of-a-kind, but... but... but...

As for limiteds, well... I have three limited Volks dolls, none with their original faceups. It's my feeling that all three are greatly improved by having done so. The point of these dolls is supposed to be customization with the goal of making a doll that's unique in the world. There's still a finite number of limited dolls, though, but more than one. Go bananas. Sometimes you can modify a doll into something more wonderful than it was before.

As for splitting up a doll to sell off piece by piece... I have no interest in buying or selling a doll that way, so I don't have much to say there.

    3. I don't know if I would mind if someone else modded a doll as long as it were to make it better or more unique. As for myself I couldn't even find the heart of changing the modification of a Limited doll (major modifications like changing them or making their eyes different) especially for the sake of the money I would end up putting into getting he or she in the first place. Although I can see myself changing the face up of the doll if it were simple to begin with. I guess it depends too on the doll. I have yet to get my first limited so my mind might eventually change!

    4. Well, I'm new and all, but I'm sort-of torn between two ideas; both of them are right anyway... *_*
      1) Well, it's your doll and if you're not gonna sell it and you spent a lot of money on it, you might as well modify it until you're pleassed with the over-all outcome.:)
      2) One-offs are special because they're unique. They shouldn't really be modified since other collectors may be angry...

Well, that's what I think anyway.
      You can disagree. :sweat

    5. Hmmm kind of a tough question as I see many ways it can be answered. I dont generally think there's a strict wrong or right to this ; more like it seems sad and unfortunate when LE's are broken up in pieces or mod' to completely change their look.

Technicallyyyy, I suppose it's the owner's choice since it's their money being spent. And customization is important for the doll of your dreams, but personally , I would not break off the pieces of an LE. I'm not interested in buying a doll that way or selling a doll that way either.

As a pp also mentioned, the LE clothes can hold value in themselves and probably easily repurchased assuming someone kept the complete set together. Now, if it was a oneoffs.......hmmm that's different. I'm not sure I get why someone would want to change it. It seems to me the uniqueness and artistry was the whole point. I can see changing the faceup if it was fading but other than that, well, I think a plain sculpt would've been better purchased and modded than an LE or oneoff.

I dont consider sanding a mod but when breasts start getting ground down and holes start getting put in where they're completely unrecognizeable from their original look ...there's a part of me that goes :( :...(
Personally I would just prefer to mod a standard to my exact specs.

There's just 2 different views here it seems and this is a doll community which attracts parties from both ends. I hope we dont start dividing the 2 camps, frankly they seem to be beneficial for each other. To say BJDs are mostly customzing well that's all fine and dandy to view it that way but it's also kind of nice to know there's a collector hopefully somewhere that will have a doll in the original condition someone remembered.

    6. Even my limited edition dolls hardly wear those clothes, I still keep all the things. Yet I think people are free to do whatever they want, as long as them own the doll.

I don't think splitting off pieces of a limited or oneoff set is a good idea, but I may go and buy those parts, if I find something I love.

    7. why not? I have a limited leeke honey and I gave her default outfit to my sister for her doll :)

    8. If you buy it,you should be able to do anything you wish with it.

    9. It's your doll, you should be free to customize it as you wish.

    10. It's a hobby. Why should there be rules?

    11. If you have an intent on re-selling in the future, don't modify it.

If you do mod the doll to your liking then decide to resell it... Personally, I can't stand people who sell them at their current prices as if it still had the same make-up/outfit/wig/etc. that came with the doll :\ Whenever you mod or change the look (regardless?? <--I'm still iffy on this) the price should either go up or go down...

      Sorry, my look on this is sorta like business DX;;

    12. well, if you pay for a doll you can do whatever you wish with all the parts.

i have no problem with limited fullsets being split up or repainted ~ though i can't really think of why you'd pay the cost of a one-off if you didn't like the "whole package." even in that case though - i mean, if you fall in love with the faceup and hate the outfit and want to sell it that's fine as long as you're willing to pay the price.

    13. I have a doll with a one-off faceup which is really detailed. *points to avatar*

I would never change the faceup because then I'd have wasted the money I could have spent on just buying the basic version

But if you're buying a particular mold for it's beauty then you should be able to put whatever faceup you desire on it - it's YOUR doll after all, and YOUR character. And if you decide you don't like the nose quite that way, or the lips are just slightly off then it's up to you if you want to change it in any way.

One of the beautiful things about this hobby is the fact that we can do almost anything to a doll. And basically - who the hell has the right to tell us what we can and can't do? I'm sorry, but elitism in all it's forms is pathetic and if another doll owner says 'omg you can't do that it's a limited' i'd just flip them the bird and tell them to [expletive] off. My money. My doll. My decision. *shrugs*

That's my opinion on all things doll related though. If you're forking out a fortune for something, and you enjoy it the way it is regardless of how conventionally beautiful something is then who has the right to tell you it's not? Or that something is wrong? Oooh I'm gonna start another thread up in a mo, this has piqued my interest *goes to see if it's already been done*

    14. I just bought a LE zaoll doll from dollmore, limited to 10. And i AM going to change her wigs, and her eyes, and her outfit (i think the outfit is just a normal one from dollmore anyway, i recognise the shoes). Im leaving her faceup, but if i wanted to change it, i would! I just love her, and i havent seen a *standard* version of her, and the minute i saw her face i knew that she was perfect for this character ive wanted for years.

And if i wanted to mod her dramatically? I would. And i wouldnt feel bad about it. And id never judge other people for what they do, even "bad" mods. If thats the way you like the doll - go for it! We spend too much money to refrain from altering these dolls to be the way they want, even if the mob boos and hisses at the fact you are making a LE doll unrecognisble.

So you "ruined" an LE? You have a one-off now! And i bet if you sold it on, people wouldnt go "oooooh you musnt touch that, its a one-off"

Cos after all - it might be art, but its never going to be in a gallery, and i buy my dolls to keep them, never to resell. I can understand people feeling full sets and limited editions ought to be preserved, but COME ON! If you didnt buy the doll, then tough. You cant grumble about what other people do with theirs.

      Long live modded limiteds!!

    15. I think your money is going towards the presentation your given but with BJD's the point is also the wide possibility of customization Limited or not.. but certain dolls, I wouldn't have the heart to necessarily change their overall look, or limited faceup, to a great degree.. because that is what you paid for. And some are just way too pretty to me, like Elf Ducan or a lot of Dolkot's Limited dolls that are like, ONE in the world, I could obviously never take off their beautiful faceups (perfect example = Snow Mountain Dai, right now. god he's expensive xD..)
I appreciate them like little people xD don't wanna ruin their little looks~ But really, these dolls are meant to be photographed and played with in a variety of manners for adults so I don't think a lot of people are going to be compelled to let them sit on a shelf the way they are forever, I must admit that.

    16. I think when it comes to modding closed eyes to open and obtaining a certain mold which is unique only to a limited or one-off doll then that's perfectly fine to me, and hopefully you'll have no intention of selling the doll later so you can do what you want with it. But I think limiteds are still special, they're LIMITED dolls. Changing them drastically seems a little odd but people will do as they please.

    17. Can you imagine if I ever, EVER wiped Ashby's faceup off???? :o:o:evil::x OMG I would get hate mail from around the world. Zomg.

I think limiteds - such as Masha, or elf lishe for example - are different than a one-off. Of COURSE it's your doll, and it's to do with whatever you want, but gosh, if I ever decided I wanted an anais but wanted her to look different than Ashby, I'd sell ashby as is and buy a blank anais or one that looked like I wanted it to. She was a ONE off.... one of a kind... two lovely volks peeps (her artist and her costumer) put a ton of love and thought into her, and for me to wipe it just seems truly awful to me. I wouldn't sell her outfit separately, either; even if I did not like it (and I do, I love it!) I would just put it in a box until the day ever came that I'd sell her. Because if anything, then, she'd be complete, and if money was a concern, I'd get (I would hope) what I paid for her.

      Again, limiteds are different.

But really - I do think the bottom line is - it's the owner's doll to do with what they wish. And while we might be weeping inside at the fact that somebody wiped a one-off, it IS their doll, and they will have to deal with the repercussions of that down the line, should they ever wish to sell it, or whatever.

    18. If the girl who bought my Chiwoo Elf in the first place wouldn't have decided to split him, I wouldn't have him now.
The split of a limited doll shouldn't be something terrible. That's exactly what bjd's are made for,
to customise them in any way we want. ;)

In the case of one-off's, I think if I had a Kurumi or Luna, I would keep everything that came with them, including the make up. I just wouldn't be able to split them in any way, but that's every owner decision. ;)

    19. Personally, I really don't think Limited dolls should be motified especially their makeup because each of them is designed for their own concept. Once you modify them, they are no longer "original" or "genuine" of artworks. I felt sad when I saw someone selling the innocent kid delf whose makeup is modified. I can't understand why the seller modifed his gorgeous makeup.

About splitting into pieces, I think it's okay as long as they're not modified.

    20. Sad as it would be to those who badly wanted the limited or Ooak in question.
It really does come down to whatever the owner of the doll decides. They paid for it and they alone have the right to decide what the doll becomes. Whether as is, a new face up or a complete re-work. *shrugs*
