1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Should limiteds or oneoffs be modified or split into pieces?

Jul 3, 2007

    1. I have to agree with most of the other people that have posted. It's your doll to do what you want with. In many cases you can only get a certain Volks doll as a limited full set. In my case I didnt want the outfits from Cristal or Spring Stroll Liz and other people did...seems like selling them was the right thing for me to do

    2. People should do with their dolls as they please, it's their dolls, their money- if they wish to mod limiteds or split the set into pieces- well, then it's really their choice and no one should judge them for during that.

Having said that- when the Nightmare Sharmin (limited to 10 pieces worldwide) was released a few years back I decided NOT to buy her- because I had a silly ''no MSDs rule'' at that time. I did regret that decision- and when I last year got the chance to buy a Nightmare Sharmin fullset w/ original face up, original clothes, wig, paperwork, everything!- I just couldn't believe my luck! To this day I am still soooo thankful that the previous owner didn't split or mod the doll, because to me the Nightmare Sharmin w/ her original face up is just so unique and perfect in every way :)

    3. I posted so long ago in this thread. I think since then I was able to get my hands on second rather limited head, which I then heavily modded.

My Limited 'Van' doll by Domuya is my Tom 'Marvolo' Riddle or more commonly known to people as Lord Voldemort. I kept getting harassed about when/if I was going to remove his nose to make him a proper Voldemort. But I couldn't bare to mod my precious Marvolo. I managed to get a hold of a second 'Van' head, when there was the strange Domuya deal when Fin came out. So I then modded this second head. But now I get bitched at for modding a limited doll. (Sigh) So you get bitched at either way. No winning sometimes.

    4. Aw, who cares what other people think? Good for you! I'm happiest when I please myself. Some people just have nothing better to do than mind other peoples business. I could understand a little if it was a super rare and very expensive doll, but you had two of them, and he was the perfect doll for you to mod. I see many dolls here that are only available as limited editions and they have been modded, tattooed, and repainted by their owners, so you are not the only one. Some people are collectors and like to keep these dolls just as they were issued by the company and some like to make these dolls their own by changing them. I would rather play with mine and change them if I wish.

    5. I can't say this for everyone because well, I am not everyone, but personally I wouldn't mod up a one-off or LE.

As a crazy putty-wielding person, I feel a lot more comfortable hacking together standards to my specifications, anyhow. If I did somehow want a one-off/LE doll, I'd probably keep the costume with the doll box in a safe place (my spare closet, right now) so that if I ever had to part with them, someone else could have the joy of owning that limited or one-off that they couldn't get their hands on before.

I guess I'd replace their eyes and hair (and keep the originals), and if their faceup got damaged badly I'd replace it with something in the spirit of what they were created in or commission someone to do so.

Standards, though? Bring on the X-actos, sandpaper and putty, it's new face/limb time.

    6. This is sort of a split issue for me.

On one hand, people should be able to do whatever the heck they feel like with their dolls. There are some cases where people will take a rare doll and make it even more valuable with some hard work.

However, there are other cases where people can ruin something really beautiful with "too-high" aspirations. And it seems like such a waste.

If it were me, I wouldn't, personally, mod a limited/split it into pieces.
But, I guess, I'm in support of people doing "their thing". (But I always hope they come out with some sort of taste.)

    7. I am thinking on getting a limited edition Kid Dollmore Girl - Sweet Wind Memory MOMO from Dollmore. I am actually very serious about it. The only thing is, I was planning on changing the wig and eye colour of the doll.

Is it ok to change some of the features of a 'limited edition doll' or would you think of this as morally wrong?

      please discuss

    8. There's actually been a debate thread about changing LE's that you might find to be of interest.

It's your doll and you should do what you want with it, end of story. Plus, changing wigs and eyes are not permenant changes--you could always choose to put the default eyes and wig back on the doll. These dolls are meant to be changed--that's why they're constructed the way they are.

    9. I have a Dollmore Rosee Asha, which is an older LE. She looks nothing like her default. I'm owner number four and the factory faceup has gone (wiped and redone years ago by someone else and she's had multiple faces since then), the eyes have been modded, the wig, eyes, and dress have disappeared with previous owners...but she's still a Rosee Asha, no matter what she wears.

I don't see the debate. Or the problem.

    10. Its yours. You do what you want with it. XD Just make note that you changed stuff if/when you try to re-sell (modding wise). However, I'm not necessarily sure why you wouldn't get the normal release of the doll and still make the same changes.

Now if you love the clothes and stuff that's one thing, but why pay more if you're not keeping everything as is?

I'm probably not too clear on what I'm trying to say, but I'm doing something a little similar. I'm buying a LE doll for the faceup, all of his clothes and wigs are going to another doll, he'll still be what he is, just with different hair and different clothes.

I don't see what's wrong with changing something small about the LE doll, you get it because you love the set/mold not necessarily because you just want that one in the picture exactly (in most cases :sweat )

    11. See my worry is that it is a limited edition as in only 40 of them like her will be made. So would it not be viewed at as 'destroying art' if I changed her?

    12. I have an LE10 fullset doll, and the first thing I did when I got him was to find him new clothes, eyes, and a different wig. ^_~ I loved his sculpt, but the other features didn't suit what I wanted for the doll. I've posted a few photos of the "new doll", and he seems to have been received well by the community so far. :)

In the end, it is your doll to do with as you wish... it's not "morally wrong", even if you wanted to mod her to have a nose in the middle of her forehead. Granted, you'd likely get a few askance glances for such an extreme and unusual mod to a limited doll. But that still wouldn't make it "wrong". Overall, changing a wig, eyes, and clothing on a fullset (even super-limiteds) is very, very common. Faceups and modding are a bit of a touchier subject for some, but I wouldn't worry about non-permanent changes like the ones you're planning. If it makes the doll who you want her to be, go for it!

    13. I think people should fall in love with a doll because of its sculpt and not just its faceup or defaults.
I think its fine to keep it default but in my opinion when their is another 400 people that have the same doll with the same faceup and dress it in its default clothes. I think its abit boring XP seeing the same doll over and over again on gallery.
I think its awsome when someone changes a limited doll abit.
looking at customed LE are fun and when there is one im curious to see how people have changed it.
The eyes and wig that the company puts on a LE is to suit the faceup.
and it depends on taste whether it suits the buyer or not .
But i love customed dolls they are soo special because i think once its changed
Its really the only one of its kind in the world :D
i have a limited bianka and now i love her more than ever after her new faceup was done .
I love her default clothes but i guess depending on my mood i will change the clothes every 3 days or so for photos XD

    14. In general, changing a limited doll's wig and eyes isn't really considered changing the doll, since you can always pop their original eyes back in and the original wig back on and the doll is just like it was before. It's your doll to do what you want with- a lot of people go further than that with limiteds and re-do their faceup or sometimes even modify the mold itself. Changing the outfit, wig, and eyes is pretty normal for most people. :)

    15. Once you put the money down and get the doll, that doll is yours. Change the hair, the eyes, the clothes, whatever, go for it! No matter what anyone on the Internet or otherwise says/writes, you are now the owner and final decision maker on the doll's appearance. It's not connected to morals at all in my opinion.

Despite that paragraph above, I have to admit one thing. If someone wiped the faceup/facial markings/tattoos off one of the Dolkot One-of-a-Kinds and I happened to see any pictures showing the before and after, you would probably be able to hear my scream of horror several continents over. Even then, it's nothing to do with morals.

    16. lol

Ok I would NEVER do that to a one of a kind doll * dies* but one that has several versions.... I am feeling more releived.

    17. I dunno.

I think it would be sorta useless on your part to spend the extra money on an LE doll just to change it (Faceup/make up wise, anyways); unless it's an LE mold.

But, all in all; it's your doll, and you do what you want. Just, if you ever try to re-sell it, it will probably hurt the value.

    18. I'm getting a Hazy, and I'm sorry, purists, I'm going to HAVE to change that faceup because I don't like it at all. If you're just changing her wig/eyes, you're not "ruining" the doll, you can put them away and put them back on her later.

    19. I own limited dolls and I have changed face ups on one of them and on another of them I've carved up the headcap to add magnets to it. I also always change wigs and eyes. I have also cut the wig of one of my Le's.

I don't see any problem with modding, face upping or changing a limited doll, as long as you don't destroy or ruin it beyond a reasonable level.

If you want to mod a limited by sanding, cutting or molding until its beyond recognition, then that is more questionable in my opinion. If you want to mod a doll beyond initial recognition then you could probably do the same with a non limited.

    20. I would think the only debate would come in if you want to sell her. When you buy her, she's yours to do with as you please. But, if you later try to sell her, and advertise her as the LE, I think it would be morally wrong to fail to include descriptions of all the changes you made.
