Should limiteds or oneoffs be modified or split into pieces?

Jul 3, 2007

    1. I think changing wig and eyes is just fine. I have Momo, got her secondhand. I have no idea actually if her eyes are original. I just didn't like them because they are pupil-less. I will try to get a pic and post her new look. I also changed her wig, and have some new clothes on order. It's your doll to do what you want with.

On the other hand, if you're talking about extreme mods like making the ears pointy or filing the eye sockets or some such, you might want to think twice before doing something like that. Just my opinion!

    2. hmm, I actually have this dilemma at the moment. The doll I won off eBay came with a Softly She Walks outfit, which I really don't like (not the company, just this particular outfit). I like the jeans, and the mesh top is fine if reversed, but the zip up hoody and boots really aren't my thing. Do I sell the whole outfit (and loose out on the jeans and top) or just split the outfit and sell the couple of bits I don't like...? Or do I keep the whole thing because I shouldn't split an outfit?

    3. Maybe I'm weird. My brain automatically plays with the numbers on this. I can only really speak for myself on this, and even then it's principally my gut reaction talking.

OOAKs I would not split off or mod heavily. I'd probably barely ever touch the poor thing, personally, and maybe switch around wigs and eyes once in a blue moon, or try some other outfit on it for a few pics, but then change it back quickly just to prevent anything from getting lost or misplaced. For some reason, OOAKs have the strongest 'this is my art' feeling about them to me, and I have a hard time even thinking about messing with art. Even with dolls designed to be customized, the OOAKs I have seen look like 'the customizing has been done' to me -- as in, "This is what we would do to customize this doll here at the doll studio, we're just giving you the chance to buy it".

Smaller limited editions I'd still be wary about -- anything with, say, 10-25 or less made. I probably wouldn't mod the doll itself unless it was a mold available in a non-limited form as well, and honestly, in that case I would be tempted to get the non-limited head or version to do the actual mods on, and swap parts around. I'd be more likely to sell off the outfit (all of its parts in one pile) though, if I didn't care for it, but still quite reluctant.

Beyond that, it opens up a lot. My only current LE (100) is an off-topic girl, but she was a 'basic set' in a lot of ways. I ordered her blank and did my very first faceup experiments on her. Her wig has changed around, I've had her eyes out, she was subjected to the joy and rapture of 'how do I apply eyelashes to an eyesocket that tiny?!' and so on, so I can't really say, "OMG NEVER TOUCH A LIMITED!" with a straight face.

    4. This is an importan subject to me right now.
I'm totally in love with Volks Souseiseki, but complety default, with her face up and everything and it's so hard to find one that way here at the DOA marketplace. The only way is Yahoo!Japan, but she so expensive there *_*

I love all the Seisekis I've seen, with their amazing custom facep ups and different clothes, but in the other hand it just break my heart to see them that way and see how people split her outfit and everything, cause I want her complete! :...( People totally forgot she was meant to be Souseiseki and they see her just like another limited Volks mold.

Of course, they can do whatever they want, they are their dolls and it's their money, and I'm sorry if someone gets upset, but that's how I feel about it :(

    5. Well, the owner has the right to do whatever they want with it. Though I can't help but wince whenever I hear it's been done. :/

    6. I, personally, would never mod a limited or one-off doll, since it will probably hurt the value... But I mean, people can do what they want... it's their money, their doll...

    7. Personally, I'd rather not have someone do that, if it's a mold specific limited. If there are only a few in the world, why mod it? Screws with the resale price and makes it a little harder to sell even if the mods are done well.

As someone who apparently will have to get her limited dolls second hand sometimes, it rather sucks to see the doll you want or have been looking for, but it's been modded into a way that works for what the original owner wanted, but not for what you'd like. In a way getting your hopes up and then having them dropped again.

People can do whatever they want with the dolls that they buy. We've got no right to say what other people can and cannot do with what they purchase, but it doesn't make it suck any less for those of us that want what they have, and are "messing up". XD

I'm sure there are plenty of us that have looked through the marketplace and/or galleries and found dolls that they were wanted to purchase but were sold out on the sites and got a good long look at what an owner has done to them. Some good and some bad, but I don't doubt that those of us that have come across the bad ones get the feeling of "WHY DIDN'T THEY GET SOMETHING ELSE IF THEY WERE GOING TO DO THAT TO IT?!!?!?! DX"

Example, my friend thought there were more Iplehouse Akandos than there actually are, she thought they were standard edition. I want one rather bad. She kept talking about how she only wanted his body and didn't want anything else about him, she didn't even like him. Every time she mentioned only wanting the body, it just didn't sit well with me.

Yes, I got that feeling I was talking about XD

    8. Yeah, but what about in instances like Volks, where *most* of the dolls they make are limited.

Does the term "limited" mean less then? When almost everything they make is "limited"... especially when you know they've been known to re-release?

    9. I would assume that depends. If they only release them in limited quantities and if they're mold or accessory based limiteds.

    10. As far as I know, they're all released in limited quantities (a quantity that they don't disclose) and all accessories AND the mold are limited

but they are prone to rereleasing molds, usually though, with different accessories, unless, of course, it was a limited that didn't come with accessories, then the 2nd release is pretty much exactly the same as the first.

Also, they don't disclose that they will or will not ever be rereleasing these limiteds.

    11. Well, I don't plan to resell my dolls so I don't see why I should hold onto bits I don't particularly want just in case I need to resell them. Also, if another part of that doll could bring someone else so much joy then that's good for me. I have already split my Akando and sold his gentle head to a friend. Also, my Nevermind Kyrie I have changed her eyelashes, sold her wig and covered her in tattoos. They're my dolls and I can do what I like with them.

    12. Personally I wouldn't split or mod them. If I'm going to spend that much money on a doll it's going to be because it's a doll I love exactly as is. Not only that but if one day I decided I wanted to sell it I could sell it as the original.

    13. Personally I like things to be originals, so I don't really like the idea, but on the other hand - it doesn't make it less rare to mod it or split it. ;D

    14. In my oppinion that is up to the buyer to decide. You buy the doll: You decide if you want to keep all the stuff. Also the modding part. Why is it wrong to change a doll YOU own? It isn't.

    15. if you buy it you can do whatever the hell you want with it. regardless of what others may think/say.
IMO i think it would be a shame to perminatly mod a limited doll that many people want so badly (But only if you wanted to turn around and sell it after) but if it is your doll .. well there is nothing anyone can do about it and its your right to do what you want to it

and as for spliting i have no problem with it whatsoever. for example sooms limited dolls have limited outfits and eyes and such and why not split the goods if you where only interested in the doll itself? people who only want the eyes or only want the outfit cant buy them otherwise so it leaves nothing to waste.

    16. I can understand why people might be against this, and yes it could potentially destroy the value of the doll but people are entitled to do what they want with their possesions.

My doll isn't a limited mold but has a limited face-up. I don't plan on changing it unless it gets messed up or damaged. I do plan on doing ear mods as well as some mods to the body. But I have no intention of selling this doll and if I decide that this girl isn't for me, I'll sell her before I do these mods. If I did change my mind down the line, well then ill have to live with it and hope she sells at a probably lower price.

    17. Totally up to the owner to decide, I completely agree.

In the future there are two limiteds that I plan to buy. There are also a few others that are on my "maybe" wishlist. The two that are serious future purchases are dolls that I am only interested in if they're fullset (or very near to it). It irks me on a very superficial level to see those two in the market missing parts of their fullsets, or with new faceups but, in the end, they're not my dolls. I have no say in what happens to them in the future and can't change what happened in the past. Their previous owners wanted to modify them and that was their decision. The doll in it's default look didn't please them, so it was changed. I applaud that. Why keep it original if the original doesn't make you happy?

There's a nice mix of opinions on this topic. Some are all for keeping a limited fullset intact and others have no problem changing it to suit their wishes. Because of that, there will be complete fullsets for those who desire them, and there will be modified dolls also. It's a good system.

As for one-offs.... The very nature of a one-off is that it is the only one of it's kind (LOL No, really Alchemical?! D'uh). What I mean is modifying one really doesn't alter it's one-offness, does it? I look at one-offs more as artists proofs, not limited collectibles.

    18. Personally; I wouldn't do it, since it could hurt the doll's value. But, then again, I'm really money-conscious, so... I'm always trying to not ruin the value of the things I buy.

But, as many people said; it's the owner's choice. If they want to completelly rip apart and split an one-of, it's their money...

    19. Kind of jsut to see people's opinions, but do you think if a limited doll that has a faceup and such, is wiped and gets a new faceup and or modded, looses value or gains value, or stays the same? (also it can depend on how good the faceup and modding job is)

    20. Just for fun, but do you think if a doll is limitited, and is modded on or has a new faceup, does it go up in value, down in value, or stays the same. (Can depend on how good the modding job is.)
