Should limiteds or oneoffs be modified or split into pieces?

Jul 3, 2007

    1. Modified i would say absolutely not.... however split up into peices say head from body and that sort of thing.... im still uncertain, i know my girl was very into the Topaz sculpt from SOOM at one point and she was excited about some one wanting to sell the head because she was really after that part of the doll as per the entire thing.... i think however there should never be a question as far as one offs go if you seperate anything from it , or god forbid modify it, you should be euthenized.

    2. ...excuse me?

    3. :ablink::ablink::ablink::ablink::ablink:

God forbid you change something about your own purchased doll!

    4. ^I think this could (or should) be rephrased as "I strongly oppose splitting or modifiying one offs."

Back to the original question: Should limiteds or oneoffs be modified or split into pieces?

Personally I don't care that much. What if that one off or limited head is perfect for what you have in mind, but on a body you don't like? I've seen beautiful heads on bodies I would not want to own.
Customisation is part of the hobby. Why stop at limiteds and one offs? Why hold on to a dress or face-up you don't like? Especially when there might be someone who wants the dress, but not the doll. (You can't really swap face-ups. ;) )
Of course there are people who would love to have the limited or one off you have in perfect condition, but if it is your doll, it's yours.

If you get a doll that is available in basic edition, but your limited/one off has a special face-up, then it would be a shame if you wipe off the face-up the moment it gets home. But what if the face-up turns out to be less to your liking when you see it in person? Should you be forced to keep the face-up or sell your doll so you can get a basic edition and give the basic one the face-up you want?
For crying out loud, it is your doll. Sure, some people are going to be disappointed, because they may have wanted that limited/one off in the original condition, but they sadly missed out on getting that limited/one off. Is that your fault or your duty to make up for it?

I'd be sad if a beautiful limited or one off gets split up and/or modified, but I'm happy when I see a doll customised into something beautiful. Even if that doll contains parts of a limited or one off.

People should be free to decide whether they want to split or modify their dolls. It's also perfectly fine to keep your doll as is and never change a thing even when people nag this hobby is about customisation.

Bottom line: I pretty much agree with what has been said before by people who don't mind altering limiteds and one offs.

    5. lol what!? Do you mean, say, a single OOAK that has never been reproduced before or since? I'm not sure how many of those are around in this particular strain of BJDs... I agree it would be a shame to see a true one-of-a-kind poorly modified, but well-done modification can enhance a doll's beauty.

Things like Volks one-offs are existing sculpts which have just been re-cast and customized specially for an event... the only way you'd be able to tell they're actual one-offs (as opposed to any other LE release of many of the scame sculpt) I suppose would be via details like papers and the headplate, and the owner's say-so.

    6. errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr so i pay 1k+ for that doll...and let it sit in a shadow room and just...watch it? lordy i pay a doll because i like something about it, or i know it can be mod into something more....enchanting to fit my need, not because it a OOAK and it already 'perfect'

but to each our own i guess -.-

    7. You should really consider editing your post and rephrasing this. People have the right to do whatever they want with their own things. If you feel so strongly about protecting one offs buy them all yourself.
Stating perhaps that you personally don't agree with modifying or splitting a one off is fine. You are entitled to your opinion and have the right to do what you want with your own things. However, forcing your ways and opinions on others is not allowed. By making a statement like this one, it seems like that is exactly what you are trying to do.

    8. I would feel a heartache if an LE/one off be split into pieces... but then again, it's their dolls. For me, there's no point in getting one if you plan to split it.

    9. If I were asked this question several months ago, I would have said 'Not really, I don't see why people split them' but after my situation when trying to get a Glati, I realised exactly why people do split them and joined a split myself for the Glati, it was the only way I could afford him.

My Glati is going to be painted odd colours, covered in patterns, will have littlefee wings, even going to have a horn modded onto his head (though he isn't a Glati head) and a tail attached to his rear end. My Glati is going to be my anthro (though human faced) pegacorn. What I do with my own posessions, how I design my dolls, how this design ends up with me modding this doll whether it be by body painting or sticking a magnet in his rear end so I can attach a horse tail is my business. I'm not going to be selling him any time soon, I bought him purposely for this reason.

    10. Are you serious ? Are you a troll ? Do you really believe what you say o-O .... do you use God for your statement or I read bad ??????

In fact I think I will continue to stuck in my mind than YES I do read bad your words, it's better ....... people do what they want with their dolls ! <= This is my personnal statement. As long they are happy with, I don't have to put my nose in their business.

To reply to the subject, I see nothing bad to split a doll or modify it, if people are more happy doing this, then all is ok on earth ! If that's the only way to get a doll or something when why to bother ? They are happy then it's all that count !

    11. Ahahaha, you're the best troll.

    12. If you buy it, you should be able to do whatever you want to it. It's your doll, limited/one-off or not, enjoy it however you see fit. :doh

    13. Alright, alright - let's just not go there. Okay? If we have to we can remove this last page and a half of posts but then what will we entertain ourselves with later, true? So....either continue WITHOUT commenting on the Euthanasia comment or the thread will be locked....which it's probably due for now anyway....

    14. I think it matters a great deal to consider what makes a limited or one-off special? Is the head a special sculpt or is the body also a one-of-a-kind, because of modifications or skin color? Or is it just a special faceup on a standard-issue doll (or soon to be standard-issue), or is it just a matter of the clothing/accessories being created for a particular "persona"?

I have a Vincent The Puppet Master, which is a very limited Domuya doll, whose face/head sculpt I loved from the first time I saw it. I thought I'd never get to see, never mind own one.

I got him after he was split from his original outfit. But that split brought the price down enough to enable me to get him. There was nothing special about his body, though. It was a standard white Domuya flexibody, which I couldn't stand, so I sold that and put him on something more stable and functional (for MY purposes). And I had no qualms about doing that, in this particular case.

    15. Recently in the marketplace I found a volks limited which had heavy (I mean HEAVY) modifications to it, so much so you could barely tell it was the original sculpt. It got me wondering what other thought about modding a limited sculpt. So here are my questions

Do you think it's ok to mod a limited doll?
How much modding is to modded on a limited doll?
Would you consider purchasing a modded limited?
How much would you consider a modded limited would be worth? At the price the original owner paid? Worth more? worth less?

Have you ever bought a modded limited doll? If so what modifications were made?

For me I feel a modded limited isn't to bad unless it's modded so much you can't tell what the original sculpt was. I feel if you can't tell the original sculpt it should be worth less because it's no longer the limited sculpt, whereas if the modding was only a slight eye opening I feel sometimes it may be worth a little more or the same value as the original owner paid. I would consider purchasing a modded limited if it was only slightly modded, if the doll had been modded to no longer look like the original I would not consider purchasing unless I found the mods to be VERY attractive. I once bought a limited luts vampire event head from 2008(I believe) he had yellowed and had a slight eye open which I found him to be a little more valuable. I bought him for around 120 plus shipping, unfortunately I ran into some money trouble and could afford to part with him as he didn't have a body and I sold him for the same price I paid.

Note to the mods..I hope this hasn't been discussed, when I searched it only came up with 6 threads and none of them dealt with modding a limited, if it has been discussed and I just didn't pay enough attention please feel free to move or delete as needed

    16. Though the OP doesn't ask it specifically, this thread discusses your questions quite often.

    17. There seem to be so many threads in Dolly Debate that have the same answers - your money, your doll, your business!

Do you think it's ok to mod a limited doll?
      Of course.

How much modding is to modded on a limited doll?
No such thing. If it's your property - go nuts!

Would you consider purchasing a modded limited?
If the mods were well done and suited my personal taste - yes.

How much would you consider a modded limited would be worth? At the price the original owner paid? Worth more? worth less?
Any doll is worth as much as a person is willing to pay. One modded limited may be worth less or more depending on the person. The final price depends on the market and how long you're willing to hold out for a person who thinks the doll is worth as much as you stipulate. So there's really no set worth to a modded limited.

Have you ever bought a modded limited doll? If so what modifications were made?
I consider a modded doll to be one that has had the body/head altered through sanding, scarring, etc. So, in that sense, I've never bought a modded doll.

    18. Lots of people do it. I am guessing that the basic style suits but they have a character in mind. Thus, modifications are required.

"is it ok?" Who on earth will say it is not?

    19. I dont think its up for anyone but the owner to decide, and I dont see why you should care if the dolls limited or not, dolls are already very different from each other. On the other hand, I think it would be stupid to spend 700$ on a doll, to mod so much that you cant see the original sculpt, when a cheaper mold probably would work just as well for that purpose.

Uhm, Im not sure if this is true or not, Im new to the hobby, but I heard that molded dolls often are worth more than the original skulpt, so if thats true, the molding is nicely done usw, I dont see why the price should drop.

    20. It depends on the quality of the mods. A doll that's been modded very successfully can be appealing to buyers who like the look or maybe want a modded doll but aren't comfortable doing the mods themselves. Well done mods can definitely add to the uniqueness of a doll and really make them one of a kind, it's more a matter of whether or not the workmanship is there.
