Sock dresses and the anger they seem to generate.

Nov 11, 2010

    1. I concur. Socks do have perfectly sized prints for our dolls; so do some underwear. You can also find patterned socks and underwear for cheap at Walmart/Kmart. I wouldn't just cut off the toe and slap it on, I'd prefer to at least try to come up with something nice.

    2. Permanent sock dresses annoy me, why not buy a nice secondhand outfit on the marketplace for $30 instead? Temporary sock outfits are ok, no one wants their doll to be naked on a shelf!

      By sock dresses I refer to grabbing an old sock, cutting the toe off, and then slapping it on your doll.

    3. A little OT, but...I keep meaning to grab a doll and hit up WalMart's underwear section for some cute fabric with in-scale prints. I've heard that a bra has enough material to make an MSD shirt from, and a pair of non-thong underwear has enough for a dress. I want to test this theory, because man some of those prints are CUTE.

    4. - Do you have an aversion to sock dresses?
      Only if I have to try and wear them XD

      - Do you think it makes a doll less of a doll when it doesn't have what the average owner calls proper clothing?

      No, you can't change that it's a DOLL. It'll be a doll f it runs around naked. ^___^

      - Do you think less of the owner when they choose to either have a temporary sockdress or a permanent sock dress?
      Nope. you own the doll, you can do whatever you like! it's your doll, not mine XD

      - Let me now how you feel about sock dresses in general. : I like them, and enjoy making them.

      Hahahahha... when I got my first on-topic doll, I had tons of barbie clothes for her. She was a Lilac Bobobie March. I dragged her everywhere, but I wanted to make her something to wear myself- and had never done so before.

      so I grabbed a lonely sock and made her a dress, hat, and little pantaloons. I liked the fact that she was wearing something I made (as opposed to barbie clothes, which didn't fit her hands very well, anyway) made me really happy. I went on to work with more socks, and then just stretchy material, and now I can make normal doll clothes out of just about anything.

      I think sock dresses are like the entrance drug of doll-clothes making. Sometimes if I'm feelin' lazy I make them for fun out of singular socks, gloves, and other such stretchy things.

    5. Oops..mistake >_<

    6. babytarragon's game thread has already got some lovely examples of good sock clothing in it!

      We have an option, too, if you want to display lesser-attempts or just plain silliness in sockwear, or even other non-usual clothing "materials" at:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...-weird-tacky-or-just-plain-!-clothing-sources!)

      Back on discussion (sorta):
      Micchi said:
      Gah, I've noticed that too! And the material is usually very soft.

      Scenario question: If you get your doll around Christmas time, and just toss on a fast covering out of a seasonal sock, is there any slack cut for the design being decorative, even if the outfit is rudimentary?

    7. From the economic side:
      I understand that hobby-money is tight for some people, but the last time I bought more than enough cute fabric for one doll outfit (0.3m @ $4.50 per metre) from a retail fabric store, it cost me $1.35
      A more expensive fabric at $10 per metre cost $3.00
      A nice bit from the remnants bin cost me 40 cents.

      The last time I bought a cute pair of pattern socks? $6.00

      Enough fabric to make 3 doll outfits together cost less than 1 pair of socks.

      From the personal side:
      I can't see anything made out of a sock without thinking "I wonder if it smells like feet?" :B
      New socks are okay; I once made a pair of argylle doll socks out of a pair I bought for that purpose. But, sometimes I see a doll in a sock that was obviously used on a human foot. And, even though its probably clean... I still think "I wonder if that doll smells like feet?" (This is 100% just me and my weird aversion to having socks touch anything but my feet. Even sock-monkeys make me think this.)

      There are so many other household options other than socks available to everyone; old T-shirt, handkercheifs, teddy-bear sweaters, cloth dinner napkins, etc... I just don't understand why some people choose socks...

    8. Well, I can imagine why. With a sock you just have to cut the toe off and tada! Instant sock dress. With a T-shirt or other piece of fabric you need to sew, glue or pin the fabric together, although I once made a sari-like outfit with a scarf. That was an instant outfit without even needing to cut, sew, glue or pin something.

    9. Buying fabric is all well and good, IF you have a sewing machine, or even the talent to sew something for your doll. Not everyone has that gift. So yes while the numbers for the cost of fabric are nice, it's just not realistic in all situations ^__^;

    10. I have to disagree here... I think if even I can create something with a scrap of fabric and a sewing needle and thread, anyone can. I'm a clumsy and largely talentless person, and I have managed to dress my dolls by hand.

    11. I have to disagree with you as well, because everyone is not the same. Because sometimes even if someone attempts at making something out of fabric and they can't sew for love, nor money...it looks worse than a sock dress could. So it's kinda pointless if it's just going to look as bad and take more time you know? Just saying! ^^;

      Edit: I'm not saying any of your creations came out badly, I'm meaning generally.

    12. I don't see anything wrong with it, if it's a temporary thing. (Okay, so "temporary" in my case has been 2 years. Whoops!) After spending $$$ on a doll, $$ on a wig, $$ on the eyes you desperately need, and $$ on those limited Leeke shoes you can't live without, it's sometimes a lot to ask to spend $$-$$$ on clothes, too. And then sometimes it's really difficult to find the kind of clothes you like, too! (Why are 96% of MSD dresses in Lolita style?!?!?!?!) And getting something commissioned is pretty intimidating, too!

      For just a quick photo, like a resin comparison, or an eye size comparison, or "My awesome Leeke wig is here and I love it and want to show it off!!" pic, a sock dress is fine. If you're planning on sticking the pic in the gallery and wanting people to praise it, at least make it look nice.

      Hmm, that ended up a little more elitist than I intended... especially since I've got 4 at home wearing squares of flannel tied at the waist. :O

    13. That's true, objectively speaking. I guess I'm speaking more about something like 'charm' whereas you're talking about whether it actually looks any good!!

      (And no offence taken: I still have pictures from my sewing attempts five years ago which DID look worse than sock dresses!)

    14. Better than the dish towel fastened with a rubber band around the middle I have resorted to when they first arrive and don't have clothes yet, but want to get a picture up for someone or don't want to see them lying around naked.

      I make clothes, but sell most of the ones I make, so my poor dollies.....just like the cobbler's children.

    15. It was very helpful to have a sister that was able to sew! Being a complete new doll owner and a not a seamstress and all! She was able to use some spare fabric and make him some serious undies! Then she made him a quick robe! I think she was having to much fun. XD

      I make sure my dolls at least have underwear!

    16. Ah I see! Makes sense to me now. Charmwise yes! I agree.

      ( Ok cool :) and oh dear...haha)

    17. Sadly, most of mine go commando....
      :?

    18. I accidentally had it merged with Hobbywhelmed's game, didn't realise they were different games ^^;

    19. It's not really too hard to make the pants from undeadthreads.com. Sure, they're SD-sized, but I tried making a smaller pair for my MSD-size Emma. The first pair was doing the Captain Morgan leg raise, but the second pair were great. Just had to alter the pattern a bit. I've only been sewing for, like, 2-3 months. I keep making pants.

      Gotta alter the pattern because the original is too narrow and too long for my doll.

      Had I known that Dollmore makes a habit of shipping their dolls in underclothes, I might have held out for a better outfit - or at least a pair of pants.

      And, personally, I don't really like DollHeart clothing. It's not so much the expense, it's much more a taste issue. It's too fancy for my taste.
