SOOM 2011 Monthly Doll Speculation thread

Jan 26, 2011

    1. The demonlets are adorable. I love the new colors! I just really hope they do some of the big dolls with an option for blue or pink or red (And WS, Soom... it has been much too long since there has been a male MD with WS...) maybe even pure white! There has been too much tan and normal lately in the big dolls! I bet big blue-white angel men and Mega Gem red demons would sell very well!

    2. Must....save....money.....for......potential......Mega Gem centaur.........nrgh..........

Oh gods. I would define Epidos as Light. Can you imagine a Dark Mega Gem centaur? I wonder if Soom takes kidneys as payments.

    3. Haha... if they start taking internal organs as payment then I am really doomed! ^-^ I would really like to see a dark Super Gem angel girl to be my Amphibel's evil twin. That would be so great, but it would need to be toward the end of the year when I am done paying off all my current layaways! Right now, I am really glad next month will be a large male because as a general rule I don't like male dolls too much and I can count on one hand all the ones I like out of all the ones I have seen.

    4. I would love a dark sister for my Amphibel!

    5. Yeah, if they don't make her a dark counter part then I think I will be very disappointed. I might in that case have to make one myself somehow! Like maybe if they release Amphibel in SO then get her and fashion her some dark wings and give her a dark face-up and outfit. ^-^

    6. Looking at the pattern from last year, it seems like it's Big Girl, Big Guy, Little ones, Big Girl, Big Guy, Little ones.... So going with their Light vs. Dark theme, I'm guessing that the next one in May is going to be a big light guy (I think the fact that it's a big guy has been confirmed), then big dark girl, then little light guys and then big dark guy... Of course, Soom hasn't really ever followed a pattern perfectly, and I'm guessing they may not necessarily follow this one either since it only covers six months.

Still I'm looking forward to all of the big guys! I like how neither Amphibel nor the little devils have any kind of animal feet/influence thing going, and instead have more fantasy parts like wings and extra heads. I'm actually hoping that Soom will go in the direction of optional heads/special-items-NOT-for-legs route this year (Personally, I'm a little sick of hooves... Though I wouldn't actually mind seeing hooves again as long as their design is drastically different from any of the other ones we've seen, like something more graceful - they'd make sense on a devil guy or girl).

And I'm also selfishly waiting for the light tinies to see if there's going to be an interesting white (or black!) outfit to get for my devil kid.

    7. Yeah, I am pretty excited with this new theme too... can't wait to see what all they do with it! I like not having fantasy feet for Amphibel and these tinies.... I wonder if they are trying to stay away from fantasy feet for this theme? Or maybe just hooves since there have been a lot of anti-hooves comments on the doll pages of late. Either way, I feel I am pretty safe next month since I don't really like male sculpts, but I fear their next tinies and especially their next large girl!!

    8. I wonder if we'll have to wait until after the new faery goes off sale before we see the new MD .

    9. Probably, especially now that they have released more Remaining Story MSDs... So many dolls in such a short time! Thankfully I was safe from the centaurs & the male fairy, and I won't get the new large boy when he is released because I don't collect them, but the new OE MSD is really cute.... Can't though because I still have Amphibel to pay for!

    10. They've released a lot of dolls recently, I'm wondering if this month's guy (it IS supposed to be a guy, right?) might be something big and they're stalling for time? Similar like what happened with Epidos.

    11. I'm getting more and more crazy with Soom dolls:drool and I'm planning to get 2 supergems and join the club) I need a lot of money:XD::lol:

    12. This thread's gotten surprisingly quiet recently.

So we have a nice smexy dark fella this month! Hoping they release a grey (or other dark color, even!) girl this year, I really want an "evil" lady, even if it's just a female version of Monzo or Bazael. I would love love love a dark, plum colored girl, or especially a RED girl!

    13. Whew! I think I'm safe! Now I can save for the next SG girl... fingers crossed for a dark one ;)

    14. Ok.... I am LOVING those wings! I am safe since I don't collect male dolls, but I might have to join a split to get hose gorgeous wings!! Do you think they will be able to attach to some of the other dolls?

    15. I wonder if this will mean we'll see a light girl...I keep hoping they will switch it up. They came out with an unseelie male fae before they released an unseelie girl fae. I feel like it's almost sexist! So I'm going to go ahead and hope for a dark SG girl after the next round of tinies or whatever their pattern is now!

    16. I am really hoping for a dark girl too.... but I kind of figured that the male for this month would be dark. Hopefully next month they will make light tinies, and then in July a dark girl and after whatever the next round of tinies are they will make a light boy, that way we will have one of each for both.

    17. Hah, I was kinda hoping for a Light guy this time around, but maybe it's for the better because I'm feeling particularly weak right now towards some kind of a big angel dude. More time to save up monies?

I'm actually hoping for two of each - going through the combinations, in 6 months we should be able to have one of each kind (light/dark male/female/tinies). So then maybe a repeat of the light/dark theme with new designs and variations? (I'm guessing there would only be one SG and one MG male per theme though)

Can I just make one tiny complaint? I wish Soom would find a few more artists to do their head-sculpts. Perhaps give some of their Young Artists a chance? Starting with Chalco, nearly all of their big boys (this also includes the later Idealians) have had incredibly similar faces - particularly around the nose/cheek/lip area. Don't get me wrong, I love Soom dolls. Their limiteds have continued to be outstanding and very original, but I feel like with every male doll has almost the same face and I... usually buy the doll based on the face alone. It's a very nice facial shape and all, but I was looking back over to Sard or even Chrom and realized that the reason those grabbed me so much was because of their unique faces. Their girls all look pretty different, so why can't the boys?

    18. Well, there's going to be a constant war between what I like to call 'house style' and the fact that the artist that did Sard and Chrom's no longer working for Soom (sadly). So there is always going to be something of an overall similarity, like I find the Iplehouse boys all look like cousins, or I can spot a Dream of Doll sculpt a mile a way, that's the Soom look, you will, and the boys feel it. But will we see quite the level of originality that we had with the 2008/early 2009 sculpts? I have loved some of the later sculpts, but I think I'd agree with you that they need to really highlight their young artist program and branch out a little. I wonder if they're not stretching things a little thinly as well with so many lines going at once.

That being said, I think this guy has some serious babe potential, and I can't wait to see him full-on either. ;) Another part of the equation for me is the default face-up, and I think some work could be done in that direction as well, but Soom's always going to be very much in my heart, sigh, and deep in my wallet. :sweat

      .hlp

    19. I have to agree. If you have one artist doing them then there are bound to be some similarities. Also, I agree that with so many dolls being released it will be harder and harder to come up with different head sculpts that look completely original and not like some of the others. But, maybe they will be able to get some more artists working on these sometime in the future. The similarties for the time being don't bug, but then like you said it isn't so much in the girl molds and I don't collect the guys. ^-^

    20. Heidi, do you have a link for the artist leaving? That's really sad news. :(

But as for house style, Jung Hye Eun seems to be responsible for it, for good or bad. He sculpted the very original Sard and Chrom, but also the very "Soomy" Ender, who looks a heck of a lot like IDealian York (and others...). Soom has not listed the sculptors of any of the Idealians on the site, so whether they've changed styles (from the very original looking Branon and Pangen to the more "Soomy" Gluino, Photon, etc.) due to a change in sculptors or a change in style isn't clear. But it's true that Branon and Pangen did not sell well, and the later guys did. So maybe they are sticking to what sells over branching out in new directions. If so, I think they are misreading their audience. IMO the early IDs didn't do well because it was a new line, not because of style. But the bottom line ($) speaks loudly...
