[Soom MD/March] Shonki & Appini Bestia Animo!

Once i get home I'll see about trying some mockups with a different faceup lol I'm still at work and brewing over the decision of buying or not buy etc. I'm goin to try and decide tonight so I can get things rolling faster.

 

I fell too hard this time and will get an Appini head in split. I think these kitties are cute, though the black is maybe something too different. I think in the first published pic Shonki was looking more cute than Appini, but not anymore.

Does anyone know, do these names have some meaning or are they just names? I am always interested about what´s behind names.

And I must say the teapot-fox story sounds interesting. Maybe Soom was meaning these kitties to be something close to fox anyway? Close enough to transform them a bit.

 

Pug-nosed KITTIES! What a surprise, well, now we know that the tinies and SG's won't necessarily be the same. xD For those of you wishing they were foxes, this Y!J seller makes fox ear/tail sets. ^_~

I'm a bit disappointed in them too. Shonki's presentation surely does her/him injustice (no lips??). But I bet s/he'll look waaaay better in owner pics! And it seems to me that Soom is focusing a little to much on "form" over "function" these days: Afi/Ai's and Chalco's legs with limited mobility . . . Breccia's lack of ankle joint . . . and now these. Soom, I do not like this trend. My Hati's feet can pose so cutely with that ankle joint! ;_;

Though they look to have good stability and normal TG leg posing, so I can live with the lack of ankle joint. I rather like that super-cute face, and I've been wanting another pawed tiny for ages! And I'm not about to hold out for another one with an ankle joint. Who knows how far away that will be, especially if their sales are lackluster. >.<

 

Drat! I go out for a grocery run and miss a complete set of pussy parts in the MP!
Surely someone out there just wants the heads, right?

 

I'll always love Shonki, it's just the lack of blushing and faceup that threw me off. I mean, I bet Shonki looks better BLANK than it does with the default faceup/blushing..At least I know what not to do for a faceup on Shonki. =__=

 

To everyone who is expressing disappointment in the blushing/faceup on the black resin--

I have a very dark doll. He was handmade, was supposed to be bright red, and ended up a purple-black melange because the dye wasn't measured correctly (or something, not sure). Ask anyone who tried to face him up (and there were several)--you CANNOT go insanely bright on resin that dark. You have to go muted, else it just looks ridiculous. Trust me on this, since I do have one. He has a very subtle faceup (with WHITE eyebrows, ohnoez) and it gives him character.

Also, must every Soom tiny be coated in paint and chalk dust and tons of Mardi Gras fantasy glitter before it's loved? Seriously, sometimes simple is better, and I think in the case of Appini and Shonki, less is more.

I personally have purchased them both, with only faceups on the open-eyed heads, as I have a friend who would go squealy at the chance to paint the sleeping heads and possibly the body blushing. But I like a face on a doll, so I didn't opt for blank. I have a feeling I won't be disappointed.

 

Sorry to say that, but compared to Hati & Skoll, Shonki & Appini just look really uninspired. I mean Hati and Skoll were received badly when they came out, but you can clearly see the potential. When I look at Shonki & Appini, the potential is not visible for me. Maybe it's because they are "just cute" and do not have that "I'm cute, but can be a bad-ass"-look that Hati and Skoll had. And I can't get over that nose-mouth area *sigh*.

 

It's likely they are sticking to how they released MD's last year: Heliot (Chalco)
Amber (Breccia) Glot & Glati (Shonki & Appini) Cuprit ( ? ) So most likely
another female SG is up next, or else a male but seems likely they will be feline.

I really hope they get more mobility NOT less!! It's my biggest sore point with
Soom...the lack of good joint system like double joint. And now it seems like
they are going backwards. My guess is that they don't want to hurt the
esthetics of the body with double joints, which do often look strange.
But on baby fantasy parts it feels almost cheap to give less & less.

Please everyone stop saying how shonki could be cute with better makeup
and blushing ....I can't get her!!!

 

Actually in Japan, foxes are kitsune while tanuki are raccoon dogs (sometimes tanuki is translated as "badger" too), a completely different animal, though both are known for the trickster natures and shapeshifting abilities.

In the Japanese folktales I'm more familiar with, it's a usually a tanuki who changes into a teapot rather than a fox.

As for Shonki, I'm surprised that Soom went so completely minamilist. I understand the difficulties in painting such a dark (black!) resin, but it really does look like 10 minutes' work with a white watercolor pencil with regards to the faceup. I agree with everyone else--at least paint the lips!

 

I am not exactly sure I understand how 'just cute' is uninspired.... I personally find cute inspiring, just in a different way.

 

I know that you can't go over insane and glitter the heck out of a black dolls face, but some gold/silver/bronze anything would have looked better than strictly white. I've ordered both as well, just blank. I would have preferred the original Shonki with blue eyeshadow. It was faint yes but at least it was a different colour. Having white eyebrows with it would have looked fine but since Soom just used completely white it kinda looks boring.

It bothers me how Shonki doesn't even have blushing at all. Appini has a subtle blush (I can see purplish lavender) and I would have liked that on Shonki. I can't wait 'til mine is here and I can experiment with what colours will look not ridiculous on black resin.

 

Yes, you are right. I really like cute dolls and I like to have them in my doll family, but I esp. like Soom because they were one of the few companies that make tinies that look cute-but-also-mature/bad-ass. I'm not saying that I don't like Shonki and Appini, they are just not for me. Maybe I would have bought them (even if they are "just cute"), if they had a different nose-mouth area.

 

I understand XD I am a total sucker for little pouty lips so Appini is perfect for me. I am also a total sucker for a doll with a defined philtrum. It always bothers me when they leave that off...

 

Gah, Shonki is starting to grow on me. I want to get one of these kitties to be a familiar, and a black cat would be perfect! Of course, I am tempted now to get both and swap their parts (human and cat) to get a black & white kitty. >.<

And its funny, I rather like Shonki's lack of blushing; heck, I'd probably even order it! But then, my Hati's parts are blank and I like it that way. And I think I figured out what was bugging me so much about Shonki's faceup on the OE head. The eyelashes that are attached are the wrong color! xD But noticing that it costs less than a normal faceup, I don't think its so bad anymore.

 

I kinda want the kitty parts, but the faces aren't doing it for me. And I think I rather have bodies for the many heads I have here...so I think I am passing.

 

to buy or not to buy, I was nearly sold on the black kitty but now I've seen full pics I don't like it!
I do love the white skin kitty but I'm still undecided on whether I want to buy or not yet...

 

I find that they have a very mischievous look Sometimes for me, less is better. I kept them bookmarked simply because of that XD Me thinks that soom didn't give Breccia a resin tail is because resin tails on a doll that big can be very heavy and posing would be an issue.

*Cries* I just got home and missed almost all of the pussy parts for Appini!

I really hope people do more splits later . I have perfect ideas for the kitty parts. Also I'm debating getting Shonki parts instead of Appini's to make little multi-coloured hybrid tinies! I'm just worried that I won't like them and then I'll never be able to get the white parts .

Gah...silly school . I'm dying and keep updating the MP every few minutes >_<

I can understand fully that these two are different from previous tinies, and that's disappointing for some, but no one is making you buy them.

Just because SOOM placed their inspiration in a real life myth and clothing design does nothing to cheapen the quality and beauty of the dolls. If that's the plan this year, putting their own spin on real life myth that is, then I'm looking forward to it greatly!
