Sooms new Elemental Babies! (Speculation)

Feb 27, 2009

    1. MagicBunny, if there's one thing I think I'm actually good at, it's the composition of an image! I'm the same with both photography and film making. People always say that I set up a shot well!
My problem though is a) I fall back on the same techniques (night time with controlled lighting) and b) I tend to always do close ups/extreme close ups.
I can of course frame a shot fine whether it's a long shot or close up, but with dolls at least, I'm definitely so much better with closeups!
I think this is more a problem with my surroudings (always taking photos indoors) and the fact that I'm not the best poser with my dolls yet so they often end up looking stiff, which ruins the picture.
Faces though, I know my dolls well and how to get the best out of each of them!
Simply put, I need a lot more practice! I need to leave my comfort zone and try new things!

Anyway, the reason I think Soom Japan is out of sync is, at first I think it was just because they couldn't get Chrom over here in time and much of the Japan sales are from people actually seeing the MDs in the store.
Then I think they realized it staggered their orders a little. For example, all the English site pay up front orders generally come in during the first 2 weeks, then the Japan sales start and they get a couple of weeks of all the pay up front Japan orders.
It was probably an accidental discovery, so now they're just sticking with it!

This month though the store is closed for a week due to event preparation, and they're totally redoing all the shop displays (there is now NO ROOM for new MDs!), so it makes sense that the air tinies won't be out until next month here.

    2. I am aching to see the tiny birdies.... and scared as well.
I just finished paying off all the dolls I have on layaway and for once I felt kinda... free.... and I am afraid I am gonna jump right back in again. XD

Ah, wanna see, but, also don't wanna see! D:

    3. Oh and yes, I REALLY DON'T GET IT. I will never get it.
I'm sure it's just because of the hooves!
My girl is a fairy though! xD She's the Fairy Queen of Dreams while Lilith (Glot) is the Fairy Princess of Dreams.
By their appearance though I'm sure they have a more nightmare vibe! ::laughs::

I'm pleased though because I don't really want a doll that EVERYONE has.
I love limiteds! I now only have 1 basic doll. I love them because I like the fact that you don't see them everywhere.
My Glot though I hardly call her limited though as there are more of her around than some of Soom's basic dolls I'm sure!

    4. I know that feeling, I have a Chrom and a Heliot, and every man and his dog seems to have those XD Amusingly, I don't even care that they are limiteds, I just love the sculpt.
Sigh, still no love on pictures yet. /shakefist.
      Bad soom!
Wow, having an actual store must be pretty awesome.. I would probably buy so many dolls if there was a physical store near me.

    5. I think, while there are so many different tastes out there and everyone is different, there are just sculpts that have a MASS appeal and others that break conventions and often don't. It therefore makes sense that some people might just end up with all the more popular MDs. It doesn't mean that they're following the crowd, just that their tastes are similar to that or many others.

On the other side of the coin, while this won't be the case for everyone, there are also certain styles that are in fashion at certain times. As perceptions in time change, so too will the sculpts that end up the most popular (though there are always going to be sculpts with eternal popularity). For example, at one time very natural human like sculpts with, I don't know, giant noses might be in fashion! So everyone runs to that sculpt just because they've seen a lot of that style around!

Cuprit drew the short straw because of her hooves after a long sucession of hooves dolls, plus people were tapped out after buying Heliot, Amber and perhaps also Glot or Glati. Just bad timing on Soom's part I think!

    6. ;A;!!!!!!

      F. MY. LIFE....and bank account, I'm soom'd already.

    7. True Midnite. And popularity too, not just fashion. Like, without seeing a few gorgeous Topaz's around, I probably wouldn't have gotten into her sculpt. So, random advertising elsewhere can affect things :3.
Like, if the new birdies come out, and some famous singer or something has an outfit similar, I could see them selling like wildfire. That kinda thing.
PoorCuprit :( And poor me, less heads to go around!

Argh, baby birdies~! Please please soom, put us out of our misery? This checking every half hour is putting a crimp in my sewing >_>
I'm hoping for something interesting with wigs, too. I love soom MD wigs, and it'd be great to see a really cool tiny wig come out with these. They don't seem to have put as much into the tiny wig details yet.
Oddly enough, they put a lot more into the costumes, than they have on the male SG outfits <_<

    8. I would love to see Topaz's wig.. exactly the same.. just in mini size!! xD
And enough with the natural coloured wigs! GIVE ME CRAZY HAIR COLOURS! xD
I like HUGE ridiculous wigs, or wigs full of glitter and stuff like some of the Souldoll wigs.
The best Soom seems to have done is Topaz's wig, cause it was big and fabulous, then the Beryl/Cuprit/Glot idea with the little beads in the wig - though still that could have been MUCH more than it was!

    9. I'm with you >_<
I liked Ambers wig too, nice colouring and such, wish they'd done more with styling though. And Topaz's wig is just nice :3
A pink soom wig, hotpink or a nice baby pink = nosebleed.
A tiny pink wig happening, would have me buying the doll just for the wig XD

    10. I think that might have been something I loved about Eliv and Iv so much! They weren't boring in the hair department at all! Blue and pink!
I'd have loved to see a more crazy style, perhaps with beads and some of the flowers from the costume used in the wig, but still, they were going in the right direction!

So yes, I hope one of the little birdies is female, grey skin, with a wig in the same style as Topaz but PURPLE.
I would then like claws for feet, special hands and ears, some transparent parts with a purple tone here and there.
Then I would like very fairy-esque clothes like Topaz, glittery eyes, a striking vivid faceup, body blushing in that beautiful pink Soom tend to use when they go grey skin, and then glittery painting for the fantasy parts that aren't transparent (which they tend to do anyway).
THEN, huge big transparent wings - not resin ones but attachable ones around the shoulders like Beyla and Bygg's wings, but this time not made of feathers. Seethrough and shiney and SPARKLY.

I've been dreaming of the air tinies for months and months, I've had a lot of time to think.
This would basically be the PERFECT doll for me.
I'd be ok with WS instead of GS though, as long as we still got a vivid faceup and body blushing.
I think because I have this complete image in my head, Soom really have the potential to disappoint me a LOT here! ::laughs::

They could also though go for something much more natural bird like!
Feathery claws, hands and ears, big natural feather wings in earthy tones and so on.
I'd be SO sad, even if they were still cute!
Natural = not as cool as unnatural aka fairy birds xD

    11. Yeah, the waterfairies did have awesome wigs and colouring. If it werent for their faces, they might be perfect. But once I see some user pics, I might like them. So hard to tell sometimes @_@

What would they make the wings outta if not resin to make them transparent though? I actually like the idea of little seethrough resin fairy wings.

    12. I think a big reason Cuprit sold so poorly was that so many people thought Heliot and Amber were going to be the 'last' MDs. I remember reading in the early Heliot/Amber waiting rooms that some people weren't totally happy with the dolls themselves, but felt they 'had' to jump in and get them, as there weren't going to be any more.

Then the tinies split the market a bit, and the upshot was a lot of very poor Soom fans by the time Cuprit rolled around. The hooves probably didn't help (I remember lots of complaints about those), and I remember a few people claiming she was 'too' pretty (almost vacuous, like Amber... which I can understand, but only at face value - once you see these girls properly, their subtle expressions come through a lot better).

Personally, I adore Cuprit's face - she has a perfect balance of warm (blush, eyeliner) and cool (eyebrows, eyeliner) and neutral (lips) colours. She looks absolutely stunning in every colour. My only complaint about her is that I still haven't worked out how to get her wings to stay on solidly XD

    13. O_o Oh really? That's nuts.. If they stopped the series midway would be pretty awful..
I like the vacuous look myself XD That's kinda why I like they, they feel more.. I dunno. Just interesting.
Also, weird people, buying something just because they are the last T_T
Personally, I'm going to try make my own hooves for my Heliot girl, cos yeah, the blue of the cuprit hooves is not for me :( Wish they'd made them clear.

We are going so off topic XD What are the wings like, and how do they attach? Even with magnets, I imagine they would be top heavy. Is there a way you can attach magnets in say, one or more places to other parts of the wings that are close to the torso? That would give you a good attachment, in a levering way.

Sooo to stay on topic.. Does everyone here usually buy the boy or girl tinies? And how much real difference is there between the bodies and faces for the genders?

    14. So this morning my patients has finally run out....I want pics....now.... *is grumpy*
Part of me wants to want them, because I love tinys... but part of me doesn't as I can afford a soom MD yet... I could borrow money...but that makes me feel bad ...
But I still feel bad for missing Cass.... I need a MD that I adore more then Cass to come along.... Bygg was nearly it but not quite :P

    15. My tiny doll-concepts are mostly girly, but since the boy parts in the tinies are... well, tiny (and easy to chop off mwahaha) the gender alone isn't the wavering point for me. Even more so because the face-molds are exactly the same (ain't it?). So far I've liked the girl versions' outfit/style better so I would have gotten Glot if I had known about BJD when they were selling... :( My incoming (basic) Soom tiny is in a boy's body (liked the wig+eyes better on that version) but I'm making it gender-free.

I really like that you always have two choises with MD tinies, either with two colours or two styles.

    16. You could try painting them, rather than sculpting entirely new ones. It means dealing with the hassle of chipping and retouching, but that would be 100 times easier than making your own hooves (in my opinion, as someone who's just started sculpting and can't imagine trying to make huge, doll-bearing, string-holding hooves).

No magnets, sadly. They attach to a U-shaped frame in the middle, and that frame has eight strings tied to it (two at each 'corner' of the U, and two at the ends). I think I'm supposed to tie them together, with the top four going over her arms, and the bottom four going under her arms (so, basically making loops that sit on her shoulders). But that system makes for really unstable, wobbly wings, which I can't bend or pose easily. So I'm hoping I just don't understand the system XD

Well, I know the bodies are identical except for gender (and 100% identical with Beyla/Bygg, who were neutral gendered). And the heads for all the tinies so far have been identical sculpts, with only different face-ups to differentiate between them. So if you're planning on painting your own faceup, you can just get the gender you want (or even go by outfit/accessories, and swap/mod the body when you get it).

    17. Ah I see. I thought there would be a tiny bit of difference in the head mould or something :3 Means I can choose freely whatever I like then :3 If the body difference gets to me, it should be easy enough to swap with someone later I guess. Hooray for choices!
As for resin: I've just started myself, but I seem to be picking it up easy XD Mostly because I started with the most impossible thing: Eyes. Wow, they're a bastard. I now know why people pay so much for good ones.

    18. Sigh...where are the new Soom babies,I wanna see already. =_=

    19. I'm trying to make myself an equine-type BJD from scratch, so I'm working with Fimo, and then casting in resin. Trying to get joints right and things strong enough to resist the elastic without breaking and without the doll being all floppy is... frustrating, to say the least >.>

    20. what resin are you using? I can't even imagine working on a full doll yet @_@ I'm assuming I will have to vacuum cast to get strong enough resin for doll parts atm. But I'm still at the mouldmaking stage for most things XD
      What size are you making?
Look soom, look at how off topic you are making us go, not showing us pictures!
