SOULDOLL Zenith Chiron Discussion - 70cm Centaur & Human versions

Nov 19, 2008

    1. i think people have to remember that the sculptures need to also make the doll able to stand, if it was in proportion to a real horse, i highly doubt it'd be able to. horses legs are very thin compared to their bodies. a strung resin doll this big needs to have legs that can support the tension of the elastics, or the legs will snap

so the only way to do that is to have huge legs

remember also, that it doesnt have a horses head, but a human torso sticking out, and so it's front is a lot heavier than a horse with a horse head would be, they need to make sure it wont fall forward, so the back part of the centaur needs to be heavy

im pretty sure there is no way to do a proportionate centuar bjd that is functional

    2. Its been done. THere is a "cute" kid like version that has okay (stylized proportions) that stands and its a bjd. Just can't remember the name.

    3. I do agree the resin plays very much a role in what they can give us and what they can't. The weight of a proper draft horse would be extremely tough to balance on ball joints without immediate buckling. Also, cost efficiency is better in a lighter horse body. Probably what's driving the tooth pick torso.

I am most interested in seeing the legs though. Horse legs can make other proportion errors forgivable if they are realistic in posing and graceful in movement. I like the basics so far...as long as the scale is better proportioned than the rough shows... I'll be as content.

I'll leave my nit picking to the horse corral:)

    4. i meant doing a centaur that has a horse's proprotion, the thin legs and huge torso, isn't very possible

i was just trying to explain why chiron is stylized and "unhorse-like" since people were saying how disappointed they are

the kid one is by doma doll i believe, and is a mini, and its legs are thick. its got a cute, chubby stylized look over all, its not proportionate to a real horse or foal, that is why it works

    5. yeah, chiron's legs actually look nice to me, and from the size of them, i bet he can stand like a rock

    6. I love the design. I really like the really stylized, sligtly cartoonesque style of short torso and big legs.... seriously, I'm glad that they went for this style, instead of a thick horse torso. Being a centaur, and lacking the ghorse neck and head, I don't know how much 'in balance' would have been to put the human torso in a massive horse torso too. For me, harmony and proportion > realism.

And I can't wait to see it finished ^^!

    7. I just spotted it while browsing the Souldoll page! I saw Chiron and went "OMG! Centaur!" And I was NOT dissappointed by the production images! I can't wait!

    8. I have to agree that the horse torso part looks a bit undersized. I have no qualms about the human chest part, that looks fine in proportion to everything else, but the horse part could be a bit thicker (and I'm a total horse layman).

    9. Domadoll did the little centaurs. I have one, she stands pretty well, she kicks up one foot a lot, but stands fine on three.

    10. I feel like, regardless of the human torso, it's still massively out of proportion (as pictured -- we'll have to see the final product) with the legs...I think you could make the joint reasonably in proportion with the torso (I mean, think about a thoroughbred's neck - it slims down quite a bit) and still have the legs be shorter or the body thicker, depending.

    11. hmmm i might have to sell my brother and sister now lol anyways this is going to be awesome if only souldoll would give me the doll for my sister. darn lol

    12. I'm really not bothered by the proportions at all. It could very well be that they NEED to keep the size down for balance's sake, as a few have already mentioned. Too much muscle in the front with the human torso attached would probably make the poor thing topple forward...after all, once the human body is on there, that's going to be a lot of resin in the front half of the body. And I really doubt people would be happy if their centaurs consistantly face-planted.

    13. Maybe proportion-wise, it will depend on what kind of face the centaur will have?
Like perhaps, if he had a lithe, dainty sharp face and pointy elf-ears, the slimline horse torso would more suite him...
I think the face might make all the difference. Just me though!

    14. I didn't made it ^^; was just a quote.

I agree with you so much, if this gets tru then really ... its horrible, even for a slim character it looks all wrong, it just doan't look like a horse either >_<
Actually I don't think it could even fit a gazzele, all of the creatures need a place for their lungs to fit in and their gut too , bolth seem to be missing.

yeh well cal me a nitpick but I'm expecting a price over 900 USD , and for that price I'd like a centaur, not a tube with horse legs.
      ( dissepointed yes , Soom Pleaseeeee get in action !!! :...( )

    15. Maybe if the front legs are huge with part of the "chest", it may work. They didn't make only the leg at the shoulder but also part of the chest... might fill him out.

    16. the body doesn't look finished yet to me.
i think that it might look so elongated because it hasn't yet been split into two parts?

so the horse body has some twist to it?
      just a thought... o.o

    17. I completely agree. While I'm not thrilled by the proportions so far I can't say how I feel about the doll until I see it complete. If there is a generally pleasing balance between all of the parts then he should be cool. Souldoll's artists tend to sculpt their dolls to be small headed and willowy compared to other companies, that works with the WIP images so far.

    18. Horses, unlike cats, do not have much if any flexibility to their body/torso. That's why we can ride them. If they did joint the body... [shudders]

    19. Whoopsie! Sorry about the miss quote.

I totally agree with you though. I know it is really all speculation, but I doubt they would release photos of something they were not sort of set on... unless they want to TOTALLY surprise us! Which would be really nice!

    20. I think maybe they release pictures like that to get us to speculate... and if people generally don't like what they're working on, they change things accordingly. Er... maybe?
