Stupidest thing you've ever done with your BJD?

Aug 17, 2005

    1. My doll is black haired. I have a friend who owns a doll of the same resin who also has had black hair.
She told me her doll had never been stained by any wig, red mohair or black wigs.

I trusted her and didn't bother to buy a wig cap.
A month after I got my doll her black hair, her head was of course stained.
98% of it came off with magic eraser and I have now bought a wig cap.

Luckily I haven't had her for long enough time to do stupid things.

    2. I left my doll standing on his own for a few minutes while I was busy with something else, thinking I would catch him if he fell. I didn't catch him, he fell face first on stone floor. He made so much noise I thought I would find his face/chest/hand/arm broken in pieces on the floor. Luckily only his nose was a little dented and I managed to fix it. :sweat

    3. I know I have a whole giant list in one of these threads with a bunch of stupid things I've done with my dolls, but by far the stupidest was at a doll meet.

First, I do have a (stupid) tendency to leave certain members of my collection standing on their own. My (first) DM Kara Klum has face-planted a few times. He's apparently smart enough to turn his head before hitting however, cause he always falls ear-first and I'm always looking for his stupid earrings which fly out everywhere. But hey, no damage!

But anyway, that's how it started. As a local group, we sometimes have themed meetups. At one in particular it was Winter Ball or something like that. Dolls were set up on a table, some dancing (with stands. Yep, not everyone is as much a dumbass as me!), others sitting around a bar and some tables. I had one of my boys standing at the bar, he was leaning on it and seemed pretty stable....and I was elsewhere in the house, so of course he fell. The stupid part comes from the fact that he could have taken out so many dolls with him. Thousands of dollars worth and NONE of them mine. Somehow I got extremely lucky and he missed everything but the desert cart XDD which of course was loaded with dishes and food (doll-food, so at least it wasn't messy) that went rolling all over the place. Also being a Kara Klum, he was perfectly fine (they're sturdy guys). They don't damage easily but I guess they don't like being left alone either. I did learn my lesson finally...so no more faceplanting...I'm sure it's not permanent though. I'll be in here again eventually. :\

    4. I've only had my doll for a week or so, luckily nothing terrible has happened though when I was opening her I took her out right away. I saw that her head cap was off..thought it was kinda weird but I quickly put back on and was going to take her to another room and the head cap slammed on to the tile floor, I was scared it shattered into millions of pieces thank god it was still all in one piece. Should of got the hint that the head cap was loose. >_>

    5. When I ordered my very first doll, I was under the impression it was a girl, and that's what I wanted! But when opening the box, I discovered it was a boy >.< I'm still pretty embarassed for doing it, much less talking about it, but hell, I'm among friends right?

Well, I sent the seller a message, but got no response, so I took matters into my own hands.

I ordered 4 ounces of 2 part epoxy and molded the doll a pair of breasts and stuck them on there. After 12 hours of letting them set, I sanded them down and painted them in a color similar to her skin tone. With the remaining bit of epoxy, I tried to mold a pair of vaginal lips and put it around the penis to make it look less....weird. Well, the epoxy dried too quickly, and wouldn't stick, so... so much for that. The breasts are crooked, misshapen, and the nipples are cockeyed, and even after 3 sandings, they still don't feel as smooth as the resin. But even after all that, I still love that doll dearly, and treasure her all the more, especially now I've made her clothes that hide the abominations on her chest!

    6. Ever have one of those moments that are *palm to the face* Why did I just do that?

So I have been doing a lot of face ups recently and I could not find my Elmers glue for the eyelashes. So in my hair-brained moment I thought hey I know what I can do ....*turns on hot glue gun* This should be ok cause you can hot glue suede them so it's safe. Well after this ridiculous attempt clumping and the mess I just sat there with this stunned why did I think this was a good idea? The doll is fine needed new face up and lots of picking at the glue to get out, but overall fine.

      So my questions to you-

Have you ever done something to your doll you thought was a good idea at the time?

      Was it damaged?

Could you repair it if it was damaged?

      How did you feel afterwards?

    7. lol Maybe the eyelashes will stick on even better now when you next try it :P

    8. Yeahhh....I kinda did something stupid to my Lahela when she got here. I got her all unboxed, wigged, clothed, and shod. Then I did the stupid thing. I'd bought a "watch" for her, but the band wouldn't stretch wide enough to go over her hand. So no big deal, I go to take her hand off. Well, idiot me, instead of taking the 5 seconds to look for the hemostat and a string or something to hold the elastic I decide that my hand would be enough. Just my luck to get a perfectly tensioned-tightly strung EID! I managed to get the watch on but couldn't hold on to the elastic and so it and the s hook shot into her arm. >.<

The doll was not damaged. Luckily the s hook isn't small enough to go into the arm channel, and the s hook didn't scratch the resin. I found my hemostat (2 seconds -facepalm-) and was able to pull it out and re-attatch her hand.

    9. Have you ever done something to your doll you thought was a good idea at the time?
Sanded my girl's chest so I wouldn't need to have her in a bra all the time.

      Was it damaged?
It doesn't look good.... Uneven, poorly done... and I know it's repairable with putty, but it's not the same, and she's not in perfect condition anymore.

      How did you feel afterwards?
I was like "great!" after, but now it's like "I should have either done A) a better job or B) gotten it done by someone else or C) sucked it up and gotten a bra."

    10. Have you ever done something to your doll you thought was a good idea at the time?
Yeah... I was once playing with my doll, and happened to be holding her directly over her metal box where I store her accessories. Naturally, I dropped her, and a brief coniption ensued. I picked her up, and saw, to my horror, she had a black mark right. On. Her. Face. Oh crap. So, to rectifiy the situation, I grabbed (without thinking) the bottle of nail-polish remover I had sitting on the table nearest me, and a Q-tip. I applied some of the nail-polish remover to her face, in the hope that it'd remove that hideous black gash. Well, it did. It also removed a small amount of blush on one of her cheeks, and a wee bit of MSC on her nose.
Was it damaged? As I said, the nail-polish remover successfully erradicated that black mark, but also removed some of her blush on the one side of her face where she'd taken the hit, and some MSC on her nose. The damage was minor, barely noticeable by even the most discerning of individuals (according to a friend), but yeah, it's safe to say I regretted it massively. She has since then, for different reasons, received a custom face-up. To me, she looks so much better than she ever did, and the bottle of nail-polish remover and her accessory box are no longer within the immediate vicinity when I play with her.
How did you feel afterwards? Relieved I'd removed the offending spot successfully, and--in general--rather stupid for keeping that metal box below her in the first place (never mind the whole nail-polish remover episode).

    11. Have you ever done something to your doll you thought was a good idea at the time?
Yep, after wading through all the threads about whether to use acetone/non-acetone remover for a face-up, I decided to use a non-acetone remover. I had remembered that everyone said never to use a coloured remover because it could stain the dolls face. I couldn't find a colourless one, so I picked up a pink one. After all, my doll's resin was already slightly pink, a pink remover wouldn't stain right?
      Was it damaged?
Wrong. My dolls head became a rosy pink colour, in stark contrast to her head-cap and body, and seemed to half melt the original msc she was sprayed with back at the factory. So not only was she pink, she was MORE pink in other places on her head, a bit like a teenager with bad acne.
      How did you feel afterwards?
Really annoyed and angry with myself. She was my first doll, and I basically ruined her. I feel upset every time I look at her now.

    12. Chobittum, I basically did the same thing, but with blue-tinted nail polish remover, lol. I managed to fix it with windsor-newton brush cleaner, but it took a lot of soaking & scrubbing.

    13. Have you ever done something to your doll you thought was a good idea at the time? Yes, mostly cosmetic things like face-ups, wigs gone horribly wrong, outfits that never should have been, a few ill-conceived fastener ideas.

Was it damaged? Not really. The only 'damage' was a little scuffing on Aisling's skull from rubbing against the wall when her wig slipped.

Could you repair it if it was damaged? Yeah, a little elbow grease and a Magic Eraser and it was fine again.

How did you feel afterwards? Mostly just irritated.

    14. Chobittum - I almost want to cry reading your post, I can't imagine being sad everytime you look at her :(
though... I can see myself doing something similar (well not now) and hey at least it wasn't blue...

    15. I wired the legs of my Minifee and what a fiasco. The ends of the wire scratched the inside of her joints and they wouldn't stay put and, bless her, she just looked miserable. I took them out and gave her a cuddle for being such a bad dollie mom. I'd rather have her kicky than scratched up.

    16. Chobittum, I hope you didn't give up on her! I'm sure she can be fixed with a little bit of hard work.

Also, for future reference, skip polish remover altogether and use a high-percentage rubbing alcohol. It works perfectly!

    17. Oh my gosh, it's heart-breaking isn't it! I have some windsor-newton brush cleaner on order, hopefully it will arrive soon.

    18. here's hoping she can be de-pinked Chobittum! so far, i don't dare do anything with my dolls other than make clothes and try not to drop them

    19. Chobittum, I had a dream like that. I dreamed I was giving my doll some really red (and awful) face up for some reason, and I noticed the head was cracked. I was really relieved to wake up, and both my dolls in good condition.

Maybe you might want to hunt a little more for that non-acetone remover; it might take the color off. I figure if it was non-acetone remover that brought on the stain, re-hydrating it might help it come off.

It's hard to search for answers about non-acetone remover staining things; most of what I get is that you need to use non-acetone remover to remove nail polish from things... but that's not the case here.

I don't know if it's safe at all, so if someone can correct me, please do
, but have you thought of putting the head in some soapy water? Maybe let it sit for a little while, and then get ready to do some scrubbing. My train of thinking is that most dish soap can remove a lot of things, and claim to keep dishes white, so I figure it can help take the stains off the resin. Again, I don't know if this will work, it's just a hypothesis.

    20. I know right! No I got all the glue off thank goodness but still I was like why did I do this?
