Surprisingly Positive Things People Have Said!

Oct 7, 2007

    1. I was running a D&D game for my friends this weekend, and we have one guy who plays with a large group of female friends, which has got to be awkward enough for him as it is, but then most of us are also doll owners, and there are usually a couple at the table, sometimes dressed as our characters.

Anyway, I had one out at the table, because I was showing off the new rainbow dread wig I'd made for her, and to my surprise, he spent the entirety of one of the games holding her, cuddling her, even stealing my camera, and taking a bunch of adorable pictures of her! I'm so used to guys seeing them, and snickering about how anatomically correct they are, but he was instead blushing because he could sort of see through her shirt, and he kept playing with her clothes and her hair, and making her look great.

He kept moving, so I didn't really get very good pictures, but I had to snap some!

The rest of the group just decided that the Pukis were the cutest things they had ever seen, and when I uploaded my digital card, I discovered that they had taken this picture with my camera while I thought they'd been preparing for combat! ... apparently they thought the PongPong should roll for Initiative, too.

    2. I've had a few , though my favorite has to be when my co-workers at GameStop (all guys xD) remembered one of my boy's birthdays and told me to tell him Happy Birthday! It just made me grin so badly for the rest of my shift.

    3. I took Yuu to work the other day to take some pictures and a couple of women who work with me looked at her in aw saying 'Oh, she's so beautiful!' 'So well dressed, what details!' and one even said 'Her thighs are so slim! That's nice' XD

    4. My mom is really against spending money on a doll but I showed her a few today and I was so happy when she started fawning over all the dolls I was showing her. I think she almost died of shear cuteness overload when I brought up the Puki's :D

    5. A friend of mine came over today, and she usually enjoys making fun of people. I had my dolls sitting on my nightstand in direct sight, and so I fully expected her to make more than a few smart comments about them.
To my shock, she let out an 'Awwwwwwwww!', ran over, and immediately began fawning over them saying how cute they were. She said she saw them on Deviantart all the time and thought they were adorable :) I offered to let her hold the one she seemed smitten with, but she was wary to hold him due to how costly she'd heard of them being :sweat

    6. My favorite moment was taking Bi ( KDoll Kill_U SP ) to Sakura Matsuri ( a wonderful cherry blossom festival in spring! ) in a pretty kimono. I was carrying him while I looked at the huge display of traditional japanese dolls when I was swarmed by adorable little old women! They all wanted to hold him and were going on and on about what a beautiful asian doll he was and even had him sit with their dolls! It was so sweet and I was so honored they found a bjd to be so wonderful. One proclaimed "Oki desu ne?! ( "Isn't he big?!" ) LOL so cute!

    7. I was surprised when my mom said she thought they were very pretty, I thought she'd find them a bit strange... And than even my husband started planning on how to equip my doll... Small things, but they count :sweat

    8. I love going to the doll meets in Birmingham :D We almost always have people come over and ask what they are and say how pretty they are ^_^

One time these two guys who had come over from Ireland were asking loads of questions and wanting to take pictures with all our dolls, and they said "that's the weirdest thing I've ever seen" but they meant it as a compliment  I was very happy ^___^ <3

Another thing was when my mum saw my Puki, and was actually really sweet about her ^__^ My dad even had to admit she's cute! :o Jaw-dropping for anyone who knows how my dad feels about my dolls

I love it when people randomly say nice things, it gives you such a lift ^__^

ETA: Oh, and Sparrow - I WANNA COME TO YOUR D&D SESSIONS D= I miss rping :sweat And it's so cool you take your dolls along too!! ^____^

    9. My mom didn't like them at first but now will listen as I ramble on about stories and stuff LOL.

I think the most surprising ones were out of my doctors and therapists...they love my dolls and I get requests to pop off Lua's faceplate and show how her hands come off and stuff.

It makes me feel better about the whole hobby in general.

    10. The first person I told about getting a doll was my Mum and she instantly poopooed the idea ofc cos I was very upfront about the cost.
But the next morning and everyday since she has been encouraging me to do things towrds getting the doll and getting excited about the idea of making clothes

And my brother, god bless him, the moment he wandered in and saw me lookign at the doll I want on the site he was like 'she's so real, I can't wait for you to get her' I was like o.O but he is a model car kid so he gets the draw of such things I think lol.

The friends I have told minus one or two are all like 'go for it' though, in fact I got one considering the hobby as well :D

    11. After telling nearly all my family, and getting pretty tired of the same, negative response.. I finally told my Aunt, and was very surprised by her reaction. "It's stunning!" All right, she said Jake looks like a girl, but he's stunning! :)

    12. I am just beginning to be interested in BJDs and have my first arriving very soon. But I have a collection of Annette Himstedt dolls. Not long ago, I took one to a local art museum to photograph her outside near the fountains, planetarium, and stonework. Since this is a popular place for wedding photographs and the like, there were quite a few people around at different intervals.

But as I was finishing up, a lady approached me and commented on the beauty of my doll and how fortunate I was to own her. It was nice to have someone recognize fine art and also it reminded me that I am, indeed, very fortunate to own her and the others I have.

    13. I brought my boy to a local con today, and was chatting with another owner (her friends had also brought theirs, so there were a lot just sitting there! xD) when a boy comes up and starts off by saying, "Those are really creepy..." and just as I was about to reply with "So's your face!" he finishes by saying "...but really cool!" It made me smile. C:

    14. I don't know if this counts as a compliment, but it certainly made me laugh out loud. My friend was looking at Darryn, and he said:

"oi, these still creep me out. <_< They remind me too much of ghost in the shell. or Gackt (but prettier)."

      LOL XD

    15. Sparrow, those two pictures have made my day-- both your friend unable to put down your doll, and the Puki with the D20! So /cute/.

I wanted to post about how amazingly enthusiastic my mom has been about my hobby. Now, I'm in my 30s and collect BJDs with my partner. I've never made a secret of them, but it's not like they live in the same house as my parents. However, once my mom found out we were building a family of BJDs, she has been /so sweet/. All our dolls get their own Christmas presents, and they often get mail from her! (Like, actual tiny envelopes, sent through the post.) Every once in a while, she emails me to ask random things (like, when are their birthdays, what are their favorite colors), so she can send presents.

It's really very touching. Makes me wonder if they're sort of like her grandkids. XD

    16. I got a mixed comment at Target: "No offense, but I saw the doll and thought it was really creepy because I thought it was an anorexic infant. But seeing she's a doll, I must say she's beautiful!"

      That's what I get for putting her in the baby seat of a shopping cart, I guess. ^^;

    17. My parents were a little skeptical of me buying a doll at first. I guess they thought I'd have a change of heart right before I bought him or just didn't get why I'd spend so much on a doll.

After I told them that I'd finally ordered him, Mom decided to ask me about "her" to be nice. I told her it was a guy, and that alone piqued her curiosity, but when I told her that he'd arrive naked and hairless, suddenly the two of them couldn't stop asking questions!! XD Then Dad learned that everything about him, from his eyes to his makeup to his body, was changeable, and suddenly he realized that this is a different kind of doll than, say, a porcelain baby doll. :)

Now they're really interested in him and can't wait to see him when he arrives! Plus, Dad, being ever supportive of my artistic endeavors, said that now I'd have a new model for my drawings. It wasn't so much what he said as the way he said it; he was genuinely excited, and it felt great to have that kind of support for something I'm so excited for!

    18. I've been lucky enough to have a lot of positive comments, and only one "Are you nuts?" reaction.

I showed some sculpts to a friend who claims that he wants to make a horror movie about them :P

My brother (who I'm very close to) has no interest in them whatsoever, but when I showed him the MD Jina sculpt I was ordering he said "I know you love the customization aspect of the hobby, and I know your makeup skills will translate well....but honestly that sculpt is a piece of art on its own, it doesn't need anything done to it." Shocked the heck out of me.

My mother is also not a doll person. She was complaining about an afgahn she's been crocheting, saying that it's too heavy to tote around and annoyingly long. I jokingly said "now won't you be happy to do doll hats" and she replied in all seriousness "Yes! but I think I need you to bring one of the heads for reference.." and went on and on planning. It was adorable.

Another friend caught me staring at pictures on my computer and flipped over how gorgeous they were. She also found the price totally reasonable.

    19. My 6 year old cousin had absolutely no interest in my boy when she first saw him (though she loved my girls). When I saw her this past Saturday (at least a month since she last saw them) she randomly asked me "where's your boy doll?" I was so surprised that I had to ask her "you mean the blonde one with the black jacket?" since I had no idea if she might be referring to something else in my house (after all, we were at my grandparent's house and I rarely brought him there- only once on a day when she wasn't there). She seemed a bit disappointed that he wasn't with me when I told her he was at home. It was so cute, especially since she had never seemed to particularly care about him before.

    20. Last year just before Christmas I took out my boy Lucius (DOT Lahoo) with my mum to buy a Christmas tree from a house down the road. We then decided to do some quick shopping so I ended up at the local shopping centre with my big boy in tow :XD: We went into Hallensteins (a men's clothing store) to buy some shorts for my bro, and I was pleasantly surprised at the male employee's reaction to Lucius :o He was really interested in him, and mentioned that his girlfriend loved Asian dolls!

Another time I accompanied my mum to a session she was running, bringing my gray DOT Delphine along. Out of the other people organising it, one of the ladies thought she was 'bizzare', but the man really liked her! He said he knew it was kind of weird for him to like her (not that I thought that!), but that she was really cool and looked like something out of Mortal Kombat or something. I was so happy with his comments :D
