Surprisingly Positive Things People Have Said!

Oct 7, 2007

    1. That's absolutely horrible! >| Some people are just really big jerks.

    2. My husband says the doll thing doesn't appeal to him, and he's unnerved when he finds them lounging in bed with us. He believes it helps me relax, so he's somewhat supportive. Hope this understanding holds up for the doll I have planned for next month.

    3. The guy who sits behind me in my IT class hates the doll and thinks I'm nuts for being so in love with them.
I was looking at the Luts website in class (which I shouldn't have been:sweat). I clicked into the page for Abadon (in the cool red outfit that I love!), and from behind me, he's like "Now THATS a cool doll!!!!"
      I was so happy.:)

    4. For the nth time: that was really mean of them! >: (

I got Sinag back in high school and when I first brought her to school, the reactions were generally nice. Sure some would comment on how her eyes kinda creeped them out, but they would look at her and even try her articulation. One of my classmates was really interested, so I showed her the DoD pamphlet that came with Sinag. What surprised me was that some of my guy classmates didn't mind saying how pretty she was out loud, and weren't shy about asking to hold her and pose her and stuff. They were polite to her too. :)

    5. For me it's not so much as being told that he's 'beautiful' or 'handsome...'

But it's when my mom, husband, aunt and manager show their support. Like everybody, they were a bit miffed with the price (who wouldn't?) but when I showed them the doll and pictures, all I could sense from them was positivity. :)

My husband has always been very supportive, regardless of what I do. He's also agreed to do legwork for me to get doll clothes made from my cosplay seamstress.

I have yet to bring my boy to work, and show him to my manager (she's a lady, BTW). But she keeps asking me how my doll is. My mom has already bought me extra clothes and sewing stuff. My aunt just couldn't stop looking at his pictures.

      I feel loved~ ^^

    6. I've got a funny story. My friend named "Flower Child" (Hannako) was talking about how creepy they were, since we were talking about trends at Deviantart. I told her that I had one and showed her some pictures. The first thing that came out of her mouth,
"I didn't know that they could be cute!" Directed at my Nono and my friends Shushu. "Why can't people own cute dolls like these!"
It was a very conversation after that.

    7. I have a male co-worker who thinks my doll is gorgeous. Also, my husband thinks MSD's have cute butts. :D

    8. catcalawtub: LOL

Kati, it's always shocking when someone totally unexpected compliments your doll. That's awesome. The doll is cool btw XD

    9. I see next to a friend of mine in my creative writing class,

Of course I've mentioned dolls a couple of times, and even showed her pictures once. On a not-so-great day I had, she wrote me a 'secret note' lol. It said that she couldn't wait until I got my doll that they're really cool.

      Best day turn-around EVER!!

    10. OMG! I took Gavalyn out yesterday, his first time in public (not work, that doesn't count for me as most of my co workers...well yeah) Anyway, we had dinner at Mimi's Cafe last night and I had Gav sitting on the edge of the table and one big guy came over w/ his little boy and started talking to me about Gav. It was really nice and the boy was shy...I freaked the man out when I started moving Gav's joints, his jaw dropped.

Then the waitress really adored him and another girl on the way to the bathroom just stopped and stared for a moment before saying "What a cool doll!" then ran into the bathroom. LOL It was good~ :)

    11. Yesterday I went to Little Tokyo with keikonotenshi, Some Revolutionary, and my friend/roommate/yet to give ma a DoA name Cristina. We lost keikonotenshi momentarily in a grocery store but when we found her she was with a man, a woman, and a boy (probably in his early teens I can't remember). They talked to us about the dolls and took a picture of them and left.

Turns out the man told keikonotenshi that they followed us from Weller Court to the grocery store because the woman wanted to see our dolls.

I don't know whether to be flattered or scared. I do vote that they probably shouldn't have told us that they were following us. :sweat

    12. Well, my boyfriend was looking over my shoulder one day while I was on DoA and happened to comment "Ya know, those are really cool compared to your other creepy dolls." ^.^; And my mother actually defended my maturity saying dolls where something that where NOT werid for me to have when I'm a little old lady. Again ^.^; but the intentions are what count. And they both think BJDs are pretty.

    13. Haha my grandma makes the nicest comments about my doll :D Love my grandma. She's the only person who could tell that he was a guy right off the bat, and she was only looking at his floating head, rather than his whole body. Most people INSIST that he's a girl, even after I display definite proof to the contrary.

    14. My mother found out about my interest in BJD when I visited her house one evening and left my laptop on the coffee table while I was showering. When I got out, she told me she flipped through my tabs in firefox and thought that the pictures I had up were "very beautiful." I asked her to be more specific because I have DA up too, and she flipped to the Dollzone tab and pointed at the exact doll I've dreamed of (Yuu2). She said it was absolutely gorgeous and that she thought $600+ (Before the price raise) was a little much for a print of the picture. When I told her that it wasn't for a print, but an actual doll nearly 28" tall, she was delighted and said something to the effect of "I had always hoped you'd get into dolls eventually."

This experience was pretty profound for me because at the time I was still thinking of how I would reveal the purchase to my mother, stepmother and father, even though I don't live at home anymore. The thought of telling them even drove me to swear never to buy a BJD until I was moved off to a place they couldn't visit. My stepmother would be the next to find out.

My stepmother and I went out for dinner one night to celebrate an event I don't remember when she asked me if I'd thought of any new hobbies to occupy my time over the summer. I thought it was a perfect chance to tell her, and to my surprise, she was really interested. When she dropped me off at my complex I showed her Yuu 2 on my laptop and she thought that, though they weren't her style, they were a perfect thing for me to collect, and I got her blessing to collect them as well.

I have yet to tel my father, but I don't think I'll have to. I'll buy the doll and if he wants to know that bad he can ask.

    15. My friend's husband hates dolls. He thinks my Blythes and Pullips are creepy. I brought my Narae down to show my friend, and I told her "your hubby will think she is creepy." But he finally turned to look at her and said "Oh, she is not as creepy as I thought she would be." He actually thought she was quite nice looking. THAT was surprisingly nice for him.

    16. I've read all these posts and I'm just so happy. I was actually sharing stories with my girlfriend, much to her displeasure (and my amusement) as she struggled with a videogame.

We're both into the hobby but I terrify her with my 'OMFG customize/restring/take apart/mod naow' moods since I was into mecha models an age ago. She just wants to buy them pretty and leave them like that.

So far, we only have her girl, Miriam, a Soulkid Miryu, and I adore her. I may have turned a friend off of them who originally liked them. In person, she found Miriam to be so creepy 'cause her eyes track.
( Being mean, I would turn Miriam's face toward said friend/change her poses when she wasn't looking. >>; )
But this is all beside the point!

I am in no way trying to use offensive terms, but I am a super dyke. Okay. I wear guy clothes, I played with action figures, my dinosaurs used to terrorize/eat/maim my barbies. So you get an idea of my image.
And guess what I was doing the last few weeks of school. Sewing little doll sweaters out of socks. Sewing. Sweaters. Doll-sweaters.
My art teacher and student teacher got all crazy-excited that 'omg, a teenager knew how to hand-sew and likes it.' We spent the entire block talking about the associated BJDs and my teacher thought they were the coolest things since ever (she has a few antique collector dolls). And the sweaters were just 'soooo cute!'
I want to bring the Soulkid out to meet her one of these days. =3

    17. Awwwwh, this thread is just so uplifting and happy! :3

Well, honestly I haven't shown my dolls to many people yet because they're still in the serious customization stage, however my dad remarked once that he 'liked the outfits' and thought they were 'incredibly detailed and well made, and you wouldn't be able to buy something like that over here.'

He was remarkably accepting of the price too when he saw them for real the first time, because he said such a lot of effort must have gone into them. I was suprised, because usually he's a bit evil when it comes to spending a lot of money. xD

      I've shown some pics to my friends, and recieved some cautious 'Your dolls . . . they're kind creepy . . . but in a cool way.' So I suppose that's a kind of compliment too. I thought so. ^^;

When I take my dolls out a bit more, I will probably have more to report! *hopes!*

    18. My Nain (welsh grandmother) thinks Gwenllian is lovely, my Taid doesn't say much, but I think he likes her too because he always wants me to stay a little girl (he's one of those grandfathers that hates their granddaughters cutting their hair short!) My parents think my dolls are a big waste of money, but whatever! At least it's my money!

The best reaction I had was yesterday at a toy shop in Conwy. I know owners of toy shops are predisposed to liking dolls anyway, but they really liked Gwenllian and tried out her joints and thought she was amazing. She's the first BJD they'd ever seen too!

    19. last night, i was talking to a good friend of ten-or-so years. i mentioned that i had got another doll and she was surprisingly happy for me. she knows the price, but went on how 'everything nice in life is expensive' and how 'it doesnt matter as long as you spend the money on something that makes you happy'.

i've never had someone say that :? ~ everyone always demands to know the price, then tells me that i've wasted money or what ELSE i could have bought with that money.

so this was the first positive experience; of course when she saw hecate with no eyes and wig she called her 'creepy'... but we just kind of laughed about that one (she does look kind of creepy right now).

    20. I had some friends over a while ago and one of them said she wanted to buy one of those poseable, wooden figures. I got out my doll and told her that BJDs are poseable like the wooden figures, but you can customize them. Everyone thought the doll was so pretty and was reasonably priced for all the work that was put into it.
