Taking dolls to school or college?

Feb 21, 2005

    1. Knew three guys who shared an apartment. All of them went out during the same time, and when they returned, all their laptops were gone. Turned out that one of them stole his roomies' laptops, and took his own to avoid discovery.

Also had one guy return to his shared house to find his roomate hosting a party. He found a guy he didn't even know sleeping on his bed.

You never know about the people you meet on campus. I thought my roommate was a nice girl until she stolen eveyone else's food straight out of the fridge. She even took food that is cooking in the pot.

    2. I'm still sort of on the fence as to whether to bring my boy with me to college. I will be sharing a room with another person and the apartment with three other people, but they won't move in as early as I will(thank you band). :sweat I want to bring my boy so I won't get lonely or anything, but I'm so worried that something bad might happen to him, or that my room/apartment mates will get freaked out by him. I'll probably end up bringing him anyway and just putting him away when they get there until I figure out how they'll react.

Edit/Update: Took Kieran to college, and I found out I have awesome roommates. My roommate isn't bothered by him at all, and the other two girls in the dorm don't care either, and one of them is afraid of dolls(but not of Kieran)! I've had a completely positive experience so far, no worries about anyone messing with him.

    3. I brought a tiny to college with me. He was the only doll I had at the time, and no one ever bothered him. It's been my experience that people usually aren't as interested in personal items. (But if you have a cream soda or deli food, boy, look out!)

    4. I would love to a bjd out in public; but school is just too much!
There are too many nosy people in my small country town. Everyone would be agonizing about how I gained the money instead of the doll's radiant beauty.

    5. Those sound like horror stories to me! @.@ As for me, I know of a lot of stories floating around like that, but I don't actually KNOW anyone who has had things damaged or stolen in a college dorm.

Honestly, if you're responsible and keep an eye out for your roommate, you're probably going to be fine. <3 I keep plenty of expensive articles out and about in my room, an even kept a container with over $50 in change in my closet all year. I didn't have a roommate this year, but my door was always open while I was in my room and often unlocked when I went out--I even occassionally loaned out my room to people who needed a quiet place to talk to each other or on the phone when I wasn't in there. <3
The worst that's happened to me in two years of college was that my complete Fruits Baskets series disappeared (four DVDs) for a few months, then magically reappeared in front of my door at the end of school--and honestly, I think that was just that someone who borrowed it and forgot they had it, then were too embarrassed to return it to me personally.

Even if you don't trust your roommates, you can keep your babies locked up while you're away... Then get them out in the evening when you're around until you learn to trust your roommates. And if you are concerned with your roommate/s constantly having parties while you're not there, or stealing your things, then it's time for a roommate change. @.@" Typically you have several weeks to arrange these without any penalties right at the start of the year.

It's also worth noting that most college dorms have some sort of matching system, so you and your roommate should at least have a little in common! And some schools even have "themed" dormitories, where everyone shares a common interest. The chances that you'll end up with some dope-smoking, sex-craving, uber-partying roommate if you're a shy, dollie-loving internet frequenter are pretty slim!

I think the biggest thing you should keep in mind is that at places like DoA and even in real life, you are probably only going to hear horror stories, no matter how many people go their entire college lives without having a doll damaged or stolen! Unfortuanately, as soon as someone has a problem or has a friend that has a problem, they tend to get here and tell everyone about it... Whereas most people that go an uneventful college year don't really get on and make a post entitled; "NO ONE STOLE MY DOLL THIS YEAR AT COLLEGE! HOORAY!" XD
What I'm trying to say is that even though you HEAR a lot of scary stories, the truth is that maybe only 10%-5% of people have problems... It's just that the other 90% aren't advertising that they AREN'T having problems. <3

Personally, I'll be taking my tiny back with me to school and am going to have my SD shipped straight to my dorm. If all else fails and my suite mates turn out to be terrible, than I can always send my babies back home to the safekeeping of my mom for the year! The same goes for every one else. ^__^

    6. I'm not taking her to my school, because people would see her as a toy, and I would be too scared that they might drop her or something :(

    7. Luckily, I'm still in high school, so I don't need to worry about college dorms and such yet... but as for now, when I get my first doll, I'd probably never bring her to school, simply because... well, there's lots of really un-understanding people and mean people as well :(

    8. Well, there was one absolute acceptation to bringing MY girl to school, we had a new kitten whom ate everything, and i was visiting a friend after school who was willing to learn more about them (bjds) , but my school is evil, and were not allowed to have backpacks so after being torched and threatened to send me home and suspend me, Because i put her in the DZ carrying bag, i showed them what was in the "suspicious bag shaped like a gun", i hid her in my purse, which i wasn't supposed to have, and continued on my way to class, unfortunately i didn't notice her head sticking out and my new names are freak doll girl; dollie; doll freak; etc. but i had to stay after school for Environmental club, and its perfectly safe to take her out because the schools vacant. I'm just glad my girl survived through all of this... let me just say never again will this happen. I do not recommend doing the same as me... I agree with stickymochi .

    9. I have all three of my dolls with me at college for a year and I haven't had any problems so far. Luckily for though, I've known my roommate since I was 6 years old. Even with strangers I haven't had any problems though. I even took one to class with me.

    10. reading through a number of pages here I see that US mostly has room mates and a couple other countries don't.

does any one here have experience in Universities in Canada?

    11. Forgot to mention, more around the Vancouver area~~

    12. Next year I'll be moving to Tokyo... so by default I'll be bringing all my dolls with me and they'll be in my dorm room for the first semester (3 months) ... after that I have no idea if I'll be living in a guest house or my own apartment..

      I'm actually more concerned with moving my dolls (Amber and her ears... ; 3; ) then about the other students that'll be living in the same dorm building as me... ^^;

    13. I was looking around in vancouver last year. I don't remember what UBC had, but the freshman dorms at simon fraser are fantastic (burnaby campus), and mostly singles. (I would've gone there if they had a photography program)

    14. ... UBC doesn't have a photography program? ;___;

      Shucks.
Ah, I was going into acting and sciences anyways |D

thats great to hear about them mostly being singles though, thank you for the information!

    15. Well, I'll be attending McGill University in Montreal for Life Sciences this year, and I was lucky enough (or rather, had high enough grades... apparently they automatically award first choice to people with scholarships) to get a single studio apartment to live in, so Michael is definitely going with me... I'm not sure about Russel simply because that means I have two doll boxes to carry over. But, we'll see.

I don't think I'll be taking either to any of my classes though, it seems kind of pointless. What am I - going to set him up on top of a lab bench to observe my dissections/chemical experiments/calculations? (actually, his character'd love that... but, not happening) I think they'll just stay home, like they usually do. :)

I've brought them to school with me a few times, but they stayed in my ginormo red purse the entire time, since they were only there as a comfort on a specially stressful day. (One time it was three exams... the other time, I was organizing Science fair and stayed at school 8 am to 9:30 pm, with a calculus exam the next day D=)

    16. I'll be returning to the dorms this semester as well, but like in the past, I'm gonna leave my dollies in the care of my family for a while--at least after I get to know my new roommate to see if it's safe to bring them. I've corresponded with her in the past and she seems to be a respectable person, but I'm still wary of her friends (if any) and or the possibility that she may be careless with things. Like forgetting to close the door when leaving the room! Had a roommate constantly doing that before...:doh

    17. I'm taking my MSD boy and YoSD girl with me to school when I move in a month... I'll be living in a suite dorm, so I will have my own room, and plan on keeping them safe in my closet until I get to know my suitemate better. I know one thing's for certain, if I find out that anyone has been going through my closet in my room while I'm gone, all hell will break loose.

    18. I attended Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario for six years, and lived in residence for five of those six years. Ontario Universities are great! But then I'm a little biased, since I have three degrees from one...

I lived in an apartment style rez, with four bedrooms and two bathrooms for one living room and one kitchen. It was amazing, and though I had my individual problems with roommates, I had a lock on my bedroom door, and I've never had problems with things going missing, ever.

    19. I didnt dare take my dolls just cos there are so many drunken idiots around :( i just took lots of pictures and made a collage to look at, it depends how often you are going home though cos i went home alot so it was okay :)

    20. I agree with this.
I'm transferring to another school but even then when I get my doll I'll keep him locked up in my room so that my dogs won't get them, and after high school depending on the college(I'm hoping to go out of state) I guess I'll just lock him up in a safe or something.
