Taking dolls to school or college?

Feb 21, 2005

    1. At my old public school ( I'm home-schooled now due to all the crap I got there ), We weren't even allowed to bring a bag no bigger than a small purse that could only hold a cellphone and your house keys. :T Any bag bigger than that would be confiscated. So bringing my dolls would've been VERY hard to do. Besides, my school was full of violence. Fights everyday, things being stolen in every class, I was often pushed and shoved to the ground for being "different", and my teachers, except my awesome science teacher who was recently fired for not being strict with rules, hated me. They wouldn't even let me read a manga for free time. We could only carry binders and the lockers were always sold out. I never had a locker for the three years I was there. Which, was also a health risk for me since I would have to carry my large binder for 7 classes, plus a large textbook to every class. Since I had no locker and backpacks were banned on campus, I had to carry all seven textbooks every day. Adding a BJD to that, I'd be cruntched or he would fall and break. Not risking that.

    2. I'd never bring my doll to school. I don't trust anyone there.

    3. i took her to school today and my friend was like :"bubblewrap mummy!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    4. im sure i posted in the thread before..

I love my school. I honestly do. Ive brought my dolls to school probably.. over 50 times between 10th and now 11th grade. Nothing has been broken, stolen, damaged or anything. A few people made fun of me at first. but being me, i dont care.. and everyone whole hates them ignores them now. lol

    5. I wouldn't bring my doll to school because I can't think of an excuse for it. I'm a Cognitive Neuropsychology student--why would I bring dolls to class? If I were a film, art or animation student I could take my dolls to some classes and say they're my subject pieces. But I'm not.

    6. So far I found i taken my to schol quite a bit c:
      but mostly for photograhy class ^^;
He still gets lots of "She's so pretty" comments and whanot~
      but he's never a real distraction c:

    7. I would bring my bjd to school and I couldn't care less if people stare at me but I'm afraid people will do mean things to her and she might get broken or w/e but I still might bring her to school

    8. I allready take my MSD dolls with me too shool ^^

my classmates where a little bit confuesed when they saw them the first time.
but know they like my dolls ^^

    9. I would love to bring mine with me, but even though I'm an upper year, I still live in residence with first years (in my own room, but still...) so I'm kinda uber-paranoid about losing him/having him stolen/getting him damaged.
I might be buying a puki at the end of the summer though and would def. be bringing her back with me... she'll be small enough to fit anywhere

    10. I see absolutely no reason to actually bring a doll of any size to class with you unless it was for a specific project in which you required them. For example, I've brought one my dolls to school twice, once for an English project when we were all required to bring in an object we felt represented ourselves, and the second time for when I was doing an informative speech and my topic had been BJDs. Both times I was required to actually have a physical object to show.

Otherwise, when I read posts about people complaining of their classmates touching/grabbing their dolls or the rude looks they get, all I can think is, 'what do you expect when you bring such a needless object to class?' Sure, it's not exactly an excuse for bad manners, but likewise it seems very rude to bring along a toy with you that can be very distracting when instead the point of class is to focus and learn.

    11. I bring mine to my internship and I brought it once to a class of mine but that was because ppl wanted to see it and I just don't care my teacher was my internship instructor and had already seen a doll of mine so I figure no one is gonna steal soemthing that is in my posession the entire time and no one is gonna break something that i'm holding onto so yah.

    12. I could not remember did I bring it to school but I did at work in Sunday..not official working hours..I would not take it out if there is someone near who I am not fond of..I dont like putting them into gossip at all..

    13. I really don't see any reason in taking my dolls to my high school. I move from building to building carrying my backpack and books, so I wouldn't know what to do with them if I brought one. I trust my classmates enough, but I'd be absolutely paranoid all day, regardless if I had them in my hands or in my locker (is someone on top of my locker? Did someone break in? etc.) If I had a tiny-tiny (like, Puki-sized), I might take it just for fun. SDs and MSDs would just get in the way and distract me from school in every possible way. :P I can definitely appreciate your interest in breaking out of the mold per se, but they seem like an unnecessary load on my already tiring day. I think I'll stick to taking them to cons and maybe the mall where I can keep an eye on them. :)

    14. I took my doll to school recently. Some people loved him (one friend even proclaimed that he was our love-child, and thus HER BABY), but many others were freaked out. There is a girl in my choir who has a downright doll-phobia. When my choir teacher was holding him and proclaiming how cute he was and how much she loved his shoes (my choir teacher is awesome) the girl was covering her face and looking away. So I told my teacher I would have to put him away, she was sad :(
I don't blame people who have a doll phobia. It actually is because of a hard-wired response called "uncanny valley" when people see something that has some human features, they make it more human in their head, and see the things they have in common. When something looks very close to human, but is not quite, people only see the things that are different.
I find that my doll tends to win people over more then he scares them off. I think I will take him more places as well. He won over my mom brilliantly. Today I was handing him to her and said "Take this" and she corrected me "I will take him" Mom is funny.

    15. I'm not sure about taking my doll every where but, I would definitely take her to work with me, only because I know she wont get damaged there. And maybe I'd take her out when I'm with my friends. As far as what strangers say about it.....I don't really care.

    16. I don't see the point in trying to get people to "get used" to dolls. That's kinda ... forcing your hobby on someone. That being said, I'll take my dolls out if I want to but I don't expect people to NOT stare, etc. It's a hobby that you don't see everyday.

    17. Been quite a few years since I was in school. But I don't think I would bring any BJDs with me, didn't have any at that time anyway. I did have my Sasha Dolls {German doll from the 60s & 70s}. Wouldn't have taken them either. None of my friends even really knew my interest in dolls or collecting them. Mostly because I didn't want to be teased on the subject and I was already weird enough without adding more fuel to the fire!

Fast forward to today. Yes I do take my dolls out with me sometimes. Not so much now because going out involves a two year old...keeping an eye on my dolly children and a human child is too much for my brain. I think I get more strange looks now because I am grown woman with a doll...if I were a teen I think people wouldn't raise an eyebrow so much.

I love my dolls and I don't care what anyone thinks...they aren't creepy.

    18. i dont mind taking my doll to school, have already done so a couple of times;3
dont really like bringing them cuz of the stares i get from curious passer-bys on the way to school but whats a little sacrifice to having you loved one close to you? ;D

    19. I would probably bring a doll to school once in a while, but then again, I'd just be too scared of people screwing around with it. Teenagers don't know how to handle things gently! D< If it was a small doll, maybe a Puki or MiniFee or whatever, I'd bring them, something I can stuff into my bag, but I feel it'd be a little too risky, even if my school is an art school, and people don't generally judge/bother others. Also, I'd feel a bit more comfortable if one of my friends brought their doll, as well. xD

    20. yeah i took once my doll to school, some of them have seen pictures of my doll, and when finally i got him to school (because of a project about lifeline) they, were all like "isnt he higher" and i was like WTF he's one of the highest you can get, and other comments like "is it a girl??" woot, from that time i would not take my doll to school =.=''
