That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. My biggest turn-off is single-jointed elbows. I don't have much of a problem with the knees being single-jointed if it's a doll I really love, but I at least want my doll to be able to touch its face. I'm also not a fan of childish MSDs, as all of mine are supposed to be adults.

    2. I have many! XD I'll just list a few...

Short pectorals, don't know what's the deal with them (the taller the "person," the longer the pecs – I get it in "children" and overly stylized sculpts
but in the more realistic ones it seriously turns me off!).
Thin necks coupled with wide-jawlines; I don't mind super long necks as they can always be modified if they are too long but thin necks are hard to fix and to me
they don't look good (more so when the heads are massive and/or have super wide/strong jawlines – especially if the sculpt is realistic-ish).
Narrow shoulders, I prefer broader bodies in general just for the sheer size of most of the heads available, it would make a huge difference
in how I take photos if most of my dolls had broader shoulders/bodies. Not chubby or bulky/thick like the Iple males, just wider bodies that look
like they can hold the massive heads the have on their shoulders.
The last and most important one that probably has kept me from purchasing possible bodies for my "grail-doll" is that torsos are so short/tiny
compared to the length of the legs. I like long legs as much as anyone who's short but I don't like tiny torsos paired up with 2-mile-long legs,
      why can't there be a nice balance? T__T;;

    3. Seconding/thirding/whatevering the mention of most vampire teeth when poorly sculpted. I usually love toothy molds because I think it's adorable when done right, but a good portion of vampire dolls I see have the 'playdough teeth syndrome' where it's as if someone just plopped some triangles on their face. I liked the little pokey teeth that melded into the lips of the CP vampire sculpts, but I've seen some that are bordering on the edge of disturbing with how amateur they're done rofl : (.

My other turn off on molds I otherwise really like, is when sleeping heads have eyelashes that are glued in to stick staight up. Love sleeping heads, and I'm sure the eyelash problem is just an accident, but...when they are these really thin spidery lashes that somehow migrate to a near vertical position, it looks so awkward.

    4. I'm open to a lot of different kinds of dolls. And Ive found that there was dolls I fell in love with in person that I never considered to be my taste before. So I guess my only dolly turn off is 'white resin'.

I do enjoy looking at dolls with white skin, especially when it yellows just a bit and looks nice and creamy.
But I have owned 2 white resin dolls and I sold both, because I just felt like I couldn't enjoy them.
I loved my vamp Shiwoo to pieces, but when I went to a convention he seemed kinda greenish and it made me sad. I dunno, I just like the way normal skin ages and I don't have to panic about any daylight.

But that is just my personal taste! I never would have gotten a white resin doll at first if so many weren't so gorgeous! ;)

    5. 1)When boy dolls are very muscular on very thin bodies with baby-like faces XD (some minifees come to mind and the big dolls from DOD) it just looks weird.
      2) Those kissy lips, pouty faces on most female dolls are a big turn off too!
      3) Vampire dolls.......I love vampires but the ones I have seen in dolls are...disappointing. Those 2 tiny teeth means the doll is a vampire? *laughs*

Those are the only reasons why i would not purchase a doll. (except for #1...I could buy only the head if I like it and put it on a more suitable body).

    6. Very young or effeminate faces on super muscular bodies. It just looks kind of incongruous and if I want a boyish doll, I would prefer he be a bit thin. That and I loathe six-packs. The more they look like a chocolate bar, the more I hate them. Some ab definition is alright, but super-defined six packs are a no-go.

Quinlan's fantasy doll body "button nipples" drive me insane. If he wasn't clothed all the time, I would have sanded them off by now. Well, I also can't put him in tight clothing because you can see the button nipples...

Too thin necks. They look kind of bobble-headed and not-quite-right to me. >_> I talked myself into buying a much larger doll than I intended over this...

    7. gigantic breasts and/or flat butts.
it depressed me everytime I looked a pictures of soom boys from the side. you just don't know where the leg ends and where the back starts xD

    8. So many things... I can't pick just one either... XD

Ugly joints is usually a dealbreaker. There are a lot of joint types that I hate, specifically within double-jointed designs. One that's especially bad is the 'bean' joint that doesn't look AT ALL natural when bent. Another one I hate is when the joint-piece has it's own 'plate' to work as part of the elbow/knee, like Granado joints. Quite upsetting since I otherwise LOVE the Granado nuevo body's aesthetic!

Mismatching heads and bodies. A lot of times I'll love the head but it won't look good on the body or vice versa. In MSD sizes, but even in lots of SDs, the head will look too young for a mature body, especially when they give the females large breasts and long legs or the males unrealistically 'six-pack abs'. For example, I love Fairyland MiniFee bodies but the heads are too large and cartoony for me; I love Iplehouse JID heads, but they seem a pinch too big and definitely too young for their bodies. So frustrating!

Legs that are too long. It seems like 95% of BJD bodies have ridiculously long anime legs, many to the point of spindley creepiness and I usually hate it. On boys it looks even worse, somehow.

I don't like dolls with long slitty eyes (the ones that tend to look 'dark' or super-serious), which seems especially popular in males. They seem so unpleasant, to have 'someone' in the room in a perpetual bad mood for no reason.

There are tons more, but I think those are the biggies for me.

    9. Helium boobs. The ones that look like the sculptor has never seen a woman, but merely studied porn, hentai, and certain Renaissance paintings.

Also, those "double jointed knees" that basically just give you two knees on one leg, and make your doll look like an alien.

Girly effeminate male heads on muscular bodies.
There is such a thing as testosterone, and it does not avoid people's heads and faces when it develops the rest of them.

Erect missile style nipples. Unless the doll is supposed to be an Alaskan porn star, or a very cold nudist, there is no reason to give every doll nipples that poke holes in clothing.

Childlike faces on mature bodies. JID males, I'm looking at you. No 8 year old has that kind of body development, unless he's had horrible things done to his physiology.

Bad anatomy in general. Pecs do not end below the deltoid ends in general, nor do they sit horizontally. Collarbones can only attain a certain angle if the person is shrugging. Many sculptors put dolls together like they've never taken a single life drawing course but have only been studying bad animation. And yes, before you ask, I am working on learning to sculpt my own, with decently correct anatomy, and not to brag but to state the fact, I have several years of classical life drawing and art training so I'm not just pointing rude fingers here.

    10. Uuugh I second this >.<
And the JID girls too! Their new girl has a baby face and is dressed/styled like a little girl but underneath the clothes she's super curvy. Dafuq.

    11. Number one turn-off: ugly joints.

I want my dolls to have aesthetically pleasant (or at least tolerable) joints since I won't have them in long-sleeved, calf-length clothes all the time. I've seen so many adorable sculpts that I've discarded from my "potentials" list because their default body has ugly joints (I don't want to hybridize for my doll family).

    12. I dunno about the impossiblilty of childish heads on adult bodies, I've been watching the Olympics and I am definately seeing some yet-to-really-hit-adulthood faces on very mature athletic bodies. But that is a physical specialization started through training at a young age.

      My doll turn offs
-resin that feels more like plastic (thinking of my old Demon Garden body)
-poorly proportioned bodies, especially when the arms are too short from shoulder to elbow
-fingers with no structure, noodly appearance
-neck holes set too far forward so the doll has no chin space underneath, odd side view
      -permanently shrugged shoulders
      -overly long upper lip/filtrum
-any doll body with parts that seems randomly tensed when the rest of the body is sculpted in a relaxed pose
      -heads that are proportion-wise so small on their body they can't fit in with my group no matter how much I like them ;__;

      • x 3
    13. Hands are my biggest thing. Hands that are too small for the body (like 5SD), so undefined as to look like a crude drawing of a hand, with fingers too chunky or short or all in one piece instead of separated...

Mostly, I want hands to look like hands at rest. I need the pose of the hands to seem natural, and the details to be well-sculpted. The only exception to this is my Brownie, who is so tiny that it really just doesn't matter. XD

    14. gotta agree with what most is being said.
      Mine
-yep too childish faces on mature bodies
-weird looking breasts, like people were mentioning cylinders just plopped on the chest or squished together. I don't mind big, small or flat chested just that they look realistic and not like a barbie doll
-hmm normally I would say over thin stick bodies, but after getting my Doll Chateau Colin I think he is very cute, accept his uh breasts..lol
      -small childish hands on MSDs
-expressions, I also like kinda neutral expressions, a slight sly smile is ok, but I'm not too keen on the pouty, sad faces, because well they make me sad
-arm and leg proportions to the torso, Love my resinsoul dolls but I think the MSD boy arms could be just a tad longer because natural finger tip length would be mid thigh.
-curled hands or pointing fingers, if its optional hands you can purchase for a different look no problem, but I like natural shaped hands for default

I'm sure there is many more but I'm running out of time..lol

    15. - Childish heads/faces on mature bodies: To me, it's really creepy. You shouldn't have a 10 year old's head on a 27 year old's body with boobies to match. It's weird and a major turn off. I sort of expect the head to match the body, you know? (Just my opinion!) Same goes for males. If you have a childlike face, I will be shocked when you're rockin' a twelve pack.

      - Wide-set eyes: There's a certain point at which they start to look like... I dunno, fish?

      - Big head on a leeeeeetle body

      - The Gonk Face. I really dislike the gonk face. It trumps teeth/tongue for me. My very first doll has teeth but they aren't painted so it's not super weird to me. Plus she's smiling! But the gonk face. Ugh. It's like your doll is going D: constantly and I feel... kinda bad for them! Like they're in pain or something? I couldn't buy a doll that goes D:

    17. These made me laugh so hard. Really. thank you for making the highlight of my day.

Anyway, my turn offs would have to be bobble heads (some heads are just a little too big for the body and it's just not proportionate enough for me).

Overly girly male sculpts (yes, some boys look like they'll never hit puberty but looking at some of the sculpts nowadays, I can't even tell if it's a boy or girl much less strangers).

And lastly, overly thin bodies. Has anyone ever seen that one body that isn't "slim msd" but seriously lacks proportions and is skinnier than a barbie. I don't know what company it is, but I saw one.

I have a new post with updated pet peeves since I have since matured in the hobby.

    19. Haha yes yes yes. I asked in the visual concepts thread for MSD males that didn't look pre-pubescent, and people kept suggesting JID males. After a while I was just like no, no just stop.

Oh god yes I've noticed that about my boy and it annoys me so much.

Anyway, for me white skinned dolls are a turn off. Even if I was going to make a vampire doll or something, I'd still want a bit of colour. Most 'normal' skinned dolls are still too pale for my tastes anyway.

MSDs that look too much like children. I like some mature features.

Anime styled dolls, which is the main reason I don't like the vast majority of tinies, they all seem to have the same 'cute' anime aesthetic, like those little fairyland things that are so popular. I can see why they're popular, but they're just not my thing.

Certain boobs bother me, like on the planetdoll body and doll chateau msd body. At the same time though, they're so weird that I like the bodies. I dislike them but like them at the same time. ._. I don't even understand that.

Noses that have nostrils that just look like the sculpter got a pin head and pushed it in.

Features that are way too pointed and unnatural, I sanded down a dolls nose, upper lip and chin because it was just so damn pointed. I think it's when companies follow an anime aesthetic.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to dolls I like, I always seem to have to do some modding or something or I'm never 100% happy.

    20. I totally agree with a dislike of the porn star/implant bewbs. That's my main turnoff about Loongsoul's girl bodies- they're gorgeous otherwise, but I'd be afraid of poking myself in the eye on those ta-tas! >.<
