Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. Teeth are an instant deal breaker.
Everything else might make me go "eh...I like this one less than I did before I noticed it." since almost everything else can be modded if I really want the doll minus that part, but the thought of doing dental work on a doll just doesn't feel worth the effort for me. I wouldn't really know the first step to even take to do so.

    2. Plastic surgery face for girls: too symmetrical, too small a nose, big eyes, etc. the worst is tiny button lips--eww. I also hate teeth that are too...contrived, maybe (?) They only show the first two with a mouth that could show more.
My favorite girl faces have a more masculine characteristic, a big nose, wide mouth, etc. and have very tiny eyes. I'm a sucker for an open mouth with teeth--but they must be removable (makes painting easier) and fangs must peek out from inside the mouth rather than look slapped on the lips.
I hate undefined female arms on bodies (just a cylinder without muscle). I also hate thighs without fat on the inner leg (overexaggerated thigh gap). I also hate the too-small girl feet, and, to a lesser extent, hands.
I hate the muscles around male doll ribs and muscular calves that are too short.
I also hate the "baby face" on grown dolls which lacks bone structure (cheekbones, etc.).
I hate non-double jointed arms and legs, the double jointed knees that reveal an inner knee piece when bent. I also hate non-underbust chest joints and bodies that look "flat" when viewed from the side.

    3. I agree. the teeth! they are usually my turn off. Sometimes I love the sculpt but when I look at the teeth it turns me off. even though they're perfect i just get turned off by the teeth or open mouth. I do love sculpts that have scary open mouth but only for fantasy types. For normal ones.... I dont usually look at ones with teeth.

    4. I think if they are smiling, it would be okay for me, but it there was just teeth... No haha.
      I prefer no teeth with emotion/expression :D

    5. There are only really a couple of things that can be make or break for me...
      - Like a lot of other people have said... TEETH, I don't like it when you can see teeth peeping out unless it's a vampire/cat sculpt. Come to think of it, in general I don't like it when the mouth is open, even if it's only a little open because sometimes this makes me think that the doll looks like it has a vacant expression (the phrase "catching flies" comes to mind at times xD).
      - Non-interchangable faces that have a particular expression, it's fine if you can swap them (like the FL sleeping faces or Unoa faceplates) but the second it's a grinning or smiling face or that one crying face (DIM Miso and Ringdoll Mona for instance) I'm like nope, not for me, I like when my dolls can easily be versatile so I go for more Neutral expressions or swapable ones, I'm sure more talented individuals can do awesome things with the more expressive sculpts but it's just too much for me.

Other than that everything is basically on a doll to doll basis.

    6. My iplehouse Pamela has a slightly parted mouth and you can see juuuuuuust a bit of her teeth. It depends on the angle, really. I thought it was pretty clever how the designer sculpted her face so depending on the angle you don't see teeth. But anyways, I like the way she looks. The teeth are complimentary and not distracting.

I Totally agree about the creepy crying face doll...it's like straight outta hades. I really dislike those winking faces. The one where the open eyeball is as big as a planet and then a squeezed flap of flesh for the other... :(

    7. A bad default faceup can make or break a sculpt for me. I'm not very good in imagining what a doll could look like, so I rely heavily on company faceups in the photos to see if I like a sculpt.

Also dolls with disproportionately gigantic eyes are an instant turn off. And I'm not talking anime-esque eyes or just big eyes, those I really like, but the 'realistic' sculpts with eyes that take up half of the face. I've seen a few here and there and wonder if anyone has ever bought them.

    8. Big breasts and really muscular bodies. I mean I don't like muscular bodies in actual people so I like them less on my dolls =A=

    9. Seriously over exaggerated expressions kind of freak me out, along with things like really toothy grins. I'm okay with a little bit of teeth showing, but like, slasher smiles get me. There's a couple smaller impldolls that seriously freak me out because they are just sporting some unneccessarily toothy grins.

Maybe the aversion to teeth is because people in real life really don't smile giant toothy grins that often? IDK.

    10. Droopy eyes! I don't know how else to explain it, the ones that look like the outside corners of their eyes droop way too far like a sad old hound dog. That drives me crazy.

The crying dolls. Not because they're ugly. In most cases the sculpts are actually quite beautiful but that's the problem. They're so beautiful and realistic I just get sad looking at them. Like they're heart breaking to look at. I just can't handle that.

Tongues. I can't remember who made it but there's that vampire doll with his tongue out. I think it was meant to be sexy, but it just isn't. He reminds me of a creepy mouth breather who follows around women and licks his lips at them.

    11. I would have to say the nose and mouth have to look just right if not it turns me away from the doll.

    12. I'm pretty particular when it comes to what dolls I'll purchase. On the one hand that makes it very easy to keep my collection to a minimum, but on the other hand, it sometimes makes it extremely difficult to find what I'm looking for. Here are just a few things that instantly puts a doll on the 'No' list for me.

*Large eyes or closed eyes. All of my dolls have a half lidded sort of dropped eye and I like it that way
      *Super thin noses
      *Thin lips
*Extreme facial emotions. I like my dolls with a more neutral, almost pouty expression
*Extremely thin bodies. This includes thicker bodies with visible ribs sculpted on them
*Large breasts for females. It doesn't matter if their sculpted realistically or not, I don't prefer a larger bust
*Extreme muscle definition for males. Some attention to muscle is fine. But not when it turns into hard lines and a photoshop effect
*Lack of detail in bodies. Some are simply way too smooth and begin to look like mannequins
*"Long" or oval face shapes. I prefer a more square or rounded head shape
*Too long. Most dolls over 60cm to me wind up looking disproportionate to me
*Heads that are too large/small for their bodies
      *Horror-themed dolls
*Plain/unrealistic hands-This is not actually an automatic no if the rest of the body is nice. If the hands can be changed out with another company, I'm much more lenient

    13. Teeth, big breasts, child-like heads on mature bodies, sad-looking faces, single torso bodies and male bodies that are too muscular. I wish there are 62-65cm bodies that are slim. Not all guys are/want to be muscular.

    14. Unrealistic shaped noses.Small noses with small lips and small chins but with huge eyes.Oddly shaped ears.Lips that are too tight.The eyebrows also have to look a certain way including the eyelashes.I wont list everything as I'm very picky when it comes to BJDs -v-;

I think I just generally don't like dolls with very unrealistic proportions and features, however if a doll is somewhat realistic I may love or like it!

    15. Kamotekid - I'm totally with you on the kid heads on mature bodies...creepers!!!

    16. I don't really like dolls that show teeth. I know a lot of people like that,but I don't.

    17. I don't like that most msd and smaller boy sculpts are just so round and shapeless and childish. I also don't really like yellow. Bright yellow is fine but the darker yellows don't sit well with me. I also don't like it when eyes don't even fit right in the dolls head so you see a gap. I don't like faceups that make the doll seem like they are part of a circus. It just creeps me out a little. And expressionless dolls. I guess that's my list for now.

    18. I enjoy a variety of doll body types and facial aesthetics, however I do have things that will break my affection for any doll: ugly hands, and ugly necks. (Usually meaning simply that the hands or necks are not well rendered, are lacking realism in a way that is not pleasing to see, or the stylization of these features is not effective in my opinion.)
Basically, if the two things left exposed when a doll is fully clothed are still unsighly I'm always going to feel unhappy with them.
Obviously it's better if the doll looks just as beautiful clothed and nude, but worst case scenario they should at least look lovely clothed.

    19. "Resting bitch face" on tiny dolls (I'm looking at you Soom Glot!) That frowny face that just looks like they're so upset with you. No matter how many cute clothes you buy them! I've seen some with beautiful face ups, but the "bitch" is still there.

And super thin thin bodies (a la Doll Chateau) I'm always afraid I'm going to breathe on them wrong and they'll snap.

    20. I have never really liked tan, blue, green or white skinned dolls. I really like natural skin although I do have a Luts Artbody Lois and she as a hint of lilac to her resin and she is lovely. I bought her second hand and if given the chance for a natural resin Lois I would swap her in a heart beat. I like the Artbody bjd's I know that many people don't like the big butts and thighs but they are so cute that I want a Dust of Doll and a Elaine Lillycat. They're wonderful for fantasy characters.
