That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. Smiles. I know, weird. I like dolls to have a plain expression, or a little grumpy. When ever I look over at Oliver, it just looks like he is saying, "Really? and I love it.

    2. I've noticed that some dolls' faces have beautiful features and all,but when I look at their profile I tend to change my mind because of the long or pointed nose, just can't stand it :| But I guess it just a matter of taste ,like so many people here have mentioned not liking white skin,as for me it's one of my favourite skin tones,it makes doll look even more fragile, gentle and out of this world :aheartbea

    3. Pouty faces... argh (I do realize this is a problem in BJD land ;)). Oh, and stick thin dolls with legs up to their armpits :)

    4. I have a bunch of pet peeves when it comes to dolls but the most relevant ones are probably:

      - Huge breasts. Like, if that doll were real, she'd be suffering severe backpain.
      - Really gaunt faces. The ones where it looks like the cheeks are being sucked in all the time or the doll is on the verge of starving.
      - Flat butts. I know it makes clothes easier to fit if there's no junk in the trunk but I'd love to have a doll with a big booty just because that's my body type.

    5. Dolls with poorly designed joints. It's not as common as it used to be but sometimes you just can't win with a body no matter how good the elastic and how carefully the sueding(?) is done.

Dolls coming strung way too tight from the factory. I was really scared to restring until two months ago and having dolls that would happily slap themselves in the face was mildly irritating until my MNF Chloe arrived. She was a nightmare to even pull her feet away enough to unhook them from the elastic -n-;; I was so scared with all the resin flakes that came out from between the neck and the head connector but now she's a dream aside from a slightly floppy head that could be easily fixed.

Muscles out the wazoo. Personal taste more than anything but I look at some dolls and I just, ugh. They look wrong somehow?

Lovingly detailed junk. Again, personal. More to do with my own issues. Won't go into it further.

Anime nipples. Weird nipples with the little dip in the middle and the areola is just straight up a perfect raised circle. Ewwww.

That being said though, I have nothing against people who own dolls with these things at all. It's all about personal taste here c:

    6. Im not too picky, and these arent like huge pet peeves but red lips on dolls and bad jointing. i REALLY dont like to see bad jointing because it just makes me feel bad for the doll... its like their arm is detatching. Red lips because it just doesnt look good in my opinion. i love the idea and i LOVE when i see it on people but ive yet to see a doll with an atractive red lip.

    7. Hard to think of which peeve is my biggest, it changes all the time.
I guess the thing that currently bothers me the most is sour faces on child dolls. I kinda hate to say this because it's just personal taste, and one person's Awful is another's Adorable. But I really can't stand Secretdoll Person. I just want to slap her snooty little face!

    8. I really dislike a white skintone without blushing.. it makes the doll look so flat, lifeless and (i don't ant to offend anyone) cheap.
And also the giant pouty lips.

    9. One big thing for me is very babyish yosds. Like...I may still find the doll cute, but I would just never want it. I don't know, somehow I started associating that size with a 9-11 age range because my two yosds are that, so if the body is too babyish I find it a turn-off ^^; Age ranges for dolls are kind of weird, aren't they? It varies but yosds are usually meant to be very little, and then in standard sizing you go right up to msds who usually look like young adults.

Umm... a 3-part torso. I don't mind if the chest and lower body are separate, but if the hips are as well, I just find it kind of ugly. It can give better posing, but the doll just never looks as pretty naked- there's always this weird 'granny panties' effect going on. And nothing against granny panties, I wear them myself because if being ace doesn't mean I can wear comfortable brookies instead of sexy ones then what good is it? But it doesn't make for a good doll aesthetic xD

Very sharply sculpted facial features. My first doll has this and I can just never fully wash her face clean after a faceup! The grooves of her eyelids especially are just a nightmare. Fortunately she was cheap and a gift so I don't mind just having her as a practice doll now, but still, the sculpting is weird.

Very thin resin. I'm not sure if it's a difference in Korean/Chinese dolls or not, since I only have a few different comparisons, but my Momocolor and Luts are just so lightweight, it drives me mad. My doll's body should not be lighter than its head, how does that work?! I love my Asleep Eidolon, who's so heavy that she can just sit on her big bum for months and be perfectly comfortable. It really does wonders for balance! Also, I paid more for those dolls with less resin in their bodies!

Realistic dolls. As a contrast to a lot of bjd fans I see, I prefer anime styled dolls. I grew up with 90s shoujo like Sailor Moon and Cardcaptor Sakura, so that's the type of ascetic I like in bjds.

    11. Oh! When companies get all puritanical and don't want to show pictures of their dolls naked. How can you tell if you'll like it if you can't see the body clearly?

It's probably kind of natural that face sculpts sometimes end up being very similar? When you have a specific style, especially, like Luts, it just... Well, there are only so many eye/nose/lip shape combinations!

    12. When the eyes are too big for the doll. The irises are soooo huge that no whites are showing. The doll looks high on drugs because the pupils look so dilated!

Incidentally, my FL Minifee Chloe came with default 16mm eyes. Way too big, in my opinion. Practically no whites where showing.

Right now, she has 12mm eyes, and she looks much better!

    13. It's usually something about the face that kills it for me, a lot of sculpts have eyes that are way too big matched with tiny noses and small pouty mouths. I prefer female dolls but I find it really hard to fall in love with femme sculpts from big companies, luckily there's a wealth of indie sculptors that make incredibly beautiful and unique ladies ^^
I definitely agree on the boobs thing, I don't mind large busts, but a lot of sculptors don't seem to understand that 'big' doesn't mean 'balloons glued too high on ribcage'

    14. I don't like large breasted bodies, chubby baby dolls(sure, babies are cute but if I wanted a baby doll I'm sure I could go to a toy store and find a great one there) and heads that look really weird at some angles (I have an angel of dream Xun and there's this certain angle that just looks so weird to me)

    15. Glamour busts, ugh

    16. I'm not a fan of very realistic sculpts, I love to see them and I think they're amazing but I wouldn't want them for myself.

I dislike the pear-shaped bodies, duck lips(minifees), big breasts (prefer them in-between ) on girls. As for boys, I have a type of face that I like so I'll choose those feature examples as the my next possible purchase, I can't really say what I don't like on boys....but one thing I'm sure of is that I don't like any body except for Volks SD17, SDGr and for a more younger body I like the Delf or Dollmore body. I highly dislike the rest of the bodies on the market(DOD, Soom, Luts, Iplehouse etc).

    17. I agree. My first bjd has white skin, and I regret it. She looks like a corpse to me.

Ears that are too low. I like realistic sculpts, and many dolls have the ears set way too low. I can accept it on dolls with elf ears, but not with human ears.

    18. i love bjds and i find a lot of sculpts very attractive but my one turn off would have to be bjds with long necks. sorry if i'm offending someone with a long neck bjd but, that is just my personal opinion.

    19. "fish eyes".

When their eyes are really far part. Doll Chateau does it some, and I love DC most of the time, but the fish eyes get to me.

    20. Eyes that are too big/too wide on otherwise a "mature", proportional face. It looks like someone's eyes after wearing superthick farsighted lenses... comical.

And I've mentioned elsewhere, eternally erect nipples bother me a ton, along with weirdly placed nipples, and don't get me started on unrealistic breast shapes! *_*
