That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. Unrealistically proportioned female bodies in general are so annoying to me. I also prefer standard MSDs to slim because they just look less like they are trying to be "sexy". Some dolls are just so so idealized and over-sexualized (I'm thinking of that DD Dynamite body I think) and it just makes me uncomfortable, kinda the same way super-sexualized female video game characters do, because it just feels like they promote the idea that females are there to be attractive to dudes... I'm not gonna get off on a tirade here :x sorry lol
On the bod topic, ANGEL FANTASY BODIES. They honestly terrify me. The 1/4 body has ridiculously squashed and elevated boobs, and the 1/3 has this slenderman-ish long torso and overly long arms, and I just, no PLEASE.
Also overly-muscular male bodies + male bodies with giant shoulders and tiny hips to accentuate the "triangle" shape. Most dudes don't have a six-pack or triangle shape as defined as that, it's as unrealistic/idealistic as the overly-accentuated hourglass figures on females.
I don't know, I have a lot of pet peeves, dang... I love a lot of independent artist dolls because they often have unique body types without the signature hourglass or buff effects. I know I have my dolls dressed most of the time, but I really appreciate body aesthetics anyway. One of the big deal-breakers for me in the second-hand market is when people hybrid a head I like onto a body I hate. I know it's petty of me, lol, and no one is making me buy it. I'm not going to harrass the seller about it or anything but it makes me sad to find a head I really want and not be able to buy it on its own because someone wants to get rid of the body... :XD:
Yikes lol I wrote more than I shoulda.

    2. I don't particularly care for childish faces with mature bodies- this applies to both male and female dolls. I think a very mature faced doll with an immature body would be equally jarring but I never seem to see that?
dolls who have bosoms that look like flotation devices
dolls with poorly sculpted hands and feet that look more like paddles than appendages.

    3. I personally don't like really muscular dolls such as Iplehouse. Especially if they're MSD size, being so large and thick it's weird to me. But thats just me lol

    4. I wish I had the one thing. I have lots of things. Bad faceups/lighting or overall bad promotional photos (which includes heavily photoshopped ie Souldoll) are an immediate turn off for me.

What turn off goes along with that is... I know every doll is art, but I really don't like the dolls that look like they were just thrown together. Like big eyes, basic bodies, no artistic expression to jump out at me. Example Angel of Dream, Only Doll, DF A, Dragon Doll etc.

Hands are always a make or break for me too. Same with sharp elbow or knee joints with that stupid, ugly, awful oval peanut inside.
If I can look past it I might say single joints, especially on the knees, or that freaking waist joint ugh. Arrrgg.

Also fantasy dolls that don't move correctly. One major reasons why I could never buy the Soom or Souldoll centaurs - the back half of them is ridiculous. I think Luts is honestly the only company who has done them right though, but now I'm just being haughty about my fantasy creatures :P

      I don't know, I have a lot. Maybe I'm just picky .-.

    5. My biggest turnoff ...

Dolls that can't sit up by themselves. Like the Fairyland F65 girls. Seriously gorgeous body, but poor design. The hip sockets aren't deep enough and the arch in the back is too deep. Coupled with the enormous boobs, its enough to topple the poor girl right over backwards. lol I ended up selling mine because I just couldn't tolerate her not sitting up. She posed amazingly well in every other way, though. The F65 boys don't have that issue.

I also don't like bodies that are blocky-looking. I prefer a body to look curvy and graceful, more natural. The Bobobie immature MSD body is an example. The head sculpts are pretty, but the body was always a big turnoff.

I also don't like hands and feet that look clownish. I ADORE Kaye Wiggs sculpts, but I have to admit I'm not so fond of the bodies, especially the hands and feet. The design of them just looks cartoonish in comparison with the beautiful faces. The new body designs are better-looking, but the hands and feet still don't look that good. It's a good thing the faces are so beautiful, enough that I'm willing to overlook clown hands. And the feet are awkward in that they don't fit well in many shoes, due to the way the toes are spread. I would love for the hands and feet to be redesigned to look more natural on those bodies.

    6. They have a locking mechanism if you push the thighs back a bit when she's sitting so they go 'click'. My F65 sits just fine, so maybe it needs that or sueding or something?

โ€ข Doll Chateau bodies freak me out =/
โ€ข Teeth that show, and bucktooth vampires. They just look silly.
โ€ข Single joint BJDs. I want to be able to pose adequately.
โ€ข Dolls without magnet hands/feet. I do a lot of sewing and it's a mess to measure and try on with feet and hands in the way.
โ€ข Huge, fake boobs. I ordered the smallest size and they're still really big/weird.
โ€ข Picky, but male 'young'-looking dolls with over-defined muscles. It's fine on more masculine dolls.
โ€ข Weird proportions, like many say. It might be more natural, but it messes up clothing something fierce.

    7. That's exactly what I was thinking- and I agree completely. Unfortunately it seems like every doll I've ordered has just that issue however- at least breasts are easily replaceable. :) As soon as I can afford new ones I'll probably be buying some. Part of me thinks, okay- some women do have very large boobs and it's just how they are, it's not their fault! While another part thinks, "my poor doll :pout:)

    8. Open mouths that make the head look like it is gasping, closed eyes heads, bad nose mouth and eye proportions. Male legs that look like logs and nothing else, no curves whatsoever just logs. Bad wigs or an over all messy look.

    9. Oh as a woman with a very large chest, if I could swap out for a smaller chest part I would! (I know a lot of women wouldn't but I would!)

    10. Mouths tend to be my biggest turn off - exposed teeth especially. Or overly pouty lower lips. Just don't like the general expression on most of the dolls with those traits.

    11. I've been searching for the perfect body for a certain head, and I've seen so many bodies with really flat forearms. I don't understand it.

I also passed up a body with a lovely torso because I hated the elbows. They were just way too square and there seemed to be a pokey bit coming out when the arm was bent. As much as I appreciate the increased pose-ability, I kind of miss the aesthetic of single joints. The body I went with has much larger pecs than I wanted, but I haven't received it yet, so I'm not sure how much of a problem they'll be.

If I were buying a full doll there are a lot of body issues I could probably just ignore, but looking at all the bodies individually there's so much to nitpick.

    12. Aw, I'm kind of surprised so many people really don't like dolls with open mouths/teeth, or weird expressions...more for me, though! :D

The thing that'll stop me from buying a doll is any sort of really angular, rough-looking chest/waist joint. I don't even mind where the joint is if it follows the shape and aesthetics of the body. But if the chest joint is just a straight line, *turn*, then a another straight line, *turn*, then another one, it's horrible! It looks like the top of a trapezoid! :'D I also won't buy a body with hands that seem super small on their wrist, even if it's more correct proportionally. I've seen a lot of people say some boy bodies have "yaoi hands", but I actually like how those look the best!

This one isn't a dealbreaker, but I also don't like most of the double-jointed arms/legs that have a random piece stuck on the double joint for an elbow/knee - I prefer double joints that are just "beans", like on Mystic Kids bodies, that are completely hidden when the leg is straight! (Especially if the "beans" are shaped to look more natural when they're bent, instead of just featureless beans - the front of AprilStory's boy knees are the first example that come to mind here.) It's so common on bodies I love otherwise that I've had to just accept it, though, as long as it doesn't look too awkward...

    13. Besides the awkwardly huge boobs, I hate when the ball joint on the ankle is extremely obvious. I like when companies hid the ankle ball between the food and leg pieces, if that makes sense. I also hate only kids doll body with the circles on the knees and elbows. It looks so bad compared to all of their beautifully sculpted heads.

    14. It's hard to find a 70 cm boy who isn't ripped. Like, I mean super hero-weight lifter buff. It makes me think of captain hammer. "I don't go to the gym, I'm just naturally like this.." My next boy has to be 70 cm and he's going on either doll chateau, Dollzone, or resinsoul's body. That's all I've found

Female bodies that only come in huge, huger and hugest. I joke that these next two dolls are my 'unconventional couple' because he's a slim 70 cm man and she's a small bust sd. It took so much to find a decent girl body that didn't look way out of proportion. All I ask is one small bust option. I would pay extra, just saying.

and childlike faces on muscular bodies... Or bodies with uberboob... No. Just no. I'm not much on childish sculpts to begin with, but that just...no.

    15. I hate it when I find a sculpt that I ADORE... except for one thing that throws me off. For me it's usually lack of joints (usually hip and torso), too big breasts, too detailed gentalia, and for heads it can be as small as the way the eyes look or the jawline :kitty1

    16. Dolls that look markedly unhappy or angry, like with a down-turned mouth. Funny thing is that in most owner pictures I see of such dolls, without the faceup or with a natural faceup the sculpts look confused rather than angry.

    17. I hate dolls with angular or thin noses. It just feels so... ick to me. Idk if it's just me, but I think it's because there are so many dolls with European features and a small handful with features of other ethnicities such as thick noses and big lips. It just makes me angry to see a doll with a thin nose and big lips because that often doesn't happen in nature and looks plastic surgery-esque to me.

    18. -I don't like bodies with "pants" jointed hips. Really, is a no no for me.
-I agree for the huge boobs and over muscular bodies to be a real turn off.
-I dislike even a lot of Fairyland sculpts, they seems to have had plastic surgery and I don't like that.
-Too long arms or neck like some doll chateau bodies have.
-I'm really picky about the nose. Sometimes I like the mold, but I dislike the profile for the nose.
-For now, I'm not attracted by sleepy heads.
-Some bodies have really strange joints that are too angular, aesthetically ugly and unnatural.

    19. I know what you mean, I always thought this too!

Those thin, pointy and sharp-as-blade looking noses were putting me off from BJDs for years actually, because I was not looking for the dolls I could love enough and since so many dolls seem to have this kind of nose, I thought all of the BJDs were like that  In addition to features from various ethnicities, I would love to see more aquiline noses, on both male and female dolls.

    20. Realistic dolls! Dolls with big eyes like Kiddelf Ani, Dollzone Shoyo or Volks F01 got me into this hobby and I still like this kind of dolls the most. It seems that I am outnumbered today, but I don't like the trend towards more and more realistic dolls like Iplehouse for example.
